I could be totally wrong on this, but my interpretation of the interview is that design wise, they are no longer allowed to make actually new variants of existing Mario characters or species. So they are allowed to dress them up in original outfits like the Sombrero Shy Guy or Ninja outfits on Toads, but their underlining design must still resemble their official design, meaning they can no longer do something like Goombella with her pink body, one fang and hair, or Bobbery with his unique fuse, beard and ship wheel wind-up key. This might also explained why a lot of enemies like Boos and Dry Bones got redesigns in Sticker Star onward to more closely resemble traditional designs. Likewise, it seems like they CAN make new characters, but if they don't follow the above restrictions, then they must be something completely unique from the existing designs. So stuff like a sentient sticker crown, or a living paint bucket, or talking/singing trees. And likewise, for whatever reason, it seems like they aren't allowed to use their old original designs for some arbitrary reason? Admittedly some of them like the Piders were a bit redundant, but I don't see the need to remove so many more distinct designs like the Clefts or Bristles. I do think even with these limitations, assuming that these are the actual limits, they can do a lot of really neat and creative stuff, but they definitely need to put more effort into mixing things up more. Having Mario enemies as NPCs is a great first step, but if Nintendo insists on these limitations, I'd like to see more characters from stuff like Sunshine or Galaxy or Odyssey make an appearance to help stave off the constant Toad fatigue everyone has.
I'm pretty sure new characters are only allowed if they're so far-removed from the "normal" characters to render them completely alien. Hence why the new bosses are realistically-rendered objects and the new villain and vellumentals are made of Origami. I feel like the trees in the Whispering Woods were probably a bit of a gray area, but maybe execs thought THAT battle was simply too petty to fight. The exception to this rule seem to be including a single new assistant character in every game, so Mario has a way of communicating with NPCs in the story.
I still don't get wh they limit character to classic mario games tho. Like, characters from Sunshine until Odyssey are not valid either? NPC Piantas or races from Galaxy or Odyssey , even by themselves without changes, would do so much for variaty in the design of characters.
@@jowysw I think by classic they mean the 2d platformers (for npcs), though Galaxy makes since given yknow they're aliens with no reason to suddenly be in the mushroom kingdom (after all Octoombas reappeared in a space level) Enemeis dont appear to be the case to a degree given we got Stingbees As for the trees... given there arent talking trees in any main mario game they could probably get away with it
I mean if there is an area where they can make separate and unique characters without breaking these "rules" then we can only hope later Nintendo will stop these restrictions all together when the designers figure out fully how to get around this.
@@OriginalGameteer to be fair for Galaxy the end of Galaxy 1 showed that all of the races Mario met were in the mushroom kingdom after Rosalina did some stuff so I guess they could use that excuse. Although the Mario series is not one that cares about story much. And apperanly that ban on characters is more noticiable with NPCs than enemies too? Weird... For the trees I guess they used the excuse that in Mario World was quite normal for the background to have eyes on mountains and trees so it could be justified that way?
The interview with Tanabe makes me think that Nintendo is just restricting second and third party developers from making original characters to protect the integrity of THE BRAND. Odyssey is a main-line first party title so of course they'd allow the team to be as creative as they like. It's pretty clear that this is not a problem with the devs as it is with the higher ups at Nintendo.
@@ericwijaya2119 Yeah, I don't know why I said that. Tanabe is the problem, and Paper Mario won't go back to being like the first two unless he's removed, either willingly or involuntarily.
@@Mqstodon an article on Reddit stated that Miyamoto had little to no involvement in the development of modern Paper Mario games. I cant actually show it tho cause i cant access Reddit.
Gotta tell you, I had no idea the game was divisive until I finished playing it and went online. I literally watched the trailer, thought “that looks fun”, bought it, played it and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Goes to show the benefits gained by turning off the internet and just experiencing something on your own terms
Nooo, you did it wrong! By forming your own opinion, you didn't let other people invent an opinion for you, and as a result you didn't join the war as a piddling slave against our nemesis, opinions-that-aren't-ours! Everyone conforming and being part of the same group without using their own brains is literally all that matters!!!
First game I played of the series, and I enjoy it for what it is, witty, fun, and cute. That’s all it really needs. Though I did find the puzzles boring at first…
I applaud this. I mean it's one of those things right like Wind Waker I didn't know I was supposed to hate it I just played it as a kid back in the day and loved it. I didn't have the access we have now to have someone's fully formed opinion typed in a limited amount of characters to a funny bird app telling me "Nope it's not OOT so bad" of course now Wind Waker stands on its own and holds up well so I'm interested to hear how this game does in 5 years time.
