- Welcome to Part 3 of our Mario Bros. retrospective!
In this episode, we take a look at Mario's first proper portable adventure, chronicle his journey to cartoons, comics, and movie theaters, and celebrate one of the most monumental video game releases of all time.
In this series, we aim to tell the story of the Mario Bros. series as it unfolded for North American audiences. Once again, this episode delves a bit more deeply into the Japanese side of things because it's impossible to understand the full scope of what was going on with the Mario franchise without looking at what was happening overseas.
But back to the point, we are not only looking at the games themselves, but the historical context surrounding them, and what it was like being a fan as these games were being released.

Hot damn that voice over work is sexy smooth. 10/10, will recommend.
Can confirm, Kris indeed has a face for radio.
Three is still my favorite Mario Bros game. Fantastic video! Could have easily mistaken it for a Gaming Historian upload.
That’s high praise! Thanks!
Makes sense, considering you hear Banjo Guy Ollie's take on Mario music in the background.
@@GamingDelight Ollie's the best. He did a bunch of Metroid songs for me to use in my Metroid video a few years ago (his covers were much better than the video I used them in). His music makes everything better.

Maybe I should get around to using some of his covers for my videos.
@@GamingDelight I just checked out your channel. These Chronicles of Mario videos look great! I know what I'll be watching over the next few days. You seem to be going way more in-depth than I am too, which is quite the daunting task! I salute your efforts!
Also, big congrats on getting so many more views than my videos! I'll crack that TH-cam algorithm one of these days...
As for Ollie, I can't imagine he'd have a problem with you using his tunes. Obviously ask his permission, but I can't imagine him saying no, especially with well-made content like this.
Toward the end you are saying Japan didn’t have Super Mario Land when the West did. No way!
It's pretty wild! In Japan, Super Mario Land came out on April 21, 1989, a full 6 months AFTER Super Mario Bros. 3 came out on Famicom. Where here in North America, Super Mario Land came out 7 months BEFORE Mario 3. It's crazy how different Mario was in Japan during this time period, and how it changes the perception of how the games evolved over time.
@@stoneagegamer it never even occurred to me that Super Mario Land was released after SMB3 in Japan. Thanks! Guess he was just in a few spin-offs like 3D Hot Rally by that point.
