I think humans are meant to have these kinds of relationships with animals. It’s so magical!
Are you as ignorant as this person? Do not feed wildlife, they need to continue foraging for themselves and not depend on humans...look up the research
It's pretty easy in many parts of Australia if you are calm and kind
Social animals will form relationships with anything that's willing to exchange food and grooming services. But there's not many species that are willing to offer food for the sake of just hanging out with the animal. So humans are a really good friend for animals, the animal doesn't need to do anything extra to pay back for the food like he would be required in a relationship with his own kin. Animals probably think that we are a bit weird because we give them food without asking anything in return, but the really smart ones might have realised that we have lots of extra food and we have things they have never seen before that would seem magical even to humans who lived millennia ago, and that we will help injured animals or an animal that comes to us to request help, as long as the animal can make us understand what it needs. A human is a very good friend to make, as long as the animal finds the right kind of human to befriend. Humans can be cruel just for entertainment too, and play tricks on too trusting animals even when the animal lives to tell the tale. Someone once quipped that humans are to other animals the same as faeries are to humans, except that we are real.

We live 90 minutes north of Sydney and have had cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets, Indigenous miner birds, and a little family of top-notch bush pigeons and, seasonally, satin bower birds come to our balcony for a feed every afternoon for 22 years.
I was in hospital having cancer surgery and on the morning of my surgery my daughter awoke to 43 cockatoos standing silently along the rails, all facing inwards toward our glass sliding door....like some somber ceremony. They never come in the morning. It scared the sh*t out of her....😳..she didn’t know if this was a good thing or not.

Thanks for sharing your story! Brought tears to my eyes, as a very good friend is having cancer surgery today. Many times I’ve seen animals in tune with the events in their human friends’ lives. Those 43 cockatoos lined up to support you in spirit, I have no doubt.
@@Jayasree0627 Yes. It was breast cancer and when I’d completed my surgeries, radio and chemo treatments I’ve been clear for 5 years (which is when you know you’ve beaten it).😊👍🏽

They'd have to pay a lot of rent, considering a lot of houses in Sydney are in the million dollar range or more. Even crappy ones. It's the land that they are on. Sydney's the most expensive place to buy and live. But beautiful beaches and, beautiful cockatoos.
Cockatoos are some of the most loyal friends you can ever make, up there with dogs. Whenever I'm having a bad day, I'll come out to my backyard and just sit with the cockatoos, and they can often tell if I'm feeling down because instead of searching for food they'll just sit with me on a chair or hammock. While many cockatoos come around, there's a few returning friends that I always see, like this one with a wing defect (but it doesn't hinder his ability to fly!) and his children, or this other one with a missing foot. Once they know you're not a threat, they start to make friends with you, play with you, but the best part is they're not restricted to a home or sanctuary! They can fly off wherever they want, make families and see so much. Sometimes there's periods of times where a certain cockatoo doesn't turn up for a while, and at first I worried, but now I know they always come back eventually, even years later. I like to think some take holidays, or some even move to a new area, but whenever they're passing through they make sure to stop and say hi. They are beautiful creatures!

@@michaelpark5681 p1ss off ithe, the small amount of feeding of cockatoos and other species that live in urban and periurban areas doesn't even replace the lost food sources from habitat destruction in those same areas. They only feed at hers for a short while and spend much of the day still foraging. Cockatoos also displace pigeons to an extent. Having a modest steady supply of healthy food also results in cockatoos less likely to go through bins, create a mess and potentially get sick from eating rubbish.

For all the people who are sad because they don't have cockatoos in their country: Sparrows and blue tits are also cute animals and they are very grateful for a flat bowl with fresh water and a bird feeder with sunflower seeds and peanuts on the balcony. It's so cute to watch them when they are washing themselves in the bowl.

Sorry, the noise a cockatoo makes (and how they love to destroy and eat everything) makes feeding them always a nuisance. 😅
Till she stops feeding them and they starve to death.
My friend would love this. She loves birds and loves to observe them. She was feeding a crow that learned that if it "called" her, she would bring him something to eat. It ended up with the crow teaching his youngster how to call her to get food. But, unfortunately, the youngster never had a chance to call her for food on its own, since they soon moved away.
While her mother was supplying crows with breakfast every morning. You could see a flock of them gathering in the trees in their backyard every morning. It looked quite ominous. She came out with a big can of dog food, shake the food on the ground. They waited until she went inside, eat and then left until the next morning. Sometimes one of them came in the evening, to play with the dog toys that the dog left behind. And then one time a hawk or something ended up in the morning in their backyard, eat the crow's breakfast while they were watching it from the trees. It came back the next morning, but this time, the crows chased it away. Apparently, they weren't willing to give up their crow cafe.
They are smart and wonderful birds.

