    I own an Xdiavel, a 2017 Rocket 3 Roadster and I test rode the new Rocket the other day. I will say that the XDiavel is more like a sports bike and when you get it over 4 grand in the revs it really starts to kick hard, it corners WAY better than that rear tyre gives it any right to. The old vs new Rocket 3 is a bit of a meh, new the Rocket 3 does feel like its got more kick in the mid range compared to the old one but the engine really wants to be down low all the time. They get a bit buzzy up high, the rocket really likes being in the 2.5k rpm range.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting - so which do you prefer the new Rocket or the XDiavel?

    • @Dark111000
      @Dark111000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMissendenFlyer If you are mainly on open roads and highways, the rocket engine feels more at home than in the city. If you are doing lots of urban riding the Xdiavel is so maneuverable in comparison I would use it.

    Great review as ever. In my experience Diavels are one of those marmite bikes (to look at) but present a real surprise when you actually ride one and get to wind the throttle right open. It’s certainly a barking mad bike and I’m glad that manufacturers step outside of the norm from time to time where most bikes tend to follow a very familiar format. Looking forward to the next review.

    IMO the Diavel and XDiavel are the Kings of cruisers, in 2012 a group of us rode down to Barcelona for the Catalunya Motogp, we met up in Larne (NI) ferry terminal, there was 11 of us all on sports bikes or sports tourers (Fireblades, R1s the smallest bike being a GSX-R750 plus a Hayabusa and Blackbird), the last bike to arrive was a Ducati Diavel ,which had us all exchanging glances ,reading minds probably thinking "this is gonna hold us back", by the end of our first day on the French motorways we were completely proved wrong and even when we left the autoroute south of Lyon the Diavel kept closer to the sports bikes than it had a right to, it really was an eye opener and from your test the XDiavel seems like a step up.

    I don't often disagree with you on a bike review but this is one of the machines I've had a bit of experience on and I have some opinions on yours:
    - Mirrors - You may think they're OK through town etc but wait until you get onto a motorway or get moving on an A road. They vibrate so much that you can barely see behind you!
    - Engine could be smoother - No no no no no. This is a big ol' thumpin' L-twin with 1246CCs. It is not meant to be smooth. It is meant to roar with aggression and constantly remind you that you're on a monster of a Ducati machine. You want smoothness? Ride your STriple! ;)
    - Clutch is a bit stiff - I found this to be an odd statement. I found the clutch to be wonderfully light, especially as it is a hydraulic clutch. Maybe try adjusting it to see if it helps?
    - Exhaust noise - It may sound muted at low speeds/revs but that's good. Makes it neighbourhood/town friendly ;) Get it singing above 3-4k RPM and you'll find it roars!
    Thank you for the video. I look forward to seeing how your thoughts develop on this machine.

      I was going to chime in about v style twins, but you covered it. :) parallel twins are meant to be smooth, v twin type motors are supposed to let you know they are there constantly (within reason).

    • @nicodemus7784
      @nicodemus7784 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the point wasn't that you cant make a v-twin smooth, it was that a v-twin isn't meant to be smooth. just like a parallel twin is meant to be smooth but can be made to not be.

    • @nicodemus7784
      @nicodemus7784 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      so you are claiming that a ducati is smoother than a parallel twin, ok then.....

    • @michaeltelemachus5112
      @michaeltelemachus5112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelhayward7572 You are absolutely correct. This is why they had to rubber mount the Commando engine back in the 60s. The 90 degree v twin has inherent PRIMARY balance but it does suffer from the lesser, secondary vibrations. Anything bigger than about 750cc in a parallel twin usually needs balancer shafts to reduce the vibrations. Unfortunately they add rotating mass, which brings other problems.

    At the time I bought my Diavel one of my friends bought an XDiavel. Like mine his brake reservoir leaked and proved impossible to cure, vibrations caused both our number plates to fall off, cured by fitting Tail Tidies which looked better anyway but worst of all was the front tyres 'square off' very quickly and required more changes than the rear! We found Termi exhausts was a brilliant mod but a cheaper and as good alternative is GPR. I ride 'feet forward' Cruisers and conventional bikes but still screw up putting my feet on Cruiser pegs sometimes riding off after 40-odd years:-) Accurate review as ever thanks TMF.

    • @dadtube1936
      @dadtube1936 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does handle well enough at most speeds but the posture is all wrong for performance and 160 hp. It's the answer to a question no one asked. Mid corner bumps at speed are dangerous on that machine.

    • @big500

      DadTube .some of us need forward controls due to disability... this bike is the perfect answer to a question I asked..

    • @dadtube1936
      @dadtube1936 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@big500 Fair enough but I still don't know what Ducati was thinking. Cruiser riders are afraid of this level of hp and those who are not will use it to generate big speed. Try to take a corner quickly and it becomes apparent that having your ass above the rear axle is less than ideal. Glad you like the bike - ride carefully.

    I agree with your view on the forward controls. After an hour or so on my Harley, my back would be killing me. On my Ural, I can do 12/13 hour rides with no problems because my feet are below me. It is also hard to brace for a big bump with forward controls. Nice review!

