  • The results are in! The 2021 ISUZU D-MAX survived the 2600km Towing Test! (p.s It did great). The 2021 ISUZU D-MAX has a towing capacity of 3500kg and a towball weight of 350kg max. After towing 2.8T 2600kms with the new 2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain in this video I give my thoughts on suspension, fuel economy, IDAS, DPD burns, temps and a bunch of other factors I experienced. Heavy towed in your 2021 ISUZU D-MAX? Let me know you thoughts in the comments :)

    😀 About VideoShowMeHow
    -----------------------------------------------
    ⏩ Where did this start?
I really enjoy tinkering with different projects - they usually require a whole bunch of research and learning along the way. It's satisfying on doing a thing and standing back and going 'Yeah! Totally did that!'. I had a bunch of mates asking 'how did you know how to do that?' and 'I couldn't never do that myself so I thought; I need to start something where I can help others that might be thinking the same thing :)
⏩ What will you find here?
The purpose is simply to make these videos as top quality and helpful as I can. They will always be free, there's ZERO agenda and the only motive is to try and upload what I would want to watch to help with that particular project. I'm also keen to keep building this little community and will try to answer all questions when asked - fire away :)
    ⏩ What's with the gloves?
Not after any TH-cam fame here which is why I'm not in the vids - they're not about me they're about the how-to! I used the gloves for the first couple of projects I filmed which just happened to be messy ones and it kinda just became a thing. Plus adds a little more personality I guess :)
New videos are being uploaded regularly so if there's something you'd like to see, have Questions and/or Comments drop me a line.
    Cheers guys.

spot on info. i can confirm this great video and tow the same van weight. We cruise on 100 speedo. Handling is great that gives confidence and that coming from the same van on a Toyota tundra 57l Petrol v8. As for IDAS I had the update to the system to give one touch disengaging the functions outlined for towing in this video. You hold the steering wheel icon button for 5 seconds and can be done on the fly, outstanding.

Re the mirrors, I understood the law clearly stated that you must be able to see the back corners of the van- you need the clear view mirror option, or the Milenko clip on model! 100% agree re the brake controller location! I had an argument with dealer after I did a towing course…… he refused to relocate to the centre. Most important that your passenger can reach the emergency brake while you are wrestling the wheel with 2 hands to control your swinging van . Thanks for the review

Great vid as always. Nice to hear what other people experience whilst towing with the D-Max. My van is a little heavier than yours, still pulls up hills at no less than 80km/h. Fuel economy gets up around 17-18l per 100km towing from Vic to Newcastle in pretty windy weather. As for towing mirrors I found the clip on ones would cause the mirrors to fold against the window over 80km with a little wind or a truck oncoming. Waste of money I think, I’m hoping to get the MSA mirrors when they arrive. Apparently meant to be under $900 so much better than the clearviews. Only thing I found was over 80-90km/h in wind it felt uneasy but with no wind was great at 100km/h.

Great work mate!!! I'd really be interested in the Transmission temps, see if a trans cooler is necessary. It does not seem to be though. Proper extendable mirrors are so much better for towing, seeing the back of the van is a huge plus, it does take some stress out of reversing the van :). Nice to know about the standard suspension. I was planning on staying stock and getting airbags, but I did not want to get airbags then have to upgrade suspension. Always nice to confirm everything will work nicely with the plan that is in the head haha. I nearly talked myself out of the rear bar due to the radar and warranty (did not want to have issues and not covered) but seems worth it. Keep up the good work mate.

I owned a 2011 and my father has a 2014, both 5 speed manuals and pre DPD. I towed a few times interstate with a farm equipment trailer and car on back that was around 2.8ton and averaged 10.8ltrs, unloaded would get 7.2ltrs a hundred. Father has a 1.7ton caravan and averages up and down the New England 9.0ltrs a hundred, his being a low ride 2x4 helps with fuel. Mine was 4x4 with bull bar and only open tub but had modified the dump pipe and added a snorkel and K&N filter.

If you want to quickly turn off all the IDAS programming just slide a business card in front of one of the windscreen cameras.
You'll get a warning to clean the windscreen but it disappears in a couple of seconds (or push the confirm button on your steering wheel) The warning isn't brightly lit and doesn't make any sound.
Simply slide the card out and the system starts again.
I bend a small tab over at one end of the card to make it easy to remove.
The card fits perfectly and you can't see it when you're driving!
Isuzu have been made amply aware of this laborious issue so let's hope they address it at some stage.

Do yourself a favour and research towing heavy. 1:1 ratio in your box will be better and much stronger for transmission versus the overdrives 5 and 6. Torque is far better at the 1:1 and reduces in 5 and 6. This goes for autos and manual gear boxes. Yes you can use the two overdrives but in the long term usage you will see that 1:1 gear ration will be better for longevity of transmission and keep auto temps down even further than you have already found. Ask a company like Wholesale Automatics in Melbourne about their views on towing heavy and Berima Diesel have a youtube explaining power and torque figures differences between 4th gear and the two overdrive gears, especially the torque comparison, you will be amazed. I will not go with Isuzu's recommendation of seclecting D and then leat transmission decide for heavy towing in an auto. I have a manual and would not tow heavy in the two overdrive gears. 360 Gearboxes and Diffs Melbourne youtube showed me the damage in manual gear boxes towing heavy using the two overdrive gears and demonstrated how better off you are in 4th gear being 1:1. I have a 6 speed manual MY18 Isuzu spacecab chassis with canopy myself .

The RA and all models have two pic ups for speed and distance. The abs sensors pic up wheel speed for your speedometer and abs where as the speed sensor on the gear box is for the ecu, so fuel economy, engine mapping and the auto transmissions gear box to wheel speed difference for shifting. So unfortunately the extra big tyres aren't being accounted for with the ECU.

In a sway situation would you want to take your hand off the wheel and fumble around the dash for a button. Obviously the engineer has no idea about towing a van. I am having the dealer install the controller and have spoken to the installer and he has agreed to put it on the console. Thanks for your comment about the correct location. I have sent your vid to the dealer to show the installer. Bit of a pain having to remember to turn off the safety stuff every time you head off with the van, Should be a software fix to solve that I would have thought. All people who tow should send that part of your vid to their dealer and Isuzu Head Office. No chance towing my camper on the soft stuff in 4H. Pleased to report the DMAX is a totally different story, I really pushed it up some bigger hills particularly through the range when doing this vid and it was flawless, much better cooling and different auto cooling from factory than the Jeep. Seems to me the engine is really designed for this car, where as with the Jeep CRD it was a VM motor shoehorned into the JK body (eg checkout the position of the cat for example, waay up in the engine bay) . Any sorry for the long reply, but have been in your exact position! Enjoy mate :)

Surprised you towed a heavy van in drive, my 2023 prefers manual and 4th which is 1 to 1 with our 2700kg van. Temps were good no need for a trans cooler so i wont buy one.

Yep, that's what the manual recommends 🤔
