There were two different stars: The 5-pointed barn star, and the seven-pointed star. Both came from German-American immigrants, both were placed on barns, and both warded off evil spirits, but it looks like only the seven-pointed star was specifically used to ward off the snallygaster. So Beverly Soloman was right in her holotape. They do have seven-pointed stars in Fallout 76. They are more colorful and almost look like quilt patterns.

K K I'm feeling the fev is indeed that genetic whatzit that in our world has long disappeared along with the mythics they were part of. In the fallout universe it was somehow discovered and considered a virus because of its transformative property. Orcs, snallygaster, molemen, wendigo(not sure I spelled that correctly). So yeah I totally agree!

I think the most likely answer is that the original sightings were mistaken identities/hoaxes, and that the creatures created were based on the radio plays, when making a new species you would need some kind of idea of what you want to create and whoever decision it was was a fan of said plays.
Since there were plans for human interactions they most likely based it off those plays so that they could pass any real sighting off as people with over active imaginations.

Interesting lore as always, my only comment is 500 lbs. of Dynamite!? For one still, even at the size of 2500 gal. is where the story pegs the meter. Minimum safe outside distance for that large of a detonation is 1500ft. and since most stills were the woods, that's a lot of shrapnel in the air, along with the possible ignition (depending on the actual Proof of the moonshine).
Plus, that's about 25 cases of dynamite for two Revenue Agents to be transporting and carrying though the woods.
Not blaming you OX, just whoever originally told this whooper! Then again, never let the facts get in the way of a good story! LOL, look forward to the next installment of lore, thanks OX!

I love the “Tales from the West Virginia Hills” series. I think it was a great way of both fleshing out the world and adding on to the 50s aesthetic. I think it acts much like the silver shroud radio plays from FO4. I also love the fact that you chose to also go in depth on the real-world origins of these fantastical beasts. I find the real world stories more fascinating at time. Just the fact that a combination of mystery, curiosity, and herd mentality can cause millions of people to fully believe a beast straight from a fairy tale exists in our own world is really interesting to hear about. Maybe the sightings of the snallygaster and grafton monsters were earlier test subjects from West-Tec that they let lose in order to see how they would survive outside a controlled environment, but they failed and their data was archived and wiped from the terminals, then WT would try again with the same strain of FEV, just modified a bit to root out what made earlier subjects fail. Then rinse and repeat.

Just a note, 500lbs pounds of TNT would absolutely DESTORY everything around the Shine Still, and wtvr neighbors in the surrounding hillside. Not to mention, the incredibly difficult task of sneaking in that much weight of unstable explosives, unseen in the middle of the night?! It's so casualy mentioned, one can easily forget the total, raw, and destructive TNT was/is, especially in a world where Nukes are passed around like candy.
