As somebody from New England, I'm looking at that truck thinking that thing is mint!
Yeah the paint a little rough, but it still has all its sheet metal and there are no holes in the frame. Most of these trucks left of my neck of the woods are beyond repair.
I'd throw a dash cap on it, bedline the body, and throw maybe a 2-inch lift (if necessary) and some 35s on it and call it a day.

I love this generation Ram. This one's pretty rough, but as long as it's not rusty. These were the last half tons with a solid axle front, that's a big plus.
I'm just amazed that this truck still has rockers, cab corners, and bed sides. The few of these left running around New England don't have any of those pieces left, LOL.
This would be a great candidate to do a DIY bed liner paint job.

Buttons and dials and so much analog interface. It's wonderful as you can adjust temp, lights, and other stuff by feel instead of having to take your eyes off the road to look at a screen. Honestly we should go back to that. Aside from the 90s era paint job that fails because OEMs were getting used to low VOC paints, it looks great. $5,000 truck with a 360 V8 and 4 wheel drive and no rust? Take that deal any day. Needs about $1,000-$1,500 for some minor fixes and it'll be a great backcountry adventure mobile!

Nathan, the manual transmission was not available with the 5.9 on the 1500 series trucks (i.e. Package 23A, 23G), which would explain why you only saw it on the 5.2 equipped trucks.
Also, my dad ordered a 2001 SLT with the Off Road Group back in February 2001. As a 20 year old kid, it was the most badass truck I had ever seen at that time and I loved finding excuses to drive it. Sadly, he traded it on new Ram in 2006. The $1,745 option (per the window sticker that he kept) got you 275/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler GSA tires, 136 amp alternator, HD engine cooling, auxilary transmission cooler, transfer case and fuel tank skid plates, anti-spin differential, tow hooks, fog lamps, 4.10 gears, ~2" lift, and a trussed Dana 44 front axle. As much as I love my 2019 Rebel and it will probably outperform the 2001 in every way, I will always say his 2001 was my favorite truck.

@@wildbill23c yeah, I’ve got the Dakota with a 3.9L magnum. Engine isn’t particularly powerful, but it sounds great and is easy and fun to tinker with. Only trans issue I’ve run across is the overdrive solenoid making it’s way out after 17 years and 215k miles of use. Still works great though, even lugging a 4500lb body around and sometimes a trailer, it’s just slow and clunky shifting from 3 to 4. I average around 19mpg with 50/50 city/highway mileage, but I’m probably going to swap the drivetrain at some point, either 5.9 and built 4 speed auto, or 3rd Gen hemi with the 8 speed auto, just depends on how the economy goes. 5.9/360 Magnum was not available with a 5spd in a 1500.
Also, looks like it's missing the factory tow hooks that came standard on Offroad Editions, I know a guy with some if that's one of three things you're looking to upgrade.
Sport front ends demand a fairly high price, a good condition bumper/grille often goes for $600-$1000

Those off road edition rams are great trucks. I use have one. I kick myself in the butt for getting rid of it. That truck never let me down. Mods I did to the one I had were 4.56 gears 35 inch tires amd a mild cam. Was a blast to drive.

My brother has this same exact truck with the same paint fade too. Over 230,000 miles on it. We do work, hauling, hunt and still 4wheel it in Colorado in southwest lots of trails and mountains to explore. But it regularly maintained and still use stock parts.

I have a 98 ram 1500 with the 5.2 magnum. Its been a good truck. Finally got around to fixing the minor body damage and painting it back in May of 2020. Replaced the factory steel 16" steel wheels with a set of 17" chrome and got a really good deal on a set of big ol Michelle's, kinda rough riding now as the tires are 10ply rated, lol.......rated to carry almost 3200 lbs each, bet I never overload it. Building a RV tow rig. Its coming along nicely......

This should be a good series. These don't need to be full-on projects, but hopefully the do mini mods--maybe a $1k budget each (or a $6,000ish total budget). For this one, a new dash, used tailgate, and a home respray.

I had a 2000 sport off road with the 5.2 I think it was. The smaller V8. Loved it. I was dumb and traded it. I wish I had it back. I had installed a high flow cat and a single flowmaster super 44 out the side in front of the rear tire. Super loud.

I did exactly what you're doing here with a 2002 Sierra SLT Z71 Extended cab. Bought it with 169,000 miles in 2017 and it already had a Fabtech 6" lift, a SnugTop shell and 35'5 on it for roughly $5k. I put a couple grand into replacing wear items, a couple grand into the motor, new Bilstein shocks, re-geared it to 4.56, added fender flares and put wider tires on it with an E-Locker out back....it's been a daily ever since and it's bomb proof off-road. So much better than the new trucks and it hauls butt while getting 15mpg average.

  • @LukeEdward
    @LukeEdward 3 ปีที่แล้ว

PLEASE check the intake gasket. The Magnum series 318/360 engines are notorious for those going bad. A very easy way to check it, if the PCV system is OK, is to get it nice and warm, and with it idling, open the oil fill cap and put your hand over the oil fill. If there is vacuum, the barrel gasket on the bottom of the intake manifold has failed. I have had many of these in Dodge/Jeep products and it’s always overlooked.
ALSO, front unit bearing assembly. If it has not been replaced, buy three, replace both, and keep the extra for a spare when one fails again.
