It has been my experience from testing .40 S&W ammo for police use that just about anything in a hollow point from a major manufacturer works pretty darned well. When you chose between 155, 165, and 180 grain loads, you are pretty much choosing based on your preference for the level of the recoil and barrier penetration characteristics, and I don't think I've ever tested a really "bad" .40 round from a major manufacturer. This is not totally surprising because the .40 was designed with police work in mind. I still have a SIG P229 and a Smith and Wesson M&P, and in the unlikely event I ever found myself back in a patrol car, I'd be wearing one of those two pistols over any other caliber I could choose, except that I might drop the old .357 SIG barrel in the P229 and be just as happy. One reason I still like the .40 is that pretty much anything you stuff in it works pretty well. When my small department tested the heavy for caliber 9mm 147 grain Ranger T in tests conducted with several other agencies, we didn't find it to be awful, and it did pretty well on the barrier penetration tests, even though expansion seemed muted once it hit the gel. It seemed pretty comparable to a Speer Gold Dot in the same weight, again not surprising since they are direct competitors, much like Pepsi and Coke. In the end, at that time, we didn't see enough advantage to a caliber change, decided to keep our .40's, and loaded them with Ranger loads. I understand that a few years later they did switch to 9mm pistols and settled on the 124 grain +P HST load because they got a great deal on it.
If I ran a 🚔 or were a procurement, contract officer, I'd opt for a HST 124gr +P 9mm or the Hornady Critical Duty 124gr +P 9mm. Many gun owners & armed professionals are not aware that gun makers, S&W Ruger Glock etc use 124gr to R&D 9mm(9x19mm).
@@DavidLLambertmobile I know there are arguments to be made for the heavier bullets in 9mm, but my sources at Federal/Speer tell me that the performance of the 124 +P is essentially identical to their 147 grain offerings, and that they offer both to accommodate the preferences of departmental purchasers, as they do with the standard pressure load for departments that won't use +P. They have also told me that the 124 +P round needs at least a 4 inch barrel to show a material advantage over their same weight standard pressure load. So I tend to agree with you and have standardized on the 124 grain +P HST. In my subcompact pistols it really doesn't recoil more than standard pressure, and is only 30 fps faster in something like a Shield. So I run it in all my 9mm pistols and get decent accuracy and sights that shoot to point of aim/impact. But if for some reason I cannot get it, I'll happily use the 124 standard pressure round, especially in my shorter barreled pistols. Cheers!

First, thank you Paul for all of the time you invest in these videos. My personal choice for every day carry is a Springfield XD sub-compact in 40 S&W. I had initially selected Winchester PDX1 as my carry ammo until I found an abnormality in the crimp of the bullet during loading. I found 14 out of the box of 20 that were severely over crimped. I contacted Winchester and they resolved the issue, however they failed initial quality checks to keep it from leaving the factory that way. After receiving the coupon for a replacement box I first opened the box to check the crimp and those too were over crimped. Ultimately I chose the Sig Sauer Elite Performance V-Crown and saved more than 4 dollars per box of 20. Your videos covering that ammunition further vailidate my choice. Once again, thank you.
Must say that the many reviews Paul does is very detailed and to real life as not just gel but uses other rounds to compare to what he is testing but!!! I love your no BS style of just putting it out there, Paul. You do some great testing on ammo. These are some of the most informative real world type testing of ammo videos out there.
This goes to show how much the specific load in each cartridge type ("caliber") matters--not the brand, series, or even the basic projectile design, but each specific load. I select loads for each cartridge type based on multiple test results, at least (your meat targets being one of them). That said, there are other factors when choosing between two equally effective loads. For one thing, I like how the Winchester Ranger-T, Bonded, and PDX1 series all have completely sealed cartridges (both at the primers and bullets) and are extremely resistant to bullet setback--this makes the ammo very resilient to environmental conditions outside of a sealed, dehumidified ammo can. This wouldn't make me choose the underperforming 147-grain 9mm Ranger-T, but it is one reason I've chosen this series for .40 S&W (either bullet weight, 165 or 180 grains) over others that are just about as effective and even slightly more consistent (e.g. Federal HST) or less expensive (e.g. Winchester White Box JHP). It gives me some peace of mind regarding reliability under potentially adverse conditions. Additionally, I tend to avoid the Speer Gold Dot series because they are very prone to bullet setback. I like their products and use quite a bit of Speer training ammo, but for defensive use my personal preference--even though it's probably unnecessary--is for more physically robust ammo that will work right even if one submerges it in water or oil, and won't allow the bullet to be pushed into the case, which can raise pressure to dangerous levels.
