The terminal performance of the 40 is superior to the 9mm. No debate about that. However, it is interesting that the 9mm gave almost equal penetration. So, if the shooter could get more shots down range with the 9mm (due to the lighter recoil) it might be argued that greater terminal performance could be achieved by the 9mm since more shots would hit the objective. But, for just one single shot the 40 is obviously superior. I own some 9's and a couple of 10's, but no 40's. I need to buy a G23. I am sure I would love the 40 if I gave it more of a chance. Thanks for the great test. Both rounds did really well. Keep the 40 S&W tests coming. It's a good cartridge and deserves the attention. Its additional ft/lbs and momentum over the 9mm is noticeably.
Using the shortest barrels does make the most sense. My worry with not testing in longer barrels is if the bullet gets too much velocity from the longer barrel it won't penetrate properly bc of too much expansion. If the hollow expands out of a short barrel and the penetration is at least 15inches I would trust it to penetrate fine out of a longer barrel
Both of these rounds penetrate adequately through longer barrels. Through my Beretta92FS I got around 15" & my Glock22 16.50" both same Federal punch rounds.
They tried the 40 S&W but then the agencies dropped it in favor of the 9 mm with improved bullets. Less recoil and blast and less wear and tear in the guns, lower cost, and better qualification scores. Some people may scoff and say the agencies are hiring too many wimps so they had to drop the 40 S&W but the bottom line is that the 9 mm seems to work out best for the agencies.
Physics dictates that during expansion as the petal are perpendicular to the C/L of the bullet the 40 will have a greater momentary diameter, thus creating a larger wound cavity until the petals fold back against the bullet. Once again, another great video. .40 S&W rules.
I'll stick with my .40S&W for daily carry and backup to a 12ga pump for home defense. The only use I still have for my 9 Minimal pistol is range time as the ammo is cheaper and more plentiful and I can't tell the difference in recoil or muzzle blast between the two.

Good one Mr. Tools, I got a few boxes of the 9mm on sale earlier in the year, not my primary but awesome for a backup plan when the gold dots and HST’s run dry. I’m impressed with the 40, I’m a gold dot guy for 40 all day but that’s a good demonstration for penetration.
This is a case where I'd choose the 9 all day long. If I want to step up in power and accept the capacity penalty from what I can get from 9mm, especially +p or +p+ I'd go .357 sig. If I want to step up in caliber or bullet weight I'm going 10mm. The .40 recoils as hard as the .357 with the same capacity and has less power. And the 10mm can be had in a much larger range of loads and can achieve power levels far beyond anything the .40 can accomplish.

Nice!! Great performance from both. I was a little worried with the lower velocities but they proved me wrong. Both would be a devastating wound for sure. I like the head to head from time to time. Awesome stuff as always my friend 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
A really food representation of how far good bullet technology has pushed the 9mm to perform similarly to 40 and 45. Maybe not quite as much temporary stretch cavity since it has less energy, but a bigger final diameter. Energy in of itself doesn't kill anything when it comes to pistol bullets at pistol velocitys. Once you get into rifle velocity's 2000+ fps the temporary stretch cavity does actually add to the wounding of flesh though. Pistol bullets poke holes in things, find a caliber you can accurately poke holes with that will penetrate deep enough and expand reliably and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
@@randallflores-qr8cs Finding 380 that penetrates deeply enough and expands reliably isn't easy. Most people use fmj's which don't create any wounding at all like hollow points do. 9mm is readily available, low recoil, and has many very good options for self defense.

Been testing some new hunting loads because the partitions I usually use are so hard to find. Federal even in their premium hunting rounds never come close to listed velocities. If it was just a little bit I’d understand but I’m talking about 100s of fps and im constantly seeing it from everything they sale. Out of a 24” barrel I shouldn’t be 220 fps slow in 308 or 243. Even much cheaper Winchester power point is measured much better and more consistent. lol sorry for the rant I’d love to see you test a few hunting type rounds like you did leading into deer season last year. Punch is nice but I still prefer HST. I do actually have punch in my S&W Shield 45 but that's only because I bought it brand new 5 months ago and my local shop had punch but not HST. My other two carry guns in my rotation have HST in both 40 S&W but I picked the 180 grain, and my Hellcat has the HST 124gr +P since it's only a 3-inch Barrel to get the extra velocity. The test looked great in this video 🙂
I love my 40, but I've got some 9MMs for just in case use, because they have much more ammo availability. I would do 40 all day long though, as my preferred round. Mr. Tools&Targets has really got me wanting to try out 10MM with Buffalo Bore. That's the biggest pistol caliber needed, I'd say.
I'd carry either one with confidence. I have some of the 9mm, got'em when I couldn't find HSTs. They ride the bench now, playing second string to the HST and Elite Defender. My go-to in 40 is HST and Ranger. Another excellent test!!
The modern 9mm proponents point out new ballistic tech has made 9mm more lethal than ever. This is very true. However, that all also applies to modern 40, making it that much better.
If on sale I would pick up that 9mm all day. Both even that 40 with the huge cloth catching maw of a hollow point didn't even care about the clothing. Both were exceptional.

