Theory: The real Grafton monster was just a myth in the fallout universe, the engineers at west-tek nicknamed the fev subjects after the grafton monster because it looked similar to the mythical one and the name stuck.

Only not nearly as big of a threat. Grafton Monsters have trouble fighting back and they're not much tougher than Snallyghasters. None of the cryptids are that big of a threat compared to things like Gulpers, Anglers, Fogcrawlers, Hermit Crabs, Mirelurk Queens, DeathClaws, and other carried over Fallout 4 nasties. Which all pale in comparison to Scorchbeasts.

In the holotape when the woman turns into a monster reminded me of the Mothership zeta log in fallout 3 when we hear a guy turn into one of those abominations.
Yeah, the sounds of a person being forcibly transformed into something inhuman is horrifying. Hearing it happen to a guy is disturbing, but the "nope" factor gets turned up to 11 if it's a girl (at least for me). Bonus "nope" points if you can hear the sounds of bone, muscle, and flesh rapidly reorienting as they transform.

In Poland yhere is a mythical creature called Południca it is a decomposing woman with no front throat and it has its tongue flaing from its mouth. And it is dressed in a wedding dress along with a dandialion head braclet. It appears in felds at dusk or before a storm

So that's where they got the idea for a Noonwraith in Witcher 3.
Theory: the Grafton monster already existed and West Tech engineered FEV to replicate the monster. In the radio broadcast, the doctor seemed to be aware that the monsters had no heads, as if that were to be expected. But then in the logs from the facility, it states “lack of a discernible head”, indicating that that was a surprise. So again just a theory.

I first encountered The Grafton Monster while on a daily trade route that I had to alter, so I had to cut through Grafton to stay on route.
As I entered the town, The Grafton Day event started, and I was just like: "Okay, some prewar robot's probably just on the fritz." so I continued through Grafton, stealthing my way by Muties and Scorched when I heard this eerie roar.
I said to myself: "Meh, probably just a behemoth, what with the Super Mutant infestation and all." So I kept on trucking, when I finally laid eyes upon it.
It scared the living crap out of me and I could only spout two words from my mouth: "Oh shit".
I was thinking how did the people manage to wait a whole week for a 5 minutes sketch on the "Tales of West Virginia"... then realized that I do something similar, once a week, just to see Ox's cryptid Fallout videos.
I live in West Virginia and this is a great game
@@tracihaynes7396 uhhh I used to live in Wheaton, Md... a long, long time ago. And yes, this game might get bad reviews if you just focus on the surface. But if you dig way down, just like Ox does, you are inmersed on the remains of a chaotic world, that starts unfolding once you start get your bearings outside of the vault.
There is another one at Hemlock Holes that always spawns, as well as between the Charleston Railway and Poseidon Energy plant.
´was pvping and hunting some others players for archievment. tried in that area to get a good spot, cause someone camped at a Roof and shot players down. That bastard of a monster just blindsided me during my line up and send me flying several meters . the roof camper and i shot like crazy at it til it was down . he emotes, i emotes and i ran away then. That monster a dick.
To me this is the most gross/disturbing cryptids, I remember when I first saw it around level 10-12 near grafton, it scared the sh** out of me.

Since research takes a while to take notes and gather info, I think that the entry of the Grafton Monster in west tec is done a good deal after it was made. You said the radio play was one month before and so I believe that it is possible that during all that time the scientists were just gathering info first *before* putting it down on the terminal. And *during* that research, those kids stumbled upon it.
You sure it wasn't the Grafton mayor's idea post war? Seeing as they now had an actual Grafton monster

New theory as to why the Grafton monster may have multiple counterparts, maybe the FEV in the oil/blood is infectious and when people unknowingly drink from water mixed with this oil they become more grafton monsters.

As many have stated already, there are working vehicles in Fallout lore.
Just for some reason Bethesda decided that the only one that makes regular and active appearances are Vertibirds. Only exceptions being special scripted encounters like the Prydwyn and Boomer's Bomber.
Frankly I think they should have/of had more than just Vertibirds be the vehicle encounters. Imagine having to fight a Gunner controlled APC or Tank.

I like to think many of the "cryptids" exist and once things mutated (be it by radiation or FEV or what have you) people named it based on what it reminded them of. Particularly ravenous ghoul subspecies became wendigos, am53 like mutations became known as Grafton monsters. Seems the most likely unless they were being specifically breed though am53s data entry while confirming it was an intentional creation its exact form was accidental

My theory, is that the subject we hear about , may be the most succeful one, but other tests of that strain of FEV may have been considered failures, and their bodies dumped somewhere.
Then, "nature" have gone it's course, and someone may have been infected and turned into a "proto-Grafton Monster", starting the legends.
Other idea, and this one is one that i actually would love to see explored a little more, is that some strains of FEV mutate the body, in accord with the mind of the subject, like with Richard Grey, a extremely intelligent and mind focused man, turning into a "super living brain".
Maybe, some rare strains of FEV, mainly the ones tested at west-virginia and the first containers at mariposa, could bind or somehow use the subject mind and mutate the body in accord to it, that would explain how some cryptocreatures would be born from FEV and would open potential for new FEV creatures on the fallout world.

I think the Grafton 'Mayor' reprogrammed those eye-bots and the mild buzzing they let off may calm or at least attract the creature.