People are quick to accept ANYTHING positive said about 9MM as pure gospel, but refute any praise about .40 S&W. There is a LOT of misinformation going around on forums, and every time someone tries to make the claim that there's no difference between the two...it's just a claim with no had evidence. For some reason people want to perceive 9MM to be better performing than it actually is, by doing so they immediately minimize .40 S&W or any other caliber that's not 9MM by deeming it 'useless'. Just because 9MM is more practical and easier to shoot that does NOT mean that it's the most effective. Calibers like .40 S&W, .357 SIG or even .45 ACP kind of fall into this subcategory that's an upgrade from 9MM. Although it seems like .40/.357 SIG are slightly better options than .45 ACP due to power and capacity. Anybody that honestly believes power isn't a plausible aspect in modern ballistics is a moron, sadly there are a lot of morons these days. The problem with .45 ACP is that it's a somewhat outdated caliber that's only loaded at half the pressure of .40 or 9MM, Glock tried to address this problem with the widely panned .45 GAP. Personally I'd rather get good performance AND good capacity, which is why I tend to go with .40 S&W. It's an extremely underappreciated duty/carry round!
I know what you mean about 45 acp, and i wouldnt choose it for concealed carry outside in the streets, but for home defense?? Well i think its the best for home defense because it has the least penetration of all while giving the most expansion and great tissue damage. What you think?
Thank you Paul as another viewer stated in another post you have video in all weather. I really appreciate your dedication to your followers. Just down to earth great solid information that, in my opinion, is very useful.
One thing I really enjoy about the videos is Paul doesn't let the weather get in the way of shooting. Rain or snow, the video keeps rolling. I like that.
With videos like this Paul removes all internet "hearsay" and brings clarity and truth to the real life. No words to say except one huge THANK YOU Paul.
Looks like fantastic ammo for my Sig Sauer P229. As soon as I use up all this 180gr Gold Dot ammo I have I will give this a try. Great video as usual Paul.
Great. The .40 S&W seems to perform adequately regardless of the brand. The Ranger T leaves prettier projectiles. Is it worth the cost? "You be the judge."
40 definitely seems to have the right stuff associated with it. It has far more than enough performance to get the job done without living on the edge like 380acp and to a smaller degree 9mm.
+Brian Olsen I feel that is mostly in part because .40 S&W is typically loaded to about 80% maximum level. Most factory .40 S&W loads seem to have the same velocity range depending on bullet weight, and a few I've taken apart to see whats inside would seem to indicate this. Not to mention, it's the only way they can get a 180gr projectile moving at around 1,000 to 1,100 fps from a 4 inch barrel or so. It's why you typically dont see a +P .40 S&W load out there. That and I suppose that's what 10mm is for if you want to go that route. I personally dont view .380 ACP as a "living on the edge" kind of caliber in terms of performance. I find most factory .380 ACP to be loaded to similar levels as well. The biggest disparity in .380 ACP for a long time was hollow point ammunition, but now there are plenty of reliable and reputable brand of JHP ammo that deliver consistent performance on the .380 ACP. But typically any caliber that is loaded to maximum or near maximum from the factory comes out this way. .45 ACP is a prime example as it's been loaded nearly the exact same now for 100 years.
Right, with 9mm you have to be more picky with personal defense loads, and then there is the common issue of practice loads being noticeably lighter. While .40 S&W is not entirely free of such issues, if you buy commonly available factory ammunition, then you probably won't have any issues--with the common stuff, virtually all personal defense loads are effective enough, and virtually all practice loads are stout enough for effective training. It's like .45 ACP in this way--not as much to concern oneself about.
The T series used to be part of Winchester’s law enforcement ammo line. Not sure if it still is or not. The T is rumored to stand for Talon as in Black Talon. Every round I’ve ever seen recovered expanded like crazy. It is or was available with a bonded projectile to limit jacket separation as well. I use the +P in 45 acp in my kimber ultra carry.
I bought a bunch of this .40 Ranger T series police trade-in ammo in both 180 and 165 grain and from your test I'm glad I did. Even the cheap WWB looks like it did pretty well and every Walmart around here has a few boxes of that in stock. Thanks for another great test!
