    Wow when you talked about how sensitive she is to rejection and of course there's all that very clear self harm (the plucking), I just felt so strongly for her. I am exactly the same way, I'm covered in scars and the slightest hint of rejection or abandonment will put me into panic mode. Seeing Jersey made me feel like I'm not alone, and has given me a bit of faith that there are people out there that ARE understanding and accommodating about that kind of situation. Faith in humanity restored a little bit.

    My bird ( a double yellow-headed amazon) had 2 major heartbreaks in her life. She first went into a depression when my Grandma died and she didn't talk much or want much attention for a while after she passed away and ended up saying "where's Grandma" afterwards and she had never said that before.
    Then, years later she had a egg that dropped down to the bottom to her big cage and broke when it landed. She was so much worse when that happened. She didn't even speak for 2 weeks. That was a huge deal for her. She's one of those birds who talks almost all day especially in the morning and around dinner time and when any of the family lives or comes home.
    They are really sensitive animals that can feel deeply and I don't think a lot of people realize that. I'm glad Jersey has you to count on. ❤

    Cockatoos, parrots in general, can be so much fun. And yes, they are sensitive and need attention. I tell people who think they want a parrot -- don't get one, but if they insist, give the bird the same amount of attention @ the beginning as you will months later. Parrots are high maintenance and require a lifetime of commitment. Jersey is adorable and it's because you give her everything she needs.

    Birds, especially all in the parrot family, and some in the predatory raptor family, are sentient beings that have a range of emotions and thought processes, just as we do. Not only that, they truly have a wicked sense of humour, and genuinely feel mirth and elevated feelings of love and compassion. Our family, when we moved into the house my father built, back in the sixties, "inherited" a beautiful pink and grey Galah. She was 50 years old when we took her in, and she lived a further 35 very happy years. The amount of joy that beautiful creature brought to the family was contagious, and I'm not ashamed to admit that this 61 year old tattooed, fugly biker cried like a little girl when I got the news that she'd gone, peacefully in her sleep. I actually surprised myself, up until that point, I didn't think I had the ability to cry. Boy, was I wrong.

    Marlene has rescued and fostered so many birds. The wonderful thing is that their cages are only for sleeping. Otherwise they get to roam a large house with so many perches that look like trees with toys everywhere. Sometimes they get to go outside but only with supervision. It's a wonderful bird sanctuary home.

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Some birds like their cages though, especially rescues. My cage is on big wheels, with handles on each end to make it easy to move around, cause the cage is constantly moving from room to room, into my bedroom, into my living room, into my kitchen, outside onto my enclosed veranda, outside fully to chat with the wild birds etc etc. I keep the 2 little doors on the end open permanently & have toys & treats on the roof, but mine still spend the vast majority of their time inside it, cause that's where they feel safe, after a decade of abuse before coming to live with me.
      I have perches all around too btw, a great big tree that's stuck through a milk crate to hold it steady, cause it's so big, various smaller ones & even perches screwed into my walls, after one of mine decided to fly into the kitchen, where I was, after I'd left them in the bedroom. He landed on the cooktop, luckily it wasn't on, but I put the perches on the wall after that in case it ever happened again, to give him somewhere safe to land. He's been moulting for months though & refusing to fly, so yet to use them, but even once the moult is over, he's still not really going to leave his cage, cause he just doesn't want to

      Aw, thank you for sharing your story. So happy he's with you now! Cages should be a place where they can feel safe and have access to any time. Marlene's birds will go back to their cages sometimes during the day just to chill, eat, play with toys, etc. 💛

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@gothic_oma yeh, that's the key thing, giving them access to it if they need it. tbh, this is the first time I've ever had a cage for an animal. I've had budgies before & rabbits & others & never had a "cage". They've always had their own mats/areas that were exclusively theirs, so they had a safe space, but they never needed a cage. My current ones REALLY need their cage though to feel safe. They are getting better, they will play on the floor of the cage now (when I'm right next to them, if I leave the room they won't), not just sit up as high as they can in it, so hopefully one day they'll actually use perches & be willing to move rooms on my shoulder or similar. Is a LONG process with abused birds I'm learning 😢

    A long time ago, I knew someone who had a cockatiel, and I think that was the first moment I saw a cockatiel.
    I loved the way they pecked at their favorite boxes with their beaks, it was so cute.
    Up until then, I thought I wanted to get a parrot that was good at talking, like a cockatoo.
    However, the more I saw and learned about cockatiels, the more cute they became.
    The charm of the cockatiel is that they are sweet and gentle. They are very friendly to people.
    If you bring your hand to them, they will bow their heads and urge you to "scratch me. When they are out of their cage, they tend to relax by their owner's side rather than play.
    They just want to be with their owners!