This is the perfect way to have parrots in my opinion. They are friendly, you get to chat on a regular basis, feed them, and at the end of the day they go home. The perfect guest! I’ve always loved big parrots but never wanted one. Especially when you consider the bird would more than likely outlive me!
Depends on the species, cockatoos are best enjoyed this way as they are very high maintenance as pets but some other species make good companions especially the smaller species like conures that have a lifespan of a few decades rather than the best part of a century.
I have a small quaker parrot and he's now 26 years old. He's a pain in butt but he's really cute and I think he's smarter than the cats and dogs. He's now a grumpy old man. He'll squawk if the lights aren't off when he wants to go sleep or if there's too much talking in the house. He's gotten sensitive like that in his older age. He's never locked in his cage so he's free to roam. If he knows you're eating, he'll fly over to you and demand your food lol.
People don't realize this but parrots are very sensitive animals. You can never leave them alone.
@@saltycat662 I never leave my Muloccan cockatoo alone. His cage (which I unfortunately have to lock if nobody is watching/lest he literally tears the casing and screens off the window) is in the living room, as far from the kitchen as possible. He has a stand in the basement for those big screen hockey or football nights! His favourite is his outdoor cage; which is small enough that it can be moved around the yard. I wish I could build him an aviary but unless I can make one completely of metal-he’ll eat it!

This woman has probably added a good 20-30 more years of life to these birds. Good on her.
And her own life is much more enriched I would imagine. I know that interacting with parrots is such a great way to start the day as I eat breakfast with a small flock of these guys and a fairly large flock of lorikeets very noisy but none the less beautiful lorikeets every morning and head to work with a great big smile on my dial for the best part of the morning or at least til Marty pisses me off.
Yeah I don't post anything really I actually took over my nephew's channel pretty much so I think I will start a channel from scratch dedicated to the beautiful parrots I get to interact with here in Queensland

Yes they’re smell! I’m so happy to hear that you can get close enough to them in the wild to smell them. When I owned one I would bury my face under his wing and coke out w a white face! But that lovely smell. I don’t want to “own” anymore , but rather learn how to enjoy them and them me in the wild. She has found a perfect blend. I want to do this too But how don’t stop then destroying ur plants when ur not around? That’s the only thing that’s stopping me atm. I have a small courtyard full of plants, it’s a garden. I bet she’ doesnt have any plants on her balcony.

I used to live in a rural town in Victoria Australia that had a grain store, where trucks full of grain empty into underground collector that pipe it to silos. Hundreds of Corella Parrots would wait on power lines to feed on the spilt grain after the trucks left. The parrots knew the delivery schedule. I spoke to the grain silo owners and they told me the parrots feeding on the spilt grain helped them as it stopped mice and rats from developing as a problem from the grain was lying around.
If I could have wild parrots come around my home I would literally die of happiness

They are very loud & noisy with their squawking! I see them everyday, their is a colony of them at the nearby University and more than once they have woken me up in the morning when they decide to hang out on the phone lines outside my window!
Wild birds just hanging out and flying freely outside was one of the coolest thing I've experienced in Australia. Apparently, it's so common to the locals that they're equivalent to seeing crows (in the US). 🤯

They're so smart, I made them custom puzzles to solve and they figure it out so quick! If you find them getting too naughty you can scare them off with soft toys :) they're absolute characters and we love our locals!