The Paper Mario franchise has literally been treated like paper, being folded into all sorts of different ideas, even if it didn't pan out too well. That's the best way I can describe the way this series has unfolded.
But just like real paper Once the paper is unfolded you can still see the old fold-marks (though the game is good, we still remember how bad the past 2 paper mario games were, and this game has its own ups and downs. Not as good as the original or ttyd, but a good improvement from the other two) (and the fact that they are no longer making unique characters is also sad)
@@10.ikadekanandadwipayadnya83 My only experience with Paper Mario goes only as far as the demo of Thousand Year Door, and the first chapter of Super Paper Mario. But hopefully, that will change soon.

TheTopHatBox Oh for sure! I would take TOK’s unique battle system over sticker star or Color Splash any day. I just find it hilarious that Nintendo would make a pun out of genre. Kind of like having a FPS game be about a scientist who measures Feet per Second
I wish the regular battles were as clever as the boss battles. There were like 2 enemies with mix-ups/gimmicks. Every boss battle had a gimmick/mix-up.
Origami King is frankly better than Super. Super’s great but people only really care for it’s way 2 deep story. I much prefer Origami King in every other department.

@@Mqstodon so by your logic every sequel that builds on it's predecessor is just the same with a different look. I think someone might be a tad biased lol
@@Mqstodon the only thing I agree with is that ttyd is overrated Edit: I finally got around to playing it and it’s now one of my favorite games of all time
I loved this game but I honestly feel like Nintendo is being too protective of the Mario universe. Yeah they make their own original characters with mainline games like Odyssey, but then they act like only first party mainline games can do that and second party games like these can't at all. It creates an odd double-standard, and then, as you pointed out, they don't even really stick to it that well. I guess the tree people are an extension of the hills that have been around forever but it's still weird that these rules exist and are also not hyperstrictly followed. Still a great game though.
I can agree with you on Nintendo being overprotective with Mario. To give my own example, I really loved the Mario Golf and Mario Tennis handheld games. Sure, you could say they were "Mario in-name only" but they had there charms. I was really looking forward to see what would happen to the characters in the hypothetical sequel, "Mario Golf DS" and "Mario Tennis DS"... and I'm still waiting. :( (this could also apply to the Mario Golf 64 characters as well)
You can really notice how Alphadream had to struggle with this limitation after Dream Team. First they made the super-underwhelming Paper Jam, then they stuck to remaking their old games cause that apparently circumvents the No-new-characters-rule. It's a shame that that Nintendo's protective rules killed the Mario&Luigi franchise.
I think the rule is actually in reality: no second party studio can create new characters, and if there are characters, they need to be outliers like bosses, protagonists or antagonists, and cannot remain in future releases. Citizen characters (like toads) can’t be created from scratch unless Nintendo does it themselves.
@@rodrigomorales563 Bowser was pretty intimidating in 64 -- IMO maybe have him team up like what they did with Antasma in Dream Team but at least make it more interesting.
@@zjzr08 I’d say Dream Team had something going by having him betray Antasma, and in Paper Jam, he’s a lot more destructive than the average Mario game.
I'm gonna say it right now, I think there's one thing literally EVERYONE can agree with for this game This game has a PHENOMENAL soundtrack, Event Battle, Origami Castle, and Autumn Mountain's Battle Theme slap
I’ve been playing through this game recently and I’ve been having an absolute blast. The original Paper Mario is my favorite game of all time and Origami King is bringing me the same feelings of joy that the original did. (‘:
I love the little detail of Colored Pencils showing up for the first time and the little notification of "Capture taken." in the corner. Like, I can feel you just being "Lol, what the hell?" and taking a screenshot of it in your amused bewilderment.
The rule about modifying characters and creating OC's really feels weird, because when I played the rest of the game with that in mind, it felt like that was a rule Tanabe was working around instead of deliberately trying to adhere to. I don't know. Go back and read through Bobby's arc, and it feels like it's lampshading that rule. He's a character with a compelling story, but he keeps defying Olivia's attempts at making him stand out and feel unique. She wants to give him a name, and he says no, and he keeps emphasizing the fact that all Bob-ombs are identical and live short lives. She's trying to elevate his character and make him feel unique and valued, and he keeps putting that down and saying that he's just a copypaste enemy. I feel like there's more going on behind the scenes with that stupid design rule than what was said in that interview. All I know is that a good game got made despite that rule, so there's some clever people on that development team, and I want to see what else they can come up with. I really do hope that they at least bother with some other NPC's besides Toads the next time. Mario has a lot of different characters and monsters. The Snifit and Monty Mole areas were great, and I want to see it go a bit further.
