    Summary
    Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2011-2012 Kia Sportage vehicles. The engine oil pan may leak and, if not addressed, the loss of oil may result in engine damage.
    Consequence
    A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Solution
    Kia has notified owners, and dealers will replace the oil pressure switch with an improved one, free of charge. In addition, dealers will inspect the oil pan for any oil leaks, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began July 3, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC174.

    I feel like I have to comment again on your oil pressure sensor switch video...because you were so informative and your video showed so much of the part that needed to be removed , I was able to gather all tools necessary and be ready to do the job as quickly and as effective as possible ..it took me 1 hr and 15 minutes and it was not easy but not hard either .. your video is by far the smartest way to do this part .. I hope more people see it before moving on to the videos of people removing half the engine just about to do this part... again I appreciate you taking the time to post this ... if I lived near you ..I would take you out for beer sir, keep up what you do. Just minutes ago, I did this on my 2016 Kia soul plus (2.0 GDI engine). It was quite a bit easier to access on the 2.0, as the sensor was installed literally right above the oil filter, with no brace or anything in the way use the exact same part from Duralast (purchased at a local auto zone for $10.99) did not need extensions for the socket wrench because of the easier placement. Only complication was that the shaft on the new part that the plug locks was about 1.5mm longer than the stock sensor, and the lock did not want to engage. With some careful filing, I reduced the length of the shaft enough for the plug to catch.
    I have not worked on the Kia much myself, so I was very cautious, even with that, and not knowing some of the clips and such to remove the splash guard - I was done in about 60 minutes (that includes installing it, determining the plug, didn’t fit, altering the part, dry fitting the plug, reinstalling it, getting engine to temp, putting it back together, and test drive.
    I experienced the same - having oil passing through the stock sensor… It appears that there may be a recall from Kia on some of the larger engines for this, so I guess it’s not really a surprise. When I removed the splash guard there was oil on the inside that was likely residual from a slow leak through the sensor and plug.
    Thanks for the detailed video. Come and help me know what to expect. Yours was one of the few I found it didn’t recommend emptying the oil pan in order to make the switch that gave me confidence. I wasn’t going to get splashed in the face with oil the second I removed the original!

(2.0) I have no oil leaks, and it doesn't smoke, I've changed the pvc value, oil and filter and it still eats the oil bad! I'm gonna use 5w-30 oil this time around hopefully this switch last longer than the last one! My take away from owning my first Kia is to definitely not to buy another one!

    hi my brother just called saying his 2013 Kia Optima oil light started coming on at idle after he let some shop did his oil change. I just spent an half hour looking into things. 1) he says Kia had the car for 5 hours previously and the said the car checked out, I said BS the only way to check it is to drop the oil pan pull the bearing caps off and mic the engine, and even if you did all what about the main bearings.
    2) oil pressure switch may be bad, you really need to put a oil gauge on the car and check the pressure (or just change the pressure switch since its so cheap)
    3) oil viscosity, the 2013 calls for 5w-20 to 5w-30 oil that is very thin oil especially for south TX, I recommend running at least 10W-30 oil at a minimum if your car has high mileage, HTHs

    Any oil pressure sensor (switch) should NOT have oil in the electrical connector area. That indicates it is failing (leaking). Can cause numerous problems with engine running (including oil blowing out gradually). Similar issue is when the vacuum shift actuator on a transmission is leaking - only in that case the trans fluid blowing by the vacuum diaphram is consumed by the engine instead of just blowing overboard.

    • @stevedonovan9739
      @stevedonovan9739 ปีที่แล้ว

      so replacing would stop the leak?

    • @billlogsdon3879
      @billlogsdon3879 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevedonovan9739 The one on my Kia had a busted diaphram... so yes, replacing that one stopped the leak in that car. On my HHR, it was causing other engine run issues, replacing that one caused the engine to run smoothly, and it stopped consuming oil - Kia was leaking, HHR was running rough. Look at the connector to yours, is it saturated with oil? If yes, then it is definitely leaking.

    Excellent info. Quick advice. NEVER use an impact tool to remove a sensor. You run the risk of damaging the threads in the engine and then you'll really be in trouble. Ask me how I know. Kinda glad you weren't able to remove it with the impact gun you had there. 😬And no, an Oil Pressure Switch/Sender should never have oil coming out of it and sipping into the connector. That will cause electrical short, thus, giving an erratic reading. Good video, though. 👍

    My oil pressure light began flickering on when vehicle came to a stop and engine was idling (with about 134,000 km mileage). The light then began to stay on after I start the car, and remains on for 15 seconds to a minute, so I'm sure it's getting worse, and I'm guessing this is probably also one of the reasons it is losing oil. I will have it fixed and check to see if the light stays off as you say. Thanks for posting this vid.

      Same - the sensor functions in most cars as a on (working) or off (switch or pump fail) indicator... an intermittent functioning (failing) one will cause all kinds of issues, as the cars computer trys to compensate for the flakey signals such as rough idle, etc. Had one starting to go on my daughter's Kia Forte, replaced it, car now has the original pep restored, and is no longer gradually losing oil (it was blowing out the failing switch)... hope this helps...

    My sorento is blowing oil out everywhere under my car because of that sensor! I guess I have to go tackle this job myself because it's over a month before I can get my car in the shop! I can't wait any longer my engine will blow because of a part that cost $11.65....unbelievable..

    So what I'm seeing is that you DON'T have to drain the oil first before changing the sensor.

      Sorry, I did not replace the oil pressure switch myself, but the TH-cam video should tell you if you must first drain the oil.

    The Kia stinger production has been canceled, plus the Kia Stinger twin turbo sucks. It's not faster then a v6 dodge charger. All show & NO GOv

    No, those switches aren't supposed to leak. They're supposed to be sealed. If they do leak, they are bad.

    It’s not supposed to have oil in it. The seal in it is bad that’s why it don’t work.
