    It doesn't help the situation that luxury brands are lowering their quality and counterfeiters are increasing theirs. We're almost to a scenario where the counterfeits are higher quality than the real thing.

      Some TH-camrs buying fakes and genuine would deconstruct the bags and it's true some high end fakes are better quality than the new original productions. I repair bags and noticed the quality getting worse past 15 years but past few years it's so bad I'm telling everyone not to buy new but Preloved from ten years ago. I still have bags from the 80s still in very good condition.

    I’m not sure what exactly they (Chanel) are trying to achieve here. Once I buy the product I should be able to do whatever I want with it - including re-selling and authenticating in whatever way I please. It’s like they want you to buy the bag etc. but still retain all kind of rights to the bag. They not selling the products on lease - it’s a full ownership that they sell, so why do they get a say in what you do with the product after the initial sale 😱

    Question: Is Hermes suing akin to Chanel? It seems to be only Chanel. Why is that? For me, if that is the case, it's very telling. I didn't find anything along these lines on Google other than the NFT Hermes case mostly. What is Chanel scared of? They seem to be acting out due to a weakened position. If sales were booming and they were in demand they wouldn't care so much about resellers and authenticators. The fact they care is a huge red flag. I see tons of Chanel classic bags unsold even in the preloved market. Jessiestyle just did a shopping Vlog in Japan and there were lots of Chanel bags on display. There is no scarcity so they are trying to create it by eliminating the preloved market (allegedly - this whole comment is alleged).

      Your comment is the most likely. Especially since they rapidly increased their prices to “MEET” the market position Chanel “PERCEIVES” that they belong in but the quality of their products currently says Different. I agree with you that their bottom line changed and it must be drastic for them to try and knock off an entire industry. Instead of trying to up their quality and stop the price increases for a minute their trying to knock off an industry that basically owns their products when the quality was better 😂😂😂😂. • @StyleChatter
    @StyleChatter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I’m imagining that if Chanel wins in this case, all of their products in the preloved market would devalue incredibly. Wouldn’t that lead to their products in stores losing value as well? Wouldn’t many longtime Chanel customers be less inclined to buy brand new products if they know that the value of the item will decrease as soon as they buy it, and they will never be able to sell the item and get their money back on it if they change their mind or just need money? The idea of buying Chanel as an investment piece will be gone. I would liken it to when you buy a car, the second you drive it off the lot it loses value. Not sure if I’m making sense with this, haha.

    Also Chanel should offer the service themselves if they won’t allow others to. Fakes DO get into circulation in luxury stores, it’s not unheard of. Educating the masses on what to look out for is extremely important. Not allowing anything at all is disrespectful to buyers.

  • @OrangeIsTheNewBag
    @OrangeIsTheNewBag 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    The paid authentication business was never going to be sustainable because of exactly that. How can anyone but the creator of a product can ever have any authority over issuing “authentication” anything? Paying someone for their time and knowledge to help us observe whether signs found on bags are consistent with authentic items, that is entirely a different story. However. The implication on the latter is that there is no certainty. Only information analysis to hedge our bet for the genuine article. Is the secondary market ready for that conversation?

    • @amorgladiador8856
      @amorgladiador8856 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The problem is they don't seem to want original owners to resell their bags either. The person who bought it from Chanel can indeed authenticate the item. Otherwise, what good are receipts, serial numbers and papers for? This is a big issue. Declining quality and Chanel seems to want to hold on to a de facto ownership over all the products it makes. (This entire comment is alleged).