I swear I should have tied a roll of fleece blankets together when I was in asscrackastan. That seems to stop bullets better than a vest. Lighter weight too. Then when it got cold, just unroll for sleepin'. Love the meat target
Ranger T was used by lots of PDs a few years back before the FBI NEW 9mm is good as 40 cal report. It;s a great time to buy a USED dept trade in Beretta 40 and Ranger T now.
Hey, Paul! The Winchester 180gr T Series is the Cartridge my Department used before I retired. I'm going to start caring it again. I stopped using it in my EDC, now that I'm a Civilian because, I'm a bit leery of Juries should I ever become involved in a Civilian Shooting, Heaven forbid! In hindsight, it's always best to use what you train with. Thanks for the good video.
When I was a police officer our department used Winchester Rangers. I never had to shoot anyone (thank God), but on the range those things had some serious blast, at least in 45acp anyway. Most of the guys in our department carried a Glock 22 40SW, at the closest distance at the range (about 7 feet) they would just punch a hole in the target. But when I fired a round out of the Glock 21 it would blow the paper off the wood frame half the time.... it was like I had set off a howitzer! : )
And once again another great video bursting full of good, practical information coming from one of the most experienced gun tuber with the best credibility. Thank You Mr. Paul Harrell! Your channel is top notch!
I'm glad you tested the WWB 180 gr JHP. These have been showing good performance in online testing and are actually a good budget option if you had to have something from a brick and morter in a hurry. It wouldn't be my first choice but unlike most entry level JHP ammo it actually performs well. The WWB JHP in 9mm are far less impressive.
Excellent again. Seeing with your own eyes is to me the gold standard. I am a fan of Hornady Critical Defense because the local Leo's use the Critical Duty. It is a legal reason, if I ever end up in court I'm using a civilian version of the Leo ammo. And it does preform very well. This is based on perceptions from my attorney of the local views of law enforcement and public. And yes he's a criminal defense attorney. That's what you will need. I think a current day comprehensive video on the aftermath of a shooting would be great Paul.
What?!?!? I bought a bunch of WWB .40 S&W personal protection on your recommendation, Paul...lol! One of the online stores was practically giving it away, so I’m good for the rest of my life with the amount I ordered. Thanks for sharing!
Great video Paul! I have always been a fan of the 40.S&W people always tell me how the 9mm is just as powerful, not in my own experience testing the 2 40 is far more powerful Imho
Thanks for the presentation Paul! .40 is a very underrated caliber for civilian use, but Law Enforcement sees how effective it really can be. I look forward to further videos!
In 2020 more state & local PDs went to 9x19mm BUT many cops, troopers had no problems with 165/155 gr .40 guns. The CBP, US Border Patrol issued Beretta 96Ds & P229s for years.
I like the new opening but I wish you would show your medals they mean something to some of us keep up the good work and I'm glad to see both those gun seem to fit in your hand well
Nicely done. The Ranger T was the issue ammo at my agency the last 5 or 6 yrs i worked there. Mainly because it was relatively cheap on the state contract. It had a good reputation, and always worked well on the occasional deer i had to humanely dispatch. Glad to see it did well on the meat target. Before that, we always carried Gold Dots, and i liked those also. Although i did have an interesting dud/defective round of it once. Thanks for everything you do. Time for the 45ACP version!
I love the new intro! My only suggestion is to make Paul's classic line of "you be the judge" full-volume at the end. I think that's a fantastic cap to the intro, but having the audio almost muted by the music undercuts it quite a bit. :)
This is 4 years later, but I was just looking at this ammo on the web today with very little information. Now, thanks to Paul, I will order some and see if any shipping will carry it!!
Paul's best advice on fitness is presented in his intro at 00:08. Every day do 200 classic FBI combat draws, and you are fine. My butt got so big from it, people thought I was a track cycling champion. Paul's execution in the intro is a bit sloppy, the real deal you find here: th-cam.com/video/1ftXWvkPj1k/w-d-xo.html
I thought he was just being silly when he had said "shoot like your grandfather", I had no clue that used to be a real government recommended shooting stance. I'm all for learning from those who came before us, but who the fuck said that stance was a good idea?
+DanGarbageCan. Those were pioneering times, many ideas had been picked up, got into training, and then got forgotten within a few years or a decade. As far as I can remember, the primary idea behind this one was to reduce your size as a target. When you fell over while quickly stepping to the side also introduced the element of genuine surprise.
