Cameron reminds Char to keep fighting between Zeon and the E.F.S.F. outside the limits of Side 6 and Char responds, in a harassing manner, that as soon as Zeon defeats the Federation, the neutrality of Side 6 will be useless, since there will only be Zeon and all other colonies, neutral or not, will be absorbed by the principality.

If Zeon had done something like this, I can't possibly imagine the Earth Federation not out for Zeon's total destruction. Not defeat, *destruction.* You don't get away with killing half of Humanity like this, and such a strike would make it personal for virtually everyone left on Earth. They would be out for blood, and genocide against Zeonites would not be out of the question after their colony-drop on Earth causes what is by all intends and purposes a genocide.

It wasn't a world ending disaster. The colony drop was a decapitation strike, the only viable method to take out the fortress the federation had built underground. It was a valid military target, being hit with proportional force.
The damage caused by the federation fleet is what caused the colony to break up and go off target, and causing the widespread devastation.
After the federation withdrew from the peace talks, hoping to win a war of attrition versus zeon, it was zeon who agreed to outlaw weapons of mass destruction (something that wasn't a thing before this, the treaty of Antarctica). Zeon had full space superiority at this point, and could have dropped another colony unopposed, but chose not to, for humanitarian reasons. The federation was quick to tear up the treaty soon after the war, once there was more potential rebels to crush.

The colony spiralled in, which was probably the result of the Federation pouring its entire arsenal into the thing, likely in an attempt to raise its perigee above zero. Because of this, the shockwaves of it skimming the atmosphere and it breaking up in the atmosphere probably made the devastation even worse. However it likely avoided a total nuclear winter, -which was Zeon's aim (an utterly deranged solution to war - destroy your enemy's home and half their population to force them to live with you).-
Mixed this up with Axis. Operation British was meant to destroy the Federation's super-hardened command bunker, killing untold millions in the process...

  • @ennui9745

I think that most of the human population of around 12 billion had been moved to space colonies by this time, so Earth's population here was only over 2 billion. Nevertheless, Zeon killed more than a billion people with this colony drop alone, and their savage and brutal invasions and destruction of the other space colonies (you know, the people they were CLAIMING to be fighting for) killed billions more. The total death toll in the One Year War was around 6 billion, indeed half of the human population.
It's utterly hilarious yet disturbing that people unironically support the Principality of Zeon.

It might have broken into more then 3 pieces, and those pieces even if they were the large 3 seen here, would be more collapsible then any astroid. Like conpare deopping a 2x4 contruxted house vs a 20ft boulder. Its not the same. It would do alot but it probably wouldnt be the scale shown here. But its a anime so who really cares. Maybe all the metal was super dense idk

    • @strcmdrbookwyrm
      @strcmdrbookwyrm ปีที่แล้ว +82

@@skie6282 This might be a bit of a long reply, so I'm going to try and put a TL,DR at the start. While yes, the station being hollow does make it appear questionable that it could create this much destruction, I think that it might not even need to hit the ground with most of it's structure to cause such a death toll.
I'd also like to preface this by stating I'm not a gundam fan, and just stumbled into this because it looked cool.
So, one thing I'd like to point out is that even if it's hollow, this station was built to be very robust. After all, if it's the type of station I think it is, it generates artificial gravity by "rolling" along it's long axis. It would need to be durable to withstand that constant outward force, and the fact that it took several space naval bombardments on it's way down with only surface damage proves that even more. My theory is that the breakup was actually intentional to maximize damage.
But coming back from that tangent, I think that if the station crumpled as it flew through the atmosphere, you'd still have large chunks that would make it down in relatively large chunks that would be moving at a significant portion of the speed of sound. So while the damage done by these chunks could/would be closer to the impactor that made meteor crater than the dino killer, you'd still be shot-gunning the surface of the earth with these chunks. They'd probably have enough dispersion to hit some cities and cause damage to infrastructure, and would leave craters everywhere that couldn't be ignored.
Another thing to consider is that these things don't even have to hit the ground to start causing damage. Events like the Chelyabinsk meteor have shown that objects exploding in atmosphere can cause a lot of ground damage. This meteor managed to wound almost 1500 people to some degree and damage over 7000 buildings (mostly by shattering windows) and even partially collapse the roof of a factory building by just exploding while about 40 kilometers away and 23.3 kilometers up in the atmosphere (about 46km in strait line distance). Not bad for a 20 meter wide object, even if it was going at 18.6km/sec.
Before anyone complains about the mass, this thing was estimated to mass 7700 tons, so it had a lot of kinetic energy. And while chunks of this station may not be going as fast as that, they are defiantly larger and more massive. The explosive breakup of these pieces could do widespread damage and spread the non-exploded fragments even further. But even exploding chunks wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen. The sheer kinetic energy of this thing would probably heat the atmosphere up by a significant degree, which would mess with weather patters all over the globe.
All this doesn't account for one other thing: Have you ever thought about what sort of toxic stuff was in the station when it came down? There's probably fissiles, toxic chemicals, and propellants that would rain down along with the debris, poising large swaths of the earth's surface. Besides killing people, this could kill crops and wildlife, not to mentions push medical services beyond their limit. Logistics would break down, and food and clean water would be very hard to come by. You could also have small particles suspended in the upper atmosphere, which could wreak havoc on the earth's climate in any number of ways.
To put it simply; even if this thing doesn't have the mass to do a lot of damage via impact (which it defiantly does), it still has plenty of ability to cause widespread destruction even before it touches the ground.

