    You're missing a key point in the Wendigo legends, Ox. According to the folklore, a person who gives in to their primal avarice or resorts to cannibalism, even as a desperate act to survive, can become POSSESSED by the evil spirit of the Wendigo, which will twist and transform the victim into the monstrous creature we see today.

    I feel that Ox left out one of the most important parts of the Wendigo myth, that the game actually kind of does a good job hinting at. The Wendigo was also used as a scapegoat, as much as a scary story. In the dead of Winter, when there was no food at all and people were unable to leave their shelters to hunt or forage due to all the snow, and you had to do what you had to do to survive, you could blame the Wendigo. "It wasn't your fault, you were overtaken by the Wendigo." "You didn't want to eat those people to survive, the Wendigo made you do it." "You're not a monster, the Wendigo is the monster." To absolve themselves of blame for what they did, people forced to resort to cannibalism to survive in Winter would claim to have been possessed by the spirit of the Wendigo. You can kind of see that in Morris' story, and a lot more in Scoot's story.

    My ex was native and he 100% believed that this thing was real, it absolutely terrified him and he went into that cave, he just put the controller down and walked away and started praying because in his culture just saying the name invites the spirit to come possess you, and you'll start getting the hunger and the minute you actually do it you will be possessed and you will start turning into one

    It is possible that something similar to feral ghouls happened to them. Radiation could have affected their brain, but maybe a certain part got affected more. The hypothalamus controls how hungry and full you feel. If it got damaged, then it is a possibility you would begin to feel like you're constantly starving. Which, could eventually lead to you reverting to cannibalism.

    • @fourscarlet7581
      @fourscarlet7581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think existing cannibles became wendigos in a similar way to ghouls, but a cannibalism related disease mutated inside of them, causing them to become Wendigos.

    • @LordDarthHarry
      @LordDarthHarry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@fourscarlet7581 They definitely seem to be a type of Ghoul. Ferals don't attack them and vice versa. Also the creature profiles in the Enclave genetics lab has the Wendigo in the same group as Ghoul variants.

    • @buuam7555
      @buuam7555 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they were eating human brain tissue then they probably contracted "Kuru" which is a Prion diseases that has no cure.
      so if they had Kuru and were subjected to long term radiation exposure then it would make sense for them to be a subspecies of Ghoul.
      TL,DR if you have to eat a person discard the brain, actually its probably best to discard ALL internal organs and bleed the meat property to avoid prion contamination.

    • @MuffinOfChaos
      @MuffinOfChaos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@blueoysterboi4742 it's not actually too far from reality. A lot of parasites do utilise horizontal gene transfer (passing a set of genes to another organism either for symbiosis or to assist feeding) - like the parasite wasp - so maybe the radiation and FEV just takes the idea to the extreme.

      I wonder if the wendigo counts as a cryptid or a proper mythological creature, like the difference between the Goatman and your garden variety satyr? Because the wendigo myth is a hell of a lot older than, say, Mothman or the Roswell aliens.

    • @alisonhenry7330
      @alisonhenry7330 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@etcetera1995 I wonder if the definition is based on timeframe of sightings. Or if it's based on assertion. I mean, did the ancient greeks actually believe in satyrs, or was it understood that it was allegory etc. Things like the mothman are borne of out of the blue sightings, usually. Fairly modern ones. I used to give a lot more creedence to cryptids until I finished my degree. I couldn't find anything in most of the modern myths that couldn't be explained by greed, lies and mental illness. I do wish I couldn't explain them, though. Or could find them. What a wonderful world it'd be if we had more mysteries... or unicorns :P

    A couple of minor, minor points:
    1) The Pre-War Fallout universe sci-fi/horror media made a lot of correct guesses. (EG: The "Fishmen" film series comes to mind.)
    2) Progenitor doesn't necessarily mean the very 1st example of a thing. It also signifies something that came before and, possibly, led to something new. I do agree that the devs want us to feel that this guy was the 1st of his kind, but not necessarily of Wendigoes in general.
    Personally, I see these wendigoes as a variant of ghouls. They happen to resemble folk lore, so there ye go.
    I still think it's all a sim, anyways. That's the real experiment of Vault 76.

