    Great video! Clear, concise with excellent camera work. My tractor had the same issues, surging and no power. Run for a couple minutes and stall. I was using regular gas in it and i think that gunked it up. I tried that "mechanic in a bottle" stuff and it helped a bit but it was still stalling and had no power. Cleaned the carb as you showed and viola runs like a top now! Thanks so much!

    Gotta be careful with that cleaning needle. It has a rough finish on it and can actually grind the inside of the brass jets making the holes larger than they should be. And an air gun with a rubber tip is much better than one without. The rubber tip seals the holes and you don't get any blowback

  • @jdretiree2433
    @jdretiree2433 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At 8:23 you forgot to mention those 2 small jets have different part numbers which means they are different. Look at them and you can see the hole size is smaller on one than the other. If you happen to put them in the wrong place when reassembling, the engine will not run right as I found out on my tractor.

    Hello there, I'm not sure when you're going to get my message, I'm a mechanic for over 40 years, and I know what I'm doing, I have John Deere riding mower lx279 in excellent condition, it has 38 inches deck was making noise, so I decided to change the all spindles bearing, and that all the bearing on the deck, after I finished I turned all the pullies by hand they were very smoth, I installed all belts and the deck back, very time I engage the pto with full throttle barely the engine keep running, turning very heavy, even without mowing, .
    It has 17 HP Kawasaki had 48 deck before was running very strong.

    You might get more hits if you change the title. This engine is used in John Deere 170, 175, LX172, 176, and 178 lawn tractors, maybe more models too. Also Kubota tractors like the T1460. I would just put in the engine model number Kawasaki FC420V.
    I have been looking for the carb video for this engine. I'll be buying a can of carb cleaner tomorrow and fix my LX172.

    Great video, I have this carb on a 130 model john deere. It was running rough after setting a few seasons, surging with little power. I took the carb off, cleaned it up as you did, all valves etc look great now. Issue is my float I think, its the mikuni carb just like yours. I have tried various tang adjustments but the mower won't stay running. It starts if I drain the bowl via drain screw, then stops within a few seconds from, too much fuel ? I am not sure if the lower the float toward the ground the less fuel? or vice versa I've read conflicting reports which is rich or lean. I have yet to find instructions on this specific carb. At factory tang straight (as to tang and 0 degrees) the float sits past 90 about 15-20 degrees There really isn't a view point which to see the contact of the float flow valve. Any help appreciated.
    PS if I take the bowl off of float the mower is happy to start and burn off the fuel so I think I am getting too much fuel and its wetting the spark plug, which is new as well. Also put a new gasket in bowl and fuel pump is pumping lots of fuel, too much maybe? Don't know if there is an adjustment other than the turn valve under seat for fuel from gas tank.
    Thanks to anyone with a bit of guidance to get it running again.

    I am working on a 20ish year old Kaw FC420V as I write this. I got the bowl off just like you showed in the video and went to unscrew the first 2 items that you did. But my Carb seems to only have the short stubby one (first one you unscrewed) and NOT the second one. I look down where the second one is supposed to be and I see something like what you unscrewed but mine has absolutely no place to use a screw driver on it. It isn't that it is stripped It looks machined and flat. so my question is should all carbs on all FC420V have the top screw and then the jet below it also or are all cargs different and maybe just some of the FC420V s have a carb like you are showing. OR is there a way to get the thing below it out that I don not know of? your fast reply would be greatly appreciated.

    I've got an 88' 265 w/ the 540 -- nearing 1,700 hours. Runs great, only like to start on idle. Had to adjust the throttle settings as the Gov wasn't allowing the the throttle to close fully when machine was off. If you've got a hard-start issue when hot, try setting the throttle to idle, reach in and push the governor arm to the closed position (push to front of machine) and it should start right up. It has to be below 60 degrees ambient and the motor cold before choke is needed.

    @larrymunday7519 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great job Donny, my issue is you using the torch cleaning tips in the bore of a flow rated jet. Wen you do you are putting fine scratches in the metering jets, changing the flow rate,
    The bores are flow rated to the carburetor and when you get in to multiple cylinder machines you do not want to disturb those flow ratings. i always used copper wire to do this, (very find strand)whether it was twisting up several strands or using one strand to clear the bore. Use the copper wire in long strands twisted to saw back and forth through the metering jet. Copper is softer than brass.Experience with a lot of motorcycles.

    Good video! I have the same motor on my LX172 and a similar rough running problem. Your video showed me exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing. Ed

    Wonderful, informative, easy to follow video. I followed every step with the same model John Deere 175 last Spring and it ran much better. This Fall it is giving me problems so I plan to clean the carb again just as Donyboy has shown. Thank you so much for this video!

    I took my carburetor off to clean it and I dropped it on concrete. Now I have fuel blowing out of the air intake. Other than the float, what could it be?

    Always enjoy your how to videos Don, thanks for posting them. Can you soak small engine carbs in Chem-Dip as long as you remove the Viton parts and other sensitive parts or will it pit the aluminum?

    Thanks for the video. I have a machine that has a 14 horsepower vanguard that will start but won't stay running. It starts to lope and then dies. Choke helps but can't keep it running. Sounds like it needs a good cleaning. Tom
