I love how smart crows are, especially when they trust someone - they'll actually pass that info on to other crows (especially family) about good humans so they know who is/isn't a threat

The more I think about it the more I realize they were/are smart. We are the ones to "realize" damn, animals are smart. They can't do calculous or build a rocket, but they survive and adapt in ways we cannot yet fathom. Lemme know the next time a hurricane or fire comes and your home is outside in a tree or on the ground. Animals are gone hours before. We still see people sitting on their roof, house flooded waiting for a helicopter. Like I said, they are smart.

    Fun fact:
Crows have a history in being best friends with wolves. Crows often used to drop sticks from the trees for wolf pups to grab. Essentially playing some form of fetch. So dogs playing fetch is already hardwired into their brains due to crows.
Crows also flew behind pray that wolves are chasing so the wolves don’t lose it. In return the crow gets some of the meal if it was successfully caught.
So it’s not much of a surprise that Pepe and Xena grew attached almost immediately.

I'm actually not surprised he managed to bond with the dog, flocks of ravens (another bird in the Corvus family closely related to crows) in the wild will often bond with packs of dogs. The ravens help search for prey from the air and lead the wolves to it, in exchange the wolves tenderize the flesh of the prey for the ravens to share with them.
And it's not solely business too, because ravens will play with wolf pups. If they stopped hunting today, they'd likely still hang around each other.
This has been going on long enough that it's thought to be the influence behind Odin's depiction as traveling with a pair of wolves and ravens.
So as odd as this thing may seem, it's likely not the first time this has happened. Having a crow and a dog is also the closest you might come to being a god.

@@carpetclimber4027 Actually, there are several examples of human-animal symbiosis, historically and in modern times.
The most obvious one is dogs, of course. They were hanging out with our ancestors long before we ever figured out animal husbandry. There is also a kind of bird called a honeyguide, of which there are several types living throughout africa and asia. They'll actually lead people to honey bee nests, and the human honey hunter will naturally leave bits of comb, honey, and larva behind for the bird to feast on. Experienced honey hunter actually know a call that will attract honeyguides to help them out- it's actually pretty cool to watch. These are just two I can think of off the top of my head, but I'd bet real money there are more.
Of course- animals coming into conflict with other animals is nothing new either- just as humans coming into conflict with animals isn't.
Thing is, that kind of Symbiosis take a long time to evolve naturally. Humans aren't just the new kid on the block, we're far and away from the region and biome our species developed in (which is believed to be the fertile crescent around Africa. Very few people live there now.)

      sorry but imagine someone who feeds you also "pets" you around the nipples all the time, ofc there's gonna be hella affection in your eyes. the tail wiggle an obvious indication of a mating behavior, which all birds express, and birds in captivity get sexually frustrated with no same-species mates around and hormones kicking, and now there's a human constantly stimulating. pet bird owners usually know they shouldn't touch their birds anything but head. getting hormonal without action may lead to all sorts of problems, given captive bird (even if rescued) is already in pretty unconventional conditions. i love corvids too, both for their looks and intelligence, but anthropomorphism is an easy trap to fall into. animals are much more unique and interesting than watered down versions of humans (;

He didn’t like most men, only allowing my stepfather to handle him. He was aggressive towards males, even male children like my little brother, but anytime a female walked in the room Bird would whistle at them 😱 sometimes he would even say “pretty girl” after he whistled. So, I believe crows and black birds are just as intelligent as Bird was and able to tell the difference between male and female humans 🤔

He had small tree limbs that punctured some of his wings and he couldn't get out. So we carefully approached him and he sat there and watched us and let us remove the branches from his wings and he let us pet him. Then he flew off. My uncle found a small crow. We called him Bobby. He had stunning blue eyes and never fully lost them. They became more gray-ish but never black like on most crows. He stayed with uncle for around a year and a few months. He would perch on his shoulder and groom him, they tried to give him to a rescue but he wouldn't eat and would try to escape, so they took him back. Eventually he flew off on his own and never came. Last time we saw him was with a flock of pigeons, we are sure it was him because of the eyes and that he turned to look at us when he called him.

My dad fed the crows whenever there was left over chunks of meat/gristle. He would walk outside, call them, and they'd come by the dozen. They knew him very well.
    Extremely smart animals.

The gas station I work at has 2 crows that visit every morning around 7am waiting for me to give them some food. They will wait on opposite ends of the lot and call out when they see me walk outside. After a year they started bringing me trash (I pick up a lot of trash), because they think that's what I like lol. They know my schedule too! So when my schedule randomly changes a day they aren't there waiting for me. If I'm off work or sick they are extra vocal when I'm back. They still don't entirely trust me and keep 10 feet away usually.

Pepe's so fortunate to live with his humans yet still be wild. And I love the friendship with Zena. Who are the pets here?😅 Once as I was walking my dog, I came upon a crow wings spread on the grass near the sidewalk. Since I thought he was injured, I called a wildlife rescue, but when I returned later, he was gone. So I guess I can rest easy now knowing that crow was just "sunbathing"!😎

Pepe obviously remembers you and your husband and Xena because you are his family. I am so impressed at the way you raised him and gave him such a good life! He can be free to just be himself and that's the best thing anyone, human or animal, can possibly hope to be!

This is such a cool story. The humans did a great job of trying to find Pepe's parents and then did a GREAT job of raising him. The balance they created by letting him be wild, but he still chooses to spend time with them, is so amazing. Crows are such intelligent animals! Really glad to hear he is wary of strangers! ❤️

I had a baby crow we rescued when I was a teenager. We called him helper because he had to help with everything. He live outside and had several friend in the neighborhood. One day he disappeared on the same day one of his neighbor friends moved. I was very sad as I think he saw himself as part of our family. Never wanted him to have to stay with us. I wanted him to have his own life. Maybe he did.

@@StarFrost64 It won't, even cats who are much more spoiled than crows can live independently, and not to mention that they're one of the smartest birds so maybe adapting to any environment is never difficult for them.

I love to see this kind of story and wish everyone felt like I do that animals are truly a gift from God, to teach us to be better human beings. Bless the whole family including the beautiful pup and his great pal Pepe. I just wouldn't think this was even possible.

Bless you for taking such good care of such an amazing and funny bird. Growing up, we "raised" a crow chick back to life after it fell down a chimney, and it landed on me years later in a shop just to say hi. I missed that bird, but I'm happy to know it grew up to be independent. 😊

Amazing! Crows are some of the smartest species. My dad and his brother had a rescue jackdaw (a member of the crow family) as kids, and it was incredibly smart. Even after its wing had healed and they released it into the wild, the bird often visited them for snacks :)

Had a wild crow companion for a few years . Same interactions. Named him Bob and his wife Doris. Unfortunately two other crows worked out Bob and Doris were getting free food and they attacked and took over the territory.
I’ve never fed the new crows, but they’re still hanging around.
Bob started mimicking me and saying’Hello’. He used to rub up to his wife while saying’Hello’ to her. I used to get the ‘presents’too. Usually regurgitated berries at my doorstep.
They’re smart , affectionate and also demanding. They never forget a face.
I’d be careful allowing him on your head because of mites.
    Great video.
