I own a manual OG N55 M2 and in my opinion, if you care more about the sound and feel of a car more than straight line performance, I'd consider it over spending more for an M2 Competition. My car is stock and doesn't even have the M Performance Exhaust and I get asked if I have a modified exhaust all of the time. The M2 Comp is faster and more refined but sounds way worse, and 370HP RWD is enough for me.
Thanks for another great list JB! I'm that guy that's been commenting good things on your videos for more than 6 years now. The one that you inspired a couple years ago to get a VW, so I bought my mk7 GTI and instantly fell in love with it. Now, I feel like it's time to let someone else fall in love with it and I've been thinking what to get instead. I must admit, I've been hating on BMWs and their drivers for years, but recently you've mentioned a BMW in another video that didn't make this list for some reason. That model is very forgettable somehow, which actually suits me as they depreciated HARD, but they are really stunning and sound hella nice. So I just wanted to let you know I appreciate your work and to thank you for changing my perspective, you're doing god's work here! Peace, DC

I bought an F82 M4..low mileage..ppl love seeing these cars on the road..they stand out.
Just bought an M4C a few days ago. Love it!
I’d considered every other car on this list, but for me the M4C ticked more boxes. M2 too small, M5/6 too big and the i8 just lacked a proper engine.
My favourite still to this day is the e46 m3 I love the e46 platform

Picked up a low mileage M2 Comp recently as people had said it was the sweet spot of M2-M3-M4 if you didn't need the space and I think it is an awesome car so far. Gives everything you want from it and is so tight and flat! Amazing machine!
My favourite bmw is a 635 CSI.

2006 530xi is my favorite.
I've just test driven a GR yaris..... they're asking £36 k for it. I've never driven any of the cars on your list, would I be daft to buy the yaris without trying any of these?
I had an e36 m3 once and felt it a bit un- engaging? Any advice?

I’m actually after a GR Yaris at some point! From this list I would 100% test the M4, I was really surprised with how much I liked it
I know the GR will only be a year old or so but not much more buys an M4 CS although it's going to be a 2018 model. I think for most these were too expensive when new at £90k or £95 with the carbon brakes but now for early £40s I think represent good value. I've got an E92 M3 which I don't think for the money you can really beat but definitely considering a CS next.
The best looking is probably, for me, the M635csi
Favourite ever BMW might also be the 1M, it exemplifies what BMW do best and actually somewhat fits the "ultimate driving machine" thing. Not OTT in any way, it's just good in every way, although obviously the used prices now are mad.
The M4 Comp was a pleasant surprise for me and I didn't actually find it was too aggressive, perhaps driving it back to back with the Cayman, an A110, Supra and Giulia QV all in one day skewed my opinion there though! I'd still consider one, but the interior quality really does put me off...it's the bit I sit in, it's important and that era of BMW just isn't good at all. I think I'd be more tempted by a newer M440i for £35k, since I don't mind scaring kids with the horrific exterior, the interior is a huge step up, even if the BMW digital dash is a mess.
...I might be slightly fussy with interior stuff, but then if I'm sat in it for 5 hours at a time and it's costing a year of most people's salary, it should be good!
I hear what you’re saying re interior - I think the top end interior specs though a bit boring are quite hard wearing, and will probably look the least offensive in like 10 years time compared with current Mercedes and some Audis… but then will you still have the car in 10 years! But agree totally on the 1M, properly cool car, one for the future garage for sure
@@CarsWithJB I'm not actually sure a BMW interior (of that gen) does wear better than a Merc - I feel like it's more like Audi where it feels solid but the materials don't last, especially the leather which in BMWs always seems to turn into crumpled paper after 20k miles. The switchgear, especially the thumb controls on the wheel, plus the centre boss on that seem to look worn really quickly too.
Mercs actually seem to age well enough from what I've seen but they feel flimsy quality from day 1. Perhaps they last because people are scared to touch them though 🤣
I do agree that those BMWs might not age as badly from a design perspective, although it's just because they're so uninteresting. The materials still just worry me. Honestly stick a Merc-designed, Lexus built interior in an M4 (with a Porsche engine sound) and that's a near perfect fast daily driver!
You channel will be the last BMW video i search/watch. BMW is clearly the hyundai/kia of german products. Ill just wait for that older VW 911. Theres just no comparison.

When you think that Clarkson chose the i8 over a M3/4... I never bought it. I think he was pushed by the lobbies to choose an hybrid car over a full petrol car... But I don't believe that's what he would have chosen without financial pressures...👀🧐
As for favourite BMW.... Hmmm... Hard one... I own a z4 3.0i e85, which I think look awesome, so an M one would be sweet, but I'd say the classic 635 CSI (shark front) or the M3 E46 csl... Hard one...
Having driven the M4 and i8, I would 100% have the M4 every day of the week, but I will say entirely unbiased that the i8 is genuinely a surprisingly good car - it’s nothing like the M4/M3 at all, and I don’t think it serves the same market - for anyone more sensible I’d recommend the i8, for anyone who prioritises fun, M4 no doubt!
I consider the m140i to be the best BMW it's just as fast as a m car u don't have to pay m taxes and it will give u 45-49 mpg and for the money u can't beat it

BMW M4 HAVE VERY DEFECTIVE ENGINES AND EVERY MECHANIC AGREES ME RIGHT
Most of the newer stuff is fragile at best now. Too much aluminium and external coolers for weak points. The chain issues were sorted but then came fueling problems injectors failing pumps at around 2k fitted was a no no.
If you mean the crankhub..then your opinion is that of a tuner trying to crank out over 700hp..the crankhub is a myth otherwise
Less than 30k lol I spend 10 15k tops. Not a fan of the newer stuff.
Yeah similarly like sub £15k personally but up to £35k is a pretty typical finance range hence a good one for lots of people’s budgets if they’re on the hunt!

It’s a good spot - I actually only realised during the edit, but thought I’d keep it in as the E and F are not typically too far apart on price from what I’ve seen, and I couldn’t find any more Es!

The alpina B5 is overpriced and overrated. There is no value in it at all. Should not be on this list. Think of the amount of faster, more luxurious BMWs you can get for it's money. It's not a special car at all
