You didn’t mention the best thing about DS: it came with download play, meaning only one person needed the game for everyone to play the mini games. Awesome feature
i played 4 player with one cart a few months ago with my friends in the parking lot of a local burger joint. I convinced them all to bring a DS and it was amazing.

I mean, yeah, it's awesome, but all the other ones also had Download Play, so not really much of a feat.
MPDS was also limited to Download Play, which makes no sense. Meanwhile, the 3DS games have Multicart Play available, fixing the long loading screens.

I remember getting Mario Party DS for Christmas when it was new.
And as if it was a miracle, it's the ONLY Mario Party game I have, so I didn't lose friends...not that I had any.
Maybe I could have made some friends with the falling stick toy, that would have made me one of the cool kids.

Mario party DS is so underrated , I thought it was a lost media until i rediscovered it
Now this game has been revived by its anti-piracy screen which is actually not real in fact i got a copy for my birthday this year

The best part of Island Tour is the Bowser map where the goal is to lose. It's honestly a really fun gimmick and I'd lose to see it return.
You fight to lose minigames first. You try to move as few spaces as possible, etc.

One thing I loved from that board is the fact that since the characters DON'T want to move, all the spaces have flame jets on them to cause the classic Mario "run around with your ass on fire" motion.

I remember playing Mario Party DS when I was younger and being like “this is actually heat.” Then I remembered it recently and went back to play it in case I was blinded by nostalgia, but it’s actually pretty compotent and had some great modes looking at it in retrospect.

The secret thing in Advance comes back in a Link Cable mode called "Secret Battle", first to win 5 minigames and you get to see the secret of the other player.

Mario Party DS is still my favorite mario party. So many fun times and good memories with it.
Honestly, Star Rush is one of my favorite Mario Party games period. It has a lot to do with how it was a good time waster to play around with during a rough time in my life. I appreciate the Toad Scramble and Balloon Battle modes for being a different take on the series which was nothing like the old games, obviously, but they also still felt like an interesting new way to at least handle the board games as actual board games if we weren't getting the original formula back... before the original formula came back. And while I appreciate them, they aren't why the game is so personal to me, as that is Coinathlon and to a lesser extent the Challenge Tower that managed to be super important to my mental health for a time. Like, even now, if I'm just wanting to play some game while listening to a video or lurking in a stream, Coinathlon is an option that I return to every now and again, because that mode is brilliant and if there's one thing I wish they would bring back in the future, that would be it.
And the other 3DS titles are okay, nothing special, and I enjoyed them. But I agree, it's stupid how Top 100 chose games so unevenly and didn't include Dungeon Duos. And they really should've taken one board from each game, with the appropriate gameplay. Sure, people would've still complained about it not being on Switch, but at least it would've signaled the return of the series roots before Super Mario Party did and also would've likely been way better received as a result.
Also, I'm glad we're past the "WHY IS THIS NOT ON SWITCH!?" craze from near the 3DS' lifespan, since it always just made me roll my eyes since it was all budget titles clearly meant to wring the 3DS for just a little more cash, but that's just me.

Sometimes, I think about how NDCube fully acknowledged that MP9's car system was bad, so they took a more traditional approach in MP: Island Tour...
...only to reuse the car system in MP10 anyway, with basically no improvements

Personally, I thought Island Tour was pretty good, with the Card Board being my favorite. Honestly, Island Tour was my favorite out of the ND Cube Mario Party games.

FUN FACT: In my country (The Netherlands) with the exception of Mario Party 9, almost all the ND Cube Mario Party Games (Plus Wii Party and Wii Party U) are translated in Dutch as well as the voice clips of the announcer.
Mario Party DS is actually my favourite entry in the entire series, it’s the one I go back to most when I wanna play with friends, and only needing one copy with download play is a plus. The carried boards and ways to collect stars are all super memorable. Defiantly peak Mario Party for me.

I consider Mario Party 7 to be the best; though Mario Party 6 is still quite good. It helps that it improved the orb system from Mario Party 5.

I actually like Star Rush at lot and I got it as a birthday present in 2016. I really liked playing through the Toad Scramble mode for a bit, and I also liked the coin-athlon mode too.

Mario Party DS always gave me a summertime vibe. The music, the backgrounds in the levels and the minigames themselves just scream summer to me. It's so freaking nostalgic.
I loved Mario Party DS. My siblings and I all had DSs and my friend sold his to me so on long family car rides we would play the nearly every free for all mini game. Great times...
I remember growing up playing Mario Party DS. It was a blast to play the rather creative minigames made for the DS. The concept of having bosses after a stage was also mind blowing for me and some of the pictures straight up looked menacing for 7 year old me.
It was my first mario party and I loved it so much.

Island tour is amazing, I still revisit it often during trips for the Bowser Tower mode & to play on some boards like the kamek one

I thought the tower game was fun too, the only problem I had with it though was once you do the more harder difficulties theirs a 100% chance that you are going to have to take a guess. Personally I prefer mine sweeper over it.