      I like to think that pre-war media was a way of covering up the truth. Like the "Hot Sheets" from Men In Black. No one believes Super Market Tabloids, but in Men In Black they are all 100% true. The truth is out there for anyone to read about, but it's presented in such a way that no one would actually believe it. So no one would believe Zetans for example are real because they're just aliens from some kid's comic book, but we all know they are very real.

      The Great War changed the world, not because of the impacts of the bombs, but because of what civilization has become after that. In the first hours, the first thing that was present was fear and despair. After the inicial hours of confusion, the first thing that people must have thought was to stay close to their relatives; families that lived together stayed united, relatives that lived far begun planning to travel to where their other relatives lived, some others decided to unite with friends, neighbors and coworkers. Either way, most people decided to unite in groups, very few people decided to wander alone for their own reasons.
      In the first week, a small tension must have paired in the air, as people didn't knew what was going to happen. Most groups started stocking food and water and there probably had a few stores and emergencial checkpoints working to deliver basic need supplies. Some people were probably waiting for a proper response of the goverment about what was suposed to be done. Others were already sure that society as they knew was over. As the black rain poured over the land, carrying radioactive materials on it, lots of people must have start dying due to the prolonged exposure to radiation.
      In the second week, as the supply routes started to crumble and supplies started becoming scarse, that small tension from the first week became suspicion. Those ones who still had hope, hoped they would still manage to get their share of supplies and those wich already lost hope, were sure to get they would get theirs supplies, one way or another... And this is probably when people started arming themselves and moving to more fortified positions. Some groups of people with little supplies started to starve, and this is when they decided to take supplies from other groups, giving birth to the first Raiders gangs. Desperate people that would do anything to survive. Groups in large cities probably were the first to become Raiders, and to perish in conflict with Raiders. Small towns probably united in much stronger groups, having a bigger sense of comunity and uniting entire families to protect their own from outsiders, being able to withstand more against those inicial Raiders.
      In the third week those who have not died yet from radiation exposure started showing signs of radiation sickness, losing hair, teeth, flesh. The most exposed ones started to appear like the first Ghouls, however still sentient. Groups in large cities start uniting into bigger gangs, and assaulting military supply spots, wich triggered the last remaining military authorities to deploy their Power Armor cavalry inland to contain the population. Many soldiers deserted their posts, to try to find their families. Entire batallions go rogue, securing strategic places like hospitals to treat their wounded, supply depots and guns stores, for equipment. They become the first paramilitary forces working by their own standards in the Wasteland. Some even becoming like Raiders. Others offering their power as mercenaries.
      After the first month, there is no sign of government personel anywhere. There is no more response from authorities, each group is out there by their own. Those who still hoped for some response, now know it will never come. As supplies are now mostly non existent, many groups start to wander the Wasteland in search for a place with food and fresh water. Many groups die in their pilgrimage, others become Raiders. Plants start to lose their colors to become more beige. Most animals are now extinct or very rare to find. But there are still places where the grass is still green, the trees still have leaves, mostly untouched by the taint of radiation, but not for long...
      2 months after the bombs fell, the sky is mostly dark. Dark clouds are carryied from place to place by massive windstorms. It's almost impossible to see the sun, the temperature have dropped quite a bit, making groups try to find shelter. Loud odd noises are heard in the wind, making people be afraid to leave their safeplaces. those who dare to venture outside their shelters, describe a massive storm with green glowing lightnings and constant tornados. Almost every day rains, but at least it's not the black rain anymore. When people can see the sun people feel blessed.
      4 months after the war and you can witness the first Feral Ghouls roaming the Wasteland. Those who were exposed to the green storm became heavily irradiated, and those who were already suffering from radiation sickness became Feral Ghouls a few weeks after their exposure to the rain. Entire settlements become ferals in months. People started fearing large cities and prefering instead to roam remote places. Farm animals started to mutate, mostly diyng due to genetic malformation. Crops started to rot still planted. The earth was heavily polluted with toxic materials. Money now had no value, food and water being the most desired commodity to trade.
      A year and a half after the bombs fell and people mostly live in their own comunities, with ocasional raiders passing by. The places that mostly withstand the Wasteland where the most fortified and where crops still grow. Groups that have the last remaning cows, chickens and crops were the most successful in surviving the Wasteland, having mercenaries in their hands working for food, water and power. These are the most influential and still active communities in the Wasteland, still trading between each other a few times a year, and surely attracting the atention of large Raider groups. Smaller groups are mostly wanderers, others pledging loyalty to larger groups.
      5 years after the war and the dark clouds are almost gone, but the sky is still grey, with few days of sunlight. Large raider gangs have already taken a commercial choice between selling slaves, producing bullets and guns in old factories using slave labor or raiding towns with large raiding parties to capture slaves. But as so few groups of humans still stand in the wasteland, mostly are already well know in their vicinity. Rumors of deadly creatures that roam the land are already present in the folklore, with some even saying they have seen green tall men, very muscular walking and shouting through the Wasteland. Some say that they eat men flesh and are very hostile. Others claim that they take people with them, and these people are never seen again. The last remaining farm animals mostly have mutations on their bodies, some even have extra limbs and almost no fur or feathers. Some people say that one of these large settlements managed to mantain cows alive, however it's said that all of their cows have two heads! It's said that they managed to survive because they were from a very resistent breed of cows, it's name start with B, but I can't remember now... Weirder even is that now some people are claiming that they have been seeing bigger insects out there and that these insects sometimes atack people on sight! Imagine an ant the size of a hand, that would be a crazy thing to see! But other travelers claim to have seen even larger insects!
      Observation: most of this I have imagined myself, from fallout lore and from other post apocalyptic games and movies, however if you found it entertaining, feel free to leave a like.

