Here’s my story. I am the second owner. I have 93,000 miles on my 2015 kia optima. I had no idea about the class action suit against Kia nor did I know anything was wrong with their engines when I brought it. My car completely died on me two blocks away from my daughter’s school when I was in my way to pick them up. I had it towed to Kia and once they did an inspection, they said my engine was blown. Fortunately the previous owner had the ksds update put on the car in 2018. Kia approved my engine replacement with no problem. I didn’t even have to send in oil change receipts or anything. It took 2 weeks for the dealer to put in the new engine and I was given a loaner during that time. I’m extremely happy with how all of this turned out 😊

What location? I have a Kia soul 2015 68000 that I bought cash 5 weeks ago. Two weeks into owning car stopped at stop signs. Began to smoke. Leak coolant and oil. I made appointment and wait three weeks for it. I took car in day before appointment. And the service at Kia south in morrow ga we’re so terrible I cried for a hour in the car because I can tell they are swamp and gave me every reason why it might not be fulfill. I spent my entire savings on this car. And literally feel like I can’t handle the journey that I might have to go on after watching these videos after dropping this car off. If you could please share where you went. I’d appreciate it.

@@davijackson2594 I went to a Kia dealership in moline Illinois. The dealership sucks because all they care about is money. They don’t care about what you’re actually going through. When I said that Kia was great, I meant the Kia customer service (just google Kia customer service for the phone number). They’re the ones that approved the engine replacement for me. Unfortunately for you, the class action lawsuit only requires them to cover the engine only. If I were you I’d take your car to a place that offers long term financing like meineke or a dealership. That way you can have the work it needs done now and pay later. Or you can take it to a dealership and use it as a trade in. It would count as your down payment to purchase a new car. Yes you will have to then pay a car note moving forward but I’d rather have a reliable car. If you don’t have a lot of money to put into repairs then get rid of your Kia. I’ve already spent about 3,000 on mine in other repairs not even related to the engine. Hopefully this helps ☺️

To anyone who is denied the cheapest and fastest solution is to take them to small claims court and sue them for a new engine. The cost to file is under $50.00 in my state and the upper limit is $10,000 and you do it by filling out a form. You can represent yourself and should, but since they are a corporation they must be represented by an attorney. And because they aren't incorporated in my state and probably at least 45 other state in the US they will have to hire an outside attorney to represent them in court in your state. And odds are it is must cheaper and faster to cover your engine replacement. After all because of the recall they will lose the case and still have to pay for an outside attorney. Their tactic is to stall you with nonsense until they wear you out. I haven't done this with this company but I've done it with a number of major corporations over the years on major purchases of appliances. I have never lost simply because I was in the right as you would be.

Hi Carl, GREAT video. Thank you for continuing this crusade. I was once really glad to have a Kia but now I will state that I will never purchase another Kia or Hyundai again. I don't know who is advising Kia/Hyundai about denying claims, but they are giving bad advice. The ill will being generated is going to drive Kia & Hyundai out of business in the U.S. I really admired Kia/Hyundai when they established assembly plants in Georgia & Alabama. I was happy to see a lot of jobs for Americans in Georgia & Alabama. However, now? If all this really gets out into the mainstream news, Kia & Hyundai will become failed ventures in the U.S. and many jobs will be lost. Perhaps deservedly so. If you unwilling to recognize a glaring problem with your product and try to disavow your poor quality control, then you should not be allowed to sell your product in this country.
Keep up the great work Carl!

