    I resent 4kids. The goofy censorship really gave One Piece a bad reputation. I remember reading One Piece at school and another kid saw Gear 4 Luffy and said “WOW! When did the series decide to grow a pair of balls!?”

      yep they made the series more goofy than it otherwise could have been, the impression it left on me. A rich guy in a suit has over powered kicks aka Sanji, the stretchy guy is also quite over powered and very goofy aka Luffy, and seems to have a dream. Arlong pirates are very well written for a kids show, Buggy seems like a lot of fun. the show seemed very goofy with key moments thats what 4kids left. how a show is presented can greatly effect how it is perceived. a show can either be bad or good all depending on what is presented. when I actually got back into OP after 4kids made it goofy, I got back into it in 2014, and realized wow it is a very good show that was never given proper moment to shine as bright as it could have.

      I actually thought that it was far too goofy and outright stupid when I saw it on 4kids. I'd stopped watching after 3 episodes, and went to Yugio. Later Death Note, Bleach, and Naruto.
      I'm only getting into it now due to some friends raving about the politics and Haki in One Piece. I have been binge watching it subbed since the Corona virus. From water 7 arch the series blew up to me.

    one piece already had it more difficult to become more popular in the west due to the art style, which makes people easily dismiss it as "some kiddy anime" compared to naruto and bleach which looked all "cool and edgy"
    the 4kids dub is just the nail in the coffin that reinforced people to really dismiss it as an anime for kids for with all the horrible censorship

      A lot of fans anime don't takes OP serious because of 4kids impression, a lot of people won't give it a chance because it didn't get a good impression like Naruto or Bleach. Back then you knew the show had potential but 4kids made it goofy beyond belief. the impression it leaves is a very goofy show with a rich guy in a suit with over powered kicks aka Sanji. When you put it into proper context. 4kids = super goofy, hiding great potential moments. OP in context = a great series that was never given proper spot in the sun to shine.

    I have a special kind of hatred for 4kids... One Piece is my Favorite Anime/Manga, and because of 4Kids, I almost never even watched/read it... I watched part of one episode on CN, and it was so awful that I stopped watching and had a dislike for the show. Thankfully a good friend of mine brought over some subbed episodes on a burned DVD and we marathoned the first 10 in one night, and thus my fandom was born.

    • @Macandbloo11
      @Macandbloo11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason their dubs had that censorship is because their dubs aired on network television during Saturday mornings, and the shows they aired on channels like Fox and the WB had to go through a filter called Broadcast Standards and Practices. Which dictates what is and isn't allowed to be displayed on TV. When 4Kids has episodes delivered to them, before working on any of them, they have to present the Japanese version of the episode to BSAP for review, and they would get back notes telling them what elements in the episode has to cut out or censored.

      And... now Oda outlasted them all and has sold more manga than any other title. Kinda invalidates most “4kids ruined One Piece!” arguments. Longest running shonen, most manga sold by so so much, and still growing exponentially in popularity. The trend that really proves this for the western audience is look at how many English-speaking TH-cam channels cover +75% only One Piece. And many with millions of views for a chapter discussion.

    • @gilbertoflores7397
      @gilbertoflores7397 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jeremyknight9980 nope. I doubt it. The appeal of dragon ball is the fights, one piece is pretty lack luster in that department compared to dragon ball, Naruto, bleach, and all the shows that blew up in the states. One piece is a slow burn series that will just never appeal the the larger US audience due to how much time you need to commit to it.

    • @gregorypan
      @gregorypan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@gilbertoflores7397 While this is partially true, I think you're only thinking about the 1-12 age demographic. One Piece never got a chance to shine in America so we'll never know, but imo it doesn't take very long to get into One Piece, nor does it take a long time to start getting payoffs for the million plot points Oda introduces. I believe the appeal of One Piece lies in the fact that Oda is amazing at writing both short-term stories and long-term plots at the same time. Nobody would read One Piece if we had to wait 500 chapters each time to get a resolution.
      I'd also argue that your underselling One Piece fights. I'd agree that One Piece fights are probably the weakest part of One Piece, but in comparison to the other series you mentioned the fights are almost just as good, if not better in some cases. I haven't seen Bleach, but I do think Naruto fights are slightly better. I do not think DBZ fights are even remotely as interesting or even epic as One Piece fights. The reason DBZ is popular is because young people love power scaling, and that's basically DBZ in a nutshell.
      But in general I wouldn't generalize the elements of popularity so hard, nor the characteristics of an audience. If you think that American youths are more prone to enjoying fights than Japanese, Spanish, or German youths, than maybe you're right. But the series pretty much blew up everywhere except for English speaking countries, yet still remains the best-selling manga of all time, so to me your logic kinda falls through. Just my take, though.