      "European", "Canadian" all end with that "ee-un" sound, and that sound usually indicates "belonging to"
      So saying "Algonkwee-un", while not actually correct, is just following that logic and saying "Belonging to the Algonquin people."

From where I'm from (Ontario Canada) the Wendigo is described more like a half man half elk. Instead of the gangly crawling humanoid creature. Still both super scary and cool to see fallout include some aboriginal folk lore!

    One thing that I think is hinted at with the Morris holotape is that there may be an element of a prion disorder, something akin to Creutzfledt-Jacob. It's a disorder that can be acquired through cannibalism (specifically consumption of brain matter) and has among its symptoms changes in behavior (Morris "eyeing" of other people early on seems to fit this) and fits of uncontrolled behavior.
    I think that the transformation of Morris into the progenetor wendigo may be a toxic cocktail of a prion disorder, radiation, and one of the more specific strains of FEV found in Hunterville that created a transformation akin to Harold. That is likely why wendigo haven't shown up in other locations within the Wasteland even when there has been rampant cannibalism long after Morris and the other former Gourmand.

    My favorite part of this video is in the first few moments when Ox is describing the historical description of the Wendigo in our world, all while frantically taking pictures of the beast as it runs up to him.

    Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Oxhorn suffers through Fallout 76 to bring us these lore videos?

    One thing I don't wanna encounter are these Wendigos. I heard they are hard to outrun and mostly chances you may not survive if they are targeting you and using the voices that people you care of. Also hard to kill if you have something to burn there flesh or someone told me you have to rip there heart out to kill them but how since they have really tough skin unless you have a sharp object to cut them through.

    As someone that actually lives in one of the old farmhouses built by the early German immigrants, I can also tell you with certainty that the warding effect of the barn star is secondary. It’s actually meant to represent the star of Bethlehem. Don’t know why they chopped off one of the points though.

    I love these videos. Ox always finds places that I would never find myself. On the raider front , I figured gangs started popping up days or hours after the bombs fell but it would take a while before they would start raiding. Some would have started raiding before the fallout. There have always been an criminal element in sociaty. Drug cartels and mob bosses and the like. So , in a way , there has always been raider gangs in Fallout.

    The Gourmands remind me of the Tennessee/Georgia cannibals in "Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse" by Victor Gischler. Now I want to reread that.

    Oh I get it. Because if you eat human flesh, you become the wendingo's servant. I think that's what the short story the Mordeo was based on

    We made a 1/2 ton steel barn star for my aunts farm. It was too heavy for the barn itself so we as well attached a steel pole to the bottom and cemented in the ground as well as bolted on the top of the barn. It was a fun 4 days

    I can't believe you still make videos. Don't get me wrong - I just found your channel last year when I first started playing Fallout: New Vegas and wanted to look up a video about a vault that was confusing me. That's when I found your entire lore series and your complete walk-throughs of the vaults. Several months passed and I decided to find your channel again and watch some more New Vegas vault videos and, so, I did last night and remembered to click the bell icon. And holy shit - You still upload! The last video I watched from you was uploaded in 2017. Nice. Anyway, keep up the good work.
