i love super paper mario i have played it so many times and i have lot of nostalgia for this game because it was one of the first video games i ever played
You could say that to Galacta Knight too, but he's a Meta Knight skin, so yeah since Piranha Plant got a TTYD reference in it's moveset, Mr L needs to be Luigi's skin in the game.
Y’all need to go play Project M then. They have Mr. L as a costume for Luigi (even though they look nothing alike what a weird move) along with team color versions. It’s super sick.
Yeah, one of the reasons why I replay so much is to see how the dialogue differenciates depending on who you are controlling at the time. While this is nothing new, in the previous games the partners did the talking and the other characters didn't usually directly address them, in SPM however, most of the NPC dialogue changes depending on who you have out, which is unique attention to detail.
@Charlotte Banister I don't think Tippi's dialogue is bad per se, but I prefer to see Peach or Bowser commenting on the scene with their unique dialogue rather than have someone do the talking for Mario.
Also fun fact: apparently a lot of the characters in SPM are “blocky“ and geometrical in reference to computers and digital stuff in general. That’s also why Mario‘s turn-3D-ability, when used, looks like someone selecting multiple files on a windows desktop with the mouse. So basically the design “theme“ is analog (paper) vs digital (computer stuff).
I also figured they were blocky because in mathematics, dimensions are represented most typically in square, cubed, or tessarect (hope I spelled it right) form
as a teenager learning computer science at school, I've grown to appreciate this game so much more now that I have context for so much of the game's apparent weirdness
@@jamieyakimets839 If you refuse to receive the first Pure Heart from Merlon several times, you're awarded a game over before you can even control Mario
@@StarStreamVee and because the game hasn't saved, the file says "back to the start!" When you fail there any you get to sit through the entire intro cutscene again
9:47 I wholeheartedly disagree. I play as Bowser as often as I can because I never know quite when a story segment will happen, and Bowser just provides the funniest dialogue in the group when one does.
That OST man. So many themes I always go back to, not just for nostalgia or for it actually being jams (which they absolutely are), but because of the genuine emotions a lot of a the music was able to bring out, even listening to it outside the games context.
The final boss theme, “The Ultimate Show”, is one of my favorite songs period. Not only is the title good (show and not showdown), and not only is the song a remix of Dimentio’s and Mr. L’s theme, but it also SLAPS HARD, MAN!
The only complaint I have about this game is that we never find out who Mr. L is. He gets killed off in Chapter 6 and then Dimentio mistakes Luigi for him in Chapter 8.
I bet they had a connection between the two planned, like Mr. L use to be Luigi's room mate (as shown in some concept art) but it just got left on the cutting room floor.
It would have gone a long way just to make the 3D/2D flip transition happen faster and removing the timer for it. I can't think of a single gameplay reason for the timer. Plus, the ticking sound gets annoying real fast.
@Loogi 12 yeah i agree it was as a punishment for abusing it too much. however, it's only a minor punishment so you can still get on with stuff if you really have to, it won't kill you unless you're really low
"When you finish the game, you just forget about all the mediocrity." I... Wow. It is spot on, isn't it. Super Paper Mario is indeed my favorite one of the bunch, but I actually forgot about the dubious game design. To be fair though, I personally love the resetti like please spam. It isn't so far from the literal hundred "I love you" text bubble in Thousand Years Door. Oh also, I really, *really* love Mimi's mansion concept. The ruppee grinding always bring me joy.
I found the 100 "I Love You"s funny but I hated the repeating please's because the game doesn't tell you in any way that you have to repeat it so it is far too easy to move on and then get stuck until 2 hours pass.
@@Redpoppy80 If you finished Chapter 5 though, it's pretty clear it was to establish that the Cragnons are pretty much annoying jerks and while what the Floro Sapiens did was bad, it was retaliation of what the Cragnons did.
that reminds me of sonic adventure 2. I played it as a kid, and once I got to that (in?)famous final cutscene, I forgot all about the bullshit level design, questionable voice acting, bullshit level design, odd dialog timing, bullshit level design, uninteresting iteration on the knuckles formula created by the first sonic adventure game, bullshit level design…
This game is incredible. I only really played this game when I was about 5, back when it came out, but I remember loving the story, loving the gameplay, solving puzzles with the help of my sister who is brighter when it comes to puzzles. I absolutely loved the looming doom of the black hole, and my god there were so many memories when I went back to it. It was like going through your old Minecraft worlds on the xbox 360, each building and each area has memories tied to it. Im going back to TTYD and replaying that, so far its as good as I remember, but I dont think it will be quite as good as going back to SPM.
The story, characters and settings in my opinion are good. I especially liked the fact you can get bad endings by...not wanting to save the world, or doing stupid things. This game straight up fought the "but thou must" trope to the bitter end. It lost because a game ending with a main protagonist denying breathing support in a vacuum would be silly, but it tried, damn it.