HEY MR. LEE aka the man with the best grammar on youtube! lol I aspire to write as well as you do MR. Lee. Haha but yes you're 100% right. @@StraightOuttaContent Good evening Carl! Thank you for the compliment but I really don't believe I write any better than the next person. I do try to pay attention to what grammar rules I can still remember from the 1960's. That's 50+ years ago but in my mind it is sometimes like yesterday. Bob Seger sang a song that states my feelings after all these years. The song is "Like A Rock," and it touches something deep inside me. Where did all the years go? Now how does that tie in with the problems with Kia/Hyundai? Just like the saying that "time was so much simpler then," the same holds true for automobiles. Engines were so much simpler then just like life was. To my knowledge, they didn't have the massive recalls we are seeing today. It seems that cars were built to last almost forever as long as you changed the oil and plugs every so often. I think quality became a serious problem when Detroit began building "junk" in the 1980's. It seems that cars were designed to become obsolete and break down so much that they had to be replaced with a new automobile. Corporate greed drove the American consumer to buy Japanese imports. Toyota became synonymous with quality while Dodge, (my own experience) was nothing but junk. I bought a new 1977 Dodge Aspen Wagon and as soon as I took it home it began having stalling problems. After numerous visits to the dealer to have the problem fixed, I wound up having a Holly carburetor installed. I see I am getting too far off topic! Please keep up the great work! Someday it may hit these manufacturers that they will not get repeat business if the quality of their products is shoddy. People tend to have long memories about being stuck with a bad product, especially automobiles because of their cost. Gracias hermano!

I own Hyundai Santa Fe 2014 with 89,000 mileage and unfortunately, just a week ago without any warning ,my engine seized on the highway cruising at 70mph. I've been doing regular oil change at almost every 3,000 miles. One of the most life threatening moments I've ever encountered. God saved me , almost lost control after the engine seized abruptly at such speed. Unfortunately, in Ghana there is no official hyundai dealers to handle the recall replacement. I'm stucked now and have regretted ever buying Hyundai. I will consider more reliable brands like Toyota and Honda especially in Africa where we don't have official hyundai dealers.

So I’ll be calling in the morning, i babied this car and it only has 100k on the odometer, I’m an asshole I won’t stop until it’s mended, I’m still paying for it… I can’t afford 5k for a motor that was shit from the factory,
I will say that light turned on, and I pulled over immediately,
Lol my old focus did the same and I limped it home and now it’s completely fucked, so I’m hoping they honor their warranty

I have a 2013 Sonata with 93k miles. My car just died 2 weeks ago with code p1326. After getting the run around from multiple dealerships, they finally approved my engine replacement. They said there is no recall even though I can find it on their website and when I enter my VIN, it says my car is affected. They told me Hyundai extended the warranty to up to 120k miles which is why my car was covered. The new engine comes with a new warranty, so make sure you get the Warranty paperwork when you pick your car up. From everything I’ve dealt with regarding this issue, it seems like dealerships HATE doing warranty work and will do everything to try and not replace the engine for free even tho it is an issue from the manufacturer.

As with many others, I too own a 2016 KIA Sorento. My kids were driving it, on 7/10/2021, and it just died. I had it towed to the nearest auto shop and they diagnosed it as the engine. I contacted the Kia customer service and was told that since I did not have the KSDS installed, they were not liable. I attempted to explain to the representative that I had no knowledge of the KSDS update. She CONTINUOUSLY reminded me that this was NOT a recall, it is a "Civil Law Suit" So, I contacted the first local dealership and was told not to even pursue the issue because every time they had submitted a claim it was denied. So, I call a second dealership, they told me to have it towed to their dealership and they would submit the claim. Well, as you probably guessed, they too denied it on the grounds of not having the KSDS installed BEFORE the engine failure. As mentioned several times in this video, I had no idea that of the KSDS update So, as many of you, I have a 2016 Kia Sorento sitting in a KIA dealership parking lot awaiting for me to dispose of it. I was also told that since I had 158K on the vehicle, it wouldn't qualify, even if I had the KSDS, because of the mileage.
ALSO, as mentioned in the video, aside from everything that I have already mentioned, the Service manager told me even if the claim would have been accepted, there is no telling when they could get the engine or parts to have it replaced. With all of these scenario's, KIA needs to extend the replacement window out even further than the Aug 9, 2021 deadline.