    • @OrangeIsTheNewBag
      @OrangeIsTheNewBag 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@amorgladiador8856 It is a matter of semantic I guess. But as an original owner I can only testify that the item is authentic. Receipts can be falsified. Or original receipt of a similar bag used for another bag. Serial numbers too, because without registrations the serial numbers have very little value. "Authentication" is a very specific term, and when attached to a commercial interest that is worth billions, you can see why gatekeeping will start to happen. I am not pretending to know what they are up to, and I am not arguing against what is being said here as we speculate what they might be up to. I am only sharing my own experience dealing with this paid authentication. That sorts of thing did not exist in the past and reselling was simpler. Today, reselling and buying preloved are not more secure in my personal opinion. But with paid authentication, and the created false sense of security and unrealistic expectations like one person already commented, it simply made the process more stressful So in the final analysis, paid authenticators are making things worse, not better, for everyone.

      @OrangeIsTheNewBag 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@amorgladiador8856 My reply to you seem to have disappeared, so here I go again: I think it is semantic. The right term to use perhaps is not "authenticate". It is understandable that Chanel is so contentious over what seems so simple for us since billions are at stake for them. I do not claim to know what they are up to, nor am I disagreeing with the commentaries here about what they might.

    I found a Chanel jacket (you know the classic style jacket) at a charity shop once and it had the tag removed. I knew it was Chanel but a few people said they removed the tag because it's probably fake. However, I didn't think it looked or felt fake so I bought it. It was only $30 anyway. I subsequently had it authenticated and the opinion was that it was authentic. Anyway the point is that I now think they removed the label with the brand name because they are a small, not for profit shop, they probably didn't want to spend the money having it authenticated and didn't want to risk selling something branded with all of this type of behaviour from Chanel. And it's true if the jacket were not authentic, they could be in trouble for selling it and representing it was authentic so they probably just didn't want that hassle. Anyway, love the jacket and still wear it!

    Youre right---This will set legal precedence but this is not about the NY resale shop or U.S. authenticators. This is about the superfakes on the market and it's also about the massive overseas market in places like Japan. This kind of ruling will GUT the secondary luxury market in Japan which a lot of U.S. women were using to get authentic luxury brands including Chanel for considerably cheaper. Japan's legal system is extremely sensitive to issues of trademark violation and its extremely illegal to sell fakes there. This ruling essentially makes any bag on the second hand market a "potential" fake with no means to authenticate it.

    There’s always 2 sides, maybe three to a story. I noticed many are coming at Chanel for this lawsuit. I know😢 everyone has a right to decide what they do with their own items they’ve purchased, but I believe the very high price of the original product is due to the hike of prices on the second hand market. It’s a double edged sword. I only own one Chanel bag and never sold anything so I don’t benefit one way or the other but I do believe the greed of reselling has a lot to do with the currents situation.

  • @mericmt
    @mericmt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Chanel is definitely playing with fire but I can see how this may have other ramifications such as:
    devalue the “exclusivity” of the brand because the second hand market will not place such a high premium for their bags in this example. For people who do not care if their bags are real or not (gen z?), i can see how this is a good thing.
    Aside from potentially flushing out the fakes on the market, due to the availability of these much cheaper second hand bags on the market, they may attract a clientele they do not necessarily want and hence my comment about devaluing the brand.
    Thank you soooooo much for bringing the business perspective conversations which is completely lacking on you tube ❤because as much as i would love to see just pretty things on the tubes, the business side of things shape the direction of the fashion industry as a whole. Most people who buy Chanel are not the Super rich, even those who have a number of genuine bags. The quality of the Chanel bags have apparently gone downhill fast, but the price is skyrocketing. True luxury bags have always been considered 'Heirloom' items. This will now leave owners of preowned purchased bags insecure. At this point a customer is now only buying from the boutique for the perceived 'prestige' of the bags brand. Not the quality. Not the service. The brand doesn't even seem to like it's customers. If this was a human relationship, it would be called toxic. Chanel clearly only want the Rich of the rich, and a share of whatever the middle class have left. This will now leave owners of preowned purchased bags insecure.
    I get FOMO and insecure myself, sometimes I feel like owning a bag by Chanel would be the best thing ever... but in reality, I'd much prefer a large bank account and a beautiful home my family would enjoy. I'd only ever buy pre-owned from these "Top" luxury brands...but now, why bother. I'm jaded. And I've better things to worry about.
    What's sad is that now, whether you own a fake or a real one... there is always questions and insecurities. It's just not worth it. Just buy any bag you love, and live your life.