      my little lorikeet girl was kept in a cage a couple of cms longer than her body for a decade. She didn't bite on arrival though, had "learned helplessness", much like circus elephants that don't try to escape or resist, her spirit was broken & she just did whatever she was made to, then rocked & plucked & cried when she got back to her cage. My boy (both rescued from the same home) came with gloves for changing his food & water, cause he'd bite badly. His only interaction with anyone was biting when his food was done. His cage was a little larger, but not much, he was in a better emotional state though, due to defending himself with the biting.
      Both are in the same cage now & gradually learning to be birds again & to interact with each other. My girl does now bite, which is great! She screams at me & if I don't stop whatever it is, she bites me. I love her being asserting like that & feeling confident enough to bite me :) My boy no longer bites, he feels safe now :) Still does occasionally when I'm doing stuff in the cage, but easy to predict & avoid.
      The fun one is when my girl decides I'm not allowed to put my hand in the cage to give them food & screams about it, causing my boy to jump in & defend the cage too, at her request lol. When that happens I've got beaks from all directions!!!!!!! Overall though, my boy's fine now & if he's in a bad mood, I just stick some yogurt on my hand & he licks instead of biting :)
      My girl also bites me if I make any mistakes eg if my hand slightly slips while doing step up training, or if I DARE try to move my hand while she's on it during step up training. If I do that I get a tirade of abuse from her, along with the biting & then ongoing biting my hand if I try to put it anywhere near her for step up training again for the next week lol She is very cute though & just finding herself & figuring out how to feel safe :)
      Saddest thing of all is my boy says "I love you" over & over, anytime he's stressed or scared 😢Makes me wonder what happened in his former life that hearing "I love you" was something to associate with fear & stress

      I'm glad they're with me now too! I got them when their owner died & relatives were going to ship them off to any pet shop that would take them, so I said I'd take them instead & very glad I did! I hate to think what would have become of them if that had happened, especially my little girl! Boy probably would have ended up in an outdoor aviary somewhere & been ok (I would hope anyway) but likely they would have been split up & I hate to think what would have happened to my little girl if that had occurred! She relies on the boy SO much to feel safe
      My order of $170 worth of food & toys arrived for them today. Ouch on my wallet & their response - squawking at me to get out & stop changing their cage by adding new goodies lol
      They're managing to tolerate 1 new toy inside their cage though, had it on the roof of the cage with them for a few hours to get used to it, now it's hanging under a full smart toy treat wheel, so as to counter the scary factor with the awesome factor in that section of the cage, so no freak out's over it, happy to go near it, I just need to be patient in waiting for them to actually use it though & in waiting to add any of the other new toys. 1 day to reach the point where something new can be inside the cage is actually really good with these 2 though, sign of great progress :-) (plus it's a good toy I think, natural design, so not too scary, even thought it's nice & colourful)

      Hi Debbie! See, I see you everywhere! Do you watch Marlene's channel too? It's a good one, she has something like 12 birds. Vinny, her pink galah cockatoo, is somehow unbelievably advanced, like he should be studied. He's truly a conversational parrot, in fact I don't think he does mimicry at all. But he's very hard to understand and it mostly sounds like gibberish until you watch him a while and get used to him. But maybe you already know all about the box loving little gangsta.....

Her motto is "Engaged, Not Caged". I mean, they do all have cages for sleeping at night (except one), but otherwise they're usually free. Her birds are all quite entertaining, and like I said before, Vinny is an enigma. Her channel is a mixture of entertainment and education, and she knows how to produce a video. Once the follicle has been damaged, the feather can't grow back. It'll try a few times, then quit. I have an eclectus parrot who is the love of my life (aside from my husband, of course) and he's plucked himself nearly naked due to pain he experienced after swallowing bits of foam from an old sofa. My boy has a full tail, and the outside of his wings are good, but the underside is plucked back to showing the bones, like this bird. He still has his fluffy green head, too. And he can fly. He's also a smart bird, and is so much fun. He can talk, and knows what words will get him what he wants. I consider myself blessed to have the love of a bird, a real wild and undomesticated animal. Yes, but in this case the bird would likely die a cruel death. Raised in captivity, need a warm place and would a flock accept her? Would she be able to forage? It would be great if there were no more bird breeding in captivity, but we are still dealing with the consequences of that, and of people who buy birds and then neglect them.