    • @Macandbloo11
      @Macandbloo11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@jeremyknight9980 Funimation wanted One Piece, yes. But 4Kids didn't beat them to it, Toei just simply gave it to them over Funimation because of the massive success 4Kids was getting from Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh as well as bringing in many audiences into the franchises, and they wanted One Piece to gain that same popularity in the West. And 4Kids only got One Piece through a package deal that advertised it as one of the most popular kids franchises in Japan, which got 4Kids into agreeing with the package deal until they started getting episodes that showed it was too violent and inappropriate for them, and they couldn't screen test One Piece before purchasing the licensing since they didn't have proper checks and balances established at the time that would allow them to screen anime before purchasing the licensing.

      AFAIK, he was made aware thanks to masters videotapes with One Piece episodes made by 4Kids sent to TOEI HQ in Japan by mexican TV producer Televisa as per TOEI request (because that HQ mistakenly thought it was Televisa who was doing the butchering and mowing destruction of One Piece in Latin America), since the TOEI subsidiary located in Los Angeles, managed by Kenji Ebato, never informed to the HQ about the content of the deal between that subsidiary and 4Kids.
      Oda asked the videotapes to be seen by him alongside with TOEI directives. When Oda saw that wasn't a minor latin american issue (that was serious enough nonetheless, by the way), but the biggest/critical one also involving USA (and UK, Australia and every english speaking country in the world, if what's said in this video is true, which made the problem practically global), he threatened to break the agreement between him and TOEI regarding One Piece if no solution was provided immediately and if a new contract wasn't made where Oda established that nothing about One Piece could be marketed or produced by TOEI without his express, written consent.

    Hey just to expand on the "Zolo" part, I'm french and started reading One Piece in ... 2007 iirc, at the time some character's names had been sort of translated, like usopp who was called "Pipo" (sort of slang word for lying in french), and Sanji was "Sandi". But around volume 60 or something, the Editor of the manga in France (Glenat) decided to change the translation, calling Usopp Usopp and Sanji Sanji (among many many other mistranlations) and re-edited EVERY volume up until that point. I don't see why they couldn't do that in the US (speaking for the books and not the dubs ofc (much more work to re-dub everything), it's better for everyone, the new readers, the readers that caught up with the manga and know the real names, and also for the editor who can expect to sell everything again to some fans.

    They cut things like Nami stabbing her Tatoo, not entirely, but the scene is not as long as it is in the original.

    This is kind of a soft spot for me, as an Italian viewer.
    Not only the company that owns the Italian dub is horrendously scummy (they own both OP and Naruto, OP is stuck in Fishaman Island and Naruto never ended, still in the middle of the War Arc), but 4kids reached even over here (after all, most adapters would use english texts as their base, 4kids even worked here if I remember correctly).
    The story is like the original, it was not changed like the 4kids version and it hit the right demografic for the most part, but they decided to make a few ENORMOUS changes (they were probably obbligated from one of the higher ups):
    - Luffy... in Italy he is "Monkey D Luffy, known as *RUBBER* "... yep that's his name, Rubber. Every time they read his bounty poster that exact phrase is uttered
    - How about the infamous Devil Fruits? The fruits that make a faustian pact with its eater, giving them a particular power in exchange for their swimming abilities... they are called "Sea Fruits", which in Italian is the same noun used to talk about Sea food. I can clearly feel the sense of danger.
    - There are other changes which make the story much more confused that it needs to be, like Sanji's dream being to find the All blue, or as it is called here "Grande Blu" (literally traslated in "Big Blue", but this is not the problem), which is the same name given to the Grand Line, so Sanji literally wants to find the Grand Line... ok
    When someone more capable took the role to adapt the series it was already too late and these problems needed to stay for continuity's sake.
    With the films they started taking more liberties, literally fixing the series (seeing as what the movies depict is much further the point the anime adaptation reached here, so they can go on and talk as if they were talking to the dedicated fans who are well aware of the adaptation problems):
    Luffy is Luffy once more, Devil Fruits came back and they even changed more stuff by translating the Admiral names in their real meaning, making it more clear how they are not their real names and just titles (example: Kizaru in Stampede is called "Scimmia Gialla" , aka "Yellow Monkey")
    It has gotten better, but no one has any hope for the anime adaptation anymore