Yeah man, I had a similar impression when it comes to Bobby. It's also referenced again later when all the Bob-Ombs board Bowser's ship and Olivia mistakes another generic Bob-Omb for Bobby.
They managed to make a good game with those restriction. Imagine how great the game could have been without those restrictions. Such a big waste of potential and creativity.
Yeah, it's oretty clear that the team tried designing a game around the rule and pushing the envelope as much as they possible cound under the circumstances. "Look, this isn't an ACTUAL elderly Koopa, he's just cosplaying!" And "This Bob-omb isn't ACTUALLY named Bobby, it's just a mistake on Olivia's part!" The fact that most people refer to the character as "Bobby" rather than "Bob-omb" is pretty telling that Intelligent Systems knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
@@alfasilverblade Honestly thats the reason me and a lot of others are a little salty at the game, Its not Blind love for TTYD and 64 its this fact, they Have it they have the creativity and hit all the notes its just one little thing holding it back from hitting a home run out of the park,

And of course the big one to the right of all of them is Origami King.
1:12 I agree with you, I loved Color Splash. Yeah, it may have had some annoying parts at times, but that made it even better when I was able to get past it and continue. The wacky stuff takes so many different directions, you never know what to expect. We explore a poisoned garden because 2 Shy Guys had stuffed Petey into a Teapot, fight Ludwig in a half-finished submarine that looks absolutely ridiculous, tame a dragon with a burger, steal back a train with the help of a Toad who for him, every day is Arm Day, and fight a FREAKING RAW STEAK! It may have it's flaws, but you can't deny it's charm.
Still waiting for your review of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. I played the entirety of that game again on hard mode just so I can see that video come out.
I loved dream team its my favorite the the dream world was way better then running around inside bowser which got boring after a while and the music is great
Dream Team is sorely underrated imo, all because people got bent out of shape by the hand holding in the first couple hours. It's my favorite in the series for sure
This is one of my favorite games on Switch. I can see how some people might not like the normal ring-based battle system, but everything else about Origami King is fantastic. The art style and music are top-notch, it has a good story, and the bosses were a really interesting and fun switch-up from the normal battles.
@@somerandomguy5097 Just like how they folded enemies in sticker star, and did it again in origami king. However I still agree they should come up with something entirely new.
This game had a really amazing story. Olly might just be my second favorite favorite Mario villain in the series. The sound attack was also good. The graphics were beautiful and the origami aesthetic was a great progression of the arts and crafts aesthetic. I love this game!
Olly was alright. His motivations were pretty dumb, and the possibility that he's likely a child like olivia doesn't fix that. But he was okay, I guess.

"the series has never been cinematic before" Whoop, that'll trigger the Paper Mario purists alright rofl Truthfully, I honestly feel like this is the best Paper Mario game we've gotten since Super. The story is surprisingly gripping (and even kind of disturbing when you really analyze ... certain things that happen later), the world is just beautiful with how it's rendered and designed, and I'm convinced the staff are fully aware of the hate the last two games get because I also feel this has some of the most passive aggressive dialogue the series has had, and I love it. (also honestly, "Sticker Star is not a good game" might as well just be "You're not allowed to like Sticker Star")
Yeah some of the things that happen in this game are actually pretty disturbing. I’d specify what, but I don’t wanna get in trouble of spoiling some of the things that happen in this game.
I was so pleasantly surprised by this game. So happy that I just impulse bought it because the trailers didn't sell me on how deeply colorful the world would be. Shogun, snif city, shy guy game show, dancing trees, I felt like a little kid!!!
I am a huge paper Mario fan and paper Mario 64 was one of my very first games to play. I have been craving a good paper Mario forever and after seeing the origami king, I became so happy. Playing it, made very very very engaged with the story and I found myself very much invested. I love it and I feel it’s the sequel of the thousand year door! Very grateful for the game!
The sad thing is, a survey for the game showed that most people didn’t like the story of the game. My guess is Wii players didn’t understand the story, so they thought the story was just the string of events that lead to the final boss. And then, Nintendo saw this survey and decided that they couldn’t have a good story, and instead just the string of events that lead to the final boss. Solve a problem with the problem. Great job Nintendo.
