This music video has so many awesome things:
1. The room is upside down when the camera enters. This isn’t actually a camera trick or editing. The people in the hallway at the start were actually suspended from the ceiling to get this shot.
2. The video transitions from black and white to colour when the lights come on.
3. The video is in slow motion meaning Weezer were actually playing the song at around 1.5x speed for the video.
4. The video is on a set with a blue screen and other cameras that are never used.
5. Pat Wilson's Drumkit is only fitted with the drums he needs for this song. Bass, Snare, Floor Tom and Cymbals.
6. Weezer make very little attempt to look like they're playing the song. Note: Rivers just strumming the open strings and Matt sat on the floor.
7. All of the equipment is either not plugged in or not turned on. Note: Brian's microphone cable just lying on the floor, lying on the flooorrr, it's come undone.
8. None of them are wearing sweaters.
9. Dogs.
10. It's Weezer all over. I fell in love with this band because of this song and video. It's fun and it's cool as heck.

I love how they purposely made no attempt to synchronize the music with the playing. And the running of the hounds. Perfect!
It looks like they had the band play along to the song at a higher tempo and then put it in slow mo to have their playing loosely line up with the recording. Pretty cool effect IMO
I think this is a Spike Jones joint.
Yup that's what Spike Jonze did. Apparently out of the 25 treatments they were sent, Spike Jonze was the only one that didn't include an actual sweater. Even when they specified they wanted no sweaters, everyone pitched sweaters to them like "I do what I want, I do what I want!" Also, the video is one continuous shot, they did 25 takes, and this was between takes 15 and 20 somewhere, & they were sick of doing it over and over and starting to get goofy. The drummer especially because he was coming to terms with one of the dogs shitting on his bass drum pedal right before.
Especially the drummer. Half the time he's just throwing random limbs at random parts of the drum kit.

I love songs with overlapping spoken dialogue bits that help carry the story. The detachment the main speaker feels is so emphasized through that, in this case. The song wouldn’t be nearly as personality filled without those parts coloring everything else.
They use it in this song to great effect. Check out Nada Surf's "Popular" and Butthole Surfers "Let's Talk About Cars" too.
Check out steak for chicken by the moldy peaches, probably the best example of this ive ever seen
Pat is my favorite part of this video. The dancing, the running, the faces.
God I love this band
The track is a metaphor for the fragility of one's life and relationships. Throughout the song, they use the image of a sweater unraveling to represent when something in one's life begins to fall apart. The chorus references this idea, where the singer is metaphorically unraveling and is asking someone to hold onto the thread as they walk away. It conveys the idea of separating from someone or something in a peaceful, non-destructive way. They also explore the idea of being alone and lost, using the line "I’ll soon be naked/Lying on the floor, lying on the floor, I’ve come undone", which suggests that being on one's own is an inevitable part of life. Ultimately, the song serves as an ode to the fragility of life and encourages the listener to cherish their relationships while they can, and take time to appreciate the moments they have.
The most brilliant thing an English teacher ever said
99.9% don't get this. This is a VERY dark song. To most however it's a catchy tune with a comical reference to what happens when you pull on a thread.
and English paper done ... (dw ill credit you)
Honestly, it’s just about a sweater
I thought the sweater was a metaphor about how a person you love so much just takes something away from your soul after you walk away from them.
This song so represents my life. In 2010 I lost my home, in 2015 my son (and only child died). Many other things have happened as well. Life at times can be an unraveling sweater that you just can't stop no matter how hard you try. 😢

I love how they're not even trying to look like they're playing their instruments in the video
They actually ARE playing their instruments though. They filmed this video while the band was playing to a sped up version of the song, and when they slowed it down, it gave the illusion that they were playing at the right tempo, just moving in slow motion. I learned about it in a video production class I took a couple years ago.
he's literally using 1 hand to play guitar towards the end...
He means they aren't trying to match the recordings. This video was filmed around 25 times or so, and after like the 13th Weezer gave up on trying to perfectly match the recording and started screwing around. They're technically "playing" at the right tempo but at certain points you can tell that they aren't hitting the right spots in the video, Pat starts drumming the air, Matt straight stops playing several times and even sits down once to bob his head to the music, Brian occasionally only strums half the notes, Rivers plays with one hand...it's all an observation of the casual flippancy of the video. They don't try to be professionals, they're just goofing around.
I think out of the 25 or so recordings they did they settled on recording 17, 18, 19 or 20.
how in the world did you find this out??
in one part of the video, the bassist is swinging his hand around and patting his bass.. he clearly wasn't playing tht time

