  • Comparison of two machines. Both function, run and drive. The devil is in the details.

Good video. I'm kind of on the lookout for a "bad" 318 to fix up. If you pay attention to the mechanical quirks instead of focusing on cosmetics, sometimes you can still sell a "bad" tractor for a good chunk of money. A cracked seat or scratched up hood doesn't really bother me when looking for a tractor...if the engine runs good with no leaks or blowby, the rest of the drivetrain is sound, and all shields/guards are in place and intact, it may still be profitable.

Thanks for the video. Prices have definitely gone up in 2022. I just spent over $200 putting V61 on my 318. I have a 1990 and my OCD is kicking in as more paint keeps flaking off😬. The tractor runs great so far! New to me this year.

Thank you very good points! I'm glad my neighbor after his passing gave me his 1988 332 JD with all the attachments. 50 ' deck, plow & material collection system. The refurbished radiator was very hard to find on E bay at $525 with shipping. Dealer wanted $910 for new one! So far invested about $800 & still gotta put deck on & mule together plus repair hood & all covers.

Nice Video. I currently bought a 86 JD 318 and everything worked as it should and i was wondering since it has a small minor crack on the frame rail where the frame curls and it bolts to the axle. do you know what may have caused that since the frame is very heavy duty. possible just a weaker point in the metal?

Good video. What’s a good price on a working 44 loader attachment?

Nice videos but I have a questions / problem. Just purchased a 318 to which I have replaced the driveshaft joints along with a new "split" yoke. My issues is that I still have a vibration. Do you have anything for me to look for. Also, it has the P218 engine but the "id" tag on the engine is missing therefore, do you have any knowledge on how to find the serial numbers, etc. Thanks again for your help.

I paid $400 for a non running 318 several years ago. Ended up with a broken rod but amazingly no wear on the cylinders. I’m still trying to decide if I’m capable of doing a complete rebuild like you did a couple years ago or just buy repower kit. My 316 I completely restored but I was lucky enough for it to be running and has great compression. The sound and power of the Onan is fantastic but still weighing my options for the 318.

Yep, I bought a 1972 140 JD, I paid 150.00, then I bought the 1500.00 18 hp bs vg, 195.00 rear tires, 125.00 front tires, 150.00 new JD seat, 125.00 conversation to h3, 300.00 to rebuild deck and 100.00 new deck belts, love this little machine, it’s a work horse, and bought some other things as well, I have owned it for 24 years, I have also bought the loader attachment, 3 point, dozer blade, front custom bumper, 4 rear weights, 4 front weights, 4 suitcase weights, duel wheel adapters for the rear, yep got a ton of money in it,

I was mowing with my 318. The next day I started up my 318 and it was making a very loud clicking noise in the engine. I'm not sure where the noise is coming from. What you think it might be?

I got myself a $100 318 in the condition of the “good” 318 with a 50 inch deck and she drove home

Do you know of any different coils that will work on a John Deere 317 Kohler kt17 engine.

Good comparison vid on JD 318’s. I didn’t know those things about the JD 425 that was “given” to me and in the end a zero acquisition cost it was not a bargain!

My Dad has a 318 with 3-point hitch option but he needs the lower arms. Do you know where to buy lower arms? How much value does the 3-point option add?

Enjoyed your videos, wondered if you could comment on my problem. I have a 318 JD Onan 9S23 engine that needs to be about 1/4 choke inorder to run. I have checked the fuel lines and filter and they are good. What would your recommend i do next? I have 9 various JD mowers and this is the only one that has this problem so I am stumped.