@@andydufresne8034 I think the big difference in Australia is no rabies, so people are comfortable living alongside wildlife & welcome them in, whereas in countries with rabies, I think people get paranoid the wildlife will cause their death & so don't welcome them into the cities in the same way we do in Australia. We intentionally build/leave "bush corridors" so that the wildlife can move around & get into even built up urban areas & share the space with us. I think that's the difference, I don't think that's the norm in the US or much of Europe. India do the same as Australia with welcoming animals into their neighbourhoods, but doesn't seem to be the norm in the US/UK etc & I think that's the real difference, rather than hunting or "pest control"
@@mehere8038 Yeah no I don't think we have any of that. We have some deer and other typical animals but thats it. And never in the cities, only in smaller areas, and even then you don't see them often. Prob different in some european countries though
Yeah, I'm from Europe too. Animals you see in cities are usually pigeons, magpies, ravens, but most birds, squirrels, deers they live in forest never seen one in city. Only exception is driving from road, sometimes deers cross the road

Seeing them avoid the grapes cracked me up. I have great memories of cockatoos hanging upside-down from an arch in our backyard teasing the dog, they have a wonderful sense of humour.
they are known to have ptsd of grapes from rain forests because in the 1800's and 1900's before humans made houses in those areas the cockatoos got lured by foxes and such with grapes. the animals like foxed would nip some grapes and put them next to a bush then ambush the birds. Thats why they avoid grapes
Imagine this, without having the expenses of $800 (or more) for one bird, the expense of a cage, vet bills, cleaning the cage, and worrying if the bird is getting enough attention or is plucking its feathers due to stress. How wonderful! That’s it, I’m moving to Australia!!
You can have a wild magpie and kookaburra as well. They will come every day if you feed them.

Mine, too. They have loads of character and attitude. Once you invest time with a crackle of cockatoos, especially where food and fresh water is concerned, they can’t resist making their own particular impressions on you.😊
While they are awesome looking birds and incredibly intelligent, they are also incredibly destructive to anything wooden around the house. Also they are really really loud.

I have a galah and yes she is right they always smell so fresh and lovely , sort of like the scented washing powder for washing machines or when you lay your head in a freshly washed pillow case and fresh sheets, they are covered in a fine powder that smells so fresh and nice

They really do smell very pleasant especially if you're feeding them healthy foods and such. They can smell like a light fruit smell too. It can vary or change but birds have this fresh light smell all the time. Makes cuddling very pleasant lol.

Before I watched this video, I could never have imagined how wonderful it would be to see these birds flying outside my window. I always imagined them deep in the jungles like macaws. But then I also saw the video of the Alaska fisherman who feeds fish scraps to dozens of bald eagles on the docks every morning. The average American would be lucky to see one eagle outside a zoo in a lifetime. And the lady in southern California that literally feeds hundreds of hummingbirds on her property. The internet has shown me so many beautiful and wondrous things. Thank you for sharing your Cockatoo video. 😂
I see eagles all the time and I live in the suburbs in Ohio lol. They literally have made nests in my trees. Not as uncommon now that DDT isn't being sprayed everywhere anymore.
Bald Eagles are also super common where I grew up in Washington State. They're more common than hawks.
Yes indeed. I am in Canberra, the Australian Capital City and I have hundreds of these cockatoos around my home every day. Along with many other parrot species. Indeed most of the Australian parrots live in open country and only a few live mostly in thick forest.
Hey now. I see bald eagles now and then! A few months back, I saw one zooooom and dive onto a critter in a field, probably a mouse or rabbit. They've really bounced back in population.

When people from abroad consistently remark about all the “deadly” creatures in Australia, I’m always baffled because the thing I love most about living here is our wildlife.. 🥺 we have so many incredible and weird and beautiful animals, with a massive respect for them we coexist quite happily.
The birds have been my true love since I was a child. All the different unique and haunting calls in the early hours and the afternoons, their beautiful colours and funny faces.
Kookaburras and Crows are my favourites 🥰
Currently have a set of 5 large baby magpies visiting us daily, my dad loves to feed them he lights up every time they come to the yard. Also have a long standing bond with the crows, a handful of regulars, who come and say hello and hang out for a little.. their intelligence never fails to fascinate me, very clever birds. They recognise my voice and my face from a far 😂

Cockatoos come by some days too, but I think it’s the crows territory so they don’t stay too long 😅
I have an alexandrine parrot who loves to hear all the various bird calls and has learnt to reply to all of them!
It’s never quiet here but it’s always peaceful, if that makes sense?

Watch out for the drop bears. Koalas have to be respected as they might look cute but their claws are really long. I have a big respect of wild kangaroos having had a male kangaroo confront me to protect his females. I looked down and slowly walked backwards away from the male.

i dont think "deadly" is a good adjective....deadly seems to be more precise....
for example all the deadly snakes, sharks, spiders, and even ANTS......even the plants there can kill you.
@@sabin97 I despise the Funnel Web Spider, even though its niche in the environment is catching flying or ground pests. Jumping Spiders all the way! Now, if only the females wouldn't eat their mates...