It was an obvious joke. With an excessive meta-analysis you could say it meant Mario was ready to call it quits once he saw space. He's like "NOPE! I didn't need one in Super Mario Galaxy, and I don't need one here!"
Look, I understand people missing a traditional rpg battle formula and seeing this game as the start of a slippery slope, but this is by far me and my siblings' fav Paper Mario game (and one of our favorite Mario games ever). The story is amazing (I'd fawn over the backstory build-up and Dimentio, but you said it, not me), the gameplay is still fun (like Mario Bros 2, but with rpg items), and and it's an integral part of our childhoods. 10/10 would recommend
I feel like the last two paper mario tried to make us feel for the partners (the sticker and huey) the same you feel with tippi. But not at all, tippi was such a good character with and interesting backstory.
@The Good Demon to be honest she felt rather... bland, i could at least identify a personality in kersti (even if it wasn't a good one), huey and olivia. She comes across as your typical mysterious character, and the only reason i do remember her is because no other character in the series is similar to her
I think Tippi's biggest flaw is in her design. She isn't very emotive and she isn't really meant to be a comedic character. So there are times where she can feel bland. But her character really starts shining from when you rescue her in chapter 3 and after chapter 6, as she slowly regains her memories and is more open to the gang.
@@johntastisk4200 I agree with you! She actually has personality and actually some funny moments even though she isn't comedy relate (I will never forget how she always roasted some of the enemies xD) But yeah, her design isn't expressive with makes her unemotive especially compared to the other partners in the other Paper Mario games.
The story is the best part about the game. As for the gameplay, it's not the best. But it's average and I do like that it's an Side Scrolling/Action RPG rather than traditional RPG. Even though I vastly prefer the series as an traditional RPG. But this is an exception.
Whenever i see this game, i can't help but think of Zelda 2 The Adventure of Link, it may just be the whole factor of being a platformer with RPG elements, and i know they're very different, but there's also a lot that Super Paper Mario takes from that game.
Agree with that comparison, but I feel like this game also has correlation with Metroid Fusion and Sonic Adventure 2. For Fusion, it was a game that came after what was considered a masterpiece that did something totally different. For SA2, it’s reputation, it’s either considered the last good one or the first bad one.
As someone who has 100% the game, cards and all. Its beautiful, storywise it's a masterpiece, but combat wise its definitely not the greatest. I love this game to death though and forever will.
It's kinda like how the Koopalings were once some of the most requested characters to return, which they did in NSMBW to great applause, only to then become "overused" in recent games. They're fine roster filler for Kart, Party, and Sports, but their recent RPG presence in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam and Paper Mario: Color Splash has contributed to their more polarizing reputation today.
so what we need is: gameplay, world and character design from TTYD A story like super The graphics/engine from colour splash or the origami king NOTHING from sticker star and boom the perfect Paper mario game (feel free to add something from 64)
For most I agree, but highly disagree with the graphics and engine from Origami King. I do not like the whole world being made of paper and cardboard. To this day I wish the English localization of the game had never titled the game "Paper Mario", and instead gone with Mario Story.
From 64 I would say varied and iconic scenarios/sequences, such as the whole Tubba Blubba sequence where you have to sneak around the place, eventually finding what you need, getting discovered, and then needing to GET THE HELL OUTTA THERE.
Here is why this one is my favorite: The gameplay is pretty good in my opinion, I really like the combination of RPG stats and platforming The enemies and NPC’s are all super unique and there is only 1 toad in the game! The soundtrack is phenomenal and easily the best in the series with bangers like the ultimate show The story is also at its best with a story so complex, it made Miyamoto not want a story in the next entry The antagonist has an actually goal that isn’t world domination, where he wants to end all worlds by destroying them because the world took his loved one ( which is your companion ) so the main antagonist basically wants to commit suicide and take everything out with him And the characters are super likeable like Luigi who is at his best in the paper Mario franchise as he is an antagonist for one part of the game, and a playable character in the other, O’chunks and Mimi with their weird yet charming personalities, Dimentio the minion that you get pretty weird vibes from until you discover he is the surprise villain. And much more! I really recommend this game and I’m super excited for oragami king! Anyways thanks for reading!
I agree with you for the most part, but I personally don't find the music to be as excellent like you proclaimed it to be. It's not a *bad* soundtrack, but it pales in comparison to the other Paper Mario games.
To me, the plot of the story (just the ENDING alone) eclipsed every prejudice I had towards super paper mario not being a classic rpg like the original and thousand years door Also can we address that Mario and friends get sent to actual hell in this game! that level of undertone creepiness is reserved for Kirby!
This game has lore so deep, you would never even realise without going through *literally* everything in the game. It's a shame we'll never know the full story since theories on this game are dead.
Pretty much everything about the game was figured out, including Shadoo and the Pixl Queen. Dimentio is the only missing link, but that's probably intentional.
This is, no doubt, my favorite paper mario. The soundtrack and story are just amazing! There are so many beautiful and emotional moments. The fact that u have bowser peach and luigi as party members its just cool. And the gameplay, even tho i can understand why some people could not like it, i have no problem with it, its fast easy and fun.
