I was thinking of loading up my John Deere and dropping it off at a repair shop and getting ripped off but this video saved me. Thanks for sharing this video with us. Awesome job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Sir, ❤ thank you!! My husband passed away last year, taking care of my home alone is overwhelming and expensive. He left me his barely used John Deere mower. I wasn’t thrilled but it beats pulling on a lawnmower starter rope. I’m 65yrs old. I’m a retired RN and used to be pretty strong but unless I begin weight training, my strength will no increase. So, I have never done engine work, pretty intimidating actually but this video and all of your positive information and ideas have given me pause to go down that path of learning. The solenoid on the tractor was dead. You have no idea what a joy and relief to have fixed the green machine myself!! Thank you so much, you have blessed a widow. You will have an extra measure of help from above for your generous service, my dear husband has rallied other heavenly beings to surround you with blessings for providing for his devoted wife. Thank you!!!❤
Thanks for the instruction! Saved me a ton of time and money. I quickly replaced the solenoid and immediately bragged to my wife how resourceful I was. LOL
This was tremendously helpful. I'll admit I have a very low mechanical knowledge base and your method of bypassing the solenoid was brilliant! Thank you.
Hi Don from Australia My D110 was doing the clicking thing last weekend, this weekend I planed to have a look to see what the cause is so this video was very timely. Your videos have helped me a lot over the years so thank you for past help and future help.
I was getting nothing from my John Deere so I had the battery tested and it was bad, it was an old battery. Put the new one in and still nothing. Found your video and paused it to go check my solenoid and that was it!!! Great video!!! Thank you for your content, I’m a subscriber now 👍
Great information! I'm not good at working on lawnmowers, but after watching this video I installed the solenoid in ten minutes with no problems. Awesome video, Thank you!
Thank you Donyboy for an excellent video on how to bypass the solenoid to determine if the problem was the solenoid or the battery or the starter. You are an excellent teacher and mechanic.
Great video. I have never done this before, but you explained it, so well, I figured why not givebit a try. At first, I thought it was the starter. Thank God I saw this first and didn't spend money unnecessary. The solenoid cost me $24 at my local John Deere store. It took me all of 30 mins to remove and install the new one. (My once again first time) Once finished, Jet (my mowers name) cranked right on up . What a blessing. I so glad i didnt have to pay John Deere to do this for me. Thanks again. You have a new subscriber.
Thank you much! This helped me to discover I need to replace the solenoid and can easily do that myself. Sharing this knowledge is one thing that makes TH-cam great.
Want to thank you for diagnosing my problem. Cleaned my ground wire at the engine block, battery was charged but it would click sometimes 30 times or more before it started. I was ready to replace the starter. Went down and jumped the terminals and mine started!!!!
@@donyboy73 Ok, replaced solenoid and still one click won't start. I still can "screwdriver" start it. Is there like a normal "kill switch" that I could wire between the two positive connections? My solenoid looks about the size and shape of yours. (Allis Chalmers AC130 42" 2690812) Thanks!
Great video, thank you for posting. I had exactly these symptoms with the very same lawn mower about three years ago. Your seven minute video at that time would have saved me several hours of try this and try that ......

nice video thanks. I had a devil of a time with my JD x320 same situation clicking and not starting. However on my machine as I am sure you know, the solenoid is bolted onto the starter and also moves the bendix gear of the starter to the flywheel..It would only fail to start intermittently (when my brother in law was borrowing of course). I used to have a few older Ford cars and trucks, and very often the same problem would occur. You shut the car down, then come back to hear that clicking. The starter solenoid would be mounted on the right front inner fender under the hood. You could short across it to start your car, but, ultimately replacing the solenoid would have to be replaced. I learned to keep a couple extras on board. Not the same thing, but Chrysler cars had a resistor mounted on the firewall. When it failed, no start. So again, when I had any Chrysler made car, Dodge, Plymouths, and of course Chrysler, I kept a few resistors on board. Good vid.👍

The problem is, the Seluloid is brand new that I just put on there straight from the john deere shop. So both should be good but I still can’t get it to start. The fuse is good, I replaced the sparkplug and checked the brake button and the seat safety

