For all the hate people seem to have for the 40 S&W it just seems to keep on doing exactly what it was designed to do. It appears that one would have to really search to find a "bad" 40 defense loading as long as hollow points from the major ammo makers were used. Thanks for all you do, I always look forward to seeing your new content posted.
2 false alarms and some great performance! There's something about the talons that is aesthetically pleasing. That disruption around the end of the path from the G22 is amazing. I don't know if it's from tumbling, bounce back, or both, but more disruption is great!
The G22 is my all time favorite pistol from Glock's lineup. I put a fully supported barrel in mine + Wolff non-captured steel guide rod with a 20lbs spring also from Wolff. It feels way smoother & better lockup.
I normally carry heavy for caliber, 180gr HST and 180gr Ranger Bonded, but from tests back in the day(Tnoutdoor9, ScubOz) the 165gr Ranger -T was about as perfect a round as you could get... .70+expansion and 14-16inches of pen, with a nasty wound channel(of course they are nearly impossible to find now)...yea I know this is the 180 T which was also a top contender. Would love to see a 165gr Tseries test(If you can find some)
I know this was broadcast 10 months ago. It popped up on my phone today 2/16/24. I always read the results of ammo testing by numerous testers. I am convinced that the .40 S&W is the best self defense round with good ammunition. I am not discounting the 10 MM as being superior but I have read from many testers that a lot of 10 MM factory ammo is not loaded to its maximum performance. .40 S&W was the new modern day replacement to better the .45 ACP. It has more power and double the ammo capacity than the venerable .45 ACP. without the recoil. As best as an individual can get for a man stopper. The 9 MM is good but most of the time requiring 3 to 4 shots. P.S. it doesn’t “kick” any harder than the 9 MM. Thank you!
Was starting to lose hope with the Ranger T, glad the 180’s redeemed themselves. Use them in my 23 and 27. Awesome performance, thanks for another jelly test Tools!
Another awesome test. Pleasantly surprised to see the box velocity reached in the shorter barrel. Kudos to Winchester for meeting and exceeding the specs. .82 caliber expansion..Lordy Lordy what a forty!!!👍👍👍
Glad to see the T Series get some redemption finally, but I'd need to see alot more successful testing done before I relied on them to defend my life with.
What a difference, I remember how surprised I was to see the other tests. Fantastic preformed her big hoss. Making me love them Winchester ranger again. I sometimes carry a g23 but use gold dots or federal, got a few Hornady I might through in the rotation.

I use the Ranger-T in my Walther PPQ 4.5”. Great performance and accurate. Thank you for testing in both bare gel and through cloth. It was reassuring to see that my carry ammo is going to provide me plenty of protection if needed.
Hey Tools. I just had a thought. I know. I was just as shocked as you are. What if the depth of a bullet's hollow point was just as important to expansion through a clothing barrier as it's velocity? I'm thinking(I know!) that, unless you increase the depth of number of the layers of fabric, the compressed depth will remain constant, and a deeper HP will negate that particular parameter. I always think better after a bratwurst, sweet tea and Fritos. Thank you for an excellent test of these Freedom seeds! We're all really grateful.
I did carry 40 S&W Ranger T ammo in my P2000 with a 3.66" barrel. Then I converted to the 357 Sig version. I currently carry Underwood Ammo 125 Grain Gold Dots in the P2000 and P2000SK. My full size USP40 is staying a 40 because it didn't feed 357 very well.
I carry the 124 grain T series Plus P in my EDC which is a Glock 26. I haven't seen your video on the Ranger T series 124 grain plus P yet. My agency has been carrying that round since 2008 and so far, it has had some outstanding results on the streets ! In fact one of the top surgeons at Washington Hospital Center Med Star said it was a devastating round ! Thanks for all you do, I always look forward to seeing your new content on the performance of defensive rounds.
Thank you sir. That's actually one I haven't tested yet. I need to make a point of ordering some of those. I assumed the 127 +P+ would be the one to have but not so much.
That's some great and reassuring performance. The question arises as to why the other T-series did not do well. I don't remember what the velocity numbers on the other calibers tested were, but that might offer up a fps sweet spot with these. Another great test......Just rewatched the 9mm test 127 + , yep, the higher speed did not help that round at all. The handloader in me wants to slow that 9mm down a bit to see if that makes a difference. That goes against everything I thought I knew about loading HP rounds. The XTP bullet requires that higher velocity, maybe the T-series breaks the speed rule of thumb requirement.
If ya haven't already, get the rocky mountain MPR Nuke bullets a try! 124gr. 9mm has shown some wild results. They've improved their old design to work very well and consistently at 1100 fps. Be warned though, if you have a carry arm you want to load for, the ogive on those MPRs are very upfront, meaning you'll have to seat them deeper than you would think, and "match" or tight-throated chambers will have you seating it deep. Either load for a deep chambered 9mm, or get that barrel reamed.
I was surprised my department switched to these rounds from gold dots. During my last qualification they had me use up my gold dot ammo, then handed me this ammo. Glad to see it passed the cloth barrier test although living south florida i would rarely ever come up against someone wearing that much clothes. Curious to how it would perform against hard barriers like car doors, two layers of drywall, and most residential exterior doors.
Thank you for your commitment to continuing to test .40 S&W. It is a good, effectively, and practical round. I love the Underwood 200gr flat nose hard cast lead load. It’s listed at 1,000fps.
Now you need the post-apocalyptic clothing barrier. A layer of rat pelt, a layer of tin can, a layer of jacket leather, and a layer of sweat soaked t-shirt.