Prob is the cheapest i have found will be 5k to my door and me do the work. Now i am fully capable of doing the work to either rebuild or replace. . . I don’t think we as consumers should be left responsible for their screw up. Hoping you have better luck in the long run than me.

Our tow truck driver said he had towed 8 kias to the dealership this week, informed us about the lawsuit, and told us it would be best to tow it to them. Kia firstly tried to deny us because we didnt get an extended warranty, to which I reply your engine failure almost killed us on the interstate and now we are stranded 3 hours from home (our VIN is listed in recall) They DID NOT want our vehicle towed to their shop, they told us to have it towed home!! I couldn't afford that and said I just need it towed and it has to be to them. wow. I am so glad I argued.

We replaced the engine ourselves with a used engine at 45,000 miles. 30,000 miles later, the used engine is suffering from the same thing. Meticulous service records in hand, but the valves and engine strength appear to be failing.

They kept fixing oil leak. So they say. And said everything else fine. So one day went in and then they came back and said engine rods bearing were gone. Can't drive the car... I am 2nd owner and bought extra coverage so new engine was put in and I paid less...it was close to 10,000. For new engine. This was in 2018. Guess what oil leaks again. Well leaks about 6 months after. Private mechanic I took it to said leak is around the timing belt....I no longer have any extended coverage. I am disabled and rely on the car. The motor was 1 problem. I have had 1 thing after another. I cant afford a newer car, believe me what I have been through with this kia is a nightmare. Since we received the letter about the recall right around the time the engine started acting up, we scheduled the appoitment which took around two months. Finally got the car in and the KIA dealership advised that Kia will likely decline as the KDS update was not done and 154,000 miles but they were still going to send a KIA technition to check out the car. After seeing everyones comments I told my daughter that it's likely time to find a new car. The only thing I every had repaired was my alternator which AAA did a diagnostic on my vehicle which determined that was the problem. I spoke with Kia they only had the previous owner on file which is why I never knew of a recall. I spoke to Kia customer service which inform me there are no recalls for any parts that would cause an engine to catch fire. I'm truly blessed I made it out of my vehicle very traumatic experience.

My girlfriends was denied at 78K due to the update not being completed. We had no idea as the letter Kia claimed to have sent never arrived. It wasn’t certified which is on them. We spent $10K for repairs and rental and I don’t intend to let this go once the Nu engine lawsuit finalizes later this year. The fact that this update would not have prevented failure means they have no leg to stand on. Even their corporate manager told me that the update puts the car into limp mode but the engine would still need replacement.
Based on that it’s not difficult to argue that the “fix” doesn’t solve the issue thus it cannot be used as a reason to deny claims.

That's why I haven't had the KSDS update on my 2016 Kia Soul (just got it paid off in May 2023!!) even though i have received 2 letters about it over the last 3 years - don't trust software, and it doesn't make any sense to me. It's like putting a Band-Aid on a boo-boo leading us to believe it will get all better in 2 weeks - good grief :( Sounds like they're just "kicking the can down the road." I agree with thomasmuirhead above that the KSDS is BS. Why do you need help in hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine? So far, my kia soul is running okay, but now i'm uneasy and unsure whether or not to keep driving it. Don't want to trade it in because don't want someone else to end up with this same problem. I'm wondering if the KSDS is part of the problem. Shouldn't these "new" cars already have this sensor software factory installed?

