    Loving the videos and your dream. A piece of advice from someone who heated their house solely with a wood burning stove: be selective about what wood you harvest. You want dry, but solid wood. If it’s punky/soft on the inside, it doesn’t burn well. It mostly just smokes and you’re not getting much advantage in burning it. Also, it creates an inordinate amount of smoke which will dirty up your chimney and risk chimney fires in the future.

    The things you've gotten done are immensely important.The fact that your hauling stuff with no ATV,tractor ,that the road to your van is impassible and you are carrying your building supplies thru the woods is Herculean!! The fact that you and Dobby have stuck it out through the million mouse insulation and subsequent times rates the character you have and the determination you possess .Wishing you every success,warm and joy to you both!

      I feel you are a very special person to stick with all of the massy upgrades. I remember the upgrades my husband and I did on this old village house built in 1910 we own. We had mold, mice, rats, bugs, rotten wood, coal, and train dust for three years. Now 45 years later we are comfortable sitting in the living room watching TV. Someday you will be doing the same. You will have pride in your apple orchard, cidery, and water power farm. Keep the faith and when you look back your head will spin with pride.

    On another note, you may want to think about taking advantage of winter to bring in additional building supplies with the help of a sledge and a snowmobile. I have no idea what the trail terrain looks like for an adventure like that, but it’s way easier to haul on snow than rough ground.

    When i meet my late husband he lived off grid. We r talking about back in the 60's. We bought a school bus completely gutted it and lived in it. Being out in nature and living the minimalist life is the way to go. Grow your own food. And dont pay any large amount of money to big companies.

    Hey Tyler and Dobby! My wife and I really missed your post last week! Great to have you back! Nice to see all that new insulation and vapour barrier. Doesn’t it make you feel good. Like a few other folks said you’ll want to vent those soffits as air flow for the underside of the roof is important! I would put the attic access inside maybe where you have to do a little repair work anyway! Accomplish 2 things in one. Have a good week! T!

    • @TheBlackClaymore
      @TheBlackClaymore 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I would second your comments. Vent the soffits and put the access on the inside. As you finish the walls look towards insulating the ceiling and the floor.
      The attic access inside could have a fixed ladder in place built against the storage area wall so you don’t have to carry a ladder in from your van.

    The cabins looks good your doing a fine job with it. The overhang area on the outside of your cabin is called the Soffit, if you don't have vents installed then you don't want to seal it off completely this allows ventilation of your cabin to the outside. You also will not be able to make a access to the attic from the soffit end as you would only have about a few inches to crawl through. Your best for access to the attic space which really doesn't look like much of a attic, is from the inside per your pictures, I would just cut through the ceiling, but it appears the ceiling is attached to the roof joints so really you won't have a real attic per say. I saw you cutting a lot of pine for firewood I would recommend the hard woods as they burn longer and cleaner. Pines tend to create creosote which which builds up in your chimney pipes and can cause a chimney fire so you will need to clean your chimney out much more with burning pine. Good luck and look forward to your next video.

    • @mademoisellekaya1438
      @mademoisellekaya1438 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great advice! All true things to take into account and write down 👍
      Indeed, it isn't much of a attic, I myself would want to make an attic and isolate the roof.. and yes, make sure that you have airflow at the tip of the soffit, screen it off with something metal with a fine mesh.
      Tyler, maybe a good recommendation is to watch the ytber ' @the outsider ' . In one of his later videos, he shows his way to give an airway high up, you can do something like that at those 2 ends of your cabin?
      Just to give you an idea 🙂

    Have you considered making a mouse trap with a bucket with water and a soda can? Lots of easy to follow tutorials online. My grandfather fought them constantly on his farm. So he started making the buckets. Put a few inches of water. Put some grain that floats on top of the water. They will jump down and will drown. Or put water in the bucket. Put a piece of wire across the opening. Have it run through a soda can. Put a little smear of peanut butter on the can. Theyll jump to it. Can spins. Deposits mice in water. Or make one with a tipping stick. We have caught as many as 30 in one night out in the chicken house with these

    Tyler, you are making amazing progress, well done. It's such a beautiful property. We are heading into a hot summer here in Australia. I will enjoy watching your winter. Stay warm. All that wood you chopped, I was exhausted just watching.