I did my own test with the 165 grain version of this bullet after seeing all of your t series test failing through cloth. Sadly i had the same experience. 4 layers of denim and into water jugs. The 165 grain talon failed to expand and penetrated all the jugs i had set up. I shot one into just water jugs and it was impressive but cant really trust them to open up. I tried to catch a 180grain Ranget T out of my Keltec Sub2000 using water jugs. I only had 6 jugs qnd qssumed 3 would do it. I blasted through all three and the 1/2 plywood behind it. I know for certain that they expanded. The expanded jacket from the first round embedded itself in the plywood, while the second went cleanly theougj without a trace (sizeable hole). Its a hell of a round. I like the 164 a little better, but thats just because the wxtra velocity and energy excites me.
Nice test results Tools. Makes me wonder why the others didn't perform this way. Hope you're having a good weekend. Be vigilant and always be safe my friend.
I remember I went down to Academy back in 2014 to buy a S&W Shield 9mm but they only had one in .40.....so I bought the .40 anyway and damn glad I did. Many don't like the .40 but I love that caliber. Of course I own other pistols in other calibers but I do love my 40. My favorite ammo has been Winchester PDX1 Defender 165gr .40 but this Ranger looks great too. Winchester makes good ammo pretty much all around. Thanks for the info and heads up on the Ranger.
I think the reason the .40 is so consistent is that the 9mm has a small cavity to start the expansion with, and the .45 is on the slow side and gets hurt because of that. The .40 has a decent sized cavity to get the expansion started, and it's fast enough also.
Nice performance ! Another good option ! I'll have to search these. I napped this afternoon and just baked midnight banana bread, time to nap again...thanks for info !

I sure would love to get a bouquet of those FLOWERS!!!! Very beautiful!!!! And devastating all in its own!!!! Nice test Nice results. gonna be looking for these during my next ammo purchase!!!
I wonder what specifically made it perform better? Maybe something do with sectional density and/or just larger overall cavity (more to catch and expand) Very interesting
2 for 2 there. Outstanding for both rounds out of the Glock’s. You said that is what we should be seeing. Great test and commentary. Wonder why the 115gr and 124gr 9mm is not showing up for duty? That’s puzzling to me. Anyway, thanks for sharing and be safe. Way cool 😎 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Redemption achieved! Good looking round in the .40 S&W for sure. I believe I prefer it through the shorter barreled 27.
Great performance.😎👍
this is good to see, they definitely performed well.
Yessir. Love to see stuff like this.😎👍
I loaded some XTP’s 147gr for my 9mm awhile back i got to try them soon
😎👍
The G22 is my all time favorite pistol from Glock's lineup. I put a fully supported barrel in mine + Wolff non-captured steel guide rod with a 20lbs spring also from Wolff. It feels way smoother & better lockup. I might buy the G27 little brother some day.
Nice😎👊
Awesome performance! Wonder why some of the other Rangers didn't do so well?
Makes me wonder too.
I sure would love to get a bouquet of those FLOWERS!!!!
Very beautiful!!!! And devastating all in its own!!!!
Nice test Nice results. gonna be looking for these during my next ammo purchase!!!
💥🌻🌻🌻💥
Awesome tests, thanks.
Thank you sir.😎👍
Those look nasty when they're fully expanded. Absolutely fantastic performance.
Another good jelly test Tools Stay Safe Stay 2A Strong 🇺🇸
Thank you sir.😎👊
I wonder what specifically made it perform better? Maybe something do with sectional density and/or just larger overall cavity (more to catch and expand)
Very interesting
😎👍
2 for 2 there. Outstanding for both rounds out of the Glock’s. You said that is what we should be seeing. Great test and commentary. Wonder why the 115gr and 124gr 9mm is not showing up for duty? That’s puzzling to me. Anyway, thanks for sharing and be safe. Way cool 😎 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you sir. Think I'm gonna have to order some 124 +P now to see what it does.😎👍
Well I gota say I like what I'm seeing in your tests!! A LOT! Thank ya Tools!
Pretty as a picture!!
Thank you ma'am. Definitely some winners here.😎👍
I’m wondering if that is a newer production box or if it’s a older box ? Maybe they tweaked something. Just a thought. 🔫💨🍮👑🛠
Same ol same ol. Seems like some cailbers just got it and some don't.😆
@@ToolsandTargets I’d still be nervous about them not preforming like they should. If someone just watched this video and said “cool I’m good to go with my tiny pew pew 380” idk just a thought.🤷♀️
No longer have a .40, but if I did, this is probably what I would use! Good test, Tools!!!
Thank you sir.😎👍
Ranger T in 40S&W (labeled law enforcement) 155 gr 1200 fps in water jugs will flatten out like a lead pancake.
😎👊
I am a firm believer in the .40 cal, great stopping power, that’s all I carry.
I was glad to see this do well. Gotta pick up a few more boxes.
Nice expansion
165gr seems to be the sweet spot for .40 cal
If these got any sweeter, you'd become a diabetic just from handling them.
Beautiful. Would be a great round for my P229.
These were the one caliber of T Series that did fantastic through the cloth.
@@ToolsandTargets Yah, I saw the 9mm test.
Great video T&T!
I’ve got two boxes of this exact ammo.
Thank you sir. I have quite a bit of it myself.
Thing is, 40 is a built all to hell 10mm short. It's a beast from a tiny package.
Redemption! Glad to see those do well. Nasty looking round. Long live the 40. Good test 👍🏻 🇺🇸
They would slice and dice for sure.😎
👍👍good testing on the 40 the bullets look grate
💥😎👊💥
Absolutely viscious strikes! Best performance rom T series I've ever seen. I still won't pay ten bucks more than HST'S or Gold Dot.
Defintiely some good stuff.😎👍