Oh man, for whatever the reason, that 40S&W looked like it was bouncing around at the terminal end of the wound track. I am sure it is frame rate, slomo function of the camera, etc... But the slomo of it on a 55 inch TV is kinda cool.😎 Punch is reliable.👊
Judging by the comments I’ve read your “fistfight” title is genius, I don’t own a 40 myself I prefer 9mm but what I can say is one shot center mass from both of these rounds would to the job.
For .4 inch longer and less capacity and more kick (larger diameter always give more kick even .45 that have less pressure usually give more kick than even compare to much higher pressure +p 9mm its a how quick hot gas left the barrel that make a kick so larger aways make its quicker and harder kick action), I don’t think this difference on impact worth trade off its too close
Neither one was loaded very hot! They would get the job done. I wouldn’t buy them unless I got a great deal! I’ll stick with HSTs +p124 , or underwood 115gr +p+, underwood extreme defender 68 gr +p. Those are what I have in my 9 mm. I would love to see the 68 gr underwood in 9mm tested!! The have +p as well. Thanks Tools

2 successes. I would like to see a bit more velocity from both but I am not complaining with these great results. Many thanks for the good demonstration & data.
Punch seems to do pretty well across the board.😎👊
With the penetration and expansion they showed, there's no reason for more velocity.
People get too hung up on velocity.
Nice!! Great performance from both. I was a little worried with the lower velocities but they proved me wrong. Both would be a devastating wound for sure. I like the head to head from time to time. Awesome stuff as always my friend 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Appreciate ya, brother.😎👊
😎👊
By that logic, why not carry .380? lighter/easier to conceal guns, less recoil.
@@randallflores-qr8cs Finding 380 that penetrates deeply enough and expands reliably isn't easy. Most people use fmj's which don't create any wounding at all like hollow points do. 9mm is readily available, low recoil, and has many very good options for self defense.
We really appreciate the updates on rounds you ran without the clothing barrier the first time around, and especially appreciate you running the short barrels! Put'em through the ringer.
Thanks for the tests.
😎👊
I carry no less than a .40 cal with 165 gr. Ranger "T" or Gold Dots. But my perfered sidearm calibers were the 10mm or the .45 ACP. I like the leverage on the streets Lone Bear!
💥😎👊💥
The 40 is peeled more back in the end which means while traveling through it expanded more and peeled back further .
Nice test. Federal seems to doing a good job of engineering their products.
Nice to see two good ones! Since I don’t own a .40, the 9mm. will do just fine. And I do have some for the LC9 so I’m glad to see it works well.
Usually priced good too.😎👍
Very cool comparison between the 40 Smith & Wesson and the 9 mm. 👊🇺🇸. Thanks Tools.
Thank you sir.😎👊
I have carried both of these rounds, like them both, just depends on the situation and the right tools.
The 9 is a pretty projectile!😮❤❤❤
some ppl forget that the sun heats the ground that then heats the air. (when sunny)
so the ground isnt 85F its sometimes 120F and thats your skin in the sun. thats HOT
You aint kidding. Even at 80, that sun directly overhead is no joke.😆
4d 4 the win
😎👊
Awesome ballistic gel test. Would be confident in either. 👍👍
What’s really weird., I’ve been seeing boat loads of .40 law enforcement trade ins on the market lately in particular G22s I mean if you want a .40s&w man you can find some deals when it comes to G22 LE trade ins,,, I think PSA was just selling them for 299 the other day .I also see G23 sprinkled in .. of course you also see a lot of G17 but some of those must be upgrades because a lot of them are like Gen3
This review is highly useful for me. Great job!
Good Videos as always. I am glad you are able to provide good comparisons between 9mm vs 40 S&W. I've been torn deciding which caliber to conceal carry, ammo tests keep indicating the 40ty is the "problem solver". Now gotta find the right tool to carry.
Thank you sir.😎👊
T&T says "he needs to do a sort of update video"....its a good reason to do some shooting imo..great update T&T, i don't shoot 40 s&w but i shoot 9mm and the federal punch is 1 of 3 defense ammo i use in my edc, good stuff imo because i trust it
Thank you sir. Punch seems to be a solid choice in most calibers, from what a can remember.😎👊
Living in a state with a 10-round magazine limit, I only carry 40 or 357 Sig. No capacity advantage to carrying 9 here, so it's a G27 over a G26.
Another great test! I think if federal dropped the premium tag and nickle plated case from the punch lineup they should also drop the price. Federal is on my shit list lately. Either way you are the best on this platform!!!
I don't know if you know any ER Doctors, but they are the one you should interview regarding internal Damage. I know what they are going to say, but your views may find it interesting should you locate one to go on camera.
I'm sure they're some TH-cam videos of that exact scenario.
😎👊
Enlighten us uncle fuster
