As a person with a bipolar co-worker, who thinks taking medication is optional, it is really really hard to deal with. I try to have compassion but it is honestly so hard. I have gotten a promotion and a transfer to head office and after 4 years, I DESERVE, it and more. I am happy to live because I was almost becoming an ableist thanks to my resentment of said coworker.

Even if OP was able to get a successful lawsuit against her parents to seize property, put liens on financial incomes, etc, OP still won't see anywhere near the amount of money her grandparents originally wanted her to have. I have no clue why her grandparents didn't put that money in a Trust Fund accessible only to OP at a certain age. And, they would have been able to set it up to pay out either a little bit at a time, or all at once. Either way, OP should just consider this a "Lesson Learned", and study up on Trust Funds and the like for the future. ☕🤔

@@SedatedSadness I strongly disagree. It sounds like the mother got the help she needed, and is doing better. We don't need punishment, we need healthcare and reform. Too often we turn our thirst for justice into a thirst for blood. At that point we're stooping to a low level and we need to rise above. I completely understand that you are angry, and I do not know your background or your trauma. I would just caution that we not look at this as "she didn't learn because she wasn't punished" and instead see it for what it really was, a sick mother who needed help and finally got it, though much later than she should have.

And, I hate to say it, but OP will NEVER see one red cent of that money returned. Might as well have considered it a gift to them. Just like my brother. Everyone figured out that you NEVER gave my brother money, because you would never see any of it again, no matter how much you hounded him. I hate it for OP, but the only thing she can do, is consider this a "Lesson Learned", and study up on Trust Funds and the like, so the same thing won't happen to any of her grandbabies. They just dropped right into the bottom of the deep end when our lifeguard on the nearby stand was away helping someone and wasn't able to watch (slow day and the kids area is quite a walk away). Anyway, friend lifeguard noticed this and covered the area for him.

It is really sad that some people refuse therapy or accept that something is wrong with them. I told my son's father for 20 years that something was wrong and he needed help... instead, in those 20+ years, he just abused those around him and caused more trouble than was necessary. Since he's a narcissist, he refuses to believe that all that trouble was because of him and his actions, it's because of everyone else. The only people he has apologized to are his children and current wife.... and per my son it was the "i'm sorry you made me do this to you" type apology. Story 1. If a grown up ever assaults a child always call the cops and press charges. At the least that will give the person a criminal record so when she does it again, the Judge will see she has a history of assaulting children.
Story 2. OP's Parents are Dead! They died long ago and all she has now are Psychic vampires trying to suck all the joy and happiness from OP's body. OP should tell her grandparents exactly where their money went and tell them that she has felt unloved and unwanted by them all her life because of this. Then tell them that your Tormenting Vampire was full of booze and finally let slip what really happened. See what they say. Heck, they may even have known what was going on and actually be the people you thought they were all along. But it will surely be interesting to find out for certain.
Story 3. When parents abandon kids at your business for you to watch. Call The Police!!! Not your monkees! Not your circus! Not your problem!

My mother is Bipolar. And before she got medicated, she turned into a Jocasta towards me in my twenties, and also tried to infantilize me badly. It was incredibly creepy. She even tried to say she could have been my prom date. And on a rare occasion she still tries those old habits. And I always call her out. Most recently she tried to say I couldn't use the word "Hell", and tried to refer to it as H-E-Double-Hockystick like she was talking to a little kid. I'm 38. I told her off, and she's not tried it again yet.

Story 4: No. Her bipolar disorder dosn't excuse physically abusing kids, she was still aware of what she was doing as she was doing it and could also form memories what she did (so knew what she did afterwards). It's one thing if it happened once but then she should have taken immediate action to prevent it from happening again. Like sending the kids somewhere else and seeking help, at least stop drinking around them if it only happens when she been drinking. She was lazy and willfully irresponsible.

My first mother in law was the same as the mom in the last story. She scared the dickens out of us! She went after me with her claws and threw rocks at our house with our kids sitting under the window. She was stopped for DWI and got out of it with a high priced lawyer. She did that sort of thing for years. One day she unalived herself and I couldn't muster up any sadness over it. She was a terror! She probably also had bipolar disorder, but she refused to do anything about it. The rest of us got therapy. 😢🙄🤷

That last one made me think of the things my grandmother used to do to my mother. My mom is the eldest and she did everything she could to protect her sisters from the yelling, the abuse and everything. My mom basically raised her sisters. They both feel that way, even said so in their speeches at mom's wedding. my mom isn't perfect, she's a product of a broken, messed up family, but she's a hell of a lot better than she could have turned out to be. She fought to break the cycle of trauma, as did my dad. They both refused to allow generations of pain and abusive and neglect to effect how they raised me and my siblings.
Now all I can hope is that my best friend gets out of her living situation. She has a bipolar father who isn't on medications and doesn't receive any sort of treatment for it. She also has religious trauma on top of it (they're from Utah if you catch my drift...), I keep telling her that she will get away and will be able to heal, she just has to continue being the strong warrior I know her to be.