Once again we see the .40 outperform the 9mm. 9mm keyboard commandos crying all over the world. But seriously, I only shoot .40 and 9mm. I enjoy them equally, just like to watch videos that make 9mm fanboys cry.
people that have no clue on ballistic, they always say 9mm preformed almost the same as 40sw and power, but the fact is 40sw and 45acp is closer in performances then 40sw to 9mm, 40 to 9 is a bigger gap
hkp 30ls 40 & 9mm are all I pretty much carry and shoot anymore. I gave up 45 years ago because anything the 45 can do the 40 can do or do better. And 45 +P pretty much mimics the 40 with a bit more recoil and less capacity typically. Although I do like seeing the tactitards 9mm ninjas get bent out of shape when their "9mm can do everything just as well" comes up short.
This has been my carry round for 2 years in my g23 gen 3. I pay $52 for 50 rds at my local shop but that box last me 18 months so I don't care. These are Devastating in 230g 45 also.
J. Rob. Apparently you have never read gun website comment sections or listened to internet commandos yell at you about their opinions... There are even people that claim 9mm is equal to 357 magnum...
Yeah apparently greater mass at similar velocity DOES NOT in fact impart more energy onto the desired target. I know.... defies the laws of physics... Bla Bla... but if the FBI and internet say so then Newton be damned!
It's not that they are the same. Each one has it's strengths and weaknesses. The 9mm is just better over all when it comes to handling, recoil, accuracy and follow up shots. Not to mention cost of ammo. 40 is great. Shoot what you want. I prefer 9mm
Thanks for another good video. I like seeing real tests of these bullets. The moral of the story still seems to be that Winchester "white box" is a good choice most of the time. I've bought some Federal "white box" for my 9mm. I need to try this someday.
Yeah these in 40sw are top Notch! Other calibers not so much but the 40 with these is serious stuff! I’ve tested them with my own meat target and clothing and was impressed! These rangers in 40 are right up there with Federal HST

I enjoy my 40s, great info!!!
Thanks Paul! I’m pleased with the results as this is my department’s issued ammo. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for your endurance in weather to bring us these excellent videos.
Thank you Paul
I just bought a .40, so thanks for giving me some food for thought.
0:13 you embraced the meme. I'm so proud.
Such great videos. No nonsense. Just practical knowledge!
Beautiful explanation. Couldn’t agree more.
Awesome work Paul!
yay 30.
Awesome pork Paul!
It's usually the inexpensive HP ammo that out performs. Nice to see the T-Series come out on top
Paul lives up to the Post Office moto, rains, sleet, snow.... Unlike the actual Post Office.
Top notch video. To me your test seem to provide the best representation of how these products will preform.
Nice work as always Paul thanks for your support
Thanks Paul, I appreciate your efforts and the sharing of the results!
Very interesting and of course just plain fun to see. Great video Paul.
Snow man harrell.
Calm, cool, collected.
Eagle eyes.
Humble confidence.
Superior performance.
Such a boss.
I Like the way you lay it out and ask us to draw our own conclusion. you are a great teacher. Thank You Paul.
That is the beauty of the .40 caliber. Even shit ammo is better than 9mm
Paul, as always, an education in 6 minutes, thank you for your dedication and hard work! its appreciated.
Pretty impressive stuff Paul. Thanks.
Ranger T was used by lots of PDs a few years back before the FBI NEW 9mm is good as 40 cal report. It;s a great time to buy a USED dept trade in Beretta 40 and Ranger T now.
Neither rain, sleet, or snow will stop Paul from bring us another excellent video. Thanks Paul.
Another superb video. Thanks much, Paul. You're the best.
Another excellent video, thanks!
Best on the internet
Thanks for another great video Paul. Your videos are always concise, informative, and on target (no pun intended).
Major props for shooting DA for the first shot through the chrono...
I absolutely LOVE the "70's style" cop draw and fire in the intro. You are too funny to me, Paul!
The new mic is VERY noticeable. Great improvement.
Love my M&P .40. This video really helps in choosing a good defense ammo for it.
*That.... INTRO...*
*I am SO GRATEFUL, to have found this channel.*
Love the glasses. Always a good day when Paul drops a video.
Great demonstration!!! Thanks Paul!!
The video I wait for every week.
Excellent video Paul. Thanks for the hard work.
