- Esports is both an extremely visual world, meaning that the highlights it creates will always be there to remind those involved of their past. For better . . . or for worse.
Their role in a clip that is shared over and over becomes, in time, one of the things that makes them recognizable.
Even if that moment is uncharacteristic, a one-off, or something they’d later get revenge for.
But for North American fighting game master Justin Wong, the past is all around him, all the time.
And it’s not always good.
Renowned for his game knowledge, rock-solid fundamentals and never-say-die attitude, Justin won championships in multiple titles and built a legacy that will last as long as competitive fighting games do.
There’s just one little problem.
The biggest clip the fighting game community - and maybe competitive gaming as a whole - has ever produced shows Justin Wong getting absolutely destroyed.

Justin Wong saying “let’s go Justin” before testing a Ken online tells you everything you need to know about how excellently positive of a person he is.
Justin Wong didn't "get bodied" in that clip. He had his expert play perfectly countered by an expert opponent. There is literally NOTHING shameful about that moment for EITHER player.
The rest of us scrubs were lucky to get to bare witness to such a moment of sheer perfection and it would not have been nearly as impressive without an upper echelon player like Justin Wong on the other end.

Agreed. Justin played the obvious move with the best chances of working. He just didn't count on Daigo being able to parry all of the seventeen frame perfect inputs in a row.
With what we know today he would've tried to make it a bit harder to parry (do it from a bit closer, maybe wait for Daigo to block a hit). Instead he went at almost full screen distance, and made it pretty obvious that he was going for a super. Of course he did that thinking that the move was un-parryable so I get why he wasn't as cautious as someone will be today.
Also if I remember correctly, Daigo won pretty clean, even if Justin won that match it would still probably be his only win against him.
Still what the dude accomplished is undeniable. Huge respect for him, he got Top 3 in a fighting game and era where only Japanese players were starring.

According to Urban Dictionary, it either means to be exhausted by your sparring partner or to get utterly destroyed by an opponent. Neither of those describe the Daigo Parry. The titular player was *on his last pixel of health* when he pulled it off. If anyone seemed to have exhausted their sparring partner, it was Justin. That's a big part of what MAKES the moment so epic.
Anyone who says they wouldn’t go for the almost guaranteed chip kill against the best player in the world in losers finals of the biggest tournament in the game is a damn liar.
Justin went home to become a family man, but he didn't stop there, he just wins tournaments at home nowadays while his daughter watches. Last year he literally won over 100 tournaments from all sorts of fighting games.
I heard he tried to get parried 100 times this year for ach, last time I know the status are 8/100
I'd say that Evo moment '37 of diago parry on Justin Wong was what made fighting games today with massive influence. What made chip not kill allowing 1 more block. What made fighting games go from basic blocking and trading combos to putting in more parry characters and that it was actually viable to pull off in competition; not just another gimmick that all fighting games utilize now. Honestly if it didn't happen I think parry wouldn't be in half the fighting games today bc it was just a gimmick back then.

I always watch Justin's TH-cam content. I can vouch that he's always getting parried 😂 but he's awesome that he branches out to other Fighting games. Makes his content fresh.
He's doing it for the lols, just to see if the other player can parry him. And I've seen him face people that are pretty mediocre but for some reason are really good at parrying that super (like they only play the game hoping they will face Justin and parry his Chun Li super).

Justin is notorious for winning all the early competitions in every new fighting game. Like he rolls up on every new MK game, wins the first couple tournaments, then dips. Incredibly powerful energy
Justin is one of the most iconic FGC player ever. 9 EVO titles says it all. Despite the unlucky moments he still is relevant across multiple titles. Unlike the other unlucky player named Perfec13gend who just kinda vanished
I played Justin in a local arcade in his prime. I was half decent in MvC2 in local arcade then came Justin and made me look like he was playing arcade mode. He is damn good.
What I extremely love is that the guy is *SO FUCKING GOOD* that he actually manages to give everyone he fights against the chance to do it by learning their playstyle in seconds and doing the exact damage to let them at 1hp everytime.
Despite being the one who got clapped in one of the most legendary clip of E-Sports history, Justin took it like a champ and farmed content out of it, of course people respect him

The level of play of everything physical sports and esports just boomed thanks to all the videos on the internet people see and learn what is possible in a game and try to do it increasing the floor of the game insanely

I know the fighting game videos don't get as many views as valorant or league of legends but thanks for making them anyway. I love the quality you guys put into your videos and have been subscribed for a few years now.
It's a shame cause fighting games are probably the pinnacle of skill in eSports. But since it's not easy to pick up like those games you mentioned, it'll never be as popular

I was there in the audience (only Evo I ever attended) and the video footage has never done the amount of noise justice. I could not even hear myself screaming
The release of SFIV and MVC3 is when I discovered the FGC, and so, to me, JWong will always be the good guy, the hero of the old guard, and the number one guy you would want to teach your own son to play fighting games at the top level.
Justin is just a chill dude he’s a great face for the fighting game community. In fact a lot of the fighting game community are cool ppl surprisingly considering the nature of the games

Yeah, didn't want to say anything, but it's clear that hiding his hairline is a lost cause at this point. I know it's hard admitting that, I also have long hair and the thought of shaving my head when things start going south (or probably north is the better term) is giving me anxiety.
The clip is honestly super legendary status I was in the smash community and I knew that scene I love the energy it captured fighting games the casters going wild also makes the clip
Yeah, I love being Daigo and recreating this moment and all, but give me the practice scenario where I play as Justin and watch my combo get parried perfectly everytime.