I like that 1cm bullet, you only sacrifice 1 round of every 10 vs the .9cm but the damagenis way superior on the 1cm caliber.
Thanks
😎👊
Very impressive on both caliber 's
I use the 9 in my P938 Scorpion and the 40 in my G27
I don’t care what any of these 9mm guys say .40 is top dog. My G22 with 165 grain gold dots is top notch! The 155 underwood rounds at 1300 are rowdy
BB wakes up a 10mm for sure.😎👊
I'd carry either one with confidence. I have some of the 9mm, got'em when I couldn't find HSTs. They ride the bench now, playing second string to the HST and Elite Defender. My go-to in 40 is HST and Ranger. Another excellent test!!
😎👊
Both are great rounds, job well done, thanks brother
Thank you sir.😎👊
Pretty cool bullets. I still stick with Ranger-T for my 9mm. I think they’re hard to beat. They are more difficult to get your hands on though 🤔
The modern 9mm proponents point out new ballistic tech has made 9mm more lethal than ever. This is very true. However, that all also applies to modern 40, making it that much better.
Yeah, I never understand that argument. It's not like every other round has been in a ballistic coma while 9mm improved.😆
Punch does it again
If on sale I would pick up that 9mm all day. Both even that 40 with the huge cloth catching maw of a hollow point didn't even care about the clothing. Both were exceptional.
Respectfully, comparing the nines to the 40 is like comparing the 22 with the 44
Thanks Tools for another great vid......Lordy Lordy I love me some of that freakin' 40!!....mercy.........
💥😎💥
I have 9mm stocked up because we have to😅 but my primary will always be 40cal 155-165 grain. My specialty is 10mm in 180grain.
Nice one tools!!! I just purchased my first full size 9mm pistol Glock 17 wiff 4.5” barrel it really gets those hot +P loads justa movin down range…I can’t wait to see you test those DoubleTap 147 Grain +P Bonded Defense to show these .40 lovers what a Real 9mm can do when loaded the RIGHT WAY like they used to back in the day💯
The 40 blew up the 9 maintains its structure left a clean wound track, and longer wound track before it collapsed.
Very interesting test. Although I use the HST, the Punch in any caliber is a good option.
Recently, my big box store prices on these nearly match the HSTs. But I picked up some of these in 45 a couple years ago. So happy to see good results on this test. Thanks Tools.
I carry a G45 for my EDC and I love it but I've been wanting to build a G23X for a while. I like 9mm and I think it's a great choice for self defense but I've always believed .40 S&W is superior to 9mm
Oh man, for whatever the reason, that 40S&W looked like it was bouncing around at the terminal end of the wound track. I am sure it is frame rate, slomo function of the camera, etc... But the slomo of it on a 55 inch TV is kinda cool.😎
Punch is reliable.👊
I watched it back several times while I was editing. It does look pretty wild.
Judging by the comments I’ve read your “fistfight” title is genius, I don’t own a 40 myself I prefer 9mm but what I can say is one shot center mass from both of these rounds would to the job.
It definitely brings out some opinions.😎👊
I've been at this testing expansion many, many years. the bigger the expansion and most retaining weights is the perfect combination for any given calibers. this 40 and 9mm test are perfect performance. I trust this testing so much I wouldn't hesitate to deer hunt with either one which is legal here in north carolina during deer rifle season. because of my disabilities I considering this deer season pistol/ revolver hunting only during rifle season. what better way to test your self defense ammunition than live deer. gained experience and groceries from the field ,that's win, win. if this is not the best test video I have seen it would run a very high second place.lol. as always, papa wishing you well. 😊
Good test Tools God Bless and take care.
Thank you sir.😎👊
I use the .45 Punch for my EDC. My wife uses the 9mm Punch for her EDC. This just confirms my decision. I still wish you would do a carbine test on the 9MM Punch
Excellent test. I'd love to see the same test using HST.
Interesting. I was just thinking about .40S&W the other day. I might consider getting one sometime.
40 S&W FTW ... again ... 💪😃👍
The test definitely shows how modern bullet designs and lead alloys have improved the 9mm. I'll continue standing by the 40S&W ... just superior performance even in short barrels.
Love me the Friday evening tools show🍻
Appreciate ya, brother!😎👊
40 is still a fantastic round. Packs more energy and makes a bigger hole. I still carry a 45 or 9mm 99% of the time though lol
Punchy punchy...... the wireless hole puncher!
Nice revisit test I had no doubt they would perform and no doubt the 40 is superior I still don't understand the 40 s&w haters other than price I prefer them
Good stuff.😎👊
I think punch gives you about some of the best performance you can get for the money.
10mm is king but that's another video so 40s&w I'll pick over 9mm.
Both rounds performed nicely. Have some 9mm Punch to back up my HST’s, haven’t tried any 40’s yet. Carry 9’s mainly because that’s what our dept issues. Was disappointed when we switched from 40’s to 9’s, due to current trends. No doubt the 40 hits harder. Thanks for the jelly test Tools!