    Not a lot going for it for me:
    Useless mudguard on the front - potential radiator grief
    Useless rear mudguard - crap under the seat
    Boring colouring
    horrendous forward pegs - no chance of getting your feet to a safety position quickly when it gets out of shape
    pointless rear seat!!
    And the good points:
    Love the clear bars and "framed" forward view - brilliant for videos
    Love the forward master cylinders, I wonder if the front faces are designed to throw air across the knuckles and thus reduce wind?
    Cool looking exhaust even if its not great sounding
    ITS A DUCATTI!!!!

    Got keyless ignition on my Tiger. Turn the key fob on, tuck it in your inside pocket and forget about it. No keys bouncing up and down scratching stuff. No worry about leaving them in the bike . . . ever. Nice accessory port where the key would normally go. Handy if you have sat nav, phone etc. Electronic steering lock. Get more than 3 or 4 foot from the bike and it shuts down. I keep a normal key with the key for the padlock I use in my garage in my trouser pocket as I need this for the top box. It's no real hardship using a standard key in the ignition but I love my keyless.

No screen, no heated grips, no luggage points, no pillion seat, maybe single seat Morgan or Atom owners might be tempted, but not me! I look forward to understanding the reason that (my projection -) why the 10 buyers a year sposh nearly 21k on this quirky machine. How fortunate are we to armchair ride the thing for free ☺ Can't imagine Mrs Flyer getting excited for a ride. On the rear mudguard. The only thing I disagree on is that battleship grey (aka plastic lego brick grey). Yamaha put the similar grey on the MT-10 and I think the Tracer now, and for me it's probably the worst thing to happen to bikes in the past ten years. The grey here isn't quite as godawful as the Yamaha version but it still looks pretty plasticky and nasty. A few shades darker and it would be the Mad Max goods.

    Love your blogs, you mention seating in every video ( quite correctly )..... Could you set up camera , albeit very briefly, to show you sat on it ,( on side or center stand) so we can appreciate the leg position, stance , better. With a bike such as this, this would be very important.
    Keep up the great vlogging! Robbie, expat in Bulgaria

      Yes, the Triumph edges it and actually looks better value for an over £20k motorbike. The Ducati is great, but is way too expensive......£18 tops, imo. The Triumph seems more like a bike from the future, a modern day Akira or Tron bike you can go out and buy

      Yeah, the color really is a miss on this one. Metallic candy red or metallic amethyst blue would make this bike look 5x better.
      Personally, I'd probably love metallic emerald green the most but that's just the Kawasaki fan in me talking. lol
      But yeah, needs a hell of a lot better paint than this one for sure, especially for that kind of money. The price tag is what it is because I suspect the bike is aimed at outlaw-wannabe male celebrities to use for their public appearances since it's far too impractical for us mere mortals. Can't deny its beauty though, but that's purely subjective. And the belt drive is a nice touch.

    I see another comment likened this beast to Mike Tyson; fair comparison. But, I was thinking it’s closer to Eric Scott “Butterbean” Esch. Why? Well, the ol’ Butterbean could deliver a knockout punch outta nowhere and, from all accounts, he’s a gentleman too. Hey, if a bike’s designed to be a celebrity it’s fair to compare it to other celebrities, right? Hmmm, wonder what a Rowan Atkinson would look like . . .

    That little instrument display looks like a bus ticket to me.
    I'm in two minds with this one, firstly the price, it's not priced to sell is it ? It is definitely in the higher income bracket for those who can afford more than most. The look of the machine tends to make the rider feel cool, so an ego boost and it has a high 'pose factor' too.
    Having said that it still handles very well and is after all a Ducati so has a fair bit of credibility and not many Ducati's these days are aimed at commuters are they ?

    I really really wanted to buy this as I think it's probably the best looking motorcycle in the market. I've always had inline 4 bikes and when I test rode it, I just didn't like the way the engine sounds and feels. Handling was also a bit rough and I felt that I had to fight it coming out of round abouts.

    Looks absolutely great & a very good review as ever. Although I don't think I'm ready for a cruiser as I just can't cope with the peg position so I would have to move them & great that you can. I'm sure you'll get used to the original position but it instinctively doesn't feel right or comfortable imo when I've tried cruisers before. Great to get your insights on the X. looking forward to your upcoming videos. I think your initial comments are spot on. I purchased the 2017 year model with the addition of the comfort seat which has a backrest for the pillion and I ride it all day (I interchange the standard and comfort seat depending on where im riding, it literally takes seconds for the change). Reading some of the comments, there is a Krieger converter kit that bolts under the passenger seat enabling you to attach 50 litres of luggage if you want to take longer trips. I've subsequently added heated grips that are controlled via the menu button and displays the heat setting through an icon on the main display and moved the pegs to the closest setting. Darren, I had a similar experience with the suspension. I've added pretension to the rear spring and wound back the rear damping 1 turn from the factory setting and its made a huge improvement without compromising handling albeit it is firm. I find the bike easy to clean and haven't experienced any vibration issues with the mirrors at freeway speed. I'm still learning which combination of electronic controls and suspension set up works best for me. I find the throttle control at low revs smoother in the sport mode. The other bike I considered purchasing was the Rocket 3. Looking forward to your review on the updated model which looks amazing. The X puts a huge grin on my face every time I ride it.