Justin is a really cool person. He takes the parries on the chin and compliments people for being able to do them. It probably goes back to his playstyle, where he roles and takes the punches just to spin it back on others in a positive way. He takes the “lameness” of being beaten in a spectacular fashion and turned it into a profoundly popular thing for him and the FGC. It may be the Daigo Parry, but Justin owns it lol.
Funny thing about the whole event is how at lot of people got a Mandela effect around it.
Some people think this was the Finals and the last round

Some people claim to have watched the previous "Evo Moments"

The only people who think Daigo won the tournament or this was the final are kids who werent born or old enough to follow esports when Evo moment 37 went down.
They only saw this clip with no context and therefor made assumptions. Assuming this was grand finals because the clip is so hyped. Assuming Daigo won the tournament as this seems like the grand finals. It was not. Neither of them won that year.
They dont even know this was Evo 2004. They dont know that Justin won the next round.
The Mandela Effect is when something is collectively remembered wrongly.
This is just kids misinterpreting a clip.
As they werent even around to remember.

I don't follow the FGC history, but I've seen EVO Moment #37 countless times.
TIL that it was the LOSERS finals and that the winner that year was not Justin Wong or Daigo, but a guy named KO. Given the hype of the play and how legendary the two players are in FGC history, I kinda just assumed it was grand finals.
I was literally at that Evo and watching it happen is person was nuts!

Jwong during peak was the main villain, he was the big boss fight for every tournament. It’s just that he was bamboozled by Ume’s magic.
Getting clucthed by Daigo is a privilege not anyone could get.
I dont think he was ever considered the villain? He was always cheered on by a huge crowd and the substantial part of the audience wanted him to win. Back then was the only US players to stand up to the Japanese gods making it to grand final to throw down. Only thing was people didnt like his turtling playstyle but I dont know about villains. Unless maybe you know sth I dont

None of these tournaments have Clay Fighter, thus I can't take them seriously.

Honestly, i think Justin throws the raw chun li super on purpose to see if the other guy can parry it. At least that's what it feels like to me. It speaks to his character that he himself continues to keep that moment alive for the fgc.

Fighting games biggest thing holding them back is the difficulty and very steep learning curve. They are getting better at easing new players in, and a lot of younger gamers are more willing to put the grind that it requires to be decent but, there is still much ground to gain before it really snowballs to be as popular of an eSport as I know it can be. I think Riots fighting game will go a long way, specifically because of the truly free to play aspect (which unfortunately isn't really an option for any fighting game up to this point).

I think its so ignorant to assume someone got destroyed of a single clip. Justin is a 9 time EVO champion and won the most EVO titles in the tourneys history.
This epic clip paved the way for the new era of fighting games and brought millions of players to competitive fighting games.
That clip blow out not only because of the 15 parries comeback, but also with the super defensive play style Justin played at that time, which most of the players/viewers don’t like.
If you see the full fight Diego vs Justin you can see Diego just taunt him when Justin back off all the time.
He was not hated because of being too good in fighting game, he was hated because of being super ultra defensive.
Justin Wong was never hated. He always had a huge following and was cheered on every game, every tourney he played.

People can do the daigo parry cause players now can try to practice it. The game literally gave the tools for it there's a mode for it so you can try to recreate the famous daigo parry. What they didn't account was the stakes at that time and the pressure on pulling that insane move. Diago was in that zone and he did that in a tournament.
Being a fighting game player Daigo parried is one of the greatest achievement you really need to get

Did you see the packed hall of that EVO 2004 match? The FGC was already huge back then. Even Battle of the Bay days were huge. Not as mainstream and sponsored as now but huge nonetheless
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the way they say tatsumaki-senpu-kyaku really fast was because there were vowels that weren't fully pronounced and instead saounded like tats'mak'-senpu-kyak'. Found that out by listening to the SFX of Street Fighter Alpha on NeoGeo hehe. Oh and full respect for both Justin and Daigo, They have skills that I can't even begin to think how to develop. I appreciate their talents and their contribution to the FGC, even though I'm a Tekken player, but I do play other FGs but not to the extent as I do Tekken.

Moment 37 and the Zed outplay are basically on the same level of replayability, everyone remembers Ryu’s defeated face as much as everyone remembers Justin frantically mashing his fight stick while getting parried. Both moments have one line that when spoken, everyone knows what you are talking about. “Faker, what was that?” “Let’s go Justin!”
I dont think they are even remotely the same. EVO 37 is a moment from 2004 and is single handedly responsible for reviving the fighting game community bringing in millions of new players in and affecting game developers on the party systems. This moment changed the entire infrastructure of fighting games and put eSports on the map of countless people. This was still before TH-cam and a huge legend passed on by word of mouth until it became viral shortly after TH-cam was out. The Zed incident is famous in league but not a legend in the eSport world like Evo Moment 37

This moment for me is bigger for Daigo, however, I will forever yell "Let's Go Justin!" just because it was so earnest in it's delivery.
