- Ducati XDiavel is marketed as a 'Sports Cruiser' and after riding and loving the new Triumph Rocket 3 I thought I would try the competition! But is is better than the Rocket 3?

I've moved the foot pegs right back to the rear position (there's a Ducati kit) which has really transformed the whole riding experience , I would say this an essential change. It's also help the lower back pain. I'm also fitting a quick shifter and a Corbin seat. I absolutely love it and feel like a proper tough guy!! I'll report back on the quickshifter and the Corbin seat.
Agreed, putting on the midsets makes it a lot more comfortable for me as well. I have the "short" seat and with a 29 inch inseam both feet are down flat (unusually). With a mini-fairing up front, windspeed on the freeways is no longer a problem either. It takes some effort, but going up Angeles Crest is fast and so much fun.
@HahrtDood Some people don't mind, but I never got comfortable it was such a stretch to the pegs. On the X the regular bars are a bit of an issue at really slow speeds (non-countersteer) as well. It's just a long gas tank. Ducati has longer bars but I'm leaving that alone for now.

Tested rode the Ducati X couple of years ago. Was impressed with its performance, but like Chops, I've been on superbikes so long, just could not make the jump to being stretched out. Great bike! Chops this was one of your best reviews 👍👍

Great work chopsie. I test drove an older model last year and it was a good ride. Loads of torque which is what I want. I just ended up buying a gen 3 busa last week however in silver and loving it!! That engine is killer.

After my MT10 I thought it was time to "grow up" a little as 52 and bought the Diavel 1260.
After a while I was hitting almost the same speed and riding style as before and dragging
pegs so I traded it it to a bike more capable, the Tuono 1100 Factory ; )

@@christianandersson2106 Hi, the bike is taller than the Diavel , it’s better built than the Ducati.
Only faulty item was a paint defect on the wheels which were replaced under warranty.
It’s 3 years old now and the quick shifter is starting to play up, it’s going in for its service next month, so maybe they can sort it.
It’s covered 11,000 miles from new.
Sold my Tuono for a lZ900RS and loving the more relaxed riding, though i still have a Z H2 for a bit of naughtiness now and again. Great video, and you're H2 is bloody amazing.

Beautiful looking machine that isn't it Chopsy, especially in that paint scheme. Just found it so darned uncomfortable on anything over a 30 minute ride....mind you the same goes for my Panigale and I love that thing!! Great vid as ever mate, thanks for uploading....

As someone who rode only Harleys for years and years then switched to a 2013 Diavel, I'm amazed to hear how you talk about it at motorway speeds. When I first bought mine, I road for about two hours at roughly 75-80 mph (120-128 kph) at wasn't uncomfortable at all. I honestly think something might be off with the bike you were on, I don't have nearly that much vibration regardless of speed. Since then I've mostly done shorter trips (less than an hour one-way), but have never had any issues with comfort. It might be a difference in years though, one big difference I've noticed, sometimes neutral on mine can be a huge pain to find.
I'm 45 and rode sports bikes only but made the jump to the xdiavel s and so glad I did. I never want to get off it! It's a bike that does it all and so cool to connect my Bluetooth headphones to it and cruise along with tunes controlled by the switch gear. And try the Ducati power launch its a riot if you can hang on haha nothing will touch you off the line. Great vid

I had the 2015 Diavil, stunning bike, but a few foibles, kick stand sensor faulty, fuel gage sender unit the same, remote key fob the same, HT leads the same, the indicator switch fell off. On the autobahn the mirrors fold in at 135 mph and no amount of tightening helped. The foot pegs dragged sometimes when cornering.
So a crap bike then.....no it was like a beautiful stunning but temperamental woman, loved the bike, most of the faults were in the first 2 years. Of ownership, the last 3 years it was reliable. Changed it 2 and half years ago for the Tuono (which has proved to be beautiful and reliable) and don’t regret it.
One interesting fact, on the autobahn, over a 115mph, the air box wails like a demon, it does sound like the devil !
Would I but it back, yes but don’t tell the wife !

Great review Chopsy! Would be good if you could review the regular Diavel. Doesn't have the feet forward position and a bit more ground clearance than the X .
2017 XDS owner with termi's and some other mods here - They're incredible machines and every ride is an 'event' when you're on one. For me personally they are extremely comfortable (pot-holes aside), and my Mrs states that the vibrations are less on back than my old monster. I love it, but struggle with the impracticalities (living in central London).