Funny story, When I was 10 or so, because I was a big Mario fan, I got this game as a present since the game cover had Mario and friends on it. I was super excited because I got a new Mario game for my Wii. Excited, I turned on the Wii, put the game disk in and started playing the game. All good an dandy until I realized... I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND ANY WORD IN THE GAME! That was because the game I got was actually on ENGLISH, and back then I didn't know english (I'm from south America). So, there I was, playing Super Paper Mario, a Story based game, in a language I didn't understand. But since I was a child (a stupid one I tell you), I still played the game. So I kept playing, roadblock after roadblock, part of the game I couldn't get through because I didn't know english. I literaly used a english dictionary in one part! (When the Hammer Thingy asked a question about what word I like or something in the prehistoric chapter). Day passed, Week passed, until I finally BEAT THE GAME. I WAS SUPER HAPPY! I didn't understand why the Bad Guy with a Hat and the Butterfly Thingy was left behind to die but I certainly didn't care. It may be an exaggeration but I say that was one of the acomplishment in my life. In the end, I may have struggled with this game, but it's still one of my favourite game, and I still get salty when someone talk bad about it (even though they may be right).
Bruteforcing my way through RPGs without knowing English is how I ended up learning the basics so many years ago as a kid, and I had a very similar experience with the Super Mario RPG for the SNES, and later the original Paper Mario, I couldn't read any English but still really enjoyed the story somehow, lol!
If you don’t know english, good luck playing video games and youtube is even worse since there usually is no subtitles for spanish and other languages lol
Slight correction: the Catch Cards at the end of the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials actually allow you to inflict double damage against every enemy after obtaining them.
@@borisegelston Yeah, funnily enough, I didn't realize that was what caused the infinite flip time when I replayed the game recently on an emulator. For a while, I was worried that I accidentally activated a cheat or something like that.
I vividly remember the day I watched the preview of the introduction for this game at GameStop. I said to myself: "I NEED THIS GAME", and spent an entire summer doing chores to buy my first Wii system and the game. It was the last time I felt motivated to buy a new Paper Mario game. This is a game I play shortly after completing Paper Mario TTYD. That's how good it is to me. Faults and all.
Completely agree!! I feel like a lot of people just see it as an oversimplified platforming turn for the series, but I love everything around it and feel like more should give it a chance
I liked Super Paper Mario, it was a game where it actually made me feel at times (Lost Odyssey being another notable one for the feels), it knew how to balance the drama with the funny and the gameplay itself was varied enough to keep things interesting. The game I felt was a good balance between easy/sorta hard (never did beat the flopside pit of 100 trials, I just couldn't stand doing it twice) and the worlds were interesting. Honestly a SPM 2 would've been much more welcome than Sticker Star or Color Splash.
The end of Flopside's 100 trials ends with a boss fight against shadowy versions of the 4 playable characters. Pretty cool, but could only beat it by stocking up on literally all the best heals in the game. They do 20 damage per hit, and I think Bowser does 40. Ouch.
I just beaten it! To be honest it is my favorite Mario game. It is extremely deep and awesome!!! It’s all about sacrifices and being selfless even though it is extremely hard too. Plus the ending..... it is bittersweet yet so beautiful. To be honest I felt it aged insanely well! The control scheme with motion controls isn’t too bad and it felt like playing a new game honestly.
I absolutely adore this game! The story, music, and characters are absolutely amazing! It is partially nostalgia that influences my opinion, but I just love it. I also prefer the combat style more, but that’s just me not loving turn based combat as much. There’s also just so much to do, I never really felt bored. (Except the 3 block puzzles lol)
same here! I prefer the combat style too; it just feels more like a traditional Mario game, at least to me. the music and the story will always have a special place in my heart
@@demodragon6426 that is debatable, some people really like the full RPG aspects of thousand year door others (like me) really prefer the RPG-esque style of super, it really depends from person to person
@@DangerouslyStupidGamer I won't deny, I also agree with it, but I saw this guy just going to every comment that was positive with super, and commenting something like "ttyd was better" and I replied to one of those comments with a similar comment like the one I made here, and I just thought that it wouldn't be cool to say that in relation to ttyd and not say that just because someone liked super, and both comments were pretty similar in structure. Shit, this comment got long, sorry
I only noticed that only castle bleck's ost, it reflects the fact that you are running out of time And the best creepy part for me was unlocking luigi, like, imagine my reaction with 10 years finding out that he was depressing on a rock found at the bottom of a lake made of sinner tears (and their hands too) And add to it the music at the bottom of the lake, and you have me with 10 years getting creeped out extremely
You made a typo. *you and literally every person on the internet that doesn't know how to listen to criticism and instead says a game is their favorite no matter what because it's either 1. The first game they played in the series. 2. A game they played way in the past. Or 3. They haven't even played the game and are a sucker for """""underrated""""" games. You're welcome
"The game is pretty easy." *Weeping* I never got past the last level. I kept running out of lives in the last boss battle and gave up... I've never been much of a gamer. Super Paper Mario has left a strange, yet profound impact on me as an adult, though it's been years since I've played it. When exploring Flipside and Flopside, I felt like I was in an ancient, mysterious place. There were random nooks and crannies to explore, where you could find hidden items. I even found a secret pixi whose purpose I never discovered... >:( The game does a good job of making it appear as though there is a lot of lore, maybe more than there really is. One aspect of the game, I don't remember exactly, involves locating members of an ancient tribe, that was cool. I don't know how to describe the feeling this game gave me, "mystery and magic" are two words that come to mind though. I've been chasing that feeling ever since. I just got done playing the game Gris and it gave me a similar feeling, due in part to the geometric art style and level design, but also the fact that the world felt ancient. I think a key thing in what makes a game good, might be how it makes you feel. But then again, Gris was the first video game I've played in years so I don't know much about games...
