I actually sat in a radio station waiting room with a young fella with weird hair back in ‘81 or so. I was there to interview for a DJ gig (I wound up being hired by the other major rock station in the market), and he was there to plug (in person) this Dr. Demento cut called Another One Rides the Bus. (That station played the single, but passed on me; the other station hired me, but refused to play Weird Al. The takeaway? Weird Al is known to the cognoscenti as one of the most creative artists of his generation, and I use a public platform to comment on him. Oh, and neither radio station exists in the same form it did. Oh - and just two years older than he, I couldn’t even think about doing that kick even as a one-take.)
I've watched this four times now trying to figure out which one was Weird Al, then I realized that he is a part of all of us and we are all a part of him.
If the title hadn't said "starring Weird Al Yankovic", and you had simply told me that's what Rivers Cuomo looks like these days, I would have believed you.
It honestly didn’t click in my head at first that Weird Al was supposed to be in the video so I was just kinda sitting there listening and scrolling through the comment section until I realized that was Al in the video not Rivers.
I heard an interview with Weird Al- that guy is amazing! He is super smart, graduating from high school and college early/young. He was called weird by other students, but he embraced that- making all of us who often feel weird to have someone to whom we can feel a connection. Also-super talented musically, his lyrics are so clever, and he doesn’t look like he aged a day.
When people say 'think of a great artist' from the 1980s, 90s, or 2000s, Weird Al is not usually one of the names that comes to mind. Yet, for literally decades, he has entertained us with his wit, ear for detail, ability to transform a song into something funny (and often relevant), and as this video shows, he has a pretty damn good singing voice too! All hail WAY! Perhaps the most underrated singer of the past thirty-five years has been hiding in plain sight.
one of my favorites was his parody of american pie, set to star wars episode 1. stunning vocal control, cosplay master, and just a damn fine fellow all around
@@ghomerhust a hundred percent Fun fact. I remember watching the VH1 behind the music that was from the early 2000’s and he said he’s a vegan and does a lot of clean living with no alcohol so I bet that’s what it is
Weird Al I think debuted his first full album close to 1979 or 80 and he has really not left the public consciousness since then. Plus has had whole hit Albums into the 2000's! Most straight serious bands or rappers can't even say that, incredible!
Even better, I think, ( and correct me if wrong), his actual most successful album in that whole almost 40 years has been Mandatory Fun. Which is insanely late in to any career to have maybe your biggest success. The dude is funny and creative and that's appealing in every decade.
I was six or seven and had three records to my name: a McDonald’s promo record that played 2/3 of the Big Mac jingle (the promo was that the record that play the entire thing was the winner), the Ewok celebration song from Star Wars, and Weird Al - Eat It. Yet somehow the guy looks younger than present day me. 😂
At first I was like Weird Al pretending to be Rivers was a waste of Weird Al but then the weird dancing happened and I was like... THIS. This is the content I came here for.
Acting like a goofball for 3 seconds for the sake of the video doesn't change the audio. It's not a parody, but an actual good rendition of the song. Think of what you'd hear in your car if you were to download it to iTunes.
I got all beat. I was in high school when "My Bologna" and "Another One rides the Bus" first came out 40 years ago. They were so acclaimed our main radio station gave them air time with the "real" rock.
No one is commenting how just how good this remake really is. Toto's original is a masterpiece of songwriting and Weezer does their own take while paying respect to the original. That song came out when I was eight and was one of the first singles I ever bought. On a 45 record. Oh, and Weird Al is a living legend too.
Yeah I remember I went on a road trip to the coast with my gf a couple days after this was released and everyone thought it was such a jam that we played it probably a dozen times on the drive there alone.
As much as I love his parodies. I finally get to hear W.A.Y. showcase himself in a way that's uniquely personal. No fluff or special stuff. Just real music and talent. Love it! Play it again Al.
Weird Al is a good enough singer and musician that he could have been a relatively successful serious musician... instead he applied his sense of humor and wit to it and became an insanely long lived and successful parody musician who was not only able to hold his own through changing technology, but carries appeal across generations. He's probably unappreciated for his genius... but it took some incredible genius to manage to accomplish that.
Some people are socially awkward to the point that they are more successful using a "persona" rather than trying to be themselves out there. I've always wondered if that was it with him.
I would be surprised to hear that ANY major musician is not using a persona. After all, it's pretty much all entertainment, especially when you get to the national/international stage. Their people have to design/control everything for publicity purposes.
UHF taught me that adults can be grown kids and amusing one's self is very important to deal with life's day to day challenges. The dumbest movie I quote on a daily basis. Pure genius to be that off the wall and right on point.
in my opinion, you can't beat TOTO. but if anyone were going to do a cover, i'm glad it was Weezer / Weird Al, they did a good job. they didn't try to re-invent the wheel. they just stayed true to the song and, as a HUGE Toto fan, i am pleased.
Salty Sugar Plum Ha! Toto sucks! They take themselves way too seriously; Weezer has just the right attitude... Jeff Porcaro was a great drummer, and a great dude, though. This is much better than the original song...✌️
Agreed. I don't mind reinterpreting a beautiful song if the reinterpretation is beautiful. But if you can't make it even more beautiful, just sing it and play it well, as Weezer and Al do here. Al exaggerates but Africa will do that to a person.
I'll be perfectly honest: It took me half the song before I realized Wierd Al was actually the lead singer. I kept waiting for him to make a "guest appearance". He looks so different in this video.
Shawn Elliott sane here. It wasn’t until the second verse chorus when his movement was getting goofier that I was like “oh, that’s been him this whole time.” Well played Weird Al 👍🏽.

Weird Al's awesome!

Weird Al has the ability to make the entire comment section of a youtube video genuinely positive and uplifting. Weird Al has a universal "watching-a-kitten-sleep" effect on the entire human race. Send this man to the Middle East.

He would probably get killed for being a devout Christian.
Or we could just stop blowing up the Middle East 🤷🏻♂️

Pretty sure he's an immortal.
And oddly, Al got younger than he was when he started in 1979.

EDIT 2: There's also the possibility that _maybe_ he puts Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil on his skin after every shower. That _will_ keep skin from aging as much.
Vegan? I thought he was a vegetarian.

Oh - and just two years older than he, I couldn’t even think about doing that kick even as a one-take.)
wow lake como, ryan belle, patricia wilkinson, and scott shiner are so good