There’s omitted options with the X Diavel, you can choose normal feet down position. There’s still the 1260 Diavel (no X).
Termignoni do a full system for the Diavels, which unleashes the voice. For chaps our size, there’s also a taller Ducati Touring seat, which saves your bollox being thrust into the tank.
I have an earlier 1200 Carbon version with Termis 😃

I test rode both and went for the rocket 3 R, never get tired taking off on the lights, and although heavy it’s still great fun to hustle. Either way it’s just glorious to have the choice, so many glorious bikes out at the moment, it’s a golden age before we start going more electric.

I agree with all the points you mentioned. Owned this baby for a couple of months, none other bikes make me feel cooler. It’s hard to describe but I’d say I feel like a bad ass when sitting on this bike.

I never fancied the XDiavel because of it being ‘too’ cruisery so I bought the Diavel 1260S. What a bike! You’re right about feeling fantastic on it. Every time I go out on it I feel like a real ‘biker’, more so than when I go out on the Z H2 or my GS. It just makes me feel .... cool? I find it not the easiest bike to ride and I changed the seat to make it a little more comfortable. You’re right about the switchgear - it’s awful (sorry Ducati). It has no wind protection so if you go above 70 mph (not that I ever would!) it becomes a fight to hold on and going out on a windy day is a challenge!! That all being said, it’s a cool bike and I love it!
Nice review. It's a very cool bike, a real looker. Just not sure if I could cope with the forward pegs. I think I'd go for the mid peg Rocket & make it a project to lighten it as much as poss.

I own an XDiavel and a Rocket R, I’d say the Ducati is the quicker bike, with better handling, but the Rocket is smoother and more comfortable..👍
Great video! Having just watched your Rocket videos, it sounded like the Rocket stole your heart just a little more... Also, I think the fit and finish on the Rockets might be slightly better (pillion foot pegs and internal wires clinch it for me).
But then I would be biased, because I’m waiting (im)patiently for my Rocket 3R Black 😬

It's a beautiful piece of engineering and it's a surprise it can handling like it does but ultimately I'd take one of today's super nakeds for less weight and more comfort. Triumph Speed Triple, Aprillia Tuono v4, KTM SDR, Ducati v4 SF etc. All capable of cruising in comfort and providing sport bike levels of speed and handling.
How do you figure the APrillia Tuono v4 has great comfort? It looks like you are bent over in a typical sports bike immensely painful riding position to me....

I prefer the the Diavel 1260S but the XDiavel is an absolute beauty I completely understand why people go for that. I just prefer chain over belt and foot begs mor underneath instead of out front. And I prefer the engine tune on the 1260S it’s smoother with less vibration and more linear power delivery the X has peak torque way down low which is very attractive for a-lot of riders. I’d definitely go with the 1260S for 2022 with the brushed steel black and yellow accents. The X is more cruiser and the 1260 is more sporty. I bet you would prefer the Diavel 1260S

I’m a young strapping lad and I would absolutely love to have this bike with some thunderous Termi’s. Shame they’re out of my budget!
Had a Street Triple RS. Sold for a Diavel. Owned for 6 months, sold and got another ST RS. Grunt is nice, but not at the expensive of that top end rush
The Akra exhaust makes a big difference in enjoyment. It should be mandatory on these bikes. Was it in touring mode or sports mode because it “seems” you were in touring mode. And yeah, that also makes a huge difference. Good review!
After many reviews about this bike finally LCR gave me what i was looking for. I love the smoothness of my H2SX way too much to switch to a vibrating cruiser. Really wanted to test ride this one but i think i'll give up on it .
What about the non-X simple Diavel? Doesn't that have regular foot position?

Going from sportsbikes to having feet forward seems like a big change. Never felt like I had control. Maybe the Diavel (not XDiavel) with its foot positions is a more natural progression for a sports rider.
As I get older, cruisers appeal more. I would like a Honda Rebel 1100 DCT. Fast enough and a good handler. This Diavel looks so cool, though.