It is important to note that Origin as well as most supplementary material is not technically cannon. The colony drop would have absolutely been enough to kill all life. Gundam has multiple different takes throughout the extended UC universe that often conflict with one another. Stardust Memory has one of the most full breakdowns of the aftermath of the colony drop and its math is so far from possible that its clear even the 'mostly' cannon content is wrong on the science of it all.

@@berandom2000 after seeing the damage that the colony drop enacted, it’s understandable why people joined and supported the titans. Zeon would also drop another colony on the earth post OYW, this caused the people of earth to become radicalized and gain a very fiery hatred for spacenoids. This is why the titans were very ruthless against spacenoids and did give a dam about the atrocities they committed towards them. All they wanted was revenge and they were going to get this revenge by any means necessary no matter how many spacenoids(innocent or zeon alined) they were willing to kill. In the end they became the earthnoid version of zeon.
It’s sad when you realize innocent spacenoids we’re tired of Zeon because zeon target colonies that stood against them or didn’t want to take part in their conflict. Most of the colonies were probably happy to hear about the titan creation hoping they would finally put a end to zeon or any zeon remnants, but then the titans would target their colonies just for assuming them to be zeon remnants with no evidence.

And while it was constructed completely in space, and like the previous coment mentioned would be made of some dense material in some parts The Origin's depiction of events makes it worse than the original source probably in a vin attempt at further realism not understanding that the original Gundam tried its best to do it's homework back in 1979.

Surviving assault by an entire fleet of waships equipped with this universe's weapons is absurd.
Large portions surviving descent through Earth's atmosphere is even more absurd.
No one is going to build something like that to be able to survive either event. The cost just to build one would already be staggering. Armoring it against both super weapons and a ram-pressure atmospheric descent would make the staggering cost just mentioned look cheap.
Even if the wealth and resources were available to build it, those on Earth would realize its possible use and they would scramble to prepare weaponry that could do the job if destroying it became necessary.
Even attempting to use such a structure as a weapon, much less succeeding, would trigger an all out war response. Weapons of mass destruction would come right out of storage and be used with little or no mercy.

@@dododostenfiftyseven4096 It absolutely had to be. I couldn't find any information about weight of Gundam's colonies, but I did go down a bit of a rabbit hole and I feel it would be a shame to keep my research to myself. Please be advised though, I am a dumb dumb and am probably wrong. I'll put a tl;dr for you at the bottom.
If we take the crater dimensions they give in 0083 as fact, then the piece of colony that hit Sydney made a crater 500km wide. That's insane, the largest ever impact crater left by an asteroid is under 200 km for reference. If we take a couple estimates I found on Wiki and WaPo it seems to be consistent that the the size of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs and left the second largest crater ever recorded was somewhere in the ballpark of 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the colony. I found an estimate that claims that same asteroid, the Chicxulub Asteroid, was traveling at 20km/s, but we'll hold on to that for a second. The colony was located at Lagrange Point 4, which is directly in the Moon's orbit. Knowing that means we know how far it traveled to Earth and this video gives us a timeline of 5-6 days for the colony to hit Earth. With my noodle I can at least guess that that means the colony was traveling at around 1km/s. I just googled the formula for momentum and luckily for me it's a simple multiplication, p=mv. So, if you assume that's all you need to know to calculate crater size (which I sincerely doubt it is considering diameter isn't in that equation) then we're almost there. We would take that 20km/s, convert into m/s at 20,000m/s, then multiply it by the mass I found for Chicxulub at 2,000,000,000,000,000 kgs, and we have a number of 40,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg·m/s for our momentum of the asteroid that struck Earth and killed the dinosaurs and left only a ~180km crater. We would then multiply our momentum (p) by 2.777777777 to equalize out the sizes and now we can solve for m in our colony problem. So, 40,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg·m/s (2.777777777) = m·1000m/s is our problem and it gives us 111,111,110,000,000,000,000 kg. That means the colony would be ~3 times that number.
Ummm... that can't be correct, like at all, but I'm honestly pretty confident that the crater size they gave is just outright nonsense as a third of a colony traveling at that speed would never create a crater THAT big. I already kinda knew that, but it's fun to fuck around with numbers sometimes. For reference they claimed the colony drop had an equivalent TNT tonnage of 60,000, but the wiki page says the Chicxulub asteroid created an equivalent of 72,000,000 tonnes of TNT. I found some estimates online that have people placing the mass of an O'Niel Cylinder at much closer to a few billion kilograms and I would put much more faith in those estimates than any of this nonsense I just put together.
tl;dr The numbers Gundam gives for this stuff is just obviously a bit wrong and dated. I would imagine people taking stabs at what an O'Niel Cylinder actually weighed would be much more accurate than actually using Gundam's metrics, especially through the lens of my nonexistent math skills. It probably weighed a few billion kilograms.

You are correct, the makers of this, the original Gundam timeline, used Gerard O'Neill's O'Neill Cylinders as the space colonies in this setting.
Some other comments have discussed how much one colony might weigh, I am not an expert. Yes it is hollow, unlike an asteroid, but even so I imagine it must weigh millions of tons.

I'm pretty sure the Earth Federation DID nuke Zeon's colonies back, or at least some of them. The main Zeon space colonies were safe because they were so far away on the other side of the sun, and Zeon had space superiorty through most of the war. When they lost their main defensive bulwark between their population centers and the earth fleet, they surrendered immediately.