Its a game that uses very well the misterious and ancient theme, like you said. The desert on the first chapter, the mansion on the second, the ruins of the Floro guys, Hell..., for a 10 yo kid, beating the 100 samurais or the 100 dungeons of the cities felt like a gladiator going through stages of enemies without knowing what happens at the end, what reward Im going to get. Its a wonderful game with a heartbreaking story, has moments that make you cry, laugh or say awww (when the fish in the suburbs has little fishes hahaha) and filled with awesome characters, plus the OST is top tier. Collecting the recipes and the stickers was fun as hell. Truly a masterpiece, the older games of the franchise look as good as SPM or more, but this one has a special place on my heart. And about Gris, I couldnt end the game. For me is incredibly boring hahaha.
This is accurate in every way, especially the scenes where Mario melts into orange sludge and does unspeakable things to Peach's unconscious body in a hospital.
@ClaireSoelberg-op8id It wasn't for a while, at the time, or maybe earlier, the game was quite disliked, as it garnered the Paper Mario title, but played more in line like a normal Mario game.
@a.g.u.2399 You’re right… I guess I’m just puzzled. SO many people claim this game is underrated and forgotten, but that simply is NOT true anymore. Compared to the reception of the newer Paper Mario games (that I’m more nostalgic for tbh) Super Paper Mario is absolutely treasured, and the thousands of people in this comments section are the oblivious proof. I don’t mean to disregard anyone’s positive experience with this game, but the overly vehement “SPM-is-mixed-and-under-appreciated” thing is just getting a bit old. It may have been true once upon a contentious time, but not anymore.
Actually just playing the original Paper Mario for the N64 right now thanks to emulation. Was to young when I had a N64 so I didn't enjoy or really understand even simply RPG. Despite always being a big fan of a lot of Nintendo big franchises I haven't owned a single Nintendo system since the Game Cube. So I have really been missing out on a lot of great games. At least thanks to Emulation I have been able to play all of the NDS titles I was dying to play. And thanks to the Stimulus Check I got I decided to buy a N2DS XL so that I can play the 3DS games I have been dying to play. Bought the 4 games I have most wanted to play which are Pokemon X and Sun as always been a huge Pokemon fan so it's been killing me that I haven't been able to play a single title since Black 2. Also bought Link Between Worlds being a big Zelda fan. And then Fire Emblem Fates. Was thinking about buying Sticker Star despite some saying it's terrible but others have said it's at least a solid game not bad but not great. And it only costs like $10 now so I might do it. Although I might buy some other Mario related 3DS title like Super Mario 3d land or Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World.
Okay, so I’ve always felt like this game was “TTYD 2” more so than PM3. And now that I know that this game was supposed to come out on the GCN as a direct follow up to that game, yeah that makes sense.
SPM is still my second favorite of the series next to TTYD. I get the criticisms, but I always found it an absolute joy to explore the worlds and meet the characters that await you.
I rented this game as a kid and played through it before getting stuck at Mimi’s manor. My sister looked it up, got all the rupees and handed me the controller saying I would like the next part I had nightmares for the next week
11:27 I AM SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED THIS!! I made it to this part in the game, and it's at this point that I began to dislike this game. I finished Chapter 4 (Digi-nerr stuff), then returned the game. One of the few Mario games I've never beaten.
Seeing the ending of Chapter 4 -- where the Cragnons are found out to be actually jerks, being the reason why the water got poisoned and made the Floro Sapien king go mad -- it made their annoying quirks make SO much sense; it's a grey morality chapter, really.
@Blue Fire Is Cold We're they even civil, they seem to be opposites even before -- I can't remember some of the details that may shine the difference between the two peoples like in the Floro Sapien portraits, but it seems the Floro Sapiens were approving of the brainwashing (based on the final portrait) probably because the Cragnons cannot be reasoned with. I think the Floro Sapiens weren't happy that King Croacus became cuckoo though, probably doing something even they weren't tolerating.