It will have a counter balancer, it's not terrible but just something to be aware of. Not as refined as the new 1290 KTM vtwin for example
What microphone are you using?
I hv a X Diavel S , I find it easy to ride handling it just does it for the machine it is , I find using ride modes to suit what ya doin on the day but big V twins will always hv that vibration ay , Just find that gear n rev to suit , I also hv 2010 streetfighter s , 748R 2002 , But the Diavel makes me laugh at what it does n how it performs ,Thanks for ur content ,Awesome ,Cheers from Australia
I deliberated, and deliberated Chopsy and got a ex demo Rocket 3R, same price as a brand new ‘Dark’, I find the mid pegs work way better and sportier feeling on the 3R and support the back better on the bumps, and its suspension is great. Recall you rode the GT, try the R, much sportier feeling.. I almost didn’t get the Rocket after trying the GT.. R way more involved and better riding triangle..
Yes (a lot) heavier than the Diavel but that torque and presence of the Rocket and long servicing.., and don’t regret the decision 8) lot of Diavel reviews have the suspension too hard on longer rides and I found it a bit hard like my old Octane. You don’t have to ring the Rocket out like the Diavel and Rocket is less a hooligan.. I ride all sorts of roads following all sorts of bikes, ride to its weight and very rewarding.. and you get used to its weird slow speed behaviour, big rear tyre feel the same, but didn’t want a bone shaker and Rocket less vibey..If I didn’t have the Rocket I’d be on a Diavel (not XD).. good post on the tyres, Cobras okay but hoping Avon do something a wee bit sportier, I guess weight again the limiting, can the XD lean as much as the Diavel? How would you compare Chopsy? Get that back to back done Chopsy 😎 and make sure you compare the 3R..
I own a 2006 Ducati ST4S ABS (the last official Sport Tourer that Ducati made) The engine’s from the 996 race bike and has factory Termignoni pipes. I bought it brand new and have only ridden 10,000 miles in 15 years! I suffer from a curved spine (which is worse now than in 2006). I’m 62 yrs old and would like to look cool on a cruiser but sitting bolt upright with feet forward kills me. Having half my body weight on my butt and legs and the other half on my arms and wrists is all my body can stand. Three years ago I installed 2.5 inch Helibar bar risers as my wrists started giving in around the 2 hour mark. My bike’s about as comfy as my body will take and with its age I’d get nothing for it as a trade in, so Ducati it is for now !! 🇦🇺👍

I have ridden the Diavel as my has one i have the R3 GT for mine not much in it but for me in Australia the massive distance the GT is far more comfortable but in saying that the vibration on the Duke is intoxicating lol

I was going to get an xdiavel s when I heard him say at 8:30 "I was on the motorway for 2 1/2 hours and the vibration killed my butt. I would say forget it for long highway rides." I love it versus the rocket 3 gt because the gt seems too heavy and not enough handling for me, but my main usage would be long highway rides. Dang it! Is there such a thing as a gold wing that looks sexy and is fun to drive but isn't a massive huge weighty beast so I can use it in the city and park it in crowded motorcycle parking areas as well?
The rocket 3 is slower over a mile drag Vs Diavel but has more torque in the mid range take off from 50Mph. But it’s mainly due to weight.

I’ve had one for 3 years and agree whole heartedly with your comments. Trail breaking makes a big difference to the running wide issue. there are a number of Ducati seat options that improve ride comfort. I mucked around with the suspension settings and that improved the ride quite a bit as well. It doesn’t like riding below 3000 revs, use a lower gear and it becomes a smooth and non vibey ride. The newer version has lost a bit of torque which a shame as I think that is the most enjoyable element of riding this bike. .
Ah interesting regarding the seat and suspension I didn't play as did like the sporty ride 👍
Increasing the pretension on the rear spring stopped bottoming out on big bumps and kept the sporty ride. It’s by no means perfect, but is a fun ride. 😀

Like 👍 it Chopsy great 👀 looker 👻 but as you say pipes would have to be changed really don’t like the number plate like that , and where we disagree is the bars as I would change the stock one’s and with the cable’s outside it’s sooo much easier so I like them just as they are . Maybe Ducati thought that way too and I want those mirrors for my bike . Cheers : )

I've said it before, I think the Diavel 1260 is a brilliant do it all bike, but I can't handle the forwards foot position of the XDiavel. Not that I can afford either at the moment tho, hahaha.

Need a non-Desmo XDiavel. Desmo is one of the reasons I went with a 2020 Rocket 3 over this. That and I feel the R3 is a more capable distance bike.

If I lived in a major city, as a cruiseposer bike, definitely. I bought a midsize adventure bike 6 months ago and was amazed with the comfort and relaxed feel at speed, compared to my sports bike which feels fast and intense on the same route, amazed. I thought the speedo must be wrong but it isn't and I still think that it is, but it aint. So I'm drawn to a super adventure type thing, although I'm lovin the new GSXS1000S...
I have the new Super Adventure here and it's crazy how slow 85 mph feels on that thing!

Having seen one of these keeping up with fast boys on a circuit I have a lot more respect for cruisers, not my idea of one though. You should try an Indian Chief, more my style and so classy looking.
I love Indians, I really want to get one, but Indians are very low, the turning angle is very low compared to these bikes right? Wonder how they hadle as daily use versus these bikes
