The young man in the last story should have looked his grandmother in the eye and said sweetly, "Sorry. I'm young and have my whole life to live. I can't look after you. Taking care of an old lady would be an obstacle to my future. You understand, don't you?"

Jumping on too add that the teacher would have had more of a leg to stand on if the kid had invited all but one or two kids. But only inviting three or four (a few) kids shouldn't trigger such an "invite everyone" rule. Especially since OP said he couldn't afford to invite 24+ people to the party. The rule is usually that if you aren’t inviting everyone, don’t hand out invitations in class. This isn’t about a few kids missing a few parties, but about the kids who never get invited to any parties not being further ostracized.

It's one of those things children need to learn early. Not everyone gets invited to everything. You can't tell a parent they have to invite everyone to a birthday party like you can't tell a president they have to invite the whole country to a private celebration. Stop coddling them.

    • @tafuckingdarh

In my country, you either invite the whole class or the boys/girls. We don't leave anyone out, and if you do, you have serious problems and a news paper covering it. On the other hand, the other classmates' parents aren't attending. Growing up with this, I truly have a hard time understanding the 'pick out some/a few' way. I understand it a bit more if you also have to invite the parents, but it clearly is a cultural thing. In my country, this parent would be the a-hole.

    • @Rhaenarys
      @Rhaenarys 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's a common rule in most of the districts around US. It's meant to prevent kids from being excluded and bullying, but really, teacher is doing her job. Not saying it's right, but this is a problem that requires the parents to change, and possibly even press lawsuits as its an invasion of privacy. But...parents don't and haven't, so it still stands in many districts. Usually kids are told this at the beginning of the year, as an advisory to keep their invites on a more hush hush level. When you look at it from the perspective of the kid whose picked on and the only one in the whole class that's excluded, it makes sense. But often times, invites don't work that way, and the one being excluded is a Karen's precious jonny rotten.
But yea, parents need to come together to get the rule changed, not yell at the teachers like they can change the rules. If the superintendent is elected and not appointed, parents could use that as leverage. Sadly, my district is appointed.

I then told my boss I needed to go to my kid's school, and I'd be back ASAP. I went to the school, and informed the principal of the call. The principal called her to the office, and she looked like she'd bitten into a sour grape when she walked in and saw me. She initially tried denial, then I asked the principal to call my son in. After a few minutes of her stammering and trying to lie her way out of it, she was fired on the spot. It made what I paid for private school worth it in that moment.

That way all the children who have birthdays in summer get to celebrate with their classmates.
But our school district instigated a no party invites allow at school.
That way if the children could only invite a few or didn't want to invite some there are no hurt feelings as that can cause issues.

Too bad if Kid A doesn't invite you to their party. (unless you thought they were your bestie, then it'd sting). I can't recall ever caring about attending another student's party or not - and there'd have been the hassle of getting them a present (stingy stepfather) and getting a lift there and back (stingy stepfather) so it was better if I didn't, all round. Was in fact, surprised once by being invited to a girl's party whom I hardly knew. Won every prize in the little games (because they involved things I knew, or was good at), and was glared at by everyone. Not the best experience after all, ironically. Developed an allergic reaction after that to anyone handing out party invites at school. Auto refusal from me. "Dad won't take me" got me out of it all, and was probably truthful as well.

Of course the teacher cannot dictate who is invited, but she can decide if the invitations can be given out on school time.

I think there are two sides to this issue. On the one hand I can understand what the schools are trying to do with a rule like that, but it seems rather crudely done. It is all too easy to circumvent it by giving out the invites after school, and still leaving out a few classmates who will soon realize they were the only ones not invited. So the "mean girls" thing can still be done, just less openly.
On the other hand forcing parents to invite a whole class if they don't have the means, space, nor the child any interest to do so just for the sake of inviting one or two close friends from class seems oppressive. It feels like there should be room for negotiation.
I think there should be a happy medium, like a rule that you can invite 3-5 classmates without inviting the whole class, as then it is clearly just inviting the friend group to a smaller party, and are not in "bullying" anyone in particular by not inviting them. The moment it gets to be more than that it starts to get selective. That would also enable parents to invite a few classmates over to a single more general family/friends birthday event, thereby keeping costs down, instead of having to choose between what party to hold if any. That, a school can have it as rule that parents liaise with the teacher before the invites go out, as to which option they are choosing, and who, if just the friends option, they plan to invite. Just so that the teacher can stay aware of any issues that may occur.

She only started doing it to piss off and alienate her aunt (father's sister) who insisted on pushing her to force a relationship with her father even though her father had publicly rejected her several times and she had expressed she was done with that kind of pain and just ready to move on, but now it's just cathartic to not even think of him as her father or family in anyway other then having his DNA.

That's a one-way street. Most courts in the US hold mothers to *much* lower standards, based on the Duluth Model.
It's a legal theory originally meant to protect domestic violence victims, but has been catastrophically oversimplified to "the woman is always right". Probably because it makes the job of a judge much easier in these messy cases. They don't have to think about it, they can just rubber-stamp half their docket away.

Story 4 about the stolen placard. As a disabled person, it's frustrating as all hell that this happens. It's painful and difficult when there's not enough spaces; add in that it's potentially not a handicapped person using those finite spaces and it turns into a kind of slap in the face. It costs money, time, effort/pain/frustration to get that placard so for it to then be stolen and used fraudulently is truly disgusting. It ends up being a double edged sword in that people become suspicious of those who use the placards since those people who "don't look disabled" are sometimes verbally or physically attacked, yet the fraudulent people who are good enough actors slide by and are accepted as disabled when they're actually not.

Handicap placards are rarely returned after the person whom they were issued to has died. Many times the Dallas city Police has done sweeps and have found 20% were for a deceased person. In our area, the majority of people that have them, drive around with them hanging in their windshield, blocking 20% of their forward view. Last year, two little girls were crossing a street corner and a woman ran over them, because she had a huge placard in her windshield.