      @@lucabertani225 si giusto, infatti ho scritto come non hanno cambiato aspetti della storia in modo particolare come la 4kids. COmunque, la roba dei frutti del mare è abbastanza scandalosa, molto peggio di Luffy e Rubber.
      Per Rubber alla fine si parla di un nome, sticazzi, magari poteva anche servire per far allineare il labiale; frutti del mare ha diverse implicazioni:
      1) dà l'idea che siano collegati al mare, data la preposizioni si suppone ne sia l'origine, di sicuro non dà l'idea di un patto faustiano che impedisce di nuotare e anzi aumenta il collegamento con l'acqua
      2) parlando di origine, un nome del genere ha fatto a pensare a me e a tanti altri che questi frutti avessero degli alberi marini o vaccate del genere solo perchè con hanno voluto usare la denominazione "del DIAVOLO", probabilmente per la 4kids con le sue spinte senza riferimenti religiosi
      ----
      For non-italians, Luca pointed out how the italian version did not cerson stuff with only really minor exception (which is true, the story is mainly faithful) and how the "Sea Fruits" (Frutti del mare in italian) change is minor when compared with the "Rubber" change, and here i disagree:
      the Sea Fruits nomination actually implicates some kind of relation between the 2, and due to the words used it kind of implies that the Sea is actually its origin, making hundreds of children think that these fruits actually came from some sort of underwater tree; most certainly it does not give any idea to the spectator that this object actually makes its eater incapable of swimming

    Well, I'm from Italy and yes, the anime was my first exposure to the series. It was treated extremely well, for the most part, especially when it came to the dub, getting a lot of the heavy hitters from the anime dubbing community from my country - like for example Nami had the same VA as Bulma and Sakura, Chopper had the same VA as Kid Goku and Kid Gohan, and many others. Hell, they even kept the same laughs - I still remember Moria's laugh from the Italian dub, it was so good. The most censorship we had was the same we had on DragonBall, which was; instead of saying "I'm going to kill you" they said "I'm going to destroy you" and the likes; so while the visuals were never changed, some names were. The main thing was: Italy used to be, much more than it is now, a heavy Catholic country, so Devil Fruits became "Sea Fruits" instead. The most remarkable thing though was the name of Luffy; yes, at the beginning of the dub, he was called Rubber. Yeah, the English name Rubber on the Italian show instead of Luffy. Later, I think after Enies Lobby, the dub completely embraced Luffy as its name - well, here they call it Rufy - using the Japanese phonetics - but still. I think with Film Gold and Stampede they actually finally use Luffy.
    However, I do agree. If it wasn't for that embarrassing dub, I have no doubt OnePiece would be a huge deal in the English spoken countries. But now that the whole series is available on digital - in both Anime and Manga form - I think we're seeing it make a comeback.
    What will make it or break it though is without a doubt going to be the Netflix show at this point. If that is done well - and since Netflix is naturally targeted at OnePiece's core demographic - that could mean a resurgence in the West. If.

    I remember watching the 4Kids dub on Cartoon Network also in Australia. I liked the theme song and I liked the pirate theme but even then I felt like something was off with the characters and I switched off.
    I do recall that the funimation dub did reach Australia later and seeing a few episodes of Skypea arc but at that point I was completely lost how did they get there and what are they doing?
    And finally thanks to the internet and my adult nostalgia I randomly searched One Piece and watching the original dub and never looked back, moved into the manga as well....and I’m in my 30s now...

    I think I’m one of the few people who fell in love with one pice via the 4kids dub.
    I thought 4kidz Sanji and his lollipop was badass and exclusively ate lolipops like smoking cigarettes ( a fact I realized later), DONT COME FOR ME.
    I was lucky b/c the first episode I ever watched was from the Drum Island arc where Luffy climbs to Dr. Kureha’s. I was so invested in how he got there and what happened next that, 9 y old me spent hours trying to find the 4kids episodes online. When all I could find was the “obviously” lower quality subbed episodes( how naive I was). I resigned myself to settling for those until I found the English ones. 16 years later I still haven’t found them and I couldn’t be happier.
    I honestly think One Piece boosted my reading level b/c I had to get faster at reading subtitles so I didn’t have to pause the show every other second.

    Ngl, I was hesitant to start One Piece again in 2013 because of the extremely childish nature of the 4kids dub. My cousin was watching it in Japanese and convinced me to start it. Was the first time I started to seriously watch anime and the first time I watched anime subbed.

    I remember watching the 4Kids dub of One Piece (CN in New Zealand)...it was something that came on tv that I decided to give a go because anime. One of the few episodes I watched was the episode where Shanks saved Luffy and sacrifices his arm in the process. I loved that bit fondly, it had heart and gave Luffy a reason to respect Shanks and his Straw Hat so much. The other episodes I remember watching were from the Albastas arc. Overall though, I never got into following the series at that time because the 4Kids dub made it feel like such a kid show and the dubbing itself was weak (relative to Ghost in the Shell SAC, NGE, Dragon Ball Z). And then I got into One Piece in 2008 after experiencing Bleach and Naruto for a few years. I devoured the series with the passion of a thousand burning suns consuming the 343 episodes that were out in 10 days and taking a further 2 days to watch all the movies released and catch up to the latest manga chapter (chapter 488). It was glorious, emotional and is one of the most beloved series I have read/watched/experienced. It was also eye-opening in how bad and tragic the 4Kids dub of One Piece was. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that the 4Kids dub of One Piece really did ruin One Piece to the western audience. If only there were a devil fruit that had the ability to go back in time to rewrite it...

