Had my GX550 about a month . Pleasure to drive , I’m averaging low 13L on freeway in economy mode . Mid 15L around town . Sports mode add a couple Litres . The 10 speed box is smooth, quiet on freeway for a boxy car , visibility in car is remarkably good . Sharing the same size frame as 300 , the GX doesn’t feel nearly as big when driving . My wife was hesitant at start having a smaller car , although is quite comfortable in it now with cameras and parking displays . Off road I’m yet to do anything more challenging than this video and probably won’t in future. 2 teenage kids in back are happy with leg room and comfortable , reclining back seats . It’s not for everyone I understand, although we are loving ours . Yes , it’s thirsty and I’m yet to crack 500km on a tank with mixed driving, it’s a downside that our driving situation doesn’t throw the purchase into negative. For those that drive average 15-20k per year , the GX fuel bills would be approx 2k more per year than a similar size car (eg new Prado) that averages around 8-9L / 100km .
    Update .. 350km freeway trip. Cruise control 116km , no traffic. Average 10.9L /100km.
(As I’m up near 4000km , the car does seem a little better on fuel consumption)
Original 13L consumption I stated above was running between Syd and Coast , which includes standard freeway traffic and various hill climbs .

The trailer brake controller is an optional extra here in Australia. It's just a rebadged RedArc TowPro Elite V3 - you can buy the towpro yourself and just purchase the installation bracket and wiring harness as a kit. The kit won't be available until later in the year (2024) according to Chatswood Lexus Service.

I told them this is insane as the vast majority will want the petrol v6 for towing and will buy the Prado if they want a bloody hybrid. It will be interesting to see how well it sells in Australia. Modern 4wd vehicles are really very capable. What is clear is that drivers do not understand what settings to select for given road conditions. When Car Experts do not automatically select the best setting for the conditions, it is clear that the manufacturers and sales staff are failing in the all important area of providing driver information and training. It would be good to see car reviews where the drivers are from the manufacturers and know how to get the best out of the machines, and that knowledge is passed on to new comers of four wheel driving.

Absolutely true. I have the New Ford everest, but had to spend some time figuring out what the various off roads option actually do. Frankly a lot of skill and understanding of what a 4x4 is, is taken away because of these new preset settings.

I live in Australia and have a Ranger Raptor with a similarly thirsty petrol engine... 80 litres is more than enough for every day use. ULP is everywhere and filling up takes a couple minutes.
Even at 15L/100km you're going to have a safe 400km of range leaving around 20 litres in the tank. I've done big road trips in V6 and V8 Commodores and found even they were livable with a 400-500km range. You just stop at every servo you see when you're on an iffy leg and splash a tank in it. If you don't have enough range, chuck a couple of jerry cans in the back of the ute (or on the roof of a wagon). No big deal.

For something starting at $128,000 it's pretty plasticy and crap inside, regarding the plastic side steps you mention these will be replaced by someone going off road, NOBODY buying this is going off road, let alone changing side steps, Toyota better pick their act up quickly, the Chinese variants are years ahead of this one inside. In white with all the cheap looking unpainted grey plastic it looks like an old entry level Landruiser.

If you’re a family with a boat/caravan, etc. I can see the sense in the Lexus with it’s 3500kg towing. If you’re just after a family vehicle, the gigantic price hike over a similarly sized Sante Fe or Sorrento is so hard to justify these days. The interior is not that great for a lexus. The dashboard looks bland for the price,
There also seems to be some bias. I could recall when you tested the new triton at this point 27:14 , you didnt use the correct mode. You tested the lexus here , it didnt get over , you then put it in mud mode and called it impressive , why was the same not done for the triton? It clearly has a mud mode, and then you bashed the system and said it wasnt an improvement.
Some vehicles the traction control is tuned differently like in this lexus. The on road driving mode is different than offroad driving for sending power to the wheels.
The lexus acceleration is impressive though for the size.
