Wow, this is great. I’m a trim carpenter/ cabinet maker. I made a few different center consoles for my second gen due to it being a stick making that seat useless. Also I’m Self-Employed, so keeping track of papers and storage is paramount. One day, I looked at the crumbling dash and thought” could I, build it with wood, and it be kool?” I sketch some ideas I wasn’t happy with and just let it go. After seeing you make your vision, that answer is yessssssss. I outfitted my trailer that is a portable workshop, all my deigns, which is super fun to constantly revise but what I didn’t realize is when I go look at jobs, the customers can walk in and literally see and touch what I can do for them. I’m thinking, add my own dashboard and center console to that equation. Subscribed.
Do it man!!! I’ve seen a few guys on Facebook make some really great center console set ups… I wish I was half as good and doing wood work… I m not patient enough… oh well! But my vote is to do it!

I like the leather material as it all ties together so well along with the expanded metal for the vents . Killer work as always . Cheers
I didnt know if id like it but I think it does really pull together the "look" of the thing
I've had this idea in my head for a long time. Cool to see someone going after it and making it happen. I don't metal working tools yet, but I'm getting there slowly.
yeah i mean its kinda a prototype in action kinda build... If I ever redo I'd change a few small things, I still think its much better than the original, I hate plastic man
@@Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT Agreed. My Dash in my 2nd gen is completely trashed. I though about using sheet metal and doing something similar to what your doing. Just a trial and error kinda thing.

Terrific effort. I have recently seen an aluminum one that is too pricey. Might consider doing my own creation, now the ice is broken. I like the idea of ripping everything off that steel frame. 👍
Nice!! Kind of has a Mad Max look to it with the metal exposed. I think I would just keep it that way.

I Love This project a lot. And Some days I just be standing outside looking at my truck saying if I had the tools to change this I would. I'm just feeling down from all of the shops I took my vehicle to get it fix and lost thousands of dollars out here in Atlanta Ga and it's still not so good. I think these people out here needs to be really Reported. But out of all I have been working on My own truck and cars around the house by myself and I have been doing a great job on it. So Thanks for them idea
You can do it yourself man! I was in columbus GA for the last 2 years, went to ATL a ton, never would trust a shop there though.... doing it yourself is ultra worth it, not just for the money, but the better you get at it over time. plus these trucks are dumb easy to work on

i really like seeing how some people really love there trucks and hot rods you guys are the ones that gives me great ideas for my truck and on how i can fix my 1994 dodge ram 1500 single cab 4x4 dash and i have been doing alot of reach on this....so i really want to say to all of the guys out there that you all have great ideas about trying to make it look so easy went doing this but its really not that easy to do cause i am going to do something like this i have trying anything from firerglass two thinking about what this guy as done to his truck so thanks for show me it is very possible....thanks

@@MechInvent I think 14 whatever I lhad At the time, and your man if you spend some more time making a better design and cleaning up some of the corners and cutting it clearly they would actually would not that bad
Basically this whole build was just with an angle grinder in a welder you know, for me it’s just a farm truck so I don’t care too much about the way it looks on the inside but if you wanted to make it look bad ass you could spend probably a few extra hours planning it out and it would look really good
@@Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT I'll put in a bit more effort, but honestly besides the universal vent caps, it won't be far off. Here in the desert I need that AC directly on my face haha. I will most likely put an outfolding rifle mount underneath too 🤘🏼. Your getting me all excited, my truck doesn't even move yet haha. (Just rebuild nv5600 yesterday)
My dash is coming together so we'll because of you. You were the inspiration that pushed me over the edge to take the risk. In just three short weeks of work, I will have a badass dash... I'll try to make a video and upload it for you when I'm all set.
Hahahahahaha sweet!!! My dash is toast on my 01, but the lower part is still in good shape. I have thought about doing something like this.
I thought about keeping the lower part but after litearlly ripping the plastic off I wanted nothing more to do with it... I will likely build a metal lower section eventually, but its got some small AC problems I want to take care of first... that's the plan for now
plus all the dashes suck.... so hard to maintain, even with replacments

Into the old 2nd gen I heard you mention that you could weld so I figured fabricating a modified dash frame wouldn't be a problem and no one else has filmed it on TH-cam.
Yeah honestly it would look a ton better ! But this was basically free sooo… the old 2 gen is basically nothing more than a tow vehicle / farm truck now so I’m not gonna complain… but thanks for watching it really was quite simple
If someone took a little more care you could make a metal one look pretty good. This was pretty rough lol

Been doing this in whatever spare time that I may have and I've been a little bit afraid to attempt swapping out the carpet and the headliner the door panels were off when I bought the truck. Your video is an inspiration to guys like me who just want a nice truck and by no means am I a mechanic I'm figuring this out as I go.

1:13 is that box part of the security system? I know on the newer models (98-01 interior style) they were in the roof console
its either security or an ECU... I truthfully just left it plugged in and didn't touch it, just one of those things I didn't worry about
@@Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT probably be best to just leave it alone lol. Set the security system off for no reason lol. I was thinking of trading my dad out of that one 2000 dodge dually on my channel. figured Id use it as a restoration project for my channel.

Did the metal dash make any vibrations while driving it? And did it get hot while sitting in the sun?
no vibrations, even with the 12 valve, sun did not get hot with the leather top over it. I did have working AC though so if you dont, maybe.... who knows hah

What was that board material you used for the top of the dash? I'm making a custom metal dash for my 2nd gen Ram. Was considering using foam board then wrapping with a vinyl or polyurethane leather....but i think foamboard is too weak and brittle to use as a dashboard top. What is your suggestion on that based on your experience?
I used asphalt board from Home Depot… normally used on housing lol
Been a few years and still held up great that’s what I would do!
It’s stronger than normal foam - and I wrapped it in fake leather as well

No way! You did the same thing I tried to... except you actually know how to weld!
(I just bolted a bunch of slotted angle in where the peanut-brittle craptastic plastic used to be)

ive seen some VERY pretty wood dashes for these on the facebook fan page... some people get way more creative than me!
I’m 73 trying to replace the the dash in a2001 dodge. Do you think that engineer that designed it was on an acid trip, or mushrooms? All the instructions I’ve been able to find say crap about removing the airbag, but don’t tell you there are two bolts on the underneath; that you have to stand on your head to get out, and then unplug something you can’t see. If he were here with me one of us would get an ass kicking.
We totally understand that, common trend with a lot of newer cars. seems like the engineers did not take in to account the people that will work on these cars in the future. Good luck!

You would have to be in the northern virginia area and it would be based off of the time it takes to recreate and the condition of your current dash

We are in Virginia and North Carolina, but dont have the plans to do another dash board.
You should bed line the dash and the in side of the truck
now thats not a bad idea...thats how my second gen crawler looks.... I opted for a more refined interior on this one, it has a full plush carpet and heated seats :)

Spray it with some colored plastidip or bedliner.
I like the metal! If anything I would do boiled seed oil for the finish.... but its been about a year and still havent touched it past welding it... lol
Make kits to sell. You'll get rich so you can buy more 2nd gens!
Maybe in the future, hopefully when we have a larger shop space we can mass produce some cool things!

but yes! If I had to do it again, there would be ALOT of changes made and a lot of different routes I'd take... but at least its still holding up, that truck is just a farm truck now so it doesnt bother me at all! Thank you for the helpful comment! Appreciate your candor!