Antdude, you misunderstand the interview answers. They are not allowed to modify PRE EXISTING SPECIES. They can put hats on if they wanted to and they did dress up a few in Oragami King. The body shape, standard features of the species cannot be modified. They are allowed to create New charatcers, like the talking trees, because they are a NEW SPECIES. Odyssey also adhered to these rules. All the different creatures in Odyssey were original species, there is not a single pre existing species on Odyssey that breaks this rule. I agree that the rule is dumb in the first place but I feel this is important to correct you on.
@@Fooza05 Yes, new species that tie into the Mario universe. All of the unique characters they've created from Sticker Star have been one offs and are not new established species'. It's a paint can, some office supplies and some generic trees.
@@shaankelly1302 Now that's the correct way of putting it but here's the thing. You're telling me the NPCs from Odyssey don't scream Mario? Same with the Origami Siblings too. Idk maybe I'm misinterpreting things here. Doesn't help that like, most of the TTYD NPCs too don't even remotely look like people from the Mario universe. I swear this statement gave me more questions than answers haha
@@Fooza05 I do consider the NPCs from Odyssey to be Mario. I think Tanabe is just misunderstanding the rule and could've put more original characters in if he wanted too.
"This franchise is not an RPG one anymore" Then why did it keep using RPG ideas like turn-based battles? If you want to be action-adventure, like a Zelda or Metroid game, don't bother with turn-based battles and attempts at convincing us it's an RPG. Nintendo literally tried to advertise SS as a return to roots after SPM, only for it to be even less of an RPG since SPM at least had EXP.
Whenever Tanabe opens his mouth im reminded of Izuka saying Sonic Forces is a step forward and Adventure is a step back. Also Shadow isnt allowed to be friends with Rogue and Omega anymore. Also Mighty and Ray arent allowed outside of Mania cause reasons. Origami King reeks of the stifled creativity that plagues so many other IPs and shows how out of touch directors are.
Let's not start comparing people to izuka, alright? As far as I know, this is just the one stupid thing, compared to the billion things izuka's said. I know that's an over exaggeration, but izuka really pisses me off sometimes.
Origami king is that rare animal where it's both top tier and bottom tier at the same time. Bottom tier, the whole battle system, top tier, everything else.
I mean really though, if they're limited to only preexisting Mario character, why not just use obscure/lesser known ones? They kinda of did this in Color Splash and Origami King, using characters like Dino-Rhino, Bone Goomba and Boss Sumo Bro. I can excuse Color Splash slightly, but Origami King came out well after Odyssey, so why couldn't they use character like Tostaranans for Sandpaper Desert or Lockladies for Shangri-Spa. Hell, even Color Splash could have used Galaxy NPCs like Whittletons, Penguins of the even older Bob-omb Buddies. It's not like they're being forced to used Toads.
They...do though? I'm pretty sure there are sumo bros in olly's castle at least, so some other enemies are there for sure. And like...the ones from odissey aren't mario species. They're original characters that are no doubt going to appear in that one game and that's it, so they can't use them. Also the older bob-omb buddies? That would awful for more reasons. 1, they would be reusing characters? 2, they conflict with the rules because their design changes many things about the original enemies designs.
I don't think you get it, they can't change existing mario characters, they can put hats or cloths but they can't make new versions of known species, but they can make new species like the folded folk or the talking trees.
Nintendo is like a genie. You gotta be extremely specific while asking for something. We wanted a turn based RPG, we got a *turn based* .....RPG, I guess?
Since ttyd is getting a remake, i might as well get it out of the way Origami king would have been much more appreciated if it was outside of the paper mario franchise
Whatever people's take are on this game, you have to admit the soundtrack is filled to the brim with absolute _bangers_ ! Edit: If we get another Paper Mario game, I _REALLY_ want them to have clay as the central theme. It's not paper, but it is an arts and crafts thing, and I'd be so happy to see what they'd come up with. Spoiler. And I didn't think I'd miss the presence of an otherwise unremarkable Bob-omb. RIP Bobby 2020-2020
yeah, this would totally work! I can't remember what it's called, but ya know the sequel to Canvas curse that came out on the Wii U? it looked beautiful!
