    I just sub'd yesterday after watching a video on a çarb repair. Bought an 88 model 180 today that supposedly would not start. This was the second video of a 180 that pulled up. Turns out the man it came from that couldn't get it to start after he took a break was right. It won't start if you don't turn off the blades. Flipped the switch and it fired right up and so far everything works just as it should. Gave a hundred for it and I'm very happy so far.

    I also have a 1987, 180 which has always worked very well. I got the bug to buy a bigger tractor 6 or 7 years ago and bought a JD 2520 compact with a diesel engine and mower deck plus a lift and bunch of implements.. It too works great but the 180 has sat for over 5 years without being used. I want to put it back in service and not rack so much time on the 2520. You have encouraged me to bite the bullet and get er done... Thanks for your well done video and great tips.. TH-cam has been a great source of help on many projects.
    Blessings to you!

    Hi Bruce...enjoying the videos immensely. In this particular video around the 6:26 mark....I'm interested in replacing a broken steering wheel on my original purchase (1988) 180. The steering wheel is two arms across the center with a pop out emblem; however I've noted your three arm steering wheel and wondered if you replaced the existing wheel or if it was done prior to your getting the 180.
    If you did replace the original....what are your chosen techniques to remove the steering wheel after this many years in place? I've been soaking the end of the column for the past couple of months and watching the amount applied in the emblem divot start to drain through...so something has given up a path to allow the thin oils to get absorbed. I've got gear pullers to borrow and perhaps a bearing puller to have something very solid to latch onto with the gear pullers. Any advice you may have will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks!
    By the way....I did replace the clutch/power belt recently. I'd rather mud-wrestle a pissed off Grizzley than do that again. It was a tale in and of itself with all the minor errors that made that job last all day. I didn't try your grinder trick to slip the belt around but learned a valuable lesson in "Do Not Disturb" anything that doesn't need to be moved if there's another route to take. It was a chore...but once the new belt replaced....I just about needed a seat belt to keep from getting thrown off.
    My JD180 is a hoss that won't give up....glad to see you've got your acquisition into action and humming on along.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This little tractor had been rolled before I got it (maybe that is where the wheel is different???)and I had to realign the steering gear on the end of the shaft, it was off alignment.

    • @softplan11
      @softplan11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bruce. Things tend to roll a lot easier with the rubber on the ground. However, I've had to put some muscle into getting one wheel out of a bottomless sinkhole and given the weight involved, if the steering wheel got whacked...I can see how it screw up a lot of things don't the shaft...as well as snapping the struts on the steering wheel itself. Mine is flexing above the center struts...pretty much held together by the rubber coating....so it's time go and replace.
      If your existing steering wheel slides on and matches the bolt hole with the newer version steering wheel...there's a lot more of those than the original two strut steering wheel (cheaper too without the legacy $bump)...I can see if I can break loose my old wheel from the shaft and shop around a bit rather than take some of the two strut offerings that come up occasionally.
      Again...any thoughts on breaking loose a 30+ year old steering wheel from the shaft. She's been under a garage roof her whole existence...hopefully any rust is minimal.
      Thanks!

    Bruce I have a question.. I just got this same mower and did the same thing you did.. My question is, is the brake peddle on the right just for an emergency brake or is it an actual brake. When I step on it it doesn't not stop the mower but when I step on the clutch side that stops it. When I step on the clutch and then the brake, it acts as an emergency brake.. I'm not sure if that,s how its supposed to be,

    Not sure I would have put a tube in the tires. Because it's a lawn tractor I would opt for some Fix-a-Flat. It worked great on a lawn mower I had out in the country where there were these weeds that had sharp thistles on them. Never another flat tire! Good video!

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks I use that too. The nice thing about the tube is I put Windshield washer antifreeze in the tube for rear weight and the rim isn't corroded in any way. There are pluses and minuses for everything eh.

    • @siaripop7
      @siaripop7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's WW antifreeze is an interesting idea. I live in the Nashville, TN area, how about you? Semi-truck repair facilities use a red thick gooey like product in their tubed tires. Sometimes there is as much as a quart of the stuff in the old tubes. It works like Fix-a-Flat, but for tubes.
      I was amazed that this was a 1987 model. My neighbor just bought a used one for $200.00 and all it needed was a new battery. (He thought the electric clutch was bad because the blades shut off. which a bad battery can cause also.)
      Another friend just bought an older model, like a 140, for $25.00. Good battery, but the front axles were worn out, so he surfaced welded them and dressed them up with a hand grinder, added a couple of new bushings and he is off cutting grass.
      Apparently these John Deere's are hardy lawn mowers!
