I dunno if that still applies to me now, I still own the game but its one of those hidden memories I feel I shouldn't ruin cause it secretly sucked but my childhood said otherwise lmao.
To put it simply, the game is a great "baby's first RPG." When I played it as a ten year-old, I thought it was legit, and I also replayed it multiple times. I wouldn't discourage you from replaying it because, while you will find some things aren't as great as you remember, you will also see new things about the game you didn't notice before that are extra cool, and you will appreciate the game in a new light.
"it is simply nice to go back and remember a time when Sega cared about NiGHTS" me, looking at the Steam copy of NiGHTS Into Dreams I just got as part of the 60th anniversary stuff:
Yeah, while she was and still is the best female Sonic character (unlike Marine), it still doesn’t change that nowadays, Sega could have done so much more with her!
There was a dark time in my life where Sonic Chronicles was one of the few videogames I actually had, alongside New Super Mario Bros and Wario Ware: Twisted. I enjoyed Chronicles 'cause I didn't know any better, even challenging myself to speedrun it within a single day... multiple days in a row. I dread going back to that game 'cause I KNOW it's not gonna be as good as I remember.
At least the game doesn't punish you for running like "Lunar: Dragon Song" does. Or suffer from bosses that can be utterly crippled by status effects like "Witches & Vampires: The Secrets of Ashburry" and "Vampire Legends: The Power of Three".
Such a shame it never got a sequel thanks to damn Ken penders raising a legal fuss over shade. Caused too much hassle for bioware and Sega that they just dropped it and moved on with other games
I grew up on sonic chronicles and honestly loved it...looking back I can see how it’s not a good game, but it will always have a special place in my heart
Is this why Blaze should appear in more Sonic games and have her own story? Like she did in "Sonic Rush" and "Sonic Rush Adventures". Same thing goes to Marine. These girls are technically forgotten. (I don't mention Blaze's appearing in olympic and racing games though).
You can blame sonic 06 for that one which flat out ruined blaze as a character, making her a almost mute sidekick for silver. I agree with you about marine. She's basically been forgotten about entirely and it sucks considering how at the end of rush adventure, there was a lot of text saying 'we will meet again' etc. Looking back I think she did have a cameo in the ds version of Sonic Colours but it was only in like one very short cutscene.
Dang those Chao are pretty good. I have a Rom Cartridge with Chronicles on it, so when I found Chronicles in a store a few years ago, and the store had a buy one get one free sale, I got it. Most of those Chao in the Physical cartridge are now max level, no clue how I did that.
10:10 I always viewed that as a positive. The special stages were always uncomfortable and monotonous so I preferred Blaze's route since she didn't have them.
Despite all its flaws, I still think that The Dark Brotherhood is pretty good. The presentation is... not good, the battle system is also nothing to be proud of, but the story was really entertaining, especially considering stories in 99% of other Sonic games. It truly felt like the team cared about the story and tried to make characters feel more like characters, and not like a few basic traits.
I honestly liked the battle system once I got to really learn how it worked. I didn't have any delays to deal with and all the combo attacks felt really cathartic to do. I do agree that the story is great, the second half being some of the best the franchise has.
@@jerrysmith8814 it's a long story involving a man named Ken Penders. Basically he threw a fit because he wasn't credited for the story's inspiration, since the story of the dark brotherhood was basically the same as the echidna clan's in the comic... He laid copyright claims to every character he made (who were basically almost every echidna in the comic...) And it ended up undermining half the comics storyline...
I really enjoyed Sonic Chronicles and played through it multiple times thanks to new game+ letting you keep your levels. I like the battlesystem for it's combo attacks where you use up multiple characters turns for a extra strong attack. And the chiptune music is awesome
I love Sonic Rush Adventure. Not only is the core gameplay great, I actually liked most of the ship gameplay, which says a lot considering Sonic trying new things usually goes horribly
@@gab_v250 The game looks pretty unfinished but Balan himself looks cool because of his personality and character design. Not to mention with the cutscenes. It's really beautiful though. Why can't we make a movie out of those cutscenes?
I have so much nostalgia for Sonic Chronicles, which is really is annoying cause I know it’s a not great game, but whenever I think about it, I only have memories of how much I loved it as a kid. This was also one of my first ever sonic games, with rush being the first and this second.
To be fair, your not the only person to have fond memories involving a bad game. I've run into people that generally enjoy "Falling Stars" a PS2 game that takes place in a world smaller than the starting city in Final Fantasy XII that features multiple areas that take upwards of 30 seconds to load into yet looks like a late PS1 game in terms of graphics. And the overall story and side quests can probably be beaten in around 10 hours with about a third of that being load screens. And, I've run into fans of "Lunar: Dragon Song" as well. A game so bad that one of my co-workers who loved the franchise couldn't watch me play it.
IKR. Sounds like he just glazed over the story, which is also why he probably didn't appreciate the story in Chronicles seems it relies so heavily on Battle's story.
I don't know why, but Sonic Classic Collection called Sonic 3 & Knuckles "Knuckles in Sonic 3" (which probably confused some people back in 2010) Edit: I got the release year wrong
Part of me wishes you brought up the massive lawsuit Sonic Chronicles caused, which caused a domino effect that lead to the end of the Archie Sonic comics.
don't forget that its the reason why every Sonic character created before that point is forced to follow some mandates that SEGA placed making it so that they are forced to act is certain ways (example shadow is now forced to be an arrogant ass that does not listens to anyone)