@Tom The Fish finally someone outside of me thinks ttyd isnt perfection No seriously its just a formula people got used to and want back thats really it pm origami king seems promising
When I had to go to the hospital for appointments, they had this Star Center in the hospital. It was basically a wii with a bunch of built in games that can be accessible to kids in hospitals. Super Paper Mario was included alongside Mario Party 8 and Shrek the third.
8:14 "This is more character development for Mario than you can find in any other Mario game in the entire franchise." Somwhere, Miyamoto is suffering an aneyurism.
What a coincidence that I am just playing it (it is the first time I play it and I am going to chapter 7) and on TH-cam many videos about the game appear and most of them came out this year xD
I think I still like TTYD's story better, but this game has the best story climax and ending for me. I still loved TTYD's story climax and ending, but this game got very intense in the big finale.
My first paper Mario game, and my favorite. Imagine my surprise when I was a kid, getting hit by the first goomba and not dying in one hit. (Platforming games made me nervous back then, watching speed runners helped me overcome that)
I personally love SPM. It has so much charm. Great writing, great story, great music, great characters, it has it all. The gameplay can be a bit boring at times, but I did really enjoy switching between 2D and 3D. All in all, I think it's very good. I still pretty much only hear positive things about this game from fans. Very rarely do I see someone disliking it.
It's simple. People go in with expectations, get disappointed, ruin the fun for all the others. Opinions are pretty much worthless, that's why everybody shares them so freely.
Strangely for me, I appreciated this game more over time compared to the general reception I guess. Got it around launch when I was 10, put it down and sold it around chapter 3 (I think?) because it just didn't hold my interest, and thought the gameplay was wayyy worse than TTYD's. Bought it on ebay during winter break of my sophomore year of college, gave it a second chance and fell IN LOVE. I'm talking blazed through the story and side missions, even set out to collect all the cards! (Which I burnt out from and quit very shortly after beating lol) Point being, even games you didn't like at first deserve a second look, especially if it's Nintendo.
I did something similar. I got it when I was 10 as well, and I only got to chapter 3 too. Back then I also didn't know about guides so I got confused at the big tree and quit. I came back a few years later with help and oh my god I am so glad I did. Its actually probably my second favorite game I've ever been able to play
"Who's that man you see who grooms his stace so well, the man of mystery, they call me Mr L, who's behind the mask, are you afraid to ask, ride like a hurricane, green thunder in the rain."
Mr l was made from luigi's *darker side and negative emotions.* He seems to resent Mario especially saying that bro bot is his metal brother and that he was going kill mario. He's also flirtatious towards peach and seems to despise normal luigi. Apparently in luigi's diary he has had adventures in the waffle kingdom and is kinda jealous of mario and wishes that he could join him on his adventure. When dimitiono betrays luigi he _literally kills him and sends him to hell._ _And that's the end of mr L_
someone gave me a fake spoiler while i was playing that mr L was actually luigi and i was super bummed out about it before realising it was actually wario
Never played it, so I cant judge. But if there would be a Remake for the Switch, I would give it a shot. Even I have to admit that it is not a clsssic Rpg like the First two is a bit sad for me, but still.
I think it’s good. It’s story is as good as the previous ones. Yeah it’s a different gameplay style, but it’s got the same charm as TTYD. Partners were replaced not only by those pixel guys (who honestly don’t do much) but also by having new player characters including Luigi. And the best part, unique beings, not just toads and Goombas!
I've had a lot of fond memories of Super Paper Mario since it was my first paper mario game. That may just be me speaking with nostalgia glasses, but watching your video really wants to make me play it again.
14:36 I know this is supposed to be a joke, but I genuinely cannot stand the fact that this has _actually_ become the norm. Oh well. At least you offer some Color Splash solace to make up for it.
I'm actually playing through SS again now to see how it holds up after mostly enjoying the original, and I'm still liking it well enough, even if overall CS is the better package. I'd say if someone can stick up for SPM they should at least be willing to give SS another look.
*looks at Fallout 76, Bubsy 3D, The Culling Origins, Aquaman Battle for Atlantis, everything made by Digital Homicide* Are you sure that's your final answer?
This is one of my favorite games ever and I adored it as a kid. Also this is currently the only paper Mario game to have luigi as a main cast member, and he becomes an antagonist and is foretold in essentially the necronomicon to be the harbinger of the apocalypse and becomes the final boss.
SPM is still my favorite paper mario game Its simultaneously the most funny, and darkest mario game. You go through a dating sim with francis, now your in hell being dragged down into a river by dead people. O'chunks is o'chunks, now a civilization of thousands of people have been repaced by an empty void because you werent fast enough Some say its bad just because its different, which is incredibly stupid. It bothers me that Mr. L isn’t a Luigi skin in Smash
indeed
Why would Mr. L be a skin for a character that he has nothing to do with? He should be his own character
You could say that to Galacta Knight too, but he's a Meta Knight skin, so yeah since Piranha Plant got a TTYD reference in it's moveset, Mr L needs to be Luigi's skin in the game.
