Can the oil pan be removed without removing or lifting engine? In other words, if the car is on jacks, is there direct access ot the oil pan or is it obstructed by other parts, or beams, etc?

Working on one in our shop now. Came in as no crank no start. After testing starting system, discovered the starter was toast. Replaced starter. Then attempted to start emgine and new starter labored extremely hard. So placed a wrench on crank and attempted to rotate engine manually. Engine will not turn. Now trying to remove oil pan and its absolutely glued on. Cannot get it to seperate from block without bending pan. Ugghhhh

It's easy at that. Just like he is saying. Bullshit. I just sold that junk 13 Sorento with a bad head. Thats after I replaced number 1 rod connecting rod bearings. It's not worth repairing it. 7 thousand from the dealer. 3 thousand from a company that sell rebuilt engines. And 2 thousand in just parts. Just to do it yourself. Word of the wise never buy newer junk cars.

Im going to guess you were sarcastic. But 12 to 17 black bolts. 2 silver bolts holding the A/C compressor to the block and oil pan.

If it's the 3.5 transaxle version. Junk to work on. Now if it's the older 3.5 longitude one. Oh buddy. Soooo much room for activities on it. I just unbolt a few parts. Drop my front axle. To drop the oil pan.

Riiight. Put a screwdriver and pry it off. How about have the engine in the car. And have it only on a jackstand and a jack? And no on a engine hoist. I want to see that. Because that's what I'm doing. It's not easy. When you have tried doing that. Then say it's "easy"

Too Right! Lack off clearance of D4EA Engine on 2008 Kia Carens / Rondo with the subframe means the Kia Hyundai Workshop Manual has the 'easy' method - take the engine out! You can do it with engine in place, just, but NOT EASY. You can squeeze it out with a jack supporting the engine and the RHS engine mount disconnected. But finding a good, safe jacking point that is not in the way of sump is hard. You need vertical movement and lateral on the engine, but you aren't going to get much! But getting the sump back in with sealant on it is very hard without ruining your neat laid line of sealant! How may times I scratched the mating surface too. What a pain this job is! All around the this model there are examples where Kia could have made the job possible without disassembly of half the car, but it just makes me believe their cars were designed to be thrown away after 10 years.

@alanbates3944 Exactly!! And my 13 sorento didn't hit that year mark. December of 2013 is when I got it. Around September of 2023 rod bearing gave out. And from that it has a nasty tap tap noise around 3 thousand revs. Everyone says the valve has dropped or something. But the dealership wants me to send around 7 thousand for a remanufactored engine. New internals but used blocked. Not worth it. Not worth getting a full remanufactered or used engine at this point. My 2004 has no problems. Almost 300 thousand miles. Second clutch. Just normal maintenance needed.

@@kitfox1016 Good to hear your 2004 Sorento? is still going, I bet it has taken some dedication to keep it running well if you do your own mechanics? I bought my Carens 2 years ago but find previous mechanic(s) have over-tightened a lot of things (Oil Filter, front suspension lower arm bolts, Rear caliper bolts, Idler pulley bolts at 2 x recommended torque) making seized bolts a real problem. But also Kia engineers' choice on metals is sometimes bad, as if they never heard of electrolytic corrosion! Aluminium Oil Pan (Sump) castings are quite brittle and fracture easily. Wish mine had the steel pan that came on later cars. I think rust will kill my Carens soon. I have a BMW E36 which is 15 years older with less rust! But then Hyundai and Kia started economising on the cars build quality, so shame you have rod bearing issue but I am not surprised. Laughable the price of 7 thousand dealership price on 2013 engine. Used replacement engine of £600 - £900 (UK Pounds) might be worth it but you need some history on what you are buying, or luck...

@alanbates3944 Not much really. Regular maintenance for it. My step dad and mom bought it with 24 thousand miles on it. It needs its regularly maintenance now. Oil change, spark plugs and fluids changed. Nothing more needed. But it turns out that it has a 3.5 Mitsubishi engine. Everything else is Hyundai/kia. I don't have issues with. It's just more reliable. I drove it 14 hours from north California to Los Angeles and back. Only problem with it now is mpg is really bad, that needs to be looked at and the float in the tank is bad.

@@kitfox1016 Good to hear. Mine just needed a fair bit of work to correct previous jobs that were not done properly, but it is reliable, so I'm doing the work. With regards to rust I imagine a drier climate helps rather than our UK rain..

Exactly. It's a crap show. When the car is on one jackstand and a pump jack. Can't even get good leverage to pull the pan off. I sold the whole car this week. I got the number 1 connecting rod bearing replaced. After it failed. Dealer said 7 thousand to get a rebuilt engine put in. Because something in the head gave way. And a valve could of dropped while it ran. I said nope. I'm happy with my 04 Sorento 3.5 v6. There are 2 people lined up since 2011. That want to buy. Because it's a reliable vehicle. Not for sale.