I absolutely loved this game. I got attached to all the characters and the gameplay was pretty ok. I also like how it kinda shows a message of how the developers tried their best to cater to us within their limits. The limits for this is still confusing to me, as Mario and Luigi didn’t need them and look at how good they were
This game is what caused me to stop paying attention to gaming media entirely. Whining and blowing shit waaaaaaay out of proportion has got to stop. These are video games. They are for fun, and guess what, they are not required to live. I know, shocker. That said, this game was way more charming than anticipated. I enjoyed it. I don't feel like I need to play it all the way through a second time, and that is fine. I do feel like it was a tad too long, and that is fine too
An idea for a future Paper Mario game: for the previous games, we've done stickers, paint, and origami, but yet they haven't done anything with drawings. May I present to you: Paper Mario Spectacular Sketches! And besides, why not? You could have a character just be a blank piece of paper that could have memory loss, and the more of the bosses you beat, the more of the line art and colors in his body return. And the way that character's designed could also be different. Like have him look more like a doodle on paper that was cut out.
That sounds like a brilliant idea! If they go with this idea,I hope that the main villains are a group of snobbish sketch paper representing various art styles like Gothic, Manga, and Doodles.
@@wobblewokgaming655 It's ideas like yours that makes me want the developers to continue to utilize the Paper theme. It adds a lot of potential for wacky and fun ideas.
I think Bowser being the final boss in Colour Splash is fine. He just wanted to have a rainbow shell and play with the Toads but, got possessed by the Black Paint.
There's actually this really well-researched Reddit post that proved that Nintendo isn't actually the one holding back Paper Mario, and it's actually because Tanabe misunderstood Nintendo's rules. Got the game for Christmas thanks to my kid brother. As someone who considers Thousand Year Door as one of my favorite Mario games ever, I ended up enjoying Origami King more than I thought I would. Although I never played Sticker Star or Color Splash (but I heard I'm not missing much), I'm absolutely okay with what the game offers with solid, more accessible gameplay, fun bosses, great deal of exploration, cute and witty writing, and fantastic art direction and MUSIC. Oh man, I agree this is arguably of Mario's best soundtrack in a while with Autumn Mountain, the Vellumental battle theme, Disco Devil, Fanged Fastener, and Thrills At Night being my favorites! Would I like to see a return to form with the next game? Absolutely, but I doubt Nintendo will ever do so. They do have something going with the ring system though, so if they can refine it and add more strategy and things to do, I think it'll be great. The game gets a remarkably solid 8/10 from me.
I think it's really impressive that they made The Origami King so good even with their arm tied behind their back with the restrictions. And with the limits the have, I'm glad they didn't just use all folded Goombas and Koopas for the enemies, and instead braught back older Mario enemies like Sidesteppers, Scutlebugs and those crow things. I feel like they really did their best with what they could do with this one. And my ranking of the Paper Mario games is: 5. Sticker Star 4. Colour Splash 3. Super 2. 64 AND The Origami King tied 1. The Thousand Year Door
I really loved my time with Origami King, and if we kept getting Paper Mario games in this style, I'd be pretty happy. I just hope Nintendo does add more original designs to future games, as I do think it's silly that Odyssey can create new characters for its world, but a Mario spinoff can't
THANK YOU OH MY GOD I recently replayed this game and absolutely fell in love with it and I was worried I would be alone in absolutely loving this game
For the fans of the original 2 Paper Mario games, Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling is an excellent love letter to them. It has action command fueled turn based battle systems. The character development is really in depth throughout the entire game. One of the best things about Bug Fables is the special moves and abilities you gain throughout the story. When you learn a move in the field, you are able to take it directly into battle with action commands controlling how the attack goes. It even brings back team attacks like Superstar Saga had. Enough said about that. If you enjoyed the first 2 Paper Mario games, Bug Fables is for you.