I JUST NOW realized Rivers is wearing a soccer jersey. The story behind it is that, when he was 20, Rivers went to Veracruz with very little money. When he arrived, a small boy - around 10 or 11 years old - let him stay at his parents' house. The family didn't have much money either but still gave him food, shelter, and care. After a few days, Rivers was about to leave when the boy gave him the jersey of Los Tiburones Rojos del Veracruz (the Red Sharks of Veracruz). It was the boys favorite soccer team but he liked Rivers so much that he decided to give him the jersey. Ever since then, Rivers has kept the jersey and most recently, in 2014, wore it when they were in Mexico while they played this song, "Undone - The Seawater Song".

And I die
If you want to destroy my sweater (whoa, oh, oh)
Hold this thread as I walk away (as I walk away)
Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked
Lying on the floor, lying on the floor
I've come undone

I scrolled so long to find this, deserves more likes
They just don’t miss bro, nothing will ever be like this group of guys. Legendary.
they still arent missing tbh
Imma be real with you. Hurley was a big miss
I love weezer but seriously have you listened to their full discography theyve had a few misses
@@sernoddicusthegallant6986 sure, but a lot of artists or bands that have been making music for 20+ years have had one or two blips. The fact that they can still make good music is what I mean
95% of their output is a miss but that's okay I'm still a weezer simp
Rivers Cuomo con la playera de los Tiburones Rojos del Veracruz una verdadera joya! Saludos desde México!
rivers: Guitar overload
brian: beats up the mic
pat: goes crazy and jumps off stuff
matt: just drops his bass and sings.
Actually one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard
Bro is deaf

