      I tell friends stories from the FGC. Friends who aren't even into esports, but are just bored. I spin the tale the way thescore does and it almost *always* gets them hooked in, eventually watching nearly an hour of highlights, amazing comebacks, crazy tournament runs, and unbelievable domination across multiple games. It's very, very effective.

      Well unlike team eSports games, where blame and glory can be shared and pined down on someone else, here, that its not possible. You(the player) are the solo response for the outcome be it a Victory or a loss, it will be all "you".
      It might be little over reacting, but as time goes on, sometimes a player will carry an entire nation on its backs through Top8 all the way to the top.

    Daigo's parrying of Chun Li's super was so epic that people forget that he didn't even win the tournament. Just proves that winning isn't everything. Daigo may have lost the tournament but he won the event and ultimately put the FGC on the map as it should be.

  • @Drumboardist
    @Drumboardist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +338

    The MOST important thing to remember about Daigo vs. JWong, is that Justin had done this EXACT THING in the previous round, to close out his victory. So Daigo, KNOWING that Justin would fish for an errant action --> SA II --> clear victory......would do things that LOOKED like he might "do something", but in every instance he would *also* be tapping forward.
    (For the kids at home? This is how you parried. A fair amount of before/after frame data to work with, but it was PRETTY hard to reflexively *parry* things, and harder to get the timing for a red-parry, so....you pretty much had to KNOW it was happening, or was hard-coded to know when the block --> parry timing was occuring, which was SO precise that you couldn't counter-correct on Chun-Li's SA II.)
    So Daigo KNEW he was in the same position, and was reflexive-parrying on every "tic" that Chun-Li was offering. Eventually, Justin gambled, Daigo hit the first parry, and CONTINUED TO HIT THE RIGHT TIMING TO PARRY THE REST OF THE 15 HITS....
    .....AND ALSO HIT THE BIGGEST COMBO HE COULD, WHICH -- seriously, I'unno if anyone has done the math on it or, but I'm curious -- WAS EXACTLY THE NECESSARY AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO WIN THE MATCH. (And was preeeeetty hard to do, on the fly, with charge-buffering and reflexive reactions to stuffs that was bein' thrown at you, and g'aaaaaaaaaah!)

      I wish the narrator had gone into a bit more detail about Evo moment 37. I've read a bit about it and it's not just that Daigo did the unreal parry it's that 1) he baited Justin into it by feeding his super meter with fireballs he could absorb 2) Justin said later that nobody even knew that was possible and had never seen anything like it. It makes the moment even more ridiculous.

  • @PlanetJohnny

    Chun-Li's SA2 is actually 17 parries for the other characters, but only 15 for Ryu and Ken, because of the pushback.
    It goes 8-8-1 for everyone else, and 7-7-1 for the shotos.
    Daigo knew that. THAT'S what's really crazy to me about 37.

      You actually need to parry slower than the strikes would usually hit (about 1/4 speed) with a slightly longer gap before the 2nd round of kicks, to be fair it is a lot easier with an arcade stick or if you 'tap' the analogue stick if you don't have an arcade stick . At the very least Brandon, it shows why we love games. This was back in a time where so many people didn't get 'why we loved games' 'why play them so much' 'games are for kids & they are easy.' Its the community, the amazing feeling of managing to do the impossible just when you needed too, when you're on 1 hp against that final boss.
      It takes skill even to complete a single player game on hard, and this is the peak of brilliant skill. Moments like this are why game developers found the inspiration to make more multiplayer games which are everywhere today.
      They did change games as we know it, inspired many and made others respect what we do. So you know, it'd be nice if gamers at least took notice.

    For me, the Alex Valle vs Bonchan match was really memorable is because the matchup is almost impossible for Hugo theoretically. But Uncle Valle prove us wrong!

    • @danlorett2184
      @danlorett2184 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      It is normally, especially because Bonchan was playing near perfect anti-grab game. But Uncle Valle didn't go for a grab (except catching the jump back in the last round if you count Ultra2 and the one meatsquasher) the entire match - he just abused Bonchan with Hugo's better range. If Valle had played like a normal Hugo player and schemed for grabs, he would have gotten dumpstered hard. But Sagat playing anti-grab is literally Sagat sitting at the worst possible range to deal with Hugo's normals and claps. Hugo's normals are kind of garbage, but when spaced properly they outrange a ton of characters and the goofy frame data doesn't really matter as much. Bonchan literally sat at the perfect range and got slapped around by normals and claps thinking that grabs were the bigger threat.

      So in short, Uncle Valle just outplayed Bonchan in the most textbook definition of the term. He knew what he had to work with, he knew what he was up against, he read his opponent, he used surprise to his advantage, and he won. He (more or less) did everything right. He had his title and his legacy for a reason, and he made sure not to let people forget it.

    11:28 I believe this is a perfect example of conditioning your opponent to do what you want. You see hugo do a few claps in succession which in turn there is only 2 responses for that 1) block the attack but get no punish damage 2) back hop to avoid the attack and punish. However hugo knew that he would choose option 2 to try and get damage because he forced him to do so which in turn he punished with an anti air. A true example of conditioning.

      Stuff like this is why I wish I was better at fighting games. Beat traditional one I’m good at is MK and even then I say I’m good cause I can do the inputs of the specials…but that’s about it really

      @@thetrophygamer3606Two friends and I were "good" each at different fighting games, one of them at KoF, the other one at MK and I at SF because we knew combos like you sayed but that was it, so each dominated the other in their own fighthing games just because that.
      Until one day I tried to beat SF games at the hardest difficulty for a challenge and also played some online games, and learned that playing as I was was very noobish, that I needed to play accordinly to the enemie, read them, react and even condition them as the original coment mentioned. After that even when I didn't knew combos for the other games my friends couldn't beat me anymore, yes I loosed sometimes but I was dominating them with just footsies, and everytime I had a good life advantage I let them hit me at wake ups specials/supers/etc to condition them to belive that wake ups worked, so they keep doing it giving me free punishes.
      I even told them how I started to dominate them, so they tried to not be that predectible and tried to play footsies too but it takes some time to get used to it and sometimes you forget about it.
      Haven't reunited with them since covid thou so I hope they didn't forgot and give me a.good fight next time (haven't played any figthing game in years too but this video hyped me again for them)

He knew his chances of beating Poongko were low; Poongko was HOT this year. It would have most likely been a pretty boring 2-0 blow-up if he didn't decide to have fun with it, and Poongko was willing to take the 'bait', which turned it from a potentially boring one-sided match to a really cool, funny, exciting moment.