Oh Boy, this was a long comment to type but I will say this. But for everyone and Paper Mario fans I'll respect your opinion on not liking or being mixed on Paper Mario The Origami King besides we all have different tastes in video games and that it's best to respect other people's opinions too we are all entitled to have opinions on video games, negative or positive. I'm not a fan of Modern Paper Mario, I'm not a fan of Old Paper Mario. I'm a fan of Paper Mario as a series. Now I never grew up with the last two Paper Mario games but I did play Super Paper Mario as a kid which was my first introduction to Paper Mario getting me hooked on the series/franchise and I'm glad to play it on my Nintendo Wii so many great memories playing it. I would say this I really enjoy and love playing Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash and I'm happy to give these two games a chance because of trying new things in the Paper Mario series/franchise sure I understand why OG Paper Mario fans want to go back to the original battle system and story heck I play Paper Mario 64 on the Wii U Virtual Console great game and a perfect way to start a spinoff/franchise but if you continue doing the same battle system and story it will get boring in my opinion. I think Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash version of EXP It’s more so a feeling of progression and self-growth more than lack of EXP. While yes Sticker Star and Color Splash lack EXP, it still has Mario grow by getting more HP Hearts, Coins, Secret Doors, and Extra Book Pages to store more stickers and for Color Splash it's the Mini Hammers to upgrade your Paint Storage and you get more powerful battle cards as you go on with the story even getting an HP Heart at the end of the Chapter/Big Paint Star which I thought was pretty cool and unique in my opinion. Now Paper Mario The Origami King version of EXP is confetti to fill your confetti bag to patch the Not-Bottomless Holes which is like Color Splash colorless spots which is pretty good, coins to buy badges/accessories and better weapons to help you in combat you can even use coins to spend on the battle timer to gain more time also you can use coins to call in Toads to cheer/help you in battle, exploring the world to find hidden secrets and toads, HP Hearts to make Mario stronger and many more that I won't spoil for everyone. I myself really enjoy the self-growth and progression EXP a lot in The Origami King and the battles are super fun and great even the bosses battle are super unique, creative, and challenging and I love it a lot in my opinion. I enjoy and love every partner in Paper Mario from Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Lady Bow, Watt, Sushie, Lakilester, Tippi, The Pixls, Kersti, Huey, and finally Olivia each having unique and cute personalities to them. (I would be happy to say the other partners' names In Origami King but that would be spoiling Paper Mario The Origami King sorry everyone) The partners in Paper Mario The Origami King are so fun and watching them act/fight in combat are so great to see and sometimes it's best and learned to say goodbye to the partners we made on our journey/adventure but the memories we made with them are worth remembering. I'm not a big fan of post-game stuff in video games but I can understand that for people who like doing post-game stuff and I'm fine with Paper Mario The Origami King showing you a secret cutscene at the end and mention your 100% achievement also giving you a gold star in your profile pretty good way to end a great game in my opinion. Of course, not all the Paper Mario games weren't perfect, nothing is perfect, but all of them were still fun and exciting also cool to play all the way through. I don't mind people calling Paper Mario The Origami King "Sticker Star 3" or "Color Splash 2" because I really had a great and fun time playing Sticker Star and Color Splash from beginning to end. I'm super glad to finally play Paper Mario The Origami King on my Nintendo Switch super great game from beginning to end also 100% it too anyway my rating for Paper Mario The Origami King is a 9/10 from adding so many new things, fun and great battles/boss battles, puzzles, and creative bosses even the story is great and I would highly recommend this to fans of Paper Mario Sticker Star and Paper Mario Color Splash in my humble opinion. I'm really glad to play Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario 64, Paper Mario Sticker Star, Paper Mario Color Splash, and now finally Paper Mario The Origami King, and I would be happy to put Paper Mario The Origami King on my top 10 games of 2020. I'm not interested in getting Bug Fables because that's not my cup of tea sorry everyone again. At the end of the day, we can all agreed that Paper Mario is a great and fun series/franchise that everyone can enjoy old and new that's the true magic of Mario games anyway peace everyone.
Just for clarification, Color Splash also had a secret cutscene at the end if you got 100% from unfurling the 6 banners (which were that game's trophies)
"but if you continue doing the same battle system and story it will get boring in my opinion." its why you improved the battle system for the next game. since you played og PM but from your post, you never played TTYD, right? i'm the same but after seeing a lp of TTYD, i can see why TTYD is well loved. they improved on everything for that game. the battle system is better and the story is way better than the og but still keeping the same elements like 7 stars and some stuff for the battle system. now picture origami king but having a much improved battle system with 3 party members than 1 with mario on the screen. this is another reason this hurts to see where PM is heading. is no longer a real paper mario, which was a rpg spin off. not a adventure game. "I'm not interested in getting Bug Fables because that's not my cup of tea sorry everyone again." but u played og paper mario and liked it...why not?

A, I REALLY want to play this game, it looks great! B, I've never gotten too upset over weird things in interviews like that, because after studying some Japanese, I'm aware of just how.... insanely different from English Japanese is, so a LOT of ideas don't translate over well, especially on rushed interview translations.
I don't think I've ever seen a video talk about Paper Mario being developed by Intelligent Systems (the same guys that make Fire Emblem). Everyone just assumes that Nintendo makes it in house for some reason.
@@Gust3883 I think everyone just assumes "it's Mario, therefore Nintendo makes it!" I've seen the same thing happen with the Mario & Luigi series, with people saying that the games are made by Nintendo without mentioning Alpha Dream.
13:04 This (or variants of this) is why I don't wish to see Mario 3D All-Stars done as a remake in the new style, instead of the simple remasters they are now. Artistic hegemony isn't always a good thing. Though... How do you like some of the Kirby interviews/dev blogs recently?
