  • In this video, I’ll walk you through step-by-step how to fix a low oil pressure message. The oil pressure switch has to be replaced to correct this problem. The truck shown in the video has a 5.0 L engine and is also four-wheel-drive. The eco-boost engine is a similar process.

    I like many others replaced the Oil Sensor Switch on my 2012 Ford F150 XLT 5.0 4x4 because at an idle I would get the dreaded LOW OIL PRESSURE warning. Didn't fix the issue! I stumbled across another video that talked about the THROTTLE BODY. Followed that advice by removing the Throttle Body and giving a major cleaning! Now, NO issues and after 3 months now, not 1 Low Pressure warning message. Try it, can't hurt, and will make a huge difference in the idle. Fixed my issue, hope it fixed yours!

      You must have had a low idle before. If the engine isn’t spinning fast enough, then neither is the oil pump. I’m glad you got it fixed!

      I had the oil light come on and my gauge was constantly dropping. I changed my sending unit on a Monday night, no problems so I thought it was fixed. As soon as I started my truck Tuesday morning, the light came on and the gauge dropped again. I remembered you talking about cleaning the throttle body so I tried it. So far I haven’t had a problem and it has been 1 week now! Thanks for the tip on the throttle body!

      Can you add a reference for the 3.7l 2wd? Your video was extremely thorough, thank you for the visual. I'm concerned from another video referencing aftermarket sending units being a no go, is this going to damage the engine to drive to a mechanic, as long as fluid level is good and oil is in good condition?

      Thank you! So frustrating! Several mechanics, even the better dealership in town have all been flummoxed. And I spent $450 getting the oil pressure switch replaced. No luck. If this is somewhat common, one would think the $200/hr guys at the dealership would have had a clue??

    I appreciate the video (especially the tip about the alternator). I almost considered coming in from the top on my 5.0, but decided to follow your video. I think this is probably the best way to do it. You have all the access you need once the alternator is out of the way. I was able to get it done in about 45 min - 1 hour start to finish.

    Excellent explanation! This is precisely the problem I'm having with my 2017 F-150. The warning comes up on the screen mostly when I've just stopped at a light. My truck is 2-wheel drive, so I hope it's not too difficult to replace the sensor. Thanks for posting a good video. My only wish is that you would do another video on a 2-wheel-drive F-150 with specific instructions on how and where to find the sensor. It's not at all obvious, but at least now I can look for a sensor that's cover with leaking oil.

    • @jackhfletcher
      @jackhfletcher  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since your truck is 2-wheel drive, you can get to the sensor on the bottom without having to remove the alternator, which will make the job a lot easier. If the issue persists, try cleaning the throttle body because a low idle can create this issue also. Good luck!

    Nice video bro 👍 👌 not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but keep in mind this can be a wiring problem also! I have a customer truck right now that just had an OEM sensor put in by another shop with no change in symptom. Did you use OEM sensor? If so, what was the part number? My brother in law has the low oil pressure light coming on also, when it does, engine automatically goes to idle, will not move until he switches the truck off, and restarts engine. Only happens when he comes to a stop, like a stop sign, or stop light. He had it to do that twice in one day. Next day worked just fine. I think he has a switch going bad.

    nice Video. I had mine changed and several months later the same thing happened again. I took it to my mechanic. He check the oil pressure mechanically and said when the light comes on that the oil pressure does not drop. It's an electrically problem. He said the part is not bad. I admit all of this sound fishy but I had this exact same problem with my 2002. I drove my 2002 for years and years with that message (actually no message the oil gauge would drop to zero) Never threw a code.And everything was fine. The point of my comment is this. The repair he made sometimes will fix the warning light and sometimes it reappears after a short while. I am looking for a way to silence the warning light. I know I know but it is extremely annoying and paying $300 to have a new oil sensor installed only to have this problem come back in a few months is not the answer either. If anyone knows how to silence the warning light please let me know.