This is by far the best way to enjoy parrots!... they are flying machines. Their entire anatomy is designed to make them great flyers. They are NOT meant to sit in a small cage and never fly. (I used two own two of them, and realized this from personal experience. ) Thanks for sharing this video and showing that these amazing parrots can be enjoyed without capturing them, and owning them.

@@torduck4804 Exactly! And sadly, many parrot owners get burned out, and dont want to be parrot owners for decades... or they dont make arrangements for their parrots when they pass away. Either way, the parrots loose. I feel so sorry for parrots that live in captivity. And I was a parrot owner for many decades... one passed away and one went to my brother. Raised from a baby, and he is now almost 40 yrs old.

@@torduck4804 I was traveling for long periods due to work. He was being left alone too much. My brother loved him and still has him. He wouldn't give him back even if I asked. Lol... had him since a baby...spoon fed him...he is now almost 40 yrs old.
But no matter how nice owners try to make it for the parrots, it's not a good life . I would not do it to a parrot again.
Nerd Diddles My brother has a macaw kept as a pet in captivity for many years. I parrot-sat for a while when he was moving and learned her personality. She's so sweet and smart! But I just want to cry when i think of her. I think she should be free and not sit in a cage day after day.

My late dear wife lived for many years in Perth, Western Australia, where she had a similar relationship with the local Kookaburras. Whenever she came home from work they would fly around her and accompany her to the house where she fed them. They also perched on her shoulders and head.
My Condolences Mr. Robertson, she sounds like a lovely and wonderful woman.

Kookaburras are so beautiful, and nothing beats their laugh. I miss watching them, as I moved to Ireland ten years ago. Thank you for reminding me about them, your wife was definitely special, as Kookaburras are particular in trusting people. Whenever I get back home one day, I will remember your story when I see a Kookaburra.

Australia is such a land of opposites. You have gorgeous birds, cute koalas, fun kangaroos & you also have the most venomous snakes & spiders anywhere! I’d still love to visit if I were younger.

How is it opposites? Have you seen the beaks on these things? lol You're seriously much more likely to get a serious injury from one of these than a snake! Steve Irwin was famously petrified of our parrots like these! No Aussie animals will hurt you if you treat them with respect though

Yes, Australia has lots of stuff to be aware of , like box jellyfish, & so much more. But Aussies might be jealous of Florida. We have 6 venomous snakes, 5 of which are pit vipers, we have gators everywhere, including our cities, in ponds, creeks, swimming pools, rivers, parks, lakes, brackish ocean water, we have the flesh eating disease at some beaches & dangerous rip tides, we have 2 toxic spiders, the brown recluse & the black widow, biting sand fleas & mosquitoes everywhere, common shrubs w/ 2 inch thorns, carpenter ants and biting red ants, stinging jellyfish, plus mountain lions, & bears, and FL is the shark capitol of the world.
It's so nice to see them still in the wild and not being kept in a cage. ♥️
We've never kept our parrot in a cage. He has a cage he hangs out at and sleeps in but he's never locked in. He is free to come and go as he pleases. Locking parrots in cages tend to depress them.
So special to see them enjoying their wild lives as they should.

This is a win/win for everyone. We used to have dolphins that would visit our side of the island. It was wonderful. It's this sort of positivity that people need in times like today.

It's so cool that you can have "pet" cockatoos who have the opportunity of staying out in the wild. I used to keep birds but there came a time when I decided I was doing the wrong thing. The birds I had (cockatoo and an amazon parrot) were rescues. I always felt so badly for them. They were older when I got them and fortunately they got to live out their lives with me. They even loved my hot tub! They were amazing animals, but they required a lot of attention and care, which most people can not give.

i live in an ordinary Sydney suburb, I see these guys every morning as well as the Black cockatoo's, tons of Rainbow Lorikeets on our red gum tree's, sometimes Rosella's and also Kookaburra's (those birds that make laughing noises). They always bring me so much joy just watching them, they can be so cheeky all of these birds. I've seen the Rainbow Lorikeet's get drunk on this particular tree they eat the cone part and start spinning on a branch like a whirlybird its such a sight!
My sister lives in Gladesville and the fruit bats at dusk are a sight to behold…… cicadas are deafening….. Sydney, my favourite city by far!!!

