The association should retrieve those newspapers and frame them. They could mount them on the wall next to the stairwell along with a framed print-out that explains their significance in English and/or Cantonese.
great content from the heyday of Chinatown Gangs , use to run those streets and roofs back in the day. Lots of hidden spots , great that you are showing some of them. Keep in the great work
Thank you Mike, Bighead, J for taking us inside the Tung On Association! I have always wanted to know what they looks like. And thank you all for taking the time to explain every compartment and the exact spots of the killings of Norman and Mike. Being a huge Chinese American history buff, this is all a part of real and important Chinese American history and culture. I appreciate you all so much!
Damn this is really incredible - thank you so much for bringing us into the building. I am fascinated by the turf wars in Chinatown from the 70s - 90s - are there any good books/memoirs about the era you recommend that were written by people who were actually there?
This association building looks really cool hopefully the other ones will let you in to film as well. Also nice portrait of George Washington and Dr Sun Yat Sen in the doorframe.
I remember every time I would walk down Division St we would have to duck to avoid getting shot. After that started walking the longer way home via East Broadway. Those were the days.
I think I went to school with J’s lil bro Michael in PS2. Can someone pls confirm if his lil bro is indeed him. How are they all doing now? Keep up the good stories !
Great video showing how it was and before it was highrises. I'm from Malaysia and our Chinatown used to have Kapitan Cina, a mayor of sorts to rule over Chinatown created by the government. 1) Were there somewhat a same Kapitan position in America? 2) Do Chinese Gangs in America leans more with the Communist or Nationalist Sun Yat Sen?
I am from broom St and I am 58 years old i was at many if your location i use to do a lot of pick ups for boy George. i sat many times with boy went dealing with fry Rice and shit. Crazy days shit one time behind the tombs. The park that had so many dealings i use to buy fireworks all the time and one time a Chinese men drop a box with a bunch of Chinese money Lord it was so much and i didn't know much but i new it was money he told. Me and my bro yo you watch up and down for other Chinese people while he pick up all the money then he gave me and my bro a bunch of American money 4 hundred dollars shit was so crazy cause he wasn't worry from us shit it was from he's own people hahaha.
I’m not trying to make fun of this but it’s interesting to hear their New York Chinese English accents and the one guy saying he can’t read Chinese but he was speaking it fine
Has the Tong On Association has become something of a social club for former members of the gang to socialize and reminisce? I’m laboring under the assumption that a location so well-known among NYPD and local civilians would be unsuitable for active gangland activities, aside from some potential gambling amongst the Mahjong players. Edit: That’s answered toward the end of the video.
The Chinatown looks very new compared to the one in LA and SF. It's hard to picture what happened before. I am sure they torn down and rebuilt a lot there. NYC is all about $$$
@@yucheunglam4019 Not really clear. It seemed Norman and his crew "stepped over the line" on Jack's turf. See the old interview. th-cam.com/video/SNjwdhftupM/w-d-xo.html

It’s considered illegal gambling when there’s an exchange of money and the house benefits from it. It’s now a place for seniors to get together and play mahjong for fun. There are many senior centers in Chinatown where the elderly get together and play mahjong without any exchange of money. It’s understandable when a Non-Asian see this, they’ll think something illegal is going on.
If there’s any illegal activity going on in a Tong association, the Feds would surely know about it way before any Karen call it in. They have many informants out there.
Thanks!
Thank you again for your support!

I never trusted the Italians but the Chinese were always on point... smart and very wise business men
We’ve had dealings with some really stand up Italians. One guy was a Godfather to a Dai Lo and another was a mentor to me.

Whats the purpose of Tung On Assoications and other associations in today's society? Like do they now act as community center /support group?
Great question to ask us on our LIVE session. We can explain it in detail

Yes, it was blocked off. Maybe next time we can show the viewers different escape routes.