*Cries in Gooigi*
Y’all need to go play Project M then. They have Mr. L as a costume for Luigi (even though they look nothing alike what a weird move) along with team color versions. It’s super sick.
there actually is at least ONE reason to play as other characters: they have unique dialogue for cutscenes, while mario is a silent protagonist.
and they also are important for puzzles
Plus if you like playing one of the characters and don't mind switching for puzzles only, you can do that too.
@@thecrazedpotatoman it also felt fast enough to switch and do a puzzle and not really notice you had to switch
@Charlotte Banister
I don't think Tippi's dialogue is bad per se, but I prefer to see Peach or Bowser commenting on the scene with their unique dialogue rather than have someone do the talking for Mario.

That OST man. So many themes I always go back to, not just for nostalgia or for it actually being jams (which they absolutely are), but because of the genuine emotions a lot of a the music was able to bring out, even listening to it outside the games context.
Try finding the puzzle with my comment and yours 🔝
I literally get emotional and cry over some of the songs...
The final boss theme, “The Ultimate Show”, is one of my favorite songs period. Not only is the title good (show and not showdown), and not only is the song a remix of Dimentio’s and Mr. L’s theme, but it also SLAPS HARD, MAN!
@The Good Demon just why I cringed so hard!?!?
Just don't listen to River Styx before you go to bed
The only complaint I have about this game is that we never find out who Mr. L is. He gets killed off in Chapter 6 and then Dimentio mistakes Luigi for him in Chapter 8.
I bet they had a connection between the two planned, like Mr. L use to be Luigi's room mate (as shown in some concept art) but it just got left on the cutting room floor.

I'm surprised the jaded and cynical Paper Mario fans don't call SPM the best game in the series purely because of that
I LOVED how unabashedly freaky some of these designs were. Especially spider Mimi and the Jawbus.
To add on to that, Bonechill is a reference to the 12th Circle of Hell with Satan in the middle covered in ice.
@@mantamariana64 Oddly enough Bonechill was one of very few designs I liked. The rest were like they didn't even try.
Good old Mimi the mini virus
Mimi scared the shit out of me when I was a kid
It took me literal decades to realize that she's called Mimi because she can "Mimic" other people.
I wish they made another game like this so they could perfect everything and give it a more consistent formula
A platform RPG would more refined mechanics would be awesome, IMO that could be a better twist than they might be doing now.

This game is incredible. I only really played this game when I was about 5, back when it came out, but I remember loving the story, loving the gameplay, solving puzzles with the help of my sister who is brighter when it comes to puzzles. I especially liked the fact you can get bad endings by...not wanting to save the world, or doing stupid things.
This game straight up fought the "but thou must" trope to the bitter end.
It lost because a game ending with a main protagonist denying breathing support in a vacuum would be silly, but it tried, damn it.
i remember Tippi basically calling Mario stupid and ridiculous if you don't wear the space helmet. love her to bits 😂😂
It was an obvious joke.
With an excessive meta-analysis you could say it meant Mario was ready to call it quits once he saw space.

But not at all, tippi was such a good character with and interesting backstory.
tippi's backstory is good but as a character she's pretty nothing
It’s called SHES A FUCKING BUTTERFLY

Me too.

Your one of the many people, trust me
The story is the best part about the game.
It's like they put zelda 2, paper mario and cave story in a blender together.
I always say it’s the best sequel to Zelda 2 we’ve ever gotten lol

Then color splash came and the whole population of prisma island is toads.
And then origami king came out and everywhere is infested with toads
Also I think a toad was mentioned only once in the game idk
It's kinda like how the Koopalings were once some of the most requested characters to return, which they did in NSMBW to great applause, only to then become "overused" in recent games. They're fine roster filler for Kart, Party, and Sports, but their recent RPG presence in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam and Paper Mario: Color Splash has contributed to their more polarizing reputation today.
I like how toad has taken over the series, I wonder why?
so what we need is:
gameplay, world and character design from TTYD
A story like super
The graphics/engine from colour splash or the origami king
NOTHING from sticker star
and boom the perfect Paper mario game
(feel free to add something from 64)
Music track from sticker star (yes, I thought it had a pretty good soundtrack)
@@sw1shstyx777 I can get behind this, the more jazzy tunes are amazing.
Puzzle mechanics from the origami king
For most I agree, but highly disagree with the graphics and engine from Origami King. I do not like the whole world being made of paper and cardboard. To this day I wish the English localization of the game had never titled the game "Paper Mario", and instead gone with Mario Story.
From 64 I would say varied and iconic scenarios/sequences, such as the whole Tubba Blubba sequence where you have to sneak around the place, eventually finding what you need, getting discovered, and then needing to GET THE HELL OUTTA THERE.