@@blitz4506 the reason he was able to win something at all was because Archi comics had lost the contract that Ken Pender had with them and he argued that he was going to use the characters he created in another series, so the court let him keep the rights as long as he did not used anything that would be from Sega including the concept of a race named the echinas so Penders had to change their race but got to keep the rights for the characters
I liked the boat minigames/exploring and it gave the game have some needed variety. Replaying the levels didn't bother me as much as I expected back then. I also played Sonic Rush Adventure before the first game and still loved it. However, the island missions should've either had less content or more unique scenarios. The clunkyness of getting some of them by talking to multiple people didn't help either.

I remember the gameplay and graphics being not *good* but *fun* "We may not be good, but at least we're fun" might as well be the Sonic series' catchphrase at this point lol

@@marcdimartino9118 I actually did last fall Some fun character moments and lore in an overall lackluster story. A pretty odd combat system, though I enjoy the tap commands honestly Biggest drawback (aside from legal drama) is definitely the presentation. Game is super ugly and sounds terrible. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a Sonic fan, since it's sort of a mediocre waste of time. But if you're a Sonic fan, learning more lore about the Gizoids and getting some fun well written dialogue with the cast is a good time, even if the plot and gameplay is kinda weak and the presentation is awful
Here's a few things about Sonic Chronologicals. You can use the L and R buttons instead of the touchscreen, after you play the game you can play it again with some shortcuts added in the story and more stuff is "optional". It's a good game, but it needed more work put into it.
@@yourfriendlyneighbourhoodl6206 the sonic and the dark brotherhood ds game im saying i injoyed it and wish it got its sequel but I also agree it has major flaws that a remake could fix
This might just be the nostalgia talking, but I think Sonic Chronicles was a pretty good game and had a story that completely captured me as a kid. It's basically it's own canon, with story elements from both the games and archie comics used. And I'm never gonna forgive Ken Penders for the lawsuit that prevented a sequel from happening. Wouldn't be that big of a deal if the game didn't end on such a major cliffhanger, but it is what it is.

"it is simply nice to go back and remember a time when Sega cared about NiGHTS"
me, looking at the Steam copy of NiGHTS Into Dreams I just got as part of the 60th anniversary stuff:
Glad to hear some other people saw the missed potential in Blaze, real shame too.
Yeah. Chronicles was an dull, sluggish & tedious RPG and Sonic game for that matter. How is it slower than Pokemon Gen. 4?
Sonic Chronicles' storyline is actually pretty great tough, it explains a lot about sa1 and the whole echidna backstory
Yes!
Such a shame it never got a sequel thanks to damn Ken penders raising a legal fuss over shade. Caused too much hassle for bioware and Sega that they just dropped it and moved on with other games
if it can be considered great, I guess it just goes to show how low the bar is with video game storylines
DS 3D models and the compressed audio are some of my favorite things in video games
I grew up on sonic chronicles and honestly loved it...looking back I can see how it’s not a good game, but it will always have a special place in my heart
Sonic Chronicles is still to this day the only RPG I've actually completed.
Oof, don't say that on Reddit, worst mistake of my life.
10 year old me didn't know better and ended up going through the new game+ like ten times. Oh how standards change
Oh my god... I'm so sorry...
Man, go play Dragon Quest or something to redeem yourself lol