Especially given how weird some Mario sunshine redesigns were I'd sooner want them established as separate members of a species like with the Galoombas
There are two other partners you missed. They are in the autumn mountain. They are from the part where you have to bring the sombrero guy his friends for a canned food party. The spike and the skull goomba. If your set on progressing though, you probably won’t get the chance to fight with them. Still a nice touch.
After playing through The Origami King, if I could describe it in one word it would be "reluctant". The game is *chef's kiss* but throughout this grand adventure I felt that there were lots of elements that make this "action adventure game" just scream RPG. It constantly felt like the devs are reluctant to just embrace Paper Mario's past and held back on truly letting the series shine, but for old fans' sake they gave us a little something, but not enough. Like I said: Reluctant. Paper Mario: The Origami King was, as an old Paper Mario fan, the game that made me respect the new ideas, you know? The paper aesthetic, wacky mechanics and just overall different feeling from the original games, but it is also the game that made me realize that, aside from meaning that we will not get another TTYD, the paper mario series can accommodate for both new and old fans. It can become something even greater than TTYD if the devs weren't so reluctant and embraced what Paper Mario was as an RPG and what it is today as an "action adventure game". This game feels, plays and screams RPG, but the devs don't let it shine. You could truly do some wonderful stuff with the ring system if you mixed it with the partners and engaging combat of TTYD, for example. And how about you stop making freaking Toads the only Mario species and start making your own or even paper forms of the ones that don't have one? Starbunnies, Lumas, Bees from Galaxy, the tree guys from Galaxy 2, gearbots, Tostarenans, Nokis, Shiverians, Volbonans, Bubblanians, Lochladies, Bonneters, Tropical Wigglers, Piantas, Moe-eyes, Jaxis, Steam Gardeners and many more because that alone would make the world a million times more interesting than what it is right now. The ideas are there, they just need to put in the effort to do something even greater. I know they are able to do something more fantastic, something that is truly mindblowing and mindboggling, something that deserves the rating of an 11/10. Let them do their crazy and skeptical-at-first-glance ideas, that's great, but I think it's possible to embrace Old Paper Mario and New Paper Mario at the same time to create Godlike Paper Mario.
I like how antdude is talking about Paper Mario the Origami King but he forgot to talk about the Super Smash Brothers Origami King spirits that released today and great video antdude 😎
@@jowysw I think by classic they mean the 2d platformers (for npcs), though Galaxy makes since given yknow they're aliens with no reason to suddenly be in the mushroom kingdom (after all Octoombas reappeared in a space level)
Enemeis dont appear to be the case to a degree given we got Stingbees
As for the trees... given there arent talking trees in any main mario game they could probably get away with it
I mean if there is an area where they can make separate and unique characters without breaking these "rules" then we can only hope later Nintendo will stop these restrictions all together when the designers figure out fully how to get around this.
Yep, Tanabe's bosses set the rules, and expect them to be followed. Even if they don't like it.

The Paper Mario franchise has literally been treated like paper, being folded into all sorts of different ideas, even if it didn't pan out too well.

Whats even more weird is that games like Luigi’s mansion can have og characters. 3 had a lot.
(this could also apply to the Mario Golf 64 characters as well)
@@tjlnintendo Luigi's mansion 3 even had Tanabe as the producer like the new paper mario games, so we know Tanabe isn't at least fully at fault here.

"Look, this isn't an ACTUAL elderly Koopa, he's just cosplaying!" And "This Bob-omb isn't ACTUALLY named Bobby, it's just a mistake on Olivia's part!" My guess is Wii players didn’t understand the story, so they thought the story was just the string of events that lead to the final boss.
But bro Tanabe literally said "We aren't allowed to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe" that literally means new species
Does the Tropical Wiggler count, or is that a new species?
@@Fooza05 I do consider the NPCs from Odyssey to be Mario. I think Tanabe is just misunderstanding the rule and could've put more original characters in if he wanted too.
"This franchise is not an RPG one anymore"
Then why did it keep using RPG ideas like turn-based battles? If you want to be action-adventure, like a Zelda or Metroid game, don't bother with turn-based battles and attempts at convincing us it's an RPG. Nintendo literally tried to advertise SS as a return to roots after SPM, only for it to be even less of an RPG since SPM at least had EXP.
Okay, but Origami King never advertised itself as an RPG.

A certain Bob-omb would like to have a word with you.