    😲I haz a Keepall 55 from What Goes Around Comes Around in Dillard's Montgomery, AL. East Chase location 30 yrs old looks brand new other than the beauuutiful patina just flawless & def. auth. I got for an amazing deal 1k dropped from 1,500 bc bad placement of the bag on the display it was too high up on the display for anyone to see or review. I had an amazing sales lady in the know. She has a side business authenticating. Smart darling Asian lady. I just used this keepall on a trip to Biloxi. I would have hated missing using it. I just cut the authenticated card off the tag. I'm running to look @ it now. Thank God I got it when I did!!! ❣❣❣❣❣💔❣

    Materially altered includes people who repaint and lie about it later, which is a PLAGUE on the resale market - it becomes partially fake, therefore fake, and paint ALWAYS peels, which the maker would refuse to repair obviously. I spoke to an obnoxious reseller in a comment section and asked her if she TOLD customers they were buying something painted and she got offended and insisted she didn't have to! I told her she did and a sale is only legal if they know what they're buying but she tried to gaslight me.

    There is some service now that can check from internal data, do it by people who work for backend. But anyways authenticators still make people think that their opinion are more reliable than data from internal by saying superfake can copy even make it show in data page lol.

    Preloved companies should not authentic anything. They should just act as a resell company without authentication services and let the customer authentic their purchases themselves at their own discretion. Doing this would also subsequently cause the prices of second hand designer goods to go down allowing a more fair preloved market. This would also cause a decrease in the reseller “business” allowing customers to acquire items in the retail store more readily. I know it won’t go back to the days where you’d find a designer item at a flee market for a steal but here’s hoping.

    Hypothesis: Customers are.changing their behaviour both for environmental and value reasons resulting in the preloved market growing fast. Fashion houses must see that 'new' sales will drop in the future as customer buying trends lean towards the preloved market.
    So could this simply be their early moves to grab control of those preloved markets for their own goods and add them as a channel for future sales. I suspect if they kill the market for their customers to sell thier expensive goods then the 'new 'sales will drop...
    However, if their customers sold it back to them it could then be sold as preloved fully authenticated item by the fashion house..how can also control volume and therefore price as its the only channel to buy their goods preloved and authenticated). You have a happy(ish) customer (who just sold their item through the only channel avaialble). But also a happy preloved customer who just bought a fully authenticated heirloom item...... and a fashion house that has new sales, preloved sales and also the glowing title of doing the right thing for the environment (locking down the market and controlling volume as well).

    So the situation will be if we buy Chanel we are stuck with it for life, as it will be almost impossible to re sell it even if you have the receipts etc, because none of it gatantee anything. So it will be no longer a good investment/ purchase. Who wants to be stuck with a bag forever? It is going to backfire, perharps they want to make it to become scarcer to turn into an Hermes, however there is no use to it, if you can't resell it.

    Here's the deal. If people can no longer resell their luxury goods then the luxury brands will shoot themselves in the foot. You buy something, you decide you don't love it and want to resell. Many people will use the money from the resell to go towards a new luxury purchase. If that possibility drys up, then a lot of people will simply decide they don't want the luxury brands anyway.

    I agree with the legal opinion. Pre loved stores which has nothing to do with the brand or copyright of the brand are boldly stating that a bag they got from God knows where, is an authentic item!!! I’m surprised this practice of selling preloved bags has gone on for this long.

    People are probably not paying their high prices anymore and moving towards pre-loved so now Chanel is raging war on pre-owned businesses. They are greedy and don’t care about anything else. They can do whatever they want as a business. Now, it’s up to us what we will do based on what they are doing