Every time he’s on camera Antdude looks like he’s only 40% sure he’s saying the right thing.
And we love him for it! :D
Thats kinda true tho not trynna be rude
"I'm the sane one."
That line and that delivery.
Great way to end the video.
Man the Sonic Rush games we're my childhood... words can't explain how nostalgic they are.
Dark Chronicles.
Cons: Mostly everything
Pro: Shade the Echidna, cutscenes and chao.
The box art is also beautiful
I kinda enjoy the idea of a sonic rpg, just wish it were done....well, actually good
Other Cons: Ken Penders Destroys the Relationship between Sega & Archie, to ditch them for IDW.
Dang those Chao are pretty good. I have a Rom Cartridge with Chronicles on it, so when I found Chronicles in a store a few years ago, and the store had a buy one get one free sale, I got it.
Most of those Chao in the Physical cartridge are now max level, no clue how I did that.
When that game came out it was actually well-received, and then that maniac Penders went on a rampage......
10:10
I always viewed that as a positive. The special stages were always uncomfortable and monotonous so I preferred Blaze's route since she didn't have them.
"Mozart would be spindashing in his grave."
That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard so far.
I just remember thinking it was wild to see Sonic on Nintendo systems.
"Mozart would be spin-dashing in his grave"
The best thing that came from Sonic on DS,
was Blaze the Cat.
Fact!
That's facts. Best Sonic character to ever exist, in my opinion.
@@AuraStrikeAce argeed, i would really love her getting her own game.
They were left out of sonic forces, so I doubt they will be appearing any time soon
I wish I came out of Blaze the Cat.
What if I told you that game was one of the biggest reasons the Sonic the hedgehog comic went down?
@@dyingstar24 I don't know anything about that. What happened?
@@jerrysmith8814 it's a long story involving a man named Ken Penders. Basically he threw a fit because he wasn't credited for the story's inspiration, since the story of the dark brotherhood was basically the same as the echidna clan's in the comic... He laid copyright claims to every character he made (who were basically almost every echidna in the comic...) And it ended up undermining half the comics storyline...
@@dyingstar24 damn...
I really enjoyed Sonic Chronicles and played through it multiple times thanks to new game+ letting you keep your levels. I like the battlesystem for it's combo attacks where you use up multiple characters turns for a extra strong attack. And the chiptune music is awesome
hard agree
@@biohazardbin Extra hard agree!
I love Sonic Rush Adventure. Not only is the core gameplay great, I actually liked most of the ship gameplay, which says a lot considering Sonic trying new things usually goes horribly
Rush Adventure is hands down my favourite Sonic. It's so good.
Blaze is still my favorite Sonic character ever, she's also my main in TSR so yeah
Does TSR stand for Team Sonic Racing?
@@yourfriendlyneighbourhoodl6206 yeah
i finished TSR a week ago (the story) on switch and my main the whole time was sonic himself
He didn't even bother saying Eggman Negas name, cause he knew what would happen to him.

As always, I loved the ending to this video. Your deadpan humor never fails.
He's sane alright!

