Cutting out the important part of Mewtwo's backstory was definitely a blow to the overall story. Still, the movie was thematically an incredible experience for me at the time. Especially for the fact that it's actually Pokemon. So cute monsters fight a bit with each other... At it's core, it was really about existence and what it means or could mean. I was absolutely fascinated.

Definitely true, I have a lot of nostalgia for this movie and it's honestly one of my favorite one's despite the changes. If you enjoyed the English though definitely check out the Japanese ver

@@arikendoIt seems america went hardcore for the dub version of Pokemon: the first movie.

I like how the western audience grasped onto the two parts of the film that were true to the original like the Mewtwo quote you mentioned but also Meowth’s quote
“We do have a lot in common, the same earth, the same air, the same sky. Maybe if we start looking at what’s the same instead of what’s different, well who knows.”
As a kid I never knew about the English cut scene or the Japanese version but I somehow came to the conclusion that Mewtwo wasn’t a bad guy but just wanted answers and I really sympathized him. Had a nice “I was right moment” when I discovered the cut scene.

As a kid, when I watched this movie, something about the struggle between the Pokémon I feel I took a different message than from the watered down 4kids adaptation. I have never watched the original production, in my heart and mind I took from the original message due to music, the art. It was there even though the words were not.

Mewtwo has always been one of my favorite characters, and I hate how his origin was cut in the Dub. He deserves the world and best friends. If I was in the Pokémon world, I would be the first one to catch and befriend hin.

As much as I love Mewtwo to this day being a Gen 1 veteran, as a kid, I always wondered why they made the original movie so dang DARK. I didn't know the Japanese version had that many differences. At least the 3D remake fixed most of the errors.

As an american myself the line "there needs to be a distinct difference between good and evil characters" and the mentality that came with was in fact one of the two very reasons why I as a kid hated and despised American media, the other was because I like serialized storytelling and couldn't for the life of me find any serialized tv shows that weren't anime as a kid in the 90s and 2000s
So 7 year old me clung to shonen anime and refused to give american media a chance unless someone would tell me that it was serialized or nuanced....which I as a 7 year old kid with very very poor communication skills could not articulate at all. Leading to alot of bullying because I liked anime in the 2000s while living in the south.

1:45 I always knew Mewtwo had something to do with Erik's character. As much as Mewtwo didn't suffer because of his appearance as Erik did, their paralels of being sympathetic characters that learn how to be better while struggling with their existence in the world are strong. I think both Mewtwo and Erik would be best friends! And, ironically, many "Phantom of the Opera" adaptations turn Erik into an evil villain, despite his original character in the 1910 novel being a tragic anti-hero who only wanted to be loved. Both Erik and Mewtwo only needed love and compassion to fit in and feel complete, after all, no matter how Erik looks or how Mewtwo was born, they are both living beings and their lifes are worthy 🥺❤️

I feel like the only things that the English Dub does better than the original is the incredible OST and Mewtwo and Meowth's speeches, with Mewtwo's speech being my favorite speech of all time.

Extremely unpopular opinion amongst anime/manga fans: Marvel actually does have some incredible villains that are nuanced and don't just do evil shit to be evil.

Pokemon tackling, biting, scratching, punching and kicking each other is bad
in a universe where people readily have them battle by not just doing that but also by poisoning, gassing, burning alive, blasting them with high pressured water, freezing them, electrocution them, throwing them around like rag dolls, and lets not forget the ability known as self-destruct.
did these morons even know anything about the franchise when they dumbed it all down?
the original Japanese battle between the originals and clones wasn't a friendly sporting match.
They were fighting to the death to validate their own existence. The winner would kill the loser to prove their lives had value.

Dude, look at this: I'm from Brazil. Little known fact: we have a pretty large population and in the 90s and 00s, we were the 5th most populous country (and market) on the planet. The reason I'm telling you this is because nobody ever gives a shit about us: our version of Pokémon: The Movie is the American version WITH THE JAPANESE STORY dubbed. Yeah, we had a Mewtwo interested in his origin, purpose, etc., without the Austrian painter vibes, but also without the origin scene and the whole "clone my daughter" thing. I've never seen that scene or heard of it in my entire life. That's disgusting. Now I'm wondering how this movie was distributed to the European and Latin markets

Did the other Dubs like the Italian, French, German or Spanish also butchered Mewtwo's character?

  • @ZachariahMicallef

    Honest question:
I have watched nothing pokemon. Played none of the games.
Would I understand what's happening if I just chucked this movie on? It seems pretty good.

    • @Amins88
      @Amins88 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Probably? As long as you have basic understanding of who the characters are and what Pokemon is. I'm pretty sure they explain most of the basics throughout the movie for the parents that get dragged to the movie for their kids.
And if this video is to be believed, the Japanese version would probably be even more suited for this, having more value outside of the franchise itself.

There were A LOT of edits and censorship of the series in America for varying reasons. Mostly due to current events, also due to overly sensitive localization.

Thinking back to the remake, Netflix's Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, the Japanese cut of the film seemed to translate to the English Dub. Maybe take a look into that.
The ten minute beginning is still cut, but I think the remake was better than the original English Dub. Kind of.

Great video, but there's one thing wrong you said. You said 4Kids removed Mewtwo's original from the movie. That's not entirely accurate as the Japanese theatrical release of the film didn't feature Mewtwo's origin either, it started in the same place the 4Kids dub did. However, in all subsequent releases of the film in Japan, like the home video release for example, Mewtwo's origin was added to the beginning and the theatrical release was never released again and is hard to find now. So, the Japanese have a version of this movie that doesn't feature Mewtwo's origin either, and they still loved the movie as all of the themes of the film were intact. So, even though 4Kids didn't have it in the movie and regulated it as a bonus feature on the DVD for Mewtwo Returns, there is precedent for it not being in the movie originally. I'm not excusing the 4Kids dub for doing this, but considering how badly they fucked up the themes and characterization in this movie, excluding the origin is the least of the dub's problems.

What would've happened if us, fans time traveled to 1999 and beatened up the localizers? While forcing them to keep everything intact from the Japanese original. As revenge for ruining the movie of our childhoods? And how'd historical events have played out once our plans have succeeded? And how'd our younger-selves have thought about the movie?
