Story Summary :-
The narrator is a 44-year-old woman who has been married to her husband, Matt, for twenty-one years. During a Thanksgiving dinner hosted in the home she inherited from her grandmother, her husband’s “illegitimate son” rings the doorbell and reveals Matt’s infidelity.
The narrator kicks Matt out of the house and contacts a lawyer about divorcing him, but Matt incessantly contacts the narrator in hopes of reconciling. Matt’s mistress, Nicole, also begins contacting the narrator, but she wants to encourage the divorce so that she can have Matt for herself. Unbeknownst to the mistress, she provides the narrator with the information necessary to serve Matt with divorce papers and sue him for adultery as it is a crime in their state.
Matt is found guilty of adultery and sentenced to jail time or to pay a fine, and to pay alimony, after which he is still intent on reconciling with the narrator. The narrator leverages Matt’s desire to get back together to collect evidence that will get Nicole to stop contacting her. After a DNA test authorized by Matt, it is revealed that he is not the biological father of Nicole’s child. Matt attempts to stay in the child’s life after the reveal, but Nicole, seeing nothing left for her to gain, leaves him as well.
The narrator closes off the story by talking about how she is going to continue living her life, hopeful for what the future holds, and states that she has no interest in ever reconciling with her ex-husband.

The commenter has brain damage or is just stupid. Op did NOT refuse to have a child, it was Matt who didn't want any, so they got a dog. Then, after menopause had probably started for Op, he decides he wants to try for a child.
I think the mistress wanted Matt to be the father because of the other guys not good enough to take care of the child. So she concocked the plan to separate OP and her husband so she could have a better life than she could ever imagine.
Or she had relations with many men simultaneously so she didn't know who the father was. In any case, she was horrible for having an affair with a married man and harassing his innocent wife. She is terrible human being.
Op's husband and his mistress were both lying to one another. The husband must have told her that he owned OP's house so she assumed that if OP divorced her husband he would get the home, smh. Once she found out that the house belonged to OP she kicked him to the curb. The husband should have gotten a DNA test immediately but since he waited too long and OP was beyond her child bearing years to decide he wanted a child. Why he didn't ask for DNA test was his major mistake. To be honest I think the mistress was already pregnant at that time. So she passed another man's child off as his. Mama's baby, Papa's maybe. He got what he deserved. Oh, and in response to the 2nd commenter, the child was not just kicked out, he was with his alleged father. The husband moved into OP's home so he had no claim to it in any legal action. You really should listen to the stories more closely so you don't come off as not knowing what you're talking about.
So many people post without listening to the story. They just look stupid in the end.

We trust our significant others and our own judgment that they are sincere. We are human. We make mistakes. Although, the significant steps made by one’s decision to be unfaithful must be acknowledged! It is more than just a weak error! It is catastrophic to those involved and a sign of a lack of principles and loyalty. The OP is not at fault here!!! She handled everything calmly like an intelligent person would/should. I have the utmost respect for this woman not having an emotional meltdown and reacting to the events thrown at her in a detrimental way. This OP is the definition of an adult!!!
Its so obvious to me the mistress pressed her hand in an effort to get the wife's house. Whatever her ex was telling her, she believed if they separated her property would somehow become his.

I feel bad for the kid since his mother lied to him and Matt. The boy didn’t deserve that and that was especially his mother’s fault and also the man he thought was his father’s fault. Matt got what he deserved though. He was having an affair for almost a decade against his wife. He thought his mistress’s son was his yet continued to lead his double life. He probably didn’t know his mistress was sleeping with other men but since “his son” didn’t look anything like him at all he should have had a DNA test done just to make sure.

For the second comment of the original post... There were no questions TO ask. If you see a child that's your lover's, but you know 100% isn't yours, then it's already crystal-clear that your lover cheated on you. So no, OP wasn't heartless for kicking out the child she knew full well wasn't hers, and who she knew was never invited.
For Nicole... She's probably worse than Matt. Firstly, she wanted OP to hand over her house, and secondly, she acted like she was part of the family, which... In a way, I guess one can argue that she IS part of OP's family, but that's COMPLETELY irrelevant since she was dating a MARRIED MAN, so... If anything, that'd make OP's family LESS LIKELY to give her stuff, since she tore the family apart. Nicole also seems to have cheated on Matt, so cheating on the cheater, which is... Very insane to think about. At least Nicole never got physical.

I think that the cheater got EXACTLY what he deserved. However, I am of the opinion that it should be required by law to do these DNA tests not just to figure out who your parents are (if you were raised by a foster family or a single/divorced parent) but also to find out if there are any hereditary illnesses.