Holy crap, the Sonic Riders fandub is canon
sonic chronicles does have very interesting history after it was released with that lawsuit and such
Oh, I KNOW.
Whenever someone mentions sonic rush, i get flashbacks to altitude limit
And I’m so glad he spoke up about it
I'm massively nostalgic for rush, to the extent where I really love the last 2 bosses of the main game, but I can completely understand the criticism
"it is simply nice to go back to a time where SEGA cared about NiGHTS"
Well this aged badly, since the "spiritual successor" Balan Wonderworld had FLOPPED HARD
Since blaze is my favorite character, seeing this makes me happier
Did he say battle's story goes on too long??
Bruh it's like the BEST story of the franchise
I've never seen a Sonic story use almost every character in the cast so well, and it has by far the best characterization of Shadow.
Right, that game had a very enjoyable story+gameplay.
IKR. Sounds like he just glazed over the story, which is also why he probably didn't appreciate the story in Chronicles seems it relies so heavily on Battle's story.
6:46 The title should’ve been
“Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles”
I don't know why, but Sonic Classic Collection called Sonic 3 & Knuckles "Knuckles in Sonic 3" (which probably confused some people back in 2010)
Edit: I got the release year wrong
@@JonnySpecit confused me last year and I have had this game for like 12 years
0:09 for the 3DS video he’s gonna say, “Sonic has never really been the same since his jump to 3D... S”
Edit: I F¥€£ING CALLED IT!!!
True! Hey I am Sonic the fat hedgehog :)
He did LMAO
The Classic Collection was my introduction to Sonic, so yeah, pretty important to me.
Thats cool
Part of me wishes you brought up the massive lawsuit Sonic Chronicles caused, which caused a domino effect that lead to the end of the Archie Sonic comics.
The tale of Ken Penders is probobly like a bad drug trip for those who don't know that much about sonic
don't forget that its the reason why every Sonic character created before that point is forced to follow some mandates that SEGA placed making it so that they are forced to act is certain ways (example shadow is now forced to be an arrogant ass that does not listens to anyone)
@@Wolfen-fd6rk What are you taking about? Shadow misinterpreted 'Run' as 'Run away' which running away from a fight being something that is against Shadow's morals. Besides if someone yelled at you to 'Run' while being in a fight, would you honestly interpret it as 'Run in general'?
Or are you referring to something else?
which makes no sense since ken penders wrote for THEM, usig THEYRE property. he shouldnt own anything relative to the echidna species or concept
Sonic Rush Adventure is criminaly underrated. I loved those short rail gun mini games.
Its well loved
I liked the boat minigames/exploring and it gave the game have some needed variety. Replaying the levels didn't bother me as much as I expected back then.
I also played Sonic Rush Adventure before the first game and still loved it.
However, the island missions should've either had less content or more unique scenarios. The clunkyness of getting some of them by talking to multiple people didn't help either.
Am I the only one who genuinely likes Chronicles? I feel like it had a lot of potential. If it were ever remade, it could be great.
Potential maybe. But the product itself is extremely mediocre.
Nah, I genuinely liked it too. Played the hell out of it until the cartridge got corrupted and locked me before the final boss room.
I loved the game too
I liked it. Well I like playing as multiple characters plus cream is op in that.
I really liked the story, characters and move commands. But the strategy/customisation part needs an overhaul and oh lord the overworld lock & key abilities. It's Like Pokemon HM's but worse.
21:50 Kind of off topic from the rest of the video, but the fact that you actually mentioned Dragon Age when you brought up Bioware made me so, so happy.
I remember really loving Chronicles as a kid.
I also loved turn-based RPGs, was obsessed with Sonic lore and was a huge Nintendo fanboy, so gimmicks don't really turn me off. So that had a lot to do with it.
I really wanna replay it though. Might do that next year. See if it's as bad as everyone jokes/makes it out to be. I remember the gameplay and graphics being not *good* but *fun*
"We may not be good, but at least we're fun" might as well be the Sonic series' catchphrase at this point lol
Yeah I was the same way as a kid! I loved that game!
i'm not a sonic fan, but the fact he has a turn-based rpg intrigues me. that's why Sonic Chronicles is in my list to play someday (whenever i have more time, these days are being busy to me)!! i just heard Sonic Chronicles will get a remaster by fans so i'm hyped
Did you replay it yet?
@@marcdimartino9118 I actually did last fall
Some fun character moments and lore in an overall lackluster story. A pretty odd combat system, though I enjoy the tap commands honestly
Biggest drawback (aside from legal drama) is definitely the presentation. Game is super ugly and sounds terrible. One of the worst looking games I've seen from a triple a developer. Which is why I was surprised the rest of it was pretty decent. Not great by any means, don't get me wrong. It lacks depth and is definitely an RPG targeted at kids, but the combat, while flawed, was still fun for me for the most part
It's like... a 3 or 4/10 maybe?
I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a Sonic fan, since it's sort of a mediocre waste of time. But if you're a Sonic fan, learning more lore about the Gizoids and getting some fun well written dialogue with the cast is a good time, even if the plot and gameplay is kinda weak and the presentation is awful
@@JustAnotherMike_ That was very well said, and I agree with all of it. Thank you for sharing!

Here's a few things about Sonic Chronologicals. You can use the L and R buttons instead of the touchscreen, after you play the game you can play it again with some shortcuts added in the story and more stuff is "optional".
It's a good game, but it needed more work put into it.
Rush Adventure was my favorite game for road trips to grandma's house. That soundtrack and those boss fights were awesome!
That bonanzo bro will not be missed, sad he was cut :(
Sonic Colors DS is SO underrated
Yep. I actually prefer the DS version more than the Wii version honestly.

"Some call him Johnny" *SNRKS*
Anyone else find it funny that, after Sonic Rush, they kinda forget that Blaze is an alternate dimension Sonic & just treat her like she's always been in the main sonic universe or w/e?
Well in Sonic 06 they retcon her to being from the future and the kill her off. They didn’t kill her but they kept her from the future outside the dimps games.
I remember absolutely loving that somic RPG. Of course, that was as a kid, and I haven’t played, nor heard anything from it since then
I actually really enjoyed sonic chronicles growing up. Obviously it’s full of flaws, but I still have some nostalgia for it. Especially towards the end when you fight a ton of Gizoids which is a reference to sonic battle.