you know i started listening to Weezer ironically but unironically the blue album just puts you in such a happy mood.
the drum fill at 3:25 is so important pat goes from bullshitting around to actually playing it.
The "if you want to destroy my sweater / pull this thread as I walk away" line is genuinely fantastic. It works on so many levels. Rivers sure fluctuates between writing complete garbage and stuff like ~that~ a lot.
JebaJebaJemeh it’s because he just steals shit that he hears, bro. have you heard of their process? Maybe thats just the newer stuff
test text lol what?
it only has one meaning. The literal meaning. If you pull on a thread of a sweater, the sweater will unravel.
Karolis Dervinis not neccesarily. You can always try looking at things symbolically I.E 'his sweater' what he puts on to cover himself in this case could be talking about his true self vs what he pretends to be to others so when he becomes undone when the thread is pulled could be symbolic for walking away from the sweater a.k.a the false self until its gone. A journey inward.
EvilPeppermintHelix I was being sarcastic. It's very obvious that the sweater is a metaphor. If you take it literally it doesn't make much sense.
This song is always a good companion. It makes me want to rage out but also to chill because nothing lasts forever and we can't change that.
I swear I could listen to this all day and still love it.
Prove it
@@PhantomObiWan thats fucking obiwan
This is one of the most unironically best song in all of the universe (:
Man, I remember when I first heard Weezer. I was picking my friend up on the way to school and he had a copy of this album on a cassette. I put it in and remember it sounded different than anything else I'd heard. It was just so raw and different. Needless to say I kept the tape. I still feel that nostalgia when I hear this song specifically. I always remember pulling up to his apartment and him pulling the tape out of his backpack. lol
Love the 1st part of the song from 0:01 to 0:39 seconds. So hypnotic.
Word, can’t stand the distorted bits
@@OwenAllRound average pop listener when they hear a distorted guitar for 2 seconds
@@Sticknub the chords themselves follow the most generic pop based pattern
@@Sticknub love a whole range of different music but Weezer i'd class as pop
@@OwenAllRound Weezer was most definitely not pop before 2001, do they have a few pop songs after their second album? Yeah. But this one isn't pop at all just because it follows a generic chord progression. That's like saying that Johnny Cash is pop because he uses popular chord progressions, that isn't what defines a genre of music
There's a universe where Matt doesn't leave and Weezer becomes the greatest rock band ever.
Yes. The famous physicist Sean Carroll would agree with you as he is a proponent of the “many worlds interpretation” of quantum mechanics which posits that there are likely an infinite number of worlds/universes where every outcome is realized.
I LOVE the fact that Weezer was one of the inspirations of one of my favorite Japanese bands, Asian Kung-Fu Generation! At one point during AKFG’s 2013 tour, they had the former bassist of Weezer, Matt Sharp, appear as a special guest as they performed a cover of one of their songs, “Only In Dreams”! I found that towards the end of their cover, you can hear them sing the intro notes for “Undone”! I think it’s very amazing! 🥰
holy shit I forgot about this song, it's so good.
Yes sirrr
Welcome back
I shall reply to this comment so that you will be reminded about this song hehe
lol
This is literally the most fun song to yell the lyrics as loud as i can when I'm drunk.
😂😂😂
hahaha just what I thought
Damn right, I'm doing it right now
yup absolutely true
Why need to be drunk to do that? 🤔🤔🤔
If you think there's something weird with this video, that's beacause there is. It's a slowed down version of a sped up version. That's why they are in slow-motion AND keeping with the timing. Just a curious fact.
Probably supposed to feel off
+Daniel FN Speed it up to 1.25 on TH-cam and everything looks a little more 'right'!
it's a common technique, for example Yellow - Coldplay
Haha I did notice the drummer's form was kind of messy and hurried-looking, but that would explain it.
+Daniel FN Huh. Very interesting!
This os the coolest garage band video of alltime by a great band.
This is iconic. Like who thinks of a melody like that. It was so new.
The riff is literally sanitarium by metallica lol
😂 I just read this in an article I searched up because this song popped up on the radio and I was like why is sanitarium in a different tuning what is this, then I realize it’s fucking weezer lmaoo. > “‘The Sweater Song’ was the first Weezer song I ever wrote, back in 1991,” Cuomo says. “I was trying to write a Velvet Underground-type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that riff. And it just feels so classic to me, even now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you’re just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn’t until years after I wrote it that I realized it’s almost a complete rip-off of ‘Sanitarium’ by Metallica.
But wow I really like it actually given it a full listen.

guys I never listened to weezer always just thought they were a bad band... I'm just now discovering the wonder of their music... this is a great time for me
Welcome to the sanctuary then man enjoy
listen to madness
Hell Yeah!!
They are a bad band, but they’re also a fantastic band. They suck and they rock
Niccarus why is that
3:11 drummer twerking
Director: Sit down, what you doing?
Drummer: “I Guess You Guys Aren’t Ready For That Yet. But Your Kids Are Gonna Love It.”
Most underrated comment on TH-cam.
I dig the movie reference
@@nonanon666 you're goddamn right
Epic Marty McFly reference!!!🤘🔥
"The Blue Album" had some absolute bangers, aside from the popular favorites (Undone, Buddy Holly & Say It Ain't So) my personal jewel off that album is Only In Dreams, especially towards the end when it goes off the rails
Still loving this in 2020! Not loving 2020 though
I like the twist on a generic comment. 👍

2:17 = pure happiness. This whole album takes me back to the days of Mario Kart on SNES with my friends, and dreaming about that girl in my 7th grade math class.
reminds me of super mario kart on my snes too. but nothing ever happned in 7th, 8th, and right now, 9th.....maybe a little in 8th but whatever
Me too!!
I'm listening to this in 2024, and this still holds up better than anything on Top 40 today. Facts 💯
Big facts
Love Weezer. Thanks to my son, who listened to this band in high school. I would not have listened to them if it wasn't for him. He's grown now with two kids.
Miss Lady they are great and you no the difference between good and trash