    Wouldn’t have made a difference to me. When it comes to anime, UK is in the stone age. They had a pretty cool channel back in the early 2000s called CNX which was later called Toonami, which had a lot of anime. But they quickly pulled the plug on that and never spoke about it again. To this day, there’s no anime channels on tv, and the only way to watch anime is to stream it using sites like Crunchyroll or Funimation, which is a crying shame as it chokes out any new generation from growing up with anime here in the UK.

It’s a pretty cool entry point for anime, like Dragon Ball Super and Pokemon Sun and Moon, but it’s mostly filled with pretty weird CG shows during the day and even late at night, like ALVINNN and the Chipmunks or Transformers Cyberverse. Well gotta take the good with the bad, I suppose. I had to get through pretty weird shit like Cubix or Angela Anaconda just to get to DBZ, lol! It’s night just now and finished airing, so I’ll take a proper look at it and make a good judgement on it once it starts back up again in the morning.

    Fun fact: a similar thing happened with One Piece in Italy.
    I used to hate one piece as a kid, and loved naruto much much more,, i would turn off the TV when one piece was airing and barely bothered with it, and yet around 22 yo i decided to sit the fuck down and watch the subbed one piece from the beginning and Oh My God it blew me away.
    One Piece is much MUCH more mature than what people give it credit for, and even tho i dont wanna shit on the Shonens of my adolescence (Naruto and KHR mostly) watching One Piece from the start was incredible and even now i suggest to fearful 30 yo friends to give one piece a shot.
    It's not nearly as edgy, flashy or cool for a teenager as Naruto or hell even DBZ, but has many more resonant themes, amazing characters, an incredibly detailed world and concrete and relatable stories. A coup d'Etat achieved by making the people hate the monarchy by subtile meanings, a travel to a completely different civilization that worships a powerful figure like a God, a government that demolishes an island and chases a little kid to be sure no one discovers how they got to power, a deep root of racism, discrimination and slavery that leads to the rebellion of a suppressed minority, how are those themes for kids exactly?!?

    i just finished it, actually. all censorship aside, i actually liked their voice acting and their voices are definitely worth imitating. if i could do all of them i would but i can't, especially luffy's. but nevertheless i still liked the way the voices of the strawhats and the villans were portrayed. my favorite villan from this dub would have to be crocodile, but as for the strawhats, that's a pretty tough decision. you've got sanji and his brooklyn accent which in my opinion kinda fits, actually, then there's usopp's voice which is pretty good, next we have luffy's voice. believe me if i were still younger than i actually am i probably would be able to imitate it, but puberty's a thing so what can you do? i mean i might be able to try and replicate his funimation voice but still. next up is nami. all i can say is Kerry Williams did this one justice. after that we've got chopper. the decision to alternate voices between his regular and monster forms was actually a good idea. robin's "texas" accent may have fitted the character for now but i wonder how her voice actress would have delivered her lines later on in the series had 4kids still dubbed one piece(fun fact: Did you know she also did the voice of ash when 4kids had pokemon?) as for zolo, well Marc Driason was a perfect match. i'll have to get used to Chris Sabat now that i'm where funimation started at. it's a shame they didn't bring this cast back when funimation took over. that's all i can say. but the rap song? the rap song was actually pretty fun to sing along to.

    One was aired on Toonami and kept many of the edits 4Kids made for continuity, like Zolo and non-smoking Sanji. (I believe this went up to the end of Thriller Bark before Toonami cancelled it.)
    The other, exclusive to their DVD releases, was as faithful to the source as it could possibly be, and retains every cigarette, cleavage shot, blood spatter, and (most importantly) the R in Zoro!

    -One pice in netflix
    -One piece in live action

    And in the latinoamerica parts as mexico yous little amount of persons watched the censured version so one piece dosnt have the titile of a funny and not serious our god anime.
    It yous not that popular.
    But latetly more spanish youtubers are makin one piece content what is making more people look one piece.
    With covid 19 a lot of people are in ther homes and with all of these youtubers talking amazing things of one piece and creating polemics are making them give it a tried tho the series now that they have nothing to do and nothing to loss.