  • @thomasmuirhead8579
    @thomasmuirhead8579 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess I really lucked out. Second owner. Had my 2017 Kia Sorento towed to the local dealership after it experienced power failure. Could hear the knock in the engine and pretty much new it was shot. I didn't know about the civil settlement, but after a week I got a call from Kia and they told me I was covered for a new engine. My Kia had 76000 miles and I did the oil changes for the last 15k miles (5 of them always at 3k miles).
Being the second owner and doing my own oil changes did not affect the replacement. They are also covering my rental car for the duration of the replacement.
I am so satisfied I expect my next car purchase to be a Kia, but after seeing all the problems others have been put through I guess I will have to rethink that. I purchased my vechile after the knock sensor recall, so I believe the dealership I bought it from already installed the recall when I bought it.
The knock sensor is bullshit. The car will still fail. Trying to blame owners, when the engine fails, knowing that it still fails with regular oil changes is nonsense.
Also to note, when my car went into limp mode I drove it 2.5 miles to the nearest auto zone. Then I had it towed to Kia. Definitely don't drive the vechile in limp mode. At that point you have experienced extreme engine failure, don't give them an excuse to deny you.

I will NEVER buy a Kia again. I have been struggling with them for months over this recall. My car has gone into limp mode & makes engine knocking noises. The person I was working with at the Kia dealership told me he expected Kia to replace the engine, but I was denied because my car “wasn’t making enough noise.” However, the noise was the whole reason I initially brought the car in & then heard about the recall. They held my car for over a month with no rental & were extremely hard to get a hold of. They eventually released the car back to me saying it was safe to drive.
I am still terrified to drive this car as it has trouble accelerating & will blow out excessive clouds of smoke when increasing in speed quickly. I will frequently turn my hazard lights on as my car will randomly act up on the interstate. Terrifying… but Kia has deemed my car “safe” to drive. I have lost all respect for Kia & will forever advise others to never buy a Kia.

So, first thank you for the videos, I had a question for you. Awhile back I had taken my 2015 Kia Sorento into the KIA dealership for multiple recalls, one I remember was they did the update on the computer for I believe the KSDS. Fast forward to a few days ago, I am driving home on the highway and the car went into limp home mode, had to slowly make my way home and off the highway. I took it back to the KIA dealership not knowing about any of these engine issues they had going on. I was scared I was about to be out thousands for a repair. The KIA dealerships here are super backed up and the guy told me that it could be up to 5 days before they even look at it, other KIA dealerships are about a month he said "For the exact same issues". So today I called and they said they did get a chance to bring it back and it has been approved for an "long engine block replacement", they are ordering the parts and it will be a week before they get in (he didn't mention how long it would take once they get them in). They have no loaners because they are so backed up and it has literally screwed me as far as getting to work and such. After now doing research, what am I eligible for as far as reimbursement? Will they pay for a rental? Or me missing work? I thought I read that they are paying like $50 a day for a rental? I looked at rentals here at they are at minimum for the smallest car like $80+ a day right now. This whole thing is super frustrating, part of me wants to just trade in my car once its fixed. Will never buy a KIA again. Thanks for any response.

I answered your question in my newest live video. In short, #1 i am glad they are going to fix your car. #2 make sure you get some time of agreement in writing or a good conversation with someone else there to confirm that they understand that they need to pay you back for any money spent for a rental. Outside of that, as long as they are going to fix your car, I dont see them paying you anything this else. Please keep me posted.

The soul does have a recall but its not called the ksds because the recall on the soul is related to the engine piston rings not the rod bearings. You have to contact your local kia dealership and ask them for the software update on your car. My personal opinion is if you get the update soon then you will be protected against any further engine issues. But again this is just my opinion and anything can happen and KIA has the right to deny any future services. Read the fine print and do a lot of research. Or trade your car in for a toyota lol