I went to west Virginia for part of my road trip last month. It's an absolutely beautiful state with so many cool little places to go. I stopped by the Greenbrier hotel, lewisburg, new river gorge bridge, and point pleasant! And of course the mothman museum, in point pleasant was 100% a requirement while i was there haha. I recommend people should go there and check it out, it's a very cool state

It's possible that a fev like substance can exist in the natural world but is very rare and people walked right on into it becoming the Grafton monster and that's how the folktales started and how the radio play is accurate

My experience with the grafting monster; watching from afar in Charleston and frantically running away, as well as killing the one in grafton only for it to despawn so I couldn't loot it.

Kind of makes you wonder.. Maybe FEV wasn't "invented", but found, in some form, then experimented on, to try to use it to produce predictable mutations, for the military.
FEV was invented, it started off as PVP (Pan-Immunity Project or something). The pre-war U.S. military then found out about the side-effects of PVP and took the project for themselves renaming it as FEV.
@@uri8388 The Pan-Virion Immunization Project. It was an attempt to find a cure or immunization for the New Plague. Then somebody in the War Department decided the results they got sounded like a way to make super-soldiers for the war against China, signed up the only people they could find who were more evil than Vault-Tec, and the rest is history.

But what would it be 🤔, maybe they took the New Plague and messed with it's internal structure or something. I mean if they were trying to find a cure, I think looking at the disease first would be helpful towards finding it.

And, given it is is the Fallout universe, there is a better than zero chance that they dug up some sort of bug/virus/microbe which seemed to have rapid mutagenic properties and adaptability, or something, and decided that engineering that into the "cure" would produce positive effects. So.. Lets say this mutagen was already around, deep in the ground, and was dredged up, now and then, in rare cases, where it combined with radiation (especially from some of these Fallout only type isotopes that other labs got all exited about), and *sometimes* you got a case of a perfect storm - a single person, animal, etc. that got infected, then irradiated, and the resulting mutation ends up producing these really rare anomalies.
Only, now you have idiots using FEV, which they don't really understand, which contains bits of this mutagen, which was stuck into the original attempt to produce a cure, and its being exposed, right and left, to **exactly** the sort of radiation that caused the mutagen to produce all these, previously super rare, creatures. They, literally, unwittingly, dumped an "improved" version of the mutagen, into environments that *caused* the original one off, or at least staggeringly rare, mutations in the first place.
Kind of like dropping a Tribble on a agro planet. lol
maybe the original Grafton monster was captured and West Tech was trying to recreate it using the FEV virus. An army of cryptids would be terrifying
You mean, West Tek had genetic samples from a "natural" monster and used that as the basis for modifying the FEV? That seems to tie up a lot of lose ends.
I recently got fallout 76, and while exploring I managed to kill 2 of those from long range below level 25. Seeing all these new mutated cryptids is super cool, especially since I know a few, being a Virginian
I think the monster existed before and Westek caught it and used its DNA to modify the FEV in an attempt to make the FEV strains they were working on more viable.
I ran into him litterly by a amusement park close to the end of the map. Unfortunately i ran into supermutants as well....he lost to 3 supermutants i let them fight and was Dissapointed by his fighting style. Hes more scary than tough...but of course like u said there alot tougher ones...this was just a regular grafton monster

My story with that beast was, I was fighting some little ticks, what I call liberators, and heard him, after I was done I looked of the building and saw him, I fought him where he couldn’t get me and killed him
Back in the 60s, in West Virginia, where it all took place, it was reported in the newspaper and it lead to a widespread hunt for the creature throughout the county of Grafton. This actually happened back then.

Oxhorn: Apologies for the off topic question but have you done a mod video for enemy factions in Fallout 4? I loved your videos on the possible factions the player could side with and was curious if you'd done anything similar for the enemy factions (Raiders, Gunners, and the like).
I encountered my first Grafton Monster just outside of Clarksburg. It caught me by surprise, but after about 10 40mm grenades...
You can find the wrecked transport near Grafton with a holotape (John Bunton's Holotape) of a man who was witnessing a nuclear blast. Afterwards, something escapes from the truck and you can hear the Grafton Monster.

Well, people and animals [even some plants] in Fallout universe already different from normal [for simplicity of understanding lets say they have the X gene] so it's possible that radiation from nuclear war activaded this gene. And at the same time, even before the war some unfortunate soul might spontaneously mutated from any number of reasons: ambient radiation, Retrovirus and so on into Grafton Monster.
Its explain why some individuals mutated into ghouls while others just die from radiation and why some members of Church of the Children of Atom are immune to the adverse effects of radiation and can live freely in high-radiation zones, its just different kinds of mutation in each case.

While researching immunity-boosting drugs West Tek's observed abnormal side effects in the test subjects, so they dissected and find the cause of the mutation one particular gene that can rewrite the host body in many number of ways. And researching this gene they came up with FEV.

I didn't know the Grafton monster was a part of the fallout 76 lore.. honestly I was binge watching mountain monsters and buck brought it up... They're literally living in Appalachia and it got me thinking if there's any decent lore oxhorn must know something...
So here I am.. whether this is actual historical lore from The real world and not the video game it's always interesting to listen to this guy.

As long as you don't live in West Virginia, you should be good. Most mysterious creatures west of that are usually considered friendly.

Yesterday I found the grafton monster while doing that side quest where you find the target cutouts for the mr handy and a flatwood alien made it turn purple
Quick Grafton Monster fighting tips:
1. Since it got no head aim for the blow holes on its back
2. It has alot of armor so it's best to use weopons that ignore armor
3. Get really damn good armor because even of its the same level as you it can do a third of your health with one swipe