My favorite part of this entire video is how he completely forgot to mention the 1000 fold arms
Yep agreed
You thought about Izuka-chan too I thought I was the only one
Let's not start comparing people to izuka, alright? As far as I know, this is just the one stupid thing, compared to the billion things izuka's said. I know that's an over exaggeration, but izuka really pisses me off sometimes.
@@rodrigomorales563 it's okay man he pisses all of us sonic fans off
Indeed. Paper mario really does share alot of paralells with Modern Sonic nowadays.
"Give us a flying segment with Flygons" overlooked line
Origami king is that rare animal where it's both top tier and bottom tier at the same time. Bottom tier, the whole battle system, top tier, everything else.
The entrance to Toad Town looks like the entrance to Goomba Town from Paper Mario 64
Boss Sumo Bro is Origami King, not Color Splash
He was guarding bowsers castle in the green streamer segment
well the tostarena people clearly are mexicans and sandpaper desee clearly was not méxico.
I remember when people were surprised to see the dragon from Captain Toad in a Color Splash trailer.

I absolutely loved this game. I got attached to all the characters and the gameplay was pretty ok. I also like how it kinda shows a message of how the developers tried their best to cater to us within their limits. The limits for this is still confusing to me, as Mario and Luigi didn’t need them and look at how good they were
1:13 "But that's where we are" chef's kiss
This game is what caused me to stop paying attention to gaming media entirely. Whining and blowing shit waaaaaaay out of proportion has got to stop. These are video games. They are for fun, and guess what, they are not required to live. I know, shocker.
That said, this game was way more charming than anticipated. I enjoyed it. I don't feel like I need to play it all the way through a second time, and that is fine. I do feel like it was a tad too long, and that is fine too
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the same thing as well!

There's actually this really well-researched Reddit post that proved that Nintendo isn't actually the one holding back Paper Mario, and it's actually because Tanabe misunderstood Nintendo's rules. I'd totally recommend reading it, more people need to know:
www.reddit.com/r/papermario/comments/ifvwl6/the_rules_explained_yes_it_is_tanabes_fault/?
So Nintendo said: we are gonna focus on toads.
Tanabe thought: no other NPCs just toads toads toads
This is really interesting. I wish the sources were listed though.
Huh. I hope they realize their mistakes.
I cant believe Tanabe was the reason why the Kremlings have disappeared from the DKC games. That pisses me off man.

Same
Turns out they went crawling back to Thousand Year Door.
I have something to confess: I enjoyed Sticker Star and Color Splash. Yes, that was me....
I and many others happen to enjoy these games too. Nothing's wrong with liking nor loving them :D
And my ranking of the Paper Mario games is:
5. Sticker Star
4. Colour Splash
3. Super
2. 64 AND The Origami King tied
1. The Thousand Year Door
All I’m saying; if you will; “Rip and Tear”.
Tell me a crumple zombie wouldn’t be cool

Not even gonna mention the fact that bowser is your partner for the final chapter
All you have to do is pretend Sticker Star never existed.
That's why it's best to boycott Origami King for Bug Fables.
Oh Boy, this was a long comment to type but I will say this.
But for everyone and Paper Mario fans
I'll respect your opinion on not liking or being mixed on Paper Mario The Origami King besides we all have different tastes in video games and that it's best to respect other people's opinions too we are all entitled to have opinions on video games, negative or positive.
(I would be happy to say the other partners' names In Origami King but that would be spoiling Paper Mario The Origami King sorry everyone)
The partners in Paper Mario The Origami King are so fun and watching them act/fight in combat are so great to see and sometimes it's best and learned to say goodbye to the partners we made on our journey/adventure but the memories we made with them are worth remembering.
Woah you wrote a whole essay
Also I don’t think you’re really missing out by skipping bug fables
Just for clarification, Color Splash also had a secret cutscene at the end if you got 100% from unfurling the 6 banners (which were that game's trophies)
Cool
I worship your essay it is exaxtly what I think
"but if you continue doing the same battle system and story it will get boring in my opinion."
its why you improved the battle system for the next game. since you played og PM but from your post, you never played TTYD, right?
i'm the same but after seeing a lp of TTYD, i can see why TTYD is well loved.
they improved on everything for that game. the battle system is better and the story is way better than the og but still keeping the same elements like 7 stars and some stuff for the battle system.
now picture origami king but having a much improved battle system with 3 party members than 1 with mario on the screen.
this is another reason this hurts to see where PM is heading. is no longer a real paper mario, which was a rpg spin off. not a adventure game.

I really enjoyed Origami King. I had no idea it was divisive until fairly recently