I have a 2012 Sonata and the engine blew. Hyundai rebuilt the engine. But this was at the beginning of the engine problems in 2018. I also have a 2015 and just recently that engine blew. It is under 100k miles. So it is still under the 100k mile drive train warranty. (OR SHOULD BE) They denied covering my car under the (extended class action settlement) because recall 953 was not preformed. I was never informed that mt 2015 had a recall. I had never received any recalls for my 2015. There is 3 recalls for my 2015 and I strongly doubt my mailman lost all of them. But I did receive 7 recalls for my 2012 and all got done in a timely matter. (Because I received them in the mail) The 2012 even had the recall #953! I believe they are so overwhelmed with engine swaps especially in cold climates. They do not send owners out notices of the recalls to people that don't get their cars serviced at the dealer. Its a way to not pay out! They hope you go over the 100k with out the recall 953. I (didn't) go over the 100k and they still won't honor the 100k drive train warranty. My Sonata is sitting with no engine but I still owe 5000.00 on the car loan. It comes down to Sonata using the same terrible engines with known issues year after year. The genuine Theta II 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter gasoline direct injection engine within OEM specifications. There is a sea of cars at my local dealer waiting for a engine even with the recall 953 preformed. Corporate is the problem not the dealers. They are willing to do the work if corporate will pay with the warranty. I am still fighting even after corporate gave me a final decision of NO and closed the case. They just are not honoring the settlement and in my case the original 100k mile drive train warranty. I need help! I can't believe this, denied under 100k.

Hi Carl. I recently bought a 2013 Sorento. The guy I bought it from had the engine replaced at a Kia dealership. I assume the engine seized. I have the ksds installed and am currently having it serviced at a different kia dealership. If the engine has problems again am I covered? Also I know you speak highly of kia transmissions. They are suggesting that I have my transmission fluid flushed but not knowing the history I wonder if I should pass on that? Thanks for all your videos!!!

    • @StraightOuttaContent
      @StraightOuttaContent  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes you are covered, especially if you have that ksds. Not many know but if you get your engine replaced, the new used engine also comes covered. Let me know if they give you the run around but it seems like they are going to take care of you. As far as their transmissions! they really are strong. I dk how many miles you have on that car but I personally wouldn't want them touching my transmission unless for some odd reason there was a leak or something. Outside of that id tell them nogo on the transmission service. They suggest it because they have to pull the engine from the transmission and sometimes fluid leaks out. Personally I would say just make sure you put back what comes out but as far as a flush that just sounds like they are trying to squeeze some money out of you. If its a free service then maybe!!! but if the car has under 150k on it i wouldn't touch that transmission. DISCLAIMER I AM NOT A CERTIFIED MECHANIC. THE ADVICE ABOVE IS MY PERSONAL OPINION FROM MY EXPERIENCE WORKING ON CARS. lol had to throw that in there.

Thanks for the great video! I haven't completed it yet, but wanted to make this point while it is on my mind. So, assume that the software update was done, and you get the notification that there is a problem. At that point, engine failure is underway, and damage has occurred. Were the subsequent repairs any less costly by having the notification and continuing to drive as they say you can for a while, or was engine replacement still required? It seems that they are trying to make the case that, if update not done, then you have caused them to have to spend more money to repair the vehicle, and, therefore, they should not be liable. If that is their case, then it doesn't seem to hold water.

I just ran across your video. Great info! I have a 2016 Sorento that the engine just blew on. It has been using a quart or more of oil every 1000 miles. I had the car towed to a Kia dealership. They charged me $125 inspection fee to see what the problem was. They say it is piston ring failure on cylinder two. Zero compression. I've opened a case with Kia Consumer Affairs but am being turned down for engine replacement because it isn't a main bearing or rod issue. They want to charge me another $235 to take the oil pan off and look at the "backside" of the engine. I feel screwed either way I go. Do I keep throwing inspection money at this, hire a lawyer, try to start another class action against Kia? I know from a day on the internet that their are dozens, if not hundreds of Kia owners with blown engines and denied culpability from Kia. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

They say their system is kept up to date to include maintenance visits and local registration, but they never mailed anything out... so I called their bs. They then said they'd have to tear down and inspect the motor to determine the cause of failure... then they'd call us once they have a diagnosis.
Before I even got home from dropping the car off, I called corporate and ran through the full story again. 48 hours later, they called us and let us know they would be covering everything under the recall.
