Has there ever been a band with a weirder story between albums? Weezer has their debut album blow up huge. Instead of following up, Rivers chooses to go to fucking Harvard of all places. But first he has an extremely painful surgery to lengthen his leg. Their bassist starts another band that scores a pretty big hit song. Meanwhile their frontman hobbles around Harvard on a cane and with a giant beard while people wear shirts of his band but don’t recognize him as a member of that band.
I remembered hearing Rivers tell that story where he walked around seeing kids wearing Weezer shirts everywhere but he felt lonely and nobody recognized him, crazy to think about. Reminds me of Nick Mira, a young producer who said he would hear kids at high school play Juice WRLD all day not knowing that he, a fellow student, made all of those songs
That pretty big hit song is "Friends of P" by the Rentals in case anyone is wondering.

I was 25 when Pinkerton was released. I distinctly remember listening to this track over and over while learning my way around San Francisco. Now I'm a father, and my daughter is a half-Japanese girl. Not sure what she'll make of this song when she eventually finds it in my music archive.

@@davidhagberg2135 I had to be 21 when this one came out. It was regular play in my college scene shop. My nine year old daughter really likes the Blue Album. I can tell because she dosen't complain when I listen to it in the car, and she appreciates the fact that the video for UnDone is probably one of the things that got me into Theater and Film. El Scorcho isn't too bad either, but nine, heck 19 is way too young for Pinkerton. This album is pretty deep on a lot of levels, which is why it felt so underground back when we all had disk-mans. I'm kinda a big believer you shouldn't let your kids watch Casablanca, Citizen Cain or the Goonies until they can understand what they're being exposed to. Until you've drunkenly stumbled into a back ally Arts district pub to find your Ex who left you for your medieval lit professor and his wife, drunkenly performing a striptease on stage which may or may not have anything to do with Bertol Brecht's interpretation of a 19th century opera, ........... Well until you've had something like that happen, Pinkerton is probably not gonna make a lot of sense.

This is hands down my favorite Weezer song. My friends and I have bonded over Weezer ever since I moved and met them, and we finally got to see them last week and had some of the most fun I've ever had at a concert. We were screaming the lyrics and freaking out every time ANYTHING happened onstage. When they played this song my best friend and I absolutely lost our minds because we weren't expecting it to make the set list. It was such a great experience and Weezer is SO good live. Thank you guys for making great music and bringing me together with some truly amazing people!
They were so awesome on the Indie Rock Road trip. We saw them twice, in Irving, TX, and OKC. My son and I are Weezlings. That's what Rivers called the audience. ❤ lol. They were the best shows ever

When this song was released as Pinkertons first single- it caused almost every Weezer fan to go WTF 🤢 And most didn’t give the rest of the album a listen and gave up on Weezer. For a few years at least lol

i love 2:15 so much and keep replaying it, it works on so many levels. depending on how you read it can be cathartic, depressed, frustrated, or a combination. i also love how its just a break of raw, vulnerable, emotion after a somewhat comedic setup, and the music video showing a long scene of just Rivers singing with a passionately mixed expression is just the cherry on top... GOD i love this band
Pat always seems like a really fun guy to hang around.
During the initial pinkerton tour in Chicago, we waited from noon to get into see the show a 9pm show and it rained and it rocked at The Riviera theatre. So after the show we quickly exited tired cold and all rocked out. So we headed for the exits quickly and walking home crossing an alley from the venue Lo and behold we see Pat, Matt and Brian. Matt screamed and ran for a cab and Pat kinda ran around when we asked for autographs. So funny, Brian ever the gentleman stood around took pics with my cousin and his future wife. Then a crowd started gathering and we left but Brian in a fancy crushed velvet tuxedo jacket stood around in the drizzle posing for pics and signing autographs. It was the second from last show on the initial Pinkerton run and the next day in Detroit a bunch of Rivers gear was stolen including the melody maker Brian was using that was in the inside of Weezer Blue that was largely used for the Rhythm guitar tracks on that album.

Pinkerton is one of the best albums I've ever heard. I remember getting it for Christmas in 1996 and being blown away by it. Leagues ahead of the Blue Album in my opinion.

I remembered this being a flop when it was released and Pinkerton was like a lightning rod for critical backlash. I loved the songs that i had heard on my local alt station back then, this and the good life, and fucking loving them! It wouldn't be until a few years later that i would get a copy of Pinkerton and by then, it was deemed "grossly underrated" and it became cool all of a sudden and I'm thinking, it was always cool! Like me.finally getting to hear the while album years later, maybe others had to have their time pass before truly hearing it. Ugh! now I'm rambling! It's just a great record! That is all!
I remember the commercial for this album on MTV. They played the chorus to "El Scorcho". It was catchy, but I didn't hear the whole song until two years later, and realized what I had been missing. I think that is the case for most people, hence the "cult" popularity. This song is beautiful.

I love that as this song progresses. You see the guys obsessed over this girl, and the more obsessed he gets, the farther away she gets, and then near the outro he just implodes
These dudes are pros. They came to Des Moines last Saturday for a festival and played the slickest headlining set I've ever seen. They haven't been to Iowa much, so they made sure to play (and just destroy) the hits. They also made a show of the newer stuff including some impressive (Blue Album like) harmonies and a song with Rivers in the background vocally. Over 20 years later and still just killing it. Edit: I really loved how they treated the encore. Stage went dark after they finished a song and they all started to walk off. Crowd started screaming immediately (we had to scream for that) and the band did a quick lap around the stage and got back up on stage for Buddy Holly. Buddy Holly finished with all four standing behind the trap set doing a drum-roll-salute.
I was at that show in DSM (80/35 right?). I'm not one to sing along at concerts since I'm paying them to that. But, man, when they played this I sure as hell did. Special moment.

Rivers and the Mark Romanek (the director) got into a disagreement on how the video was to be edited which led him to remove his name from the directing credit. There are apparently 2 music videos for the song. This is Mark Romanek's video. The other one is said to be edited under Rivers supervision. This all happened in 1996 moron

The more I listen to this song, the more I realize it's about Rivers' relationship with music than some damn half-japanese girl. Given the time frame, pretty much anyone who loved rock music was torn between the oversaturation of grunge and anything else. And in commercial music, grunge won. 'Watching grunge legdrop new jack through a press table...' might make anyone who wasn't all in on grunge want to walk away. Then he met someone not in that scene that introduced him to something different. He fell back in love with music, but wasn't really sure it loved him back...
He didn't actually come up with that line, it's taken straight from an essay one of his fellow Harvard students wrote for an expository writing class.

I'm just wondering why Pinkerton is a "bad" album by so many peoples' standards. Personally it's my favorite album. I listened to it (as well as the blue and green albums) growing up, but really got into Pinkerton specifically a couple of years ago. So solid, in my humble opinion. :) I'm glad Rivers changed his mind about it.

Man, this music video is my favorite out of all the weezer music videos. Its great because everybodies here including Matt, in widescreen and its pretty good looking for a video from the 90s. Its just great because this is the most hd video of the original weezer. Also those half japanese girls
El Scorcho by Weezer is definitely one of the 90s classic love songs that has aged well in a similar way to fine wine.

These guys were so big. You weren't obsessed with them, but every word or movement had this "big significance". Now they're old, and when you watch this you just see a bunch of young kids - albeit it's still a good song and they are awesome artists.

At my school I thought Weezer was coming back because I overheard some kids talking about them a lot. Turns out there favourite album was the white album but it didn't really matter what there favourite was. Turns out that is the only album they knew about and thought they were a "new" band. They heard about Weezer because of that Panic at the disco thing that they did. Dreams were crushed that day.