Here is why this one is my favorite:
The gameplay is pretty good in my opinion, I really like the combination of RPG stats and platforming
The enemies and NPC’s are all super unique and there is only 1 toad in the game!
The soundtrack is phenomenal and easily the best in the series with bangers like the ultimate show
The story is also at its best with a story so complex, it made Miyamoto not want a story in the next entry
The antagonist has an actually goal that isn’t world domination, where he wants to end all worlds by destroying them because the world took his loved one ( which is your companion ) so the main antagonist basically wants to commit suicide and take everything out with him
And the characters are super likeable like Luigi who is at his best in the paper Mario franchise as he is an antagonist for one part of the game, and a playable character in the other, O’chunks and Mimi with their weird yet charming personalities, Dimentio the minion that you get pretty weird vibes from until you discover he is the surprise villain.
When it comes to soundtrack, ColoUr Splash is surprisingly top quality - with real instruments to boot. So crisp and clean.

That's amazing! I'm so glad you had fun with it and that it encouraged you to try and learn. Those are the best kinds of Games.

Ouch.

The game does a good job of making it appear as though there is a lot of lore, maybe more than there really is.

This game is nothing like ttyd
SPM is still my second favorite of the series next to TTYD. I get the criticisms, but I always found it an absolute joy to explore the worlds and meet the characters that await you.
Does anyone else feel like half the time you’re not even told where to go, so you have to look up a walk through to figure out where to go?
Yeah I got stuck at one point and stopped playing (I was like 10 or something idk) and now I can't find the disc ;-;
Yeah but that’s what I love about it. Playing for the first time and having to figure out what to do and where to go.
I rented this game as a kid and played through it before getting stuck at Mimi’s manor. My sister looked it up, got all the rupees and handed me the controller saying I would like the next part
I had nightmares for the next week
11:27 I AM SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED THIS!!
I made it to this part in the game, and it's at this point that I began to dislike this game. I finished Chapter 4 (Digi-nerr stuff), then returned the game.
One of the few Mario games I've never beaten.
Seeing the ending of Chapter 4 -- where the Cragnons are found out to be actually jerks, being the reason why the water got poisoned and made the Floro Sapien king go mad -- it made their annoying quirks make SO much sense; it's a grey morality chapter, really.
@@zjzr08 >Chapter 5, 4 is Space
Lol first 2 comments are off?
World 3 is Digi-Nerr
And World 5 is Cragnons
Edit: "Chapter"
I smell a future LP
@Blue Fire Is Cold We're they even civil, they seem to be opposites even before -- I can't remember some of the details that may shine the difference between the two peoples like in the Floro Sapien portraits, but it seems the Floro Sapiens were approving of the brainwashing (based on the final portrait) probably because the Cragnons cannot be reasoned with. I think the Floro Sapiens weren't happy that King Croacus became cuckoo though, probably doing something even they weren't tolerating.
This game is slept on so hard. The gameplay and music is gold IMO
I know right
@Tom The Fish finally someone outside of me thinks ttyd isnt perfection
No seriously its just a formula people got used to and want back thats really it pm origami king seems promising
Ttyd is overatted. I prefer the original and super. The switch one looks good tho
@Cihan what what
When I had to go to the hospital for appointments, they had this Star Center in the hospital. It was basically a wii with a bunch of built in games that can be accessible to kids in hospitals. Super Paper Mario was included alongside Mario Party 8 and Shrek the third.
“Is Super Paper Mario any good?”
Short Answer: Yes. In fact, it’s amazing.
Well I liked that game, whether other people think it’s good or not.

"This is more character development for Mario than you can find in any other Mario game in the entire franchise."
Somwhere, Miyamoto is suffering an aneyurism.
SilverHairedFreak25 Mario has character developement, the horror.
Somewhere in the 80s because after that he just reused the same ol story
What the hell, I looked up “antdude super paper mario” about an hour ago with no results and wasn’t surprised. And now this comes out.
Good thing it's Mayrio Month...interestingly he just uploaded a few days ago too.
What a coincidence that I am just playing it (it is the first time I play it and I am going to chapter 7) and on TH-cam many videos about the game appear and most of them came out this year xD
Short answer: Yes, absolutely.
Long Answer: Super Paper Mario is in such an odd place in the overall serie-
"Ants, my specie"
Hey AntDude how's your uncle, ant man?
I actually didn’t mind the platforming. I’d say this game surpasses TTYD in the story department, although I love both games equally.
Everyone will die and only your brother will live and be tortured.
Luigi: Oikydoky
I’ve been replaying this game since I found my Wii so I got so hyped when I saw the notification for this.
Same
Ditto!
Short answer(imo): yes, it’s one of the most underrated games on the Wii!
My favorite part about this game is the humor. It has some of the best humor in the entire series, without a doubt.
I feel like the story of this game needs to be talked about more its just that damn good
"Who's that man you see who grooms his stace so well, the man of mystery, they call me Mr L, who's behind the mask, are you afraid to ask, ride like a hurricane, green thunder in the rain."
