i've literally never seen a grown yoshi in ttyd. questioning life rn
Yoshi's Stampede attack uses full grown Yoshis. I didn't know they were also NPCs tho
Me either lmao. That's amazing.
Super cursed
Never went back on the Excess Express as a kid?
@@carnage0685 i'm sure i did, evidently not enough though. it was my favorite area in the game!
I honestly feel like the most obscure thing for many TTYD players is seeing the new passengers on the excess express.
Least cherished area in the game, never to be revisited 😂
@@baiseduezcke2295I’d give it to Riverside Station; it’s just got that liminal feeling that you only get to be there for its purpose then leave for anywhere else. Its only competition is the Moon surface which is a cool set, and the alternate League rooms, which have a memorable scene with the toilet.
@@baiseduezcke2295 Unless you for some reason want to do all the troubles.
Wouldn’t it be visiting pianta parlor before you need to do so for plot reasons?
As a kid, I never noticed that Grodus's dialogue was swapped because I interpreted "You dare defy me?!" as "You dare mock me by refusing to fight? You must not care for her if you're not man enough to risk saving both her and yourself!"
thats exactly what i was thinking. i actually had to rewind cause i thought i missed something
I can't believe the Chestnut King all this time was supposed to be the Goomba King. I've seen fanart and pitched fangames coming up with ideas of what the Chestnut King could look like, when it turns out that it was just the Goomba King this whole time... Also, I recall the kiosk demo for this game, back when it was called "Paper Mario 2", using the whole frog weakness for Hooktail, really wish they kept it to that.
I don't think they're actually supposed to be the same character, though I do think the Chestnut King was named in reference. I left a comment explaining my reasoning elsewhere on this video.
THERES A HIDDEN ENTRANCE TO THE TROUBLE CENTRE?!?
Bro I know right? I didn't know that till a year or two ago and I've been playing this game since I was like 5.
Went down to the comments to see this stated by someone else. I did a backflip learning something in the game I never ever knew about. Looking forward to doing this in the remake too!
Another mistranslation is the “no sign” status effect that the Shadow Queen can give you. The English version says “Status hasn’t changed!” when you get the effect, which makes it seem like nothing has happened. It should say something like “Status increases won’t work!” because what it does is prevent you from giving yourself any attack or defense buffs or helpful statuses.
You're right! I totally forgot about that one.
I believe it prevents all status effects, both positive and negative ones, so it's a really cool status that can be both beneficial and a hindrance. It's a shame it's so rare, and got such a confusing description.
I imagine the reason for this would be that different variations of present tense aren't always distinguished in japanese. Without context, the translator probably couldn't tell if the present perfect tense verb "hasn't" or the present tense "can't" would be more accurate. In a lot of contexts it would be fine, you could often infer that something which "hasn't" happened in battle either "can't" or "won't" happen going forward, but unfortunately the implications here are entirely different
This status can also be inflicted intentionally from the Space Food item, but confusingly only 50% of the time
@@Namingway248 You can't infer that, since hasn't happened has no influence on if it can or won't.
An enemy with 2 attacks can just pick attack 1 endlessly, but because it hasn't picked attack 2 doesn't mean it can't. It could even have an attack 3 with an incredibly low chance of happening. This often blindsides people in boss fights when a rare attack happens especially several times in a row.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 Let me ask you this, if you performed a specific attack, and a text box told you "enemy hasn't been hurt!" how would this affect your strategy? Most people would presume that, unless some change occurred, that attack would not work. This is a normal inference to make based off the text you've been given. The implication of present perfect tense is that an action in the past is continuing into the present. The present is often (but not exclusively) indicative of the future, which is why its natural to presume (correctly or not) that in many contexts things that haven't happened won't.
The biggest problem here is "stauts condition" is something we inherently see as malleable. Because we know it normally can change at any time in the future, the present state of things doesn't actually give us information, and we therefore have no inherent desire to presume our status "can't" change based on the fact it "hasn't".
Bowser is my favorite character, he's got all the funniest catch phrases, like "Beware squids!" which he's definitely always said all the time
Paper Bowser gets all of the best lines. "You believed in your prophecy, and we believed in mopping the floor with you."
I think there's an NPC on the Excess Express that tells you the origin of Ghost T. (It's been over a decade since I last played the game) Apparently he was poisoned on the train. I've never seen anyone else talk about it, I'd have to check for it again.
That's right! It's a female red Toad in the dining car who talks about that.
"I heard that a long time ago,
a guy ate a Poison Mushroom
in the food on this train...
...But I heard he passed on
with a smile on his face.
I guess I understand that..."
@@DisableYT Ah good, I didn't gaslight myself then LMAO.