What?!?!? I bought a bunch of WWB .40 S&W personal protection on your recommendation, Paul...lol! One of the online stores was practically giving it away, so I’m good for the rest of my life with the amount I ordered. Thanks for sharing!
After I saw this, I got a few boxes myself. Looks like it should do the job.
40 is actually back in my favor. Good data. Thanks for the video!
RIP Paul. We miss ya
Great video Paul! I have always been a fan of the 40.S&W people always tell me how the 9mm is just as powerful, not in my own experience testing the 2 40 is far more powerful Imho
9mm is the Honda Civic of handgun calibers.
@@playerzero2236 ...and 40 is the Cadillac...but 45 is the Kenworth.
I like the new opening but I wish you would show your medals they mean something to some of us keep up the good work and I'm glad to see both those gun seem to fit in your hand well
Good video! Love the new intro too
Once again I’m inspired to get out to the range. Your videos make me want to practice, practice, practice.
Thanks for the quality content always.
Thanks for another great video Paul!
I love the 40 S&W. I keep 1,000 plus rounds of T Series and SXT.
The Dry Yet Comedic Accurate Color commentary Besides the Obvious Facts that you bring I enjoy these Videoz. Paul is My Man
Hey Paul, I am interested in seeing a video by you on the topic of fitness.
creatine user - and proper mustache maintenance.
creatine user- lift weights. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.
Paul's best advice on fitness is presented in his intro at 00:08. Every day do 200 classic FBI combat draws, and you are fine. My butt got so big from it, people thought I was a track cycling champion. Paul's execution in the intro is a bit sloppy, the real deal you find here:
th-cam.com/video/1ftXWvkPj1k/w-d-xo.html
I thought he was just being silly when he had said "shoot like your grandfather", I had no clue that used to be a real government recommended shooting stance.
I'm all for learning from those who came before us, but who the fuck said that stance was a good idea?
+DanGarbageCan. Those were pioneering times, many ideas had been picked up, got into training, and then got forgotten within a few years or a decade. As far as I can remember, the primary idea behind this one was to reduce your size as a target. When you fell over while quickly stepping to the side also introduced the element of genuine surprise.
Thank you Paul.
I use these rounds in my EDC :-)
You can't go wrong with good old Winchester
Thanks for making the two Winchester Ranger T videos
Once again we see the .40 outperform the 9mm. 9mm keyboard commandos crying all over the world. But seriously, I only shoot .40 and 9mm. I enjoy them equally, just like to watch videos that make 9mm fanboys cry.
people that have no clue on ballistic, they always say 9mm preformed almost the same as 40sw and power, but the fact is 40sw and 45acp is closer in performances then 40sw to 9mm, 40 to 9 is a bigger gap
*HKP:* I love it when 9mm fanboys cry because my round is biggerer and betterer.
*Paul:* my concealed carry is 22 acp.
.22 acp?
LOL. Perhaps it is... Paul doesn't even need the full .25 to be effective.
hkp 30ls 40 & 9mm are all I pretty much carry and shoot anymore.
Paul, you are the best on TH-cam. In a sea of video gunnies taking one shot at gel, you do it RIGHT!
This has been my carry round for 2 years in my g23 gen 3. I pay $52 for 50 rds at my local shop but that box last me 18 months so I don't care. These are Devastating in 230g 45 also.
I agree with the Ranger T T series 230gr +P JHP, .45acp. For the .40S&W, I use Hornady Critical Duty or the newer Federal HST punch 165gr.
Love your channel Paul. Keep up the good work my man!
But but but... the internet says that the FBI says that 9mm and .40S&W are exactly the same!?
Hateful Hermit no one has ever said that
The SAAMI specifications are the same, that's all.
Hello Paul - love your videos - how about a meat target comparing .223 FMJ to .223 JSP
Just filmed a video w/various types of .223 JSP's It should be on line in a couple of weeks.
Thanks Paul I'm sure that's going to be very interesting.
you should also do varmint rounds like hornady v max
Awesome!
Great videos! Thanks Paul
Can't wait to see those Barrier videos
Thanks for another good video. I like seeing real tests of these bullets. The moral of the story still seems to be that Winchester "white box" is a good choice most of the time. I've bought some Federal "white box" for my 9mm. I need to try this someday.
Yeah these in 40sw are top
Notch! Other calibers not so much but the 40 with these is serious stuff! I’ve tested them with my own meat target and clothing and was impressed! These rangers in 40 are right up there with Federal HST
