This music video has so many awesome things: 1. The room is upside down when the camera enters. This isn’t actually a camera trick or editing. The people in the hallway at the start were actually suspended from the ceiling to get this shot. 2. The video transitions from black and white to colour when the lights come on. 3. The video is in slow motion meaning Weezer were actually playing the song at around 1.5x speed for the video. 4. The video is on a set with a blue screen and other cameras that are never used. 5. Pat Wilson's Drumkit is only fitted with the drums he needs for this song. Bass, Snare, Floor Tom and Cymbals. 6. Weezer make very little attempt to look like they're playing the song. Note: Rivers just strumming the open strings and Matt sat on the floor. 7. All of the equipment is either not plugged in or not turned on. Note: Brian's microphone cable just lying on the floor, lying on the flooorrr, it's come undone. 8. None of them are wearing sweaters. 9. Dogs. 10. It's Weezer all over. I just love how unabashedly nerdy they are in this video, and they're not even pretending to actually play the instruments. I want to hear an unedited version of that recording, just them strumming mindlessly at their guitars and tapping away at the drums and the dogs trotting about at random, it would be amazing.
I love songs with overlapping spoken dialogue bits that help carry the story. The detachment the main speaker feels is so emphasized through that, in this case. The song wouldn’t be nearly as personality filled without those parts coloring everything else.
I just adore how the camera is constantly panning around in this slow motion way, like you're submerged under water, with the lights fading in and out. And how did they get all the band members to do such a great job. It seems instantly choreographed and spontaneous. Really well done. The song is okay too.
You probably saw the other comment on this video, but if you didn't, it said that the entire video actually *is* played in slow motion. If you put the video speed to 1.5, you can see the actual speed of the video.
The track is a metaphor for the fragility of one's life and relationships. Throughout the song, they use the image of a sweater unraveling to represent when something in one's life begins to fall apart. The chorus references this idea, where the singer is metaphorically unraveling and is asking someone to hold onto the thread as they walk away. It conveys the idea of separating from someone or something in a peaceful, non-destructive way. They also explore the idea of being alone and lost, using the line "I’ll soon be naked/Lying on the floor, lying on the floor, I’ve come undone", which suggests that being on one's own is an inevitable part of life. Ultimately, the song serves as an ode to the fragility of life and encourages the listener to cherish their relationships while they can, and take time to appreciate the moments they have.
This has always been my favorite weezer song. My dad passed on the 17th and my mom told me my dad loved this song too. I didn’t even know my dad liked weezer.
This song so represents my life. In 2010 I lost my home, in 2015 my son (and only child died). Many other things have happened as well. Life at times can be an unraveling sweater that you just can't stop no matter how hard you try. 😢 My son was a big fan of Weezer as well.
For guitarists it goes: Pattern 1: 6 times Pattern 2: 4 times Pattern 1: 2 times Pattern 2: 6 times Pattern 3 (or solo): 4 times and the rest of the song is Pattern 2 (It wont make sense unless you know the 3 patterns but for people who know here you go)
I used to fall asleep to the blue album at full blast in 7th grade. One of the most important albums in my adolescence. It was music for geeks before being a geek was a cool thing. God I love this band, especially this album
@@sernoddicusthegallant6986 sure, but a lot of artists or bands that have been making music for 20+ years have had one or two blips. The fact that they can still make good music is what I mean
The production on this was incredible audio and visual…from the crowd dialogue to the placement of cinematic cuts aligning with the energy of the song….sheeesh just a prime example of why the 90’s was the best era ever!!!💯🤘🏽❤️
30 years ago this band became my first “favorite band” as a High Schooler and it started with this video. Super rare you still have that band relevant and still making great music all this time to current day.
Weezer is such a nostalgic band for me. Reminds me of 1998 middle school mornings on the grass in front of the school with that one guy who brings an acoustic guitar and strums something up real quick before school starts!
Am I the only one that genuinely thinks their music is good. Like out of jokes and because it's "weird" or "uncool" like i actually vibe with this shit
They actually ARE playing their instruments though. They filmed this video while the band was playing to a sped up version of the song, and when they slowed it down, it gave the illusion that they were playing at the right tempo, just moving in slow motion. I learned about it in a video production class I took a couple years ago.
He means they aren't trying to match the recordings. This video was filmed around 25 times or so, and after like the 13th Weezer gave up on trying to perfectly match the recording and started screwing around. They're technically "playing" at the right tempo but at certain points you can tell that they aren't hitting the right spots in the video, Pat starts drumming the air, Matt straight stops playing several times and even sits down once to bob his head to the music, Brian occasionally only strums half the notes, Rivers plays with one hand...it's all an observation of the casual flippancy of the video. They don't try to be professionals, they're just goofing around. I think out of the 25 or so recordings they did they settled on recording 17, 18, 19 or 20.
@@OwenAllRound Weezer was most definitely not pop before 2001, do they have a few pop songs after their second album? Yeah. But this one isn't pop at all just because it follows a generic chord progression. That's like saying that Johnny Cash is pop because he uses popular chord progressions, that isn't what defines a genre of music
Yes. The famous physicist Sean Carroll would agree with you as he is a proponent of the “many worlds interpretation” of quantum mechanics which posits that there are likely an infinite number of worlds/universes where every outcome is realized.
I love the simplicity of this! In a time of crazy music videos this is right to the point and it’s so simple!! It’s literally just a group of guys on a stage jamming out and having fun at the end of the day that’s what music is all about!!
guys I never listened to weezer always just thought they were a bad band... I'm just now discovering the wonder of their music... this is a great time for me
I just love how nerdy everyone acts in these video from Matt's snapping to Brian's shaking around to whatever the hell Pat was doing at 3:06, it's so classic and charming
Man, I remember when I first heard Weezer. I was picking my friend up on the way to school and he had a copy of this album on a cassette. I put it in and remember it sounded different than anything else I'd heard. It was just so raw and different. Needless to say I kept the tape. I still feel that nostalgia when I hear this song specifically. I always remember pulling up to his apartment and him pulling the tape out of his backpack. lol
😂 I just read this in an article I searched up because this song popped up on the radio and I was like why is sanitarium in a different tuning what is this, then I realize it’s fucking weezer lmaoo. > “‘The Sweater Song’ was the first Weezer song I ever wrote, back in 1991,” Cuomo says. “I was trying to write a Velvet Underground-type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that riff. And it just feels so classic to me, even now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you’re just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn’t until years after I wrote it that I realized it’s almost a complete rip-off of ‘Sanitarium’ by Metallica. But wow I really like it actually given it a full listen.
Love Weezer. Thanks to my son, who listened to this band in high school. I would not have listened to them if it wasn't for him. He's grown now with two kids.
Miss Lady. I was in my Junior year from 1995-1996 going to United Christian School in Cody, Wyoming. We had a 90.1 KYDZ Radio Station at Cody High School.
The "if you want to destroy my sweater / pull this thread as I walk away" line is genuinely fantastic. It works on so many levels. Rivers sure fluctuates between writing complete garbage and stuff like ~that~ a lot.
Karolis Dervinis not neccesarily. You can always try looking at things symbolically I.E 'his sweater' what he puts on to cover himself in this case could be talking about his true self vs what he pretends to be to others so when he becomes undone when the thread is pulled could be symbolic for walking away from the sweater a.k.a the false self until its gone. A journey inward.
2:17 = pure happiness. This whole album takes me back to the days of Mario Kart on SNES with my friends, and dreaming about that girl in my 7th grade math class.
I remember this song coming out on MTV and completely falling in love with this music....it was a great time for music and the genre. Glad to have experienced it.