There's the bandit near Gloomy in RoguePort who says he'll bonk you if you threaten to talk about his hiding spot. Each chapter he changes "Bonk" into some other verb like "thwack". Post game he'll say he'll cry .
Honestly, I like that "inefficient" style of dialog storage and as a developer I'd put that in as the base implementation with intention of going back later and giving every NPC a little offscreen arc and have things to say every chapter. I imagine the copy/pasted dialog was a result of not finding time to devote to that.
It's a functional brute force approach, but there's no reason not to have a pointer system so that redundant dialogue could simply be made by pointing to the same individual string.
If you want to see an example of that done better, check out the Trails in the Sky / Trails of Cold Steel games.
I feel like if the game attempts to do wavy and shaky dialogue at the same time, the fact that it didn’t end up working in the final game is probably because of some slight error behind the scenes. They clearly intended for it to be a thing. They probably messed up something and never noticed it, maybe because they never told play testers it was supposed to be able to do that so it was never reported that it didn’t, or something like that
kanban (看板) means signboard, which is why its for signs
Wanted to check the comments to see if anyone had mentioned this, and yeah, it is. Timestamp for where this is relevant if anyone wants it is 24:33
>Some of the text is not displayed correctly because of a function-oversight
>They forgot a waitcommand
>Displaced messageuse entirely
Errors in the script, my favorite oddity in gaming!
Honestly playing all these rpgs that were dialogue heavy are the reason I did so well in my English classes as a kid
completely agree, whenever I replay this game I often remember so many specific textbox lines because I learned a word or phrase for the first time from it. Bowser shouting "AIRHEAD!!" or one of the badges using the word "succumb" or what a contact lense is or "PLUG-UGLY!" or Gorgonzola being a type of cheese or the word millennium or a key being a tropical island of some kind or--...
fun fact: there's unique dialogue if you use vivian to listen to the birds in twilight town after chapter 4, and if i remember correctly, it is very funny dialogue. i saw it in one playthrough and i tried finding a video that shows it, but i can't find it anywhere.
edit: oh right, you have a website for this...
I had no idea, in all my years of playing TTYD, that there was a secret entrance into the trouble center.
Yoshi do talk on average.
But what's truly brow-raising is that Yoshi having a wife.
Really makes you question the whole egg laying thing.
I like your voice, and I think your voice acting is pretty good!
a lot of times when niche topic channels try voice acting, I find it really difficult to bear, but your takes on these characters are super listenable to me; you give everybody the right amount of emotion and accents, at least to my tastes. the good delivery successfully makes TTYD's sense of humor hit better. it's an odd world full of unique people, and you treat it that way; everybody's got their own little uniqueness to them, as they should! 😤
my favorite is the spike-top's cute declaration at 15:55; everything pa-patch says is splendid as well
(and also, great work putting all this together, very well-made video in every other respect too! good-ass video)
They should double down on the wrong Grodus dialogue and just have him call you a worm no matter what choice you make. Make him goad you for not even trying. :)
I will scream.
The illusion of choice.
Nah, they should make him pull from a different dialogue tree entirely.
@@DimentiosLoyalestIf you refuse, he'll start using Flavio's dialogue.
An absolutely wonderful showcase of an under-appreciated part of TTYD! All of the attention to detail for the visuals made this video extremely easy to follow and understand.
Bowser before starting: “Im hungry”
…relatable buddy, me too.
oh my god, i was obsessed with bobbery as a kid so the fact that pa-patch has dialogue exclusive to having bobbery out and it's like THAT is going to live in my head rent free now
Bro really told bobbery his explosions were as beautiful as the setting sun and I truly believe there is no heterosexual explanation for this
7:28... The WHAT!?
Wait, How does Dupree know the shadow sirens were coming to Boggly Woods? How would he know that? How could he have even learned that?
Same way he learned that Goombella would be coming to each chapter area. He has a radar for women or something...
Vivian is a total babe so I could see him talking to her if she passed by

On the note of Hooktail's weakness: In the German version they actually retain it being a frog. However, the German version, it says that she fears creatures that start with "F-" and end with "-sch." Now, the German word for frog is "Frosch", so that checks out, but there is also the word "Fisch" which means fish which also fits that descriptions. I've seen at least one Let's Player trying to find a fish that they can use against Hooktail here.
I'm glad you mentioned the text effects and different text boxes. They're an overlooked detail and make everything feel much more alive, something the newer games are missing.
I like the crickets being the weakness better than frogs. I'd prefer a sound change to crickets
I thought the point was that crickets were Hooktail’s weakness because it was a silly weakness, so frogs being the actual weakness is not a problem with me as far as localization goes.
I think the cricket thing is such a well-remembered aspect of Hooktail and the Castle, that I don't really see them reverting the "frog>cricket" change either. Your preference seems like the most likely scenario to me, at least in the English versions.