I had a Cockatoo and a Cockatiel for many years. They are WONDERFUL!!! Both smell so good and are incredibly funny, sweet, loving, affectionate, and very, very smart!!! I miss them big time. 💜💜
I've kept Budgies for about 15 years now and I've had males and females and they all had that new baby smell and were very soft. I only have a 12 month old male at the moment who loves to take a bath under the running tap sitting in my hands, after a bath he smells like a wet dog but once he's dried out he has that new baby smell and is super soft. His talons grow really quick after a trim and can be like razor sharp needles, he loves to sit on my nose and falls asleep on it when we sit in the recliner chair watching TH-cam vids so I really notice that nice smell and feel the pain as he digs those talons in. There are about 6 species of parrot/Cockatoo living in my area and when he's outside he loves chatting with them especially the lorikeets. I've had a total of 9 budgies over the years and they all have different personalities, I've now had 3 outstanding males, extremely loving and smart but the young fella I have at the moment is the only one that has ever talked, probably because he has been the only one that has been on his own. It's pretty special when he greets you every morning and says I love you Daddy, I say to him I love you Zero but I have never taught him to say I love you Daddy, I have no children so the word "Daddy" doesn't get said in my house so I have no idea how he learnt the word Daddy and knew how to add it to the words I love you? Thought I'd share my little story, I know it makes me smile everyday so that a good thing.
This has put a big smile on my face. What a wonderful thing to have in your life, absolutely beautiful to see.

They got along very well. He still calls for her (sadly she passed) here kitty kitty or cat the Kayra( after the Star Treck crew member) my barn cats slept on top of their cages & one gave birth on top of the cage.
As for owning one, they need tons of attention. That’s why they pluck their feathers & eventually they damage the follicle & stop growing. Greys dot this too.
20 years ago I studied abroad in Australia and had an amazing final class trip in Airlie Beach. While we stayed at the hotel/hostel waiting for our 3-day trip on a 90-footer through the Whitsundays, there were wild flocks of these huge white birds. The first time I had ever seen them in the wild, just walking on the ground like they owned the resort! I saw many beautiful birds in that three-month semester, but the cockatoos and lorikeets in their natural habitat were a blessing to behold.
A friend of mine managed a camper park in the NT and every day he’d have to go around switching off all the taps the parrots would turn on to drink and wash under.
Most parrots have that sweet Dusty smell. It's their dander. I absolutely love it 💜😁

My children and I meet a beautiful cockatoo in Caines on the beach with his/her Kahu. The cockatoo was 80 years old. Wish I could look as lovely and be as wise as this gorgeous bird.
What a magical experience! So envious. Od love to have this bond with any wild animal, to be honest! I have a wild mouse in my shed that i leave treats for and bowls of water, but that's all that I have! Apart from my 10 bunnies, 2 dogs, and a cat. 👍

A wild mouse is also sweet, I use to feed a mouse I rescued off a glue trap. He was a tiny lil guy. 10 bunnies, 2dogs and a cat is Alotta Love ❤ ✌

They are great cookies for sure till they rip your timber to shreads when you don't stick to routine feeding. In Oz people change andrails to aluminium etc haha
They can be bastards. They are like a pack of bored teenagers who ride around the neighbourhood. Ripping bits of timber to shreds, stealing things, vandalising.
Another thing they like to do is pick pine cones off trees and drop them from height onto tin roofs and scream when they hear the bang.

Wow I love this 😍 I had no idea wild cockatoos just fly around there in an urban area, that’s like paradise! This makes me wish I lived in Australia 😊 I think this is the best way to have them as ‘pet’. As a human to be able to enjoy their company while they still get to enjoy their freedom the way an animal should, instead of being stuck inside a bird cage all day.

I had a cockatoo for 15 years. They are amazing animals (as are most), so smart, very judgemental and can be destructive. And loud!!! You have the best of both worlds, keeping them wild, but allowing them access.
I've never had birds as pets and so can't even conjure up a scenario of one being judgmemtal, but it made me laugh to read that. Is it a playful, funny type of thing, like they're just goofing around, or are they seriously evaluating you?
We lived in the same apartment block on the same side and it was such a treat to interact with the Cockies and Lories everyday ❤️ we moved to a different suburb and it’s amazing how the Cockies here have a different tone! It’s soo fascinating how each of them has a different personality.. such intelligent birds!