The story with the kids at the movie theater made me remember something about my own experiences. I had the OPPOSITE happen. Hung out with a friend whose mother would NEVER show up on time. We called her, asked her to come and get us both. The movie theater was midway between MY house and my friend's. We had to wait outside because friend's mom took so long to show that the theater closed. We were terrified so I called my mom to come get us and mom. was. LIVID. She showed up, mad as hell that friend's mom hadn't shown up and she got there WAY before friend's mom did. So I get into the car and ask mom if she would mind waiting for friend's mom, and mom (who would normally allow it) let friend sit in the back of the car. Her mom didn't show up for another 45 minutes....for reference we were 20 minutes away and we had called HER mom an hour before we called mine.

STORY #4-... OH MY GOD I FEEL SO SORRY FOR THIS OP DO YOU HEAR THE EXCUSES SHE KEEPS MAKING FOR HER MOTHER? DO YOU KNOW HOW GAS LIT AND COMPLETELY INDOCTRINATED THIS GIRL IS THINKING THAT A LOT OF THIS BEHAVIOR IS JUST BECAUSE HER MOM IS DAMAGED AND IT'S OKAY AS LONG AS YOU DO CERTAIN THINGS IT WON'T GET BAD BLAH BLAH BLAH? LIKE THE SHEER FACT THAT SHE HAS TO COME UP WITH EXCUSES AND HAS TO TRY TO SHIELD HER YOUNGER SIBLINGS FROM CERTAIN THINGS AND CAN TELL WHEN HER MOM'S GOING TO GO OFF ON A BENDER AND "SHE FINISHED HER SECOND BOX OF WINE"...🤦🏻‍♂️...🙈🙉🙊.
I mean I knew the story was going to be a doozy when the Opie started by saying my mom wanted to rebel against my parents so it's 17 years old she went out and got herself pregnant by a homeless person... Which is kind of okay because at least he wasn't an addict or anything but he did have mental health issues....LIKE WTF? , & JESUS TAP DANCING CHRIST!! SHE WAS MAKING EXCUSES FOR HER MOTHER'S BEHAVIOR EVEN ABOUT THAT!
THIS WHOLE STORY JUST SHOWS CYCLES OF ABUSE AND MENTAL TRAUMA AND HOW A LOT OF PEOPLE JUST ADAPT TO IT AND IGNORE IT OR MAKE EXCUSES FOR IT RATHER THAN ACTUALLY TRYING TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM OR TRYING TO ACTUALLY HELP THE PERSON BY GETTING THEM HELP EVEN IF THEY DON'T WANT IT!
DON'T GET ME WRONG HOWEVER AS YOU REALLY CANNOT HELP SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T WANT TO HELP THEMSELVES AND I WILL BE DAMNED IF I'M GOING TO DO MORE WORK ON SOMEONE'S LIFE THEN THEY'RE WILLING TO PUT INTO THEIR OWN LIFE.... WHAT SUCKS IS VOP FELT OBLIGATED AND I WOULD HAVE TWO WITH YOUNGER SIBLINGS, THAT SHE COULDN'T EVEN LEAVE WHEN SHE TURNED 18 LIKE BECAUSE SHE WOULD BE LEAVING BEHIND YOUNGER SIBLINGS TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS BS SO BASICALLY SHE HAD TO BE A PARENT TO THESE TWO KIDS AND WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LEAVE UNTIL HER YOUNGER SISTER WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE THE HOUSE...AND BY THIS TIME SHE'S IN AN EARLY 30S AND SHE'S HAD TO DEAL WITH THIS DUMPSTER FIRE TRAIN WRECK OF A HUMAN BEING FOR THAT LONG AND I GUARANTEE SHE WOULD HAVE NO RELATIONSHIPS HARDLY ANY FRIENDS LIKE A JOB MAYBE BUT NO CAREER NO SCHOOLING LIKE JUST UTTER DESTRUCTION AND MAYBE THAT'S WHEN SHE WOULD START DRINKING AND THE CYCLE WOULD CONTINUE.... SITUATIONS LIKE THIS LEAVE HUGE STARS MENTALLY ON PEOPLE AND THEY DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND IT LIKE ONCE SHE REALIZES ALL THE SHIT SHE BEEN THROUGH HELL DOING DRUGS AND DRINKING IS A REAL GOOD WAY TO BURY ALL THAT SHIT... NOT SAYING SHE IS GOING TO DO THAT BUT I'M JUST SAYING IT'S REALLY HARD TO BREAK THOSE CYCLES OF ABUSE AND I JUST HOPE THAT THE OP STAYS THE PATH AND HER DUMPSTER FIRE MOTHER GETS HELP

Second story where the parents squandered all the money from OP's grandparents. I'd inform the IRS about the total stolen and turn them in as they almost certainly did not report what must have been a massive sum as income.