The voiceovers were great BOMB! It really adds to the presentation BOMB!
"I'm sure I don't need to tell you about the hidden entrance to the Trouble Center" as he blows my mind by showing the hidden entrance to the Trouble Center
The duplicate dialogue is probably there because it's trivial memory storage and it makes it easier to edit dialogue as things change. A lot of the obscure, chapter-specific dialogue probably started out as copy+paste before getting some love from one of the writers.
I've played through ttyd a lot and not once have I seen an adult Yoshi, feels like I'm seeing a ghost
At 24:32 "kanban" is probably short for "tatekanban".
For context, in Japanese a kanban or 看板 is a sign/billboard. Tatekanban (standing signboard) is specifically what you see in the game, written as 立て看板。
Would love to see a video from you when the remaster comes out going over dialogue changes between versions! Of course we don’t know how much will change, but we’ve seen a few in the trailer already
Unrelated, your ttyd-style raichu pfp is cute
Thank you! A friend made it for me.
Here's a little video they made using the Raichu:

The dialogue parsing and the logical errors within that system are really funny. I'd never have thought a game with so much polish would have basic oversights like not being able to combine effects, or setting text color manually when there exists a way to make it default to something particular.
Do you plan to cover other text and dialogue systems in games? I have always enjoyed seeing the ways different games display and emphasize text, and TTYD's systems seems to be one of the more advanced ones despite its shortcomings.
Night in the Woods had a lot of text, but it felt "off" since the line break weren't done manually which led to a lot of left-aligned paragraphs with odd line breaks, and apparently within the game's code they use emoticons to make the characters emote. So o7 would be a salute, for instance.
I would love to cover other games, but no promises.
Right now, I have no idea how easy it will be to access the dialogue files of other games, or if any of them will be half as interesting as TTYD ended up being.
This video hit me like a truck. Some things here, answer questions I had for years.
Good Work.
I just love all the new paper mario creators ^^ thats a feesh wind to Kappy Fatguy and Koops etc.
i mean we all just kind of accepted that the game said that sound was crickets. im sure we just wouldve accepted it if they just kept it as frogs
i hope your channel keeps growing! you deserve a lot more than you've got :3
i feel like you made this video specifically for me and now i’m more paranoid than usual. have a subscribe!
you do a pretty decent Southern accent for someone what doesn’t live here
holy FUCK i’ve been playing this game for 15 years and have never once seen the back entrance to the trouble center
that is insane
Ok to add to the Hootail's weakness being crickets here's a fun fact. In the demo for the game that you would play at stores they do say Hooktail's weakness is frogs. So in the final version of the English translation they changed it to crickets.
I prefer Hooktail's weakness being crickets, it seems a little more creative somehow; people being disgusted by frogs is a slight cliche, but I've never heard of anyone getting grossed out over a cricket's noise. It makes the situation feel more special.
As someone who feels sharp head-pain and flies into a rage whenever they hear crickets - or even worse *cicadas* - I feel extremely sympathetic towards Hooktail, myself.
This was great! I love learning in depth and hidden stuff about games.
Really well done video man, super interesting. Would love to see more from you!
I definitely saw the toad sisters in Chapter 2 because I was stuck for like six months on that level...scouring every inch of the forest to make sure I didn't miss anything. I also became convinced there must be a really kickass secret in the room where you fought the Shadow Princess because you have no reason to go back there and it takes a very long time to get to...sadly no.
Man I keep thinking I know this game inside and out but I still, every one in a while, learn something new. Even if it's something small.
17:48 Finally, unused dialog for the unused dialog video
This was really interesting I hope you put out more videos!
Fantastic content about one of my favorite games! Keep up the good work!
Great video, learned so many new things about TTYD
omg great video, cant wait for all of the answers to be clear in the remaster for some translations. chances are the answers will be mixed which will make for soooo many video comparisons. and i will watch them all.
Knowing what some of the functions do in the bts part of the video might actually help me out quite a bit in the future! I want to make a mod for the game eventually so knowing what they all do will help me tremendously when the time comes :)
So thank you for explaining them!
This was a really fun and interesting video!
Thanks!
Pa-Patch makes fun of Bobbery's love of his deceased wife TO HIS FACE, then asks to go on a sunset date with him RIGHT AFTER??? what a guy, that Pa-Patch, what a guy...
These are all so cool! Thank you for this video.
Great analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
Fascinating. From my recollection, Super Paper Mario has a lot of stuff like this as well. Not sure about the first game though. I'd love to see videos on either of those
Hey, big respect for your website project. Good luck!
Pa-Patch definitely admires Admiral Bobbery, who is himself admirable.
I love your voice acting for all of the characters!