I more or less echo your thoughts, Ant. Personally, I'd swap DS with Star Rush as my favorite. In addition to helping me out with my dad's aneurysm, I find that its roster and mode selection is great for playing on the go. That said, boss fights get repetitive, even in my favorite mode Balloon Bash.
DS, however, is very, very good. For ten years, it held the spot as my top Mario Party on the go...until Star Rush. It really does take the great parts about Mario Party and put it on a handheld device. In addition, the story is brilliant, especially in regards to its well-illustrated cutscenes and fun boss fights. It certainly took advantage of what the Nintendo DS could do...
As for the others...I believe that Island Tour is all right. The boards are hit-or-miss, the minigames are good, and the story is quick fun. I think it's fine, but not much more than that.
Top 100 and Advance are the ones I don't like very much. To its credit, Advance tried new ideas and has some interesting character dialogue, but it's honestly one of my least favorite Mario games due to its tedium. Top 100 sounded great on paper, but its execution fell flat. An imbalance of minigames, forgettable board play, and lackluster collectibles leave me quite underwhelmed at best. Definitely my least favorite 3DS game.

Nah, there's one difference, Star Rush did not become my favorite because normal minigames are way too rare and too few. Still 2nd place.
I might be the only person in the entire world that actually legitimately liked Mario Party Advance. A mission-based single-player board game doesn't sound so bad in concept, and while the execution leaves a bit to be desired, I do believe the concept itself may appeal enough to some.
I really did like how you have a limited amount of rolls per playthrough, giving it a learning curve. You can undo your movement and get some movement points back, so you can plan and count ahead to either land in a Minigame space to hopefully make some mushrooms back, or on a Dice space to get an extra roll and really milk a single mushroom for all it's worth. If not for the fact that there's some quests that are locked behind specific characters, I would bet that it would be possible to beat the entire game in a single playthrough.
Also some of the toys were kinda fun, especially those that supported some very simple multiplayer. At worst they're a "huh neat" distraction that… no, I take it back. At worst is literally a falling stick lol, basically a coin toss but even more lame. It's so bad that it's good lmfao
It only appeared for a split second but I'm very glad to know that Face Lift made its way into The Top 100. That was always my favorite minigame from the first two games.

The 3DS Mario Party games remind me of Paper Mario. The newer games say "lol no" to the original formula, with mixed results. There's even that thing with the lastest entry on Switch, where they show that going back to how things were and building off that isn't quite what they're interested in.
I loved Island Tour's stats for every board and how inaccurate they are. They're all 100% luck-based, from the footage I watched, back when it came out.
In both cases, I really appreciate the risk of innovation, even when it doesn't pan out. Nintendo seems to do that all the time, even with their hardware. It's pretty unique!
I remember playing tons of Mario Party DS with you my brothers and sisters, had some really good times with that game.

Mario Party DS was easily the best attempt of them all.

Hey, remember how the original Minigame Island was set up like a traditional Mario game overworld? With each world having its own theme for the minigames, a hint on what minigame you'd play next on the space you were on, and how there was a fork in the road, giving you some choice in how you wanted to tackle the adventure? Remember when developers used to do stuff like that, instead of making it literally a line of minigame spaces with no personality whatsoever?
The first Mario Party game I played was the DS one at the 2010 new year's eve, at my uncle house. Damn, I played just the first board, but it feels so nostalgic, even more than playing Mario Party 8 with friends some years after.

Mario party DS is still my favorite in the entire series. A great variety of boards and mini games, extra bonus puzzle games that you can play entirely on their own, and you only need one cartridge to play with four people? One of the best values for your buck on the DS.

Mario Party DS is awesome. The boards are very cool, the games are nearly all just awesome and the best part is definitely that you only need one cartridge to play with friends. I cannot tell how much fun me and friends had during car or train rides or during rainy days.
I found my copy of mario party ds digging around in a dirt hill on a local construction site.
Took me about 5 minutes to realize what game it was since the logo was all scratched off.
Works to this day.

Mario Party DS was the only Mario Party I had growing up since we never really had a GameCube or an N64. I’m always happy to hear that it’s enjoyed by others when so many fall flat on the portables. Definitely had good times at sleepovers playing that game.

I will never forget managing to get a “world” record on that “game of chicken on a chalkboard” minigame that really should be impossible... someone I stopped at the right moment to make my distance read “00.00” and I was stupidly proud of that my entire childhood...
I put soooo many hours into Mario party advance to beat it. That damn cheep cheep race was so hard. Even looking back, I genuinely enjoy the game, although it might be a little nostalgia based. Running out of dice was frustrating, but as a single player game, it did make it last longer. Although, that’s not necessarily a feature.
The music was good, like you said, the sprite work was wonderful! It’s a shame more effort wasn’t put into the game play itself.

Island tour was my first ever Mario party game so to me it was amazing. The Bowser tower thingy was so much fun and the choice of the voice was great since I've always been interested in voice acting.