  • @jorgesalas978
    @jorgesalas978 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    So you said if the low oil pressure light turns on either the switch is bad or there’s actually low pressure and the engine won’t run if that’s the case? Is it possible for the truck to actually have low oil pressure and be drivable

    • @straydawg13
      @straydawg13 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Keep in mind the wire from the sensor to the PCM can be broken or a connection can be loose. If the wire breaks (or is loose and making poor contact) the PCM will think there is no oil pressure. If there was intermittently -no- oil pressure, the truck at very least would be throwing codes for Variable valve timing, which requires oil pressure to function. Just my opinion I am not a ford tech.

    How about no light, but a random knock at hot idle that goes away with any amount of throttle blips. Sometimes not there, other times knock no knock.

      I've had the oil pressure sensor replaced twice now. It did not solve the problem entirely but it doesn't happen as often as it used to. It was never an real issue because the truck never actually died on me.
      I took my truck to get the speed sensor recall taken care off because my truck started acting up. As soon as I picked it up I noticed there was something really wrong this time around, all they did was to reprogram the computer.
      Now my truck takes a good minute to go into 1st gear and while it does or if I'm up-hill or at a light. The low oil pressure warning light comes on, the rom goes to zero and the truck dies on me.
      I had to turn the truck off and on. And keep my foot on the pedal.
      Do you think it could be the actual oil pressure pump ? I replaced the sensor this morning and it died on me going up my drive way. I did noticed it was a bit low on oil, like a quart.
      Sorry for the long message 😅

    Hey Jack, I see a lot of videos about this model and year having issues with the low pressure alarm coming on at an idle, but I had a different issue.
    I was 315 miles into a 350 mile trip, cruising in a traffic slowdown when I lost all oil pressure, couldn't accelerate. I pulled over and made sure I didn't spring a leak. Next I checked the fuse that goes to the oil pump and relay. Once I popped it out and back in again, the truck was able to start up and get me the rest of the way with no issue. Does this sound like it could still be the same sensor, or could I be looking at a computer issue? Thanks

      @jackhfletcher  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      More than likely, it’s an issue with the sensor. The odds of it being a computer issue are very low.

      Go to your local Ford dealership and buy a Motorcraft sensor from the parts department. I hate to say it, but the issue is probably because you used an aftermarket sensor. Install a Motorcraft sensor and you should be good. Think about it: the problem didn’t start until you did the job. I see issues all the time at the shop with aftermarket sensors, even with brands that are supposed to be reputable.

    Should oil be drained before doing this on my 2011 5.0? Or is it above where oil gathers?

    • @jackhfletcher
      @jackhfletcher  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No need to drain oil. You’ll loose some oil when you remove the switch, but draining the oil won’t make a difference.

    • @jackhfletcher
      @jackhfletcher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not. Most likely, that 2010 has the 5.4 engine and they are known for engine issues. If you can somehow prove that it’s an oil pressure switch and nothing more, then great. But otherwise I would pass.

      @jackhfletcher I found it, it was right behind the alternator as well about to head to orielys and change that part out hopefully this does the trick I've already changed out the throttle body and the purge valve thinking that was the issue fingers crossed

    • @jackhfletcher

      It’s most likely just a bad sensor which would mean it’s ok to drive because the oil pressure is good but the sensor is lying. But if the sensor is good and the oil pressure is truly 0 then it’s not safe because the engine will grenade itself after a very short time.

    2014 ford f150 4x4 echo boost. YOU DO NOT a have to take the alternator off so stop lying. You can do it from on top takes about 45-1Hr. All I had to do was take off my air filter box and water box off and take the wire off the alternator all from up top.

    • @jackhfletcher
      @jackhfletcher  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      At 3:26 in the video I specifically state that on the EcoBoost models, you can reach the switch from on top. Before calling me a liar, maybe you should rewatch the video to jog your memory as to what I actually said.

      @jackhfletcher  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      “Rip off” That’s a pretty bold accusation. In your previous comment, you mentioned that your truck is a 3.5 EcoBoost. The one in the video is a 5.0. Different engine, different procedure. The factory repair procedure states to remove the alternator on the 4x4 5.0 models and the book time labor is 2.2 hours according to Mitchell ProDemand. On the EcoBoost models, the procedure states to remove the switch from the top (no alternator removal). I’ve read a couple comment from others with the 5.0 who said they were able to remove the switch from on top after fighting it for a while. But the way I’m showing in the video is the correct way according to factory procedure.