Amazing video buddy keep em coming !!
Came for the adorable profile picture that you have.
Stayed for the really good video on a game i love, glad TH-cam's algorithm did its job properly
Welcome back, and good work!
This means you could add so much custom text based off all that redundancy
Dang I was watching this on 1.5x speed and didn't even realize. Great content bro.
Can't wait for the remake!
Fascinating video! Also, I found your impressions very enjoyable and wouldn’t mind some animated voice overs for the characters for the remake to add more charm to the game. They did it a TINY bit in Mario rabbids and it was pretty neat
I'm pretty sure all these mistakes will be fixed on the Remake, you should make a video for when that comes out
Thanks! I plan to.
Your profile picture is adorable. I've seen a few Paper Mario style icons floating around.
Super interesting stuff!!!
Great video!
keep going, God enjoys you having fun
For Hooktail's weakness, they did say it was frogs in the French version
Its also frogs in the remaster
I love learning stuff like that. I'm actually curious about the colors. I've once tried to use a color hex to make a nice yellow text, but the game crashed on me. No clue why though.
I'm not sure what you were doing, but my best guess is maybe you used an RGB hex? The color function expects RGBA.
I love your character voices
babe wake up new ttyd content dropped
Really interesting video!
Thank you so much!
i always notice in my playthrough’s that Cursed Chest always says “HEHEHE FOOL!!” in the big font once you unlock it, but the second one in Hooktail’s Castle isn’t programmed correctly and is the small font instead 👀
hello! i recently did a playthrough where i checked Goombella for every interactable NPC and room, it was super interesting! she made a couple mistakes, like that Freddy guy i noticed in my playthrough too, but overall the amount of dialogue is extremely impressive lmao
kanban 看板 =signboard.
Those voices were great, especially the bob omb
Wait you only have 2 videos and they are very, very interesting
dope video :]
24:33 Kanban is a romanization of 看板 which literally means signboard
i love your voice acting haha
Your dialogue tree website listed a tattle on the parrot in Creepy Steeple. MarioWiki says it’s unused and goombella instead gives a description of the parrot room. Would you have evidence of the tattle working on the parrot or should you move it to unused?
You're right! It's unused!
Thanks for letting me know! I moved it to the unused section.
“If they don’t fix this in the remaster-“
yeah no duh of course they have to, that’s what a remaster is.
There's adult yoshis in this game?! (besides from the smol yoshi's special move)
For the duplicated dialogue, my guess was that there's a master version of the file where it was deduped, and it would search backwards to earlier versions of the text, so that you'd only have to enter it once, and it was then exploded out into the multiple copies in the disc version, for lookup speed. The missing wait step that you spotted suggests that maybe the devs really did have to maintain multiple identical copies by hand...
It's possible that what you're suggesting is true for the original Japanese version. I don't know enough about that version to know if it has similar mistakes in its duplicate text. But that would definitely have been a smart way to do it.
Another error that bugs me as much as Grodus’ mixed up options is that during the scene where you’re getting encouragement through the crystal stars once it gets to the Glitz Pit you get that one blue koopa from the major league instead of King K. He even uses dialogue that was clearly meant for King K, and it’s always bugged the shit out of me. It was clearly supposed to be King K, but they flubbed up and put the blue koopa there
I hope they fix that one too.
I wonder if it's actually a wrong model, or if the localisation team just gave him the wrong voice.
But regardless of the original intent, and how much I've learned to appreciate Shellshock over the course of these projects, it probably _should be_ King K up there.
Dialog about Dialog...nice
Typo in the description, says "wor, king"
good video :3 subscribed
Surprised you didnt bring up what happens when you go to see Don Pianta early
Quick search, looks like kanban is like a project management board. So I'll interpret it as "message board" or "sign".
this is epic
As someone who bought the OG game back in 2004 and was dissapointed by it, this video is outstanding!
I also learned a lot of things about the way Paper Mario's dialog works.
Man, that's a lot of stuff l missed out on when l abandoned my spoof hack. I dunno if you or the community knows, but there are some unused text functions, too! I found them by searching the used functions in the executable, l think (this was years ago).
The noise effect from 64! It's kinda hard to see, but it's there.
Used by Ms. Mouse and Thwomp Quizzers on only two maps each. Seems to do nothing?
Volume! 100 seems to be slightly quieter than default. Can be muted or made louder.
Hangs if there's no second variable. Otherwise, dims the star prompt permanently? Strange.
%s Nothing???
For Japanese Furigana. Does nothing outside of Japan?
So, really just a volume controller and the noise effect are useful, but it's pretty nifty. Doesn't seem to be on TCRF, either.
Dude, that's awesome!
I loved the noise effect in PM64. Interesting to see they considered using it again.
damn i need to play this game fr