They use it in this song to great effect. Check out Nada Surf's "Popular" and Butthole Surfers "Let's Talk About Cars" too.

The most brilliant thing an English teacher ever said
99.9% don't get this. This is a VERY dark song. To most however it's a catchy tune with a comical reference to what happens when you pull on a thread.
and English paper done ... (dw ill credit you)
Honestly, it’s just about a sweater
I thought the sweater was a metaphor about how a person you love so much just takes something away from your soul after you walk away from them.
This has always been my favorite weezer song. My dad passed on the 17th and my mom told me my dad loved this song too. I didn’t even know my dad liked weezer.

Weezer is such a nostalgic band for me. Reminds me of 1998 middle school mornings on the grass in front of the school with that one guy who brings an acoustic guitar and strums something up real quick before school starts!

I have no ide what the **** the whole "uncool" thing is with music. I DON'T.

For Sho Sho
the guitars riffs are awesome plus that retro sound..the band is really unique what a gemm¡¡
I love how they're not even trying to look like they're playing their instruments in the video
They actually ARE playing their instruments though. They filmed this video while the band was playing to a sped up version of the song, and when they slowed it down, it gave the illusion that they were playing at the right tempo, just moving in slow motion. I learned about it in a video production class I took a couple years ago.
he's literally using 1 hand to play guitar towards the end...
I think out of the 25 or so recordings they did they settled on recording 17, 18, 19 or 20.
how in the world did you find this out??
in one part of the video, the bassist is swinging his hand around and patting his bass.. he clearly wasn't playing tht time
This reminds me of my fiance that passed away. He loved this song. It's makes my smile .

I just love how nerdy everyone acts in these video from Matt's snapping to Brian's shaking around to whatever the hell Pat was doing at 3:06, it's so classic and charming
and river's haircut
The opening is what makes me love the song
Man, I remember when I first heard Weezer. I was picking my friend up on the way to school and he had a copy of this album on a cassette. I put it in and remember it sounded different than anything else I'd heard. It was just so raw and different. Needless to say I kept the tape. I still feel that nostalgia when I hear this song specifically. I always remember pulling up to his apartment and him pulling the tape out of his backpack. lol
This is iconic. Like who thinks of a melody like that. It was so new.
The riff is literally sanitarium by metallica lol

Miss Lady. I was in my Junior year from 1995-1996 going to United Christian School in Cody, Wyoming. We had a 90.1 KYDZ Radio Station at Cody High School.
Now that this video is remastered/uncropped, I like that we can now see Matt's face impressed by Rivers' solo at 1:59
The "if you want to destroy my sweater / pull this thread as I walk away" line is genuinely fantastic. It works on so many levels. Rivers sure fluctuates between writing complete garbage and stuff like ~that~ a lot.
JebaJebaJemeh it’s because he just steals shit that he hears, bro. have you heard of their process? Maybe thats just the newer stuff
test text lol what?
it only has one meaning. The literal meaning. If you pull on a thread of a sweater, the sweater will unravel.
EvilPeppermintHelix I was being sarcastic. It's very obvious that the sweater is a metaphor. If you take it literally it doesn't make much sense.
