Tyler, repurpose the side door for the bathroom or bedroom. Replace the side door with the opposite swing to simplify your work. Second, my wrap around the counter comment, you could leave the end of the under side counter open. To serve as an indoor wood crib. Third, your idea for the kitchen, is perfect, from an ease of all the plumbing you may do for kitchen and bathroom. All being in a centralized location.

Great channel! A suggestion from a 30 year contractor. If you don't open up the entirely building including all walls and the ceiling, then seal up any crack or gap you will continue to have mice in the building. They will just move to another area of the house while you work on another area. You will also need to place wire mesh (hardware cloth) or plywood under the floor to keep the mice out of the floor. Just my opinion. Looking forward to seeing how it all works out.

Tyler, I am now 76 years old, but you so remind me of when I went to Alaska in my early 20's and bought an old 5 acre homestead from the 50's with no access and turned it into a great place to raise a family. Keep up the good work you are on a great path

We are a Dutchbat-Belgian completely, moved to Italy in the mountains (the Sibillinis ), we broke down a ruin and are just now finishing the newbuild. Our goal is also to live as selfsufficient as possible (9 hectare) but we are by far not so remonte as you are. Respect for what you are doing. we lived almost 3 years in a canvas tent and caravan with our 3 dogs and it was tough, especially in winter when it’s cold and wet , dark from 5pm till 8 in the morning. The first 2,5 years we had no electricity, no running water…. You know what it means ;-)
Take it one day at a time and you’ll get where you wanna be. Being able to live so close to or in nature is so worth all the efforts.

Once you get the cabin fully renovated and the road fixed enough so you can get the van to the cabin, you might want to think about building a decent size chicken coop and run. You don’t need a lot of chickens for your own use, no more than 5 or 10 should suit your needs. This way you can save on money for eggs, plus the chickens will eat up all the bugs and other critters that might get into the cabin.
Later on you can even sell the eggs along with your apples once you get the trees healthy enough to produce steady crops….

You really need house wrap aka Tyvek on that place. I don’t think your exterior cladding is water/wind proof. It won’t look pretty but for a couple hundred dollars you will be warmer and reduce chances of mold.

I am glad you discovered the mice hide out. I saw where a person living in Alaska had a similar problem. He found out the holes they were getting in and he took steel wool and shoved it in the holes then took expandable foam and spayed it with the still wool so it nade an aweso m e blockage..it made a perfect plug and the steel wool kept the mice from trying to nibble a way in. Great cleanup, by the way! It's hard to believe how much it's changed since you bought it!

Back around 1900s in Michigan USA loggers used to make "corduroy roads" from lining the road beds with unprofitable trees instead of a rock base. Gravel was added on top by future generations. About 30 years ago when one road was torn up to widen it, they found petrified wood.

I'm absolutely green with envy about your creek that runs down the hillside. The clearing of the undergrowth down along the creek really opens up how lovely that area is. It's perfect! The creek is not too noisy with just the right amount of water to be a babbling brook. In the end, I think you'll have several benches/sitting areas to take advantage of different views. The spot on the creek that is 4 feet deep could make an excellent place to sit in the water on really hot days.

I'd wrap the counter from under the window, around Left side, with more counter from left to right at the end of wall. A "C" shape. Can do extension off right wall without counter to include solarium etc.

@@sometea4741 tyler as stated many times, he's a minimalist. A full c counter will cost him more $. Not to mention all the cabinets space under the counter. What's he going to fill it with? I believe in Tyler's case. Being a minimalist, and stating, wanting an "open floor plan". Most peoples suggestions, like mine, are about function over form.

Greetings from Florida. Tyler, the cabin is looking great. I know is work in progress but the transformation is so noticeable! Having that creek is a huge plus. Who knows, there's probably gold in that creek. Thank you for another awesome video.

I'm a counter person. Cooks can never get enough. However, islands are totally awesome too. Will be fun to see what you do. Caution in opening your bed space, BUT if you don't like it, you can just put a wall back up, smile. The pleasure is in all you can imagine.

Hello from the United Kingdom! This is a dream of mine and would love to be able to do it. I highly recommend using the rivers as a source of power. And definitely agree with another comment about getting a few chickens. And one more idea is keeping fish in a large tank so you can grow vegetables etc using the water and eat the fish, if they reproduce quick enough. Hope this helps

Outdoor Boys fellow just did a trail in on his Alaska property he has great ideas you would find helpful. You need to check your foundation. Slim potato head good help as well. He is doing up a cabin in your neck of the woods. Good luck.

If the drywall has mouse urine on it, it's actually dangerous to keep. Two women, a mother and daughter, died of the Hanta virus in Virginia. They were sweeping out an old shed that was infested with mice. They inhaled the infected dust and became sick with respiratory issues and died shortly after. I'm glad to see he was wearing a mask while removing the insulation.

The house looks so good now that you have cleared out the walls and the old insulation. I hope you get rid of all the mice, not nice. The Brooke looks so cool and your clearing of the small trees makes such a difference. You have been so busy this week. Well done you. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

The cabin this open gives finally the clarity you needed! I personally would make a U kitchen. So, the wall from the bathroom, then u der the window that wall and at last, as long as the bathroom wall is, use that length equally on the third wall.. That way you can wrap it around your island, it is ideal to walk in and out from. You really will like the counter space you create that way, counter space is not only handy with coo,ing but also with hobbies and so on 😃
And I was shocked by how many mice were in that wall!! So, those stains in the walls and on the floor weren't only mold but mice pee... yuck! 😵‍💫 lol!
    Happy to see that gone!
You first looked lost but... you are finding yourself and your way every new day... 💪👌😎
And I am a giant fan of trail camera's! Loved watching that footage!
Thank you for taking us along with the both of you!
    Be safe, take care!