“Am I asomeone’s brother? Eh, who knows.”
Yesss! Friend
Huh, I feel like I've heard it before. Eh, probably some Man on the internet
Juno works with the man on the internet so your fine
People: _show Bug fables_
HK fans: Is this hollow knight?
That’s... not what I thought
I don't think anyone was saying that.
Hollow Knight being my favorite game ever made... no, I did not think that. They look NOTHING alike other than having bugs in it, dunno bout' you.
i'm not even a hollow knight fan (yet) and i'm like this
As a person that OBVIOUSLY hates hollow knight, I don't agree
I’m still mad Luigi didn’t get a Mr. L skins in Super Smash Bros: Ultimate
That's because it would spoil that he is Luigi
greencapzelda
Omg I’m sorry I didn’t mean to spoil endgame
@@joybuzz3r It's alright, I forgive you
greencapzelda
Thank goodness
Wait, why would Luigi have a Mr. L costume? They are competing different in every way
Short answer: Yes, It’s amazing.
7:07 count black isn’t actually that evil. It’s someone else who is evil.
Mr l was made from luigi's *darker side and negative emotions.*
He seems to resent Mario especially saying that bro bot is his metal brother and that he was going kill mario.
He's also flirtatious towards peach and seems to despise normal luigi.
Apparently in luigi's diary he has had adventures in the waffle kingdom and is kinda jealous of mario and wishes that he could join him on his adventure.
When dimitiono betrays luigi he _literally kills him and sends him to hell._
_And that's the end of mr L_
edge lord I swear I see you everywhere
the dude was million times more confident then luig
where did you get the connection between Mr L and luigi
Uh...
'Sees just Bowser through the Sammer tournament.'
Seems legit.
Oh! I just realized Mr. L is Wario! Nintendo is really clever.
Naw mate he King Boo, because his eyes have a black outline, DuHhHh
someone gave me a fake spoiler while i was playing that mr L was actually luigi and i was super bummed out about it before realising it was actually wario
Actually, Wario is Dimentio because he lives in a society
Not enough garlic or mustache.

Someone may have said this already, but I'll say it anyways
You press "- and 1". -1
The game is double dipping minus world references

Bobby’s death: I’m gonna pretend you didn’t say that
The answer is yes, yes it is.
*This comment was brought to you by the Super Paper Mario defense force*
Can I join your ranks?
Tom The Fish 14:30
I’d like to join! Where do I sign?
Never played it, so I cant judge. But if there would be a Remake for the Switch, I would give it a shot. Even I have to admit that it is not a clsssic Rpg like the First two is a bit sad for me, but still.
I want to join the force because super paper mario is my favorite paper mario game
I love SPM so much, especially the story and how fleshed out the characters were
Ngl I thought he was gonna say something like “Oh wait, I get it... Mr L is Luigi’s cousin. Oh Everything makes sense now.”
Who's luigi? Oh..... you mean green mario.
Jackster Draws Who’s mario? There’s only red Luigi and green variant of red Luigi
@@Helicopter7 the "green variant of red luigi" is just shiny red luigi
I think it’s good. It’s story is as good as the previous ones. Yeah it’s a different gameplay style, but it’s got the same charm as TTYD. Partners were replaced not only by those pixel guys (who honestly don’t do much) but also by having new player characters including Luigi. And the best part, unique beings, not just toads and Goombas!
I've had a lot of fond memories of Super Paper Mario since it was my first paper mario game. That may just be me speaking with nostalgia glasses, but watching your video really wants to make me play it again.
14:36
I know this is supposed to be a joke, but I genuinely cannot stand the fact that this has _actually_ become the norm.
@@tacoman422 No. SS is awful.
I say sticker star is more or less better than color splash
kirbst3r r3con CS is way better but not as good as the first 3
*looks at Fallout 76, Bubsy 3D, The Culling Origins, Aquaman Battle for Atlantis, everything made by Digital Homicide*
Are you sure that's your final answer?
This is one of my favorite games ever and I adored it as a kid. Also this is currently the only paper Mario game to have luigi as a main cast member, and he becomes an antagonist and is foretold in essentially the necronomicon to be the harbinger of the apocalypse and becomes the final boss.
8:54 Cmon, man... that was the perfect place to say that those things "fell flat".
SPM is still my favorite paper mario game
Its simultaneously the most funny, and darkest mario game. You go through a dating sim with francis, now your in hell being dragged down into a river by dead people.
O'chunks is o'chunks, now a civilization of thousands of people have been repaced by an empty void because you werent fast enough
Some say its bad just because its different, which is incredibly stupid. If something is bad just because it isnt exactly the same as every other entry, thousand year door and 64 would also be bad because they arent platformers.
Funny thing, I actually memorized the whole password when I was younger. Because I had no idea where to find paper and a pencil.
I absolutely *LOVE* this game. The gameplay was fun, the story was phenomenal, and that music! 👌
Exactly. Everything was amazing.
