  • The Young Rascals reeled off a succession of top 20 U.S. hits, including "A Girl Like You" (1967), "How Can I Be Sure" (1967), "It's Wonderful" (1968), and "A Beautiful Morning" (1968) the song featured here being one of the most covered of all their songs. The band peaked during the pinnacle of the so called "Flower Power" era of the late sixties. Music and Lyrics were written by bandmembers Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati.

Everyone was real back then. No million dollar plastic surgery face and body, most could really sing no auto tune. I can hardly stand the music of today, I use the word “music” loosely. I know this isn’t 80’s, but that’s the decade I grew up in and man do I miss those days. We were innocent growing up. Nobody is innocent anymore. The internet has taken so much from us.

I was in a little town called Titusville Florida going to HS when this song came out, falling in love with a girl named Linda. She came to hear a band I was helping one night and fell in love with our Rhythm Guitar player. She didn't have to tell me, it was obvious. They ended up getting married and are still together to this day. I still have a soft spot in my heart for her.

This great song is part of the tradition of pop music- 50's, 60's, 70'- that can't be beat to this day. The pop music of today doesn't even come close. The melodies, lyrics, and great performers (groups and solo artists) of that era remain incomparable. I was right in the middle of it all, and looking back, I'm very grateful.

I first heard "How Can I Be Sure?" when I was a small boy in the blue collar town of Manville NJ.
I was touched by the song even at that age. I was able to feel the angst and uncertainty turn to hope and then to trust and affirmation.

My favorite song from the The Young Rascals/ Rascals. It still gives me chills 56 years later. I was only 4 when I first heard it riding in our single Mom Carol s Ford Falcon. Eddie and Felix are credited as co- writers but Eddie s brother David also contributed to the song. I wish Eddie had been allowed to sing lead on more songs. What a beautiful voice!!! I recall AM stations at the end of that year playing down the top 100 of 1967. I think if this song came out 5 years earlier or 5 years later it would have received much more acclaim.

David wrote this..w :a couple of lines from Felix. But David wrote this so u all learn about our beautiful history!!! And Eddie? Thanks for the fabric of my life! I know these kids: and they are lovely and beautiful and just down to earth. I only write this because I want our beautiful musical history to never be forgotten…

This was a very commercial style of music that was just so so and compared to today's style of music this stands alone as a great song and how to present classic music.

I've given up trying to analyse what makes this so beautiful and special. Lots of things, I suppose - Eddie's perfect soul, the ravishing arrangement, the powerhouse that was the Briggati / Cavaliere songwriting union or the impossibly lovely melody. I have heard this dozens of times and each time it's a wonderful moment.

Yeah I've been thinking about that. I was 15 when this song first showed up. Reflecting back, I think this song captures perfectly, the blend of passion and innocence of the time. It was a product of that time. Perhaps what makes it a thousand times more haunting now, is the fact that it brings back something so powerful that isn't around so much these days. But the song can snap me back to the summer of 1967, close my eyes and revisit the power of that age, the youth, the mystery, the wonder and the magic. There is nothing sarcastic or world-weary in this song, nothing confrontational, political, hard or harsh. Instead, it is a sweet message that owns a completely different kind of strength. When Eddie sings the song - it kinda sings him, too. That's a real special thing.

It's the MELODY that gets stuck in you're head.
Modern music Seriously lacks in Melody when writing. Melody!!!!

@@heartofgoldfilmandtheatre Sure is. Because at the age of 15, that song predicted to me that the very next year at the age of 16, it would all come true in my life.

Oh my gosh, after all this time, I never understood that the dancers were more important than the Rascals. When I next hear this beautiful song on the radio, I’ll think only of them. I turned 18 in 1967.
