While it's a shame he wasn't taught to fly, I love hearing birds having only one owner for many years. That's a person that knew the commitment and stuck to it. They brought him to a rescue, instead of putting him on craiglist. I'm sure they really wanted to bring him along, but it's great he found another wonderful home

    • @sonofhibbs4425

Very true. It’s sad, but I think most pet birds don’t make it past 3 years with their owner. Either through that owner losing interest in them and getting rid of them, or the bird dying from negligence. You’d think the initial expense of the bird would be enough to deter irresponsible owners, but it doesn’t. I’m so sick of hearing about those cases. These animals deserve a happy caring lifelong home.
I’m glad there are bird rescue facilities, but even that doesn’t often meet their full needs. I think part of the problem with birds getting adopted is that there is still a lag in knowledge about their proper care. Most everyone knows someone who has a dog or cat and about how to take care of one, but not so much with birds. Most every town, no matter how small has a vet knowledgeable in treating dogs and cats. But it’s hard to find a good avian vet. It’s better than it was. Internet helps, but it’s also hurting in that some unscrupulous people will watch videos and think to get one to ‘entertain’ them. The novelty wears off and the person’s patience wears thin. 😔 it makes me so angry.
Like having a child, pets are a commitment. ♥️🙏🏻

Totally agree. My grandfather has had a few of his parrots for 60 + years. You really need to understand the commitment that comes with them and ideally have a home in mind for after you, as so many parrots outlive their owners. It's beautiful that this parrot has had two wonderful homes.

I just really hope they’re careful if he does learn to fly. Over 25 years ago my cousin had a wonderful cockatoo who could fly. She brought her outside occasionally but she never flew far and always came back. Then one day it was snowing so she brought her outside. She flew up into the snow and never came back. She spent months looking for her, putting up flyers up to 10 miles away, checking in with every animal rescue. Just that one time she flew and never came back.

I’ve had my parrot for 30 years, and I would never in a million years get rid of him!
I have given up my dream to move out of the country before because of my love and commitment for him. They told me I would have to quarantine him for six months once I arrived with him, and there was not a chance in hell I would do that to my baby!
When you truly take your love and commitment seriously to these beings who literally are a part of your family once you bring them into your home, there is no way you would get rid of them!

I have a huge flight aviary, I welcome any parrots people have to give up, and I won't breed them if that is the owners request, though most don't mind, and if they don't get on with my flock, I find them good homes. People get old, sick, things that are out of their control and these creatures live extremely long lives.

Generally, they are high upkeep, a bit like a woman, need constant interaction, loving and attention, but when you need them, they're there for you. The big mistake people make is not understanding just how long different species can live, often outliving their owners and needing re-homing or they are just abandoned. Adoption is a good option rather than buying from a pet shop or breeder, because that just puts more abandoned birds on an already filled market. Like racing greyhounds and racing horses! I've learnt so much from our 2 little Cockatiels, also of the Parrot family.

Birds aren't insane, they just are meant to live in a completely different way than what a lot of humans keep them as. They are flock animals, meant to constantly disassemble/chew things apart as part of the foraging process, and solve problems all the time. Keeping a parrot alone in a small cage without intellectually stimulating toys and not letting it out of the cage frequently (as opposed to for instance the lady in the video who takes good care of the parrot) is a deeply inhumane treatment and torture. It's like locking up a husky in a small cage and act surprised when it gets behavioral and health issues.

It’s not that he hasn’t been given room to fly…if I heard the sweet lady correctly, she said he’d never learned HOW to fly, and that she takes him out & tries to get him to flap his wings & that she wants him to fly! So far he hasn’t learned how but she thinks she needs to build up his wing muscles first before he’ll be able. So, there’s no reason for him to pluck himself silly, and that’s why he doesn’t! Doobie IS apparently VERY healthy & why shouldn’t he be? He has lots of room, plenty of friends to play with and an owner that dearly loves him! I wouldn’t worry about Mr. Doobie, he seems just fine!🦜

No one said he would never get to fly unless I missed that part but he's a perfectly healthy bird he literally just needs to practice so his wing muscles can develop she just has to keep motivating him to flap and kind of force him to try flying like putting him on a perch where his only option is to jump or fly (of course with a couch or bed or some super soft cushion because he will inevitably fall at first) and he's good lol

Some species don't usually adjust like that, Cockatoos in particular. They can be one hell of a handful even in a healthy, stable environment. Strange that he wouldn’t learn on his own. When I had a conure I hand fed him baby bird formula (he was an accident, owner didn’t have time or space for a flock of baby conures) from when he didn’t even have feathers yet. He built up his wing muscles instinctively by flapping his wings wildly, and from then on he taught himself how to fly, and he was a good one at that.
I’d love to hear other experiences though, I just simply thought it was something birds just learned by instinct.

    • @marinelandjoy479
      @marinelandjoy479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

Depends a lot on the size of the bird and their individual confidence level. smaller birds like parakeets and conures can take to flying in no time and seem to have a lot of natural confidence to it. bigger birds like cockatoos and macaws have a much harder time, especially if it's been a couple decades with little to no experience between a lack of confidence and the likehood of the wings having lost those proper flight muscles over time. For some bigger birds it can be painful even to fly if they havn't been taught to build up those muscles again. I myself have a nearly 10 year old B&G macaw who we're trying to teach to fly. He does very short distances from chair to chair and knows how to fly across a room quite well if he happens to gey startled by something, but building his confidence and teaching him that he can fly when he wants to is a big big part of that training process :) (my other bird on the other hand, a 6 year old Green Cheek Conure, took no time at all to fly once his wings came in and does it when he wants)

Thanks for taking care of him. I hope he's with you for a long time, these birds live as long as humans and It's always sad to see one past along or far worse, surrendered. If you have a pedestal fan, they can help simulate wind and he might begin lifting up his wings and building muscle, it's instinctual for many birds including the cockatoo/cockatiel. Australia is a windy nation so they use the wind to travel further and use less energy.

There are huge flocks here in Canberra, along with galahs. Both are easy to attract to garden or deck. A more sensible bird as a pet is the cockatiel, a sort of miniature cockatoo, which only lives up to 30 years

Honestly, this lady is the GOAT of bird ownership. He is so well cared for & environmentally enriched!! He looks so well, which in itself is amazing - rescue birds are SUPER hard to get resettled and rebonded with a new person and stress results in feather plucking. I wish her 28 happy years with Doobie 🥰

To see your parrot fly would be amazing, but just know there are predator birds in the sky, they could easily swoop down grab your parrot and fly off with him.
    Eating him for dinner.

sometimes there's no choice :( She might have been moving into a nursing home or something, we don't know :( These birds are VERY loud too! A friend of mine actually had to give one up, it devastated her, but it was that or eviction & finding a new place she could move to wasn't a viable option for her

    • @glenbe4026

28 years. If the owner got him when she/he was 22 that owner is now 50. An age where serious illnesses start to become more common. If the owner got him at 42, that means that original owner is now 70 thus likely forced into a nursing home. The cockatoo was obviously well loved and well cared for by his previous owner so it silly to be calling that original owner out especially without knowing the details.

I would like to know whoever disliked this video .... why? This is absolutely adorable! I'm sure the person who owned him before was devastated to have to give him up. 28yrs is a long time to spend with a human if your an bird/animal. My grandmother had 13 birds & there were probably 4 or 5 different species of birds and when she passed 4 of them also passed. She had the 4 for about 34-35yrs. So one could only imagine how those birds felt.