Great video Don! Thanks for sharing the tips! I have a John Deere riding lawn mower model D100, every time I shut it off, I get a loud boom ( I’m assuming this is called “backfire”. What could be the reason? I replaced the fuel solenoid but continues occasionally. Any ideas?
Gosh Dony I wish I had this last year......I have a 2005 John Deere LT133 and I had several issues and I think I still have a couple. But I replaced the solenoid and that definitely helped but also the Brake/clutch pedal switch which you showed us last year and the lift deck switch were also two checks. If I pull back on the deck lift lower bar thing that also has one of the gray safety switches under the body. I found nothing would happen when I turned the key and then if I pulled the deck lift bar as far towards as I could it would start. SO I know I have to replace the switch also. That might be a help for JD owners as well.
Had a John deere once that I thought had a bad solenoid because it was clicking and would sometimes crank. Replaced the solenoid and starter and it still did it. Turns out the ignition switch was failing, and it wasn't passing enough current to properly operate the solenoid. New switch cured the issue for good.
Once again, DonyBoy taught me something! Quick question for anyone, especially Canadian folks, where do you buy your parts online? I have to replace my starter on my D140, as the bendix doesn't move up properly anymore... even after proper lubrification.
I have a random question do you happen to know what type of cable lugs do you use to replace old ones? I can't find anything on it. It is the lugs that connect the solenoid to the battery
Ah very nice and good tip. I already knew what the problem was when you tried starting it... this used to be a problem on some cars back in the day and they made that exact same sound. Good video and thank you for this!
what do you think about the wash port on the mower deck on those John Deere 100 series mowers? Should people use it? I hear a lot of people saying it doesn't work. Or they say don't use it, it'll rust the deck faster and ruin the spindle bearings.
Those Solenoid terminals were rusted and likely high resistance connections. Sometimes Cleaning them and other terminals will cure the problem I have found.
Excellent advice! I had a similar clicking/non-start on my Cub Cadet yesterday. It had been running but I turned it off in my back acre for a few minutes. When I tried starting it.....it clicked like your example. I checked the battery......12.5v....good, checked for positive charge to the starter when key was engaged.....power. I then looked at the hour meter on the dash while turning the key and noticed it spelled out "Low Oil Pressure". I checked the oil level and it was down to the low mark and sitting on a slight incline. I leveled it up and added oil until full. Started right up! Possibly the low oil level plus the incline set off a safety feature I am not aware of.
I have a Cub Cadet XT1 that wouldn't restart when the engine was hot. When it cooled off, it would eventually start. I doubt if the oil pressure would be the cause of an electrical problem. I replaced the starter after only 2 years, but now it's starting to do the same thing. I just keep the tractor running all the time until I'm finished cutting the grass until I can determine if maybe I should replace the solenoid or not.
@@jpozenel I agree. I am not convinced about the oil pressure, but after checking the wiring.....all seemed good. Will have to be vigilant and try to determine a cause. Good luck with your XT1.
To test the starter by connecting the starting directly to the battery, do you have to do anything else for it to crank, like put the parking break on or key in or anything?

Turns out the ignition switch was failing, and it wasn't passing enough current to properly operate the solenoid. New switch cured the issue for good.
Yep, it was the fuse! Thanks, Don!
Once again, DonyBoy taught me something! Quick question for anyone, especially Canadian folks, where do you buy your parts online? I have to replace my starter on my D140, as the bendix doesn't move up properly anymore... even after proper lubrification.
you might find a good deal on amazon
@@donyboy73 hi man I have a 1980's turf trac MTD , I have a video on it , think you can help me out
Thanks Donny another informative video ..
Well done, Dony!
I have a random question do you happen to know what type of cable lugs do you use to replace old ones? I can't find anything on it. It is the lugs that connect the solenoid to the battery
Great video as always. Thankyou Sir.
Ah very nice and good tip. I already knew what the problem was when you tried starting it... this used to be a problem on some cars back in the day and they made that exact same sound. Good video and thank you for this!
So well explained. Thanks
what do you think about the wash port on the mower deck on those John Deere 100 series mowers?
What you used to engage the brake to start the engine with out sitting on the seat?
To test the starter by connecting the starting directly to the battery, do you have to do anything else for it to crank, like put the parking break on or key in or anything?
Great tips 👌 thank you
