I ended up getting about 15 minutes into this video and took a break to playthrough the entire game. Normally I just watch the videos, but nostalgia bit me and I just had to go and play. Mario games just hold up so well, even after decades.
They definitely do! They are simple enough that anyone can learn play and enjoy them and still challenging enough that serious gamers can enjoy them too. They really are timeless games. I played Mario 3 last year after about 30 years and enjoyed it just as much as I did as a kid.
I got a new Game Boy for my 8th birthday back in 1990. My dad also bought me Kid Icaurus & Mario Land. I was very happy! I still have these items till this day that I cherish very much. Great memories! Thank you! 👍🍻
Some guy going by "Family Jules" made an excellent video of a "metal" take on the music to this game some years ago. I just love when he gets to the World 2 theme and smiles real big. It's such a happy song. Love the music on this game.
Every one of these playthroughs I've watched, I've always admired a line that ought to become your signature: "Make one too many wrong moves (or if you die too many times), it'll be game....OVER!"
This was my first Mario game, i didn't play the OG trilogy from the NES till the All-Stars ports on the SNES. I got this game with my DMG Game Boy along with Tetris. As a Sega kid growing up, this was my first exposure to the titular Nintendo plumber and it was an unforgettable one. So much love for this game!
4:11 You can thank Alexy Patjitnov for that. He said, “if you package Super Mario Land with the Game Boy, it’ll only appeal to boys. But if you package Tetris with the Game Boy, it will appeal to everyone.” There is even going to be a game and watch multiscreen of Tetris; but it ended up getting canceled for fear of ruining the sales of the Game Boy version.
As a kid I certainly died enough. In more modern times I can usually make it through without dying. It’s fun to reminisce when I get to a part that used to give me fits while I fly through the level like it’s nothing
Still to this day my favourite old Mario game. I absolutely love Sarasaland and Tatanga is a great villain. The comics following this setting have always had a close place in my heart.
Another absolutely incredible guide, I just beat the Castlevania NES trilogy using the guides you made for them, your videos are truly amazing. It would be awesome to see an Earthbound Beginnings guide a.k.a. Mother.
I remember playing this one as a kid! Always remembered that the bosses all said “BAAAA!” when you’d hit them with your fire flower. Good times. Simpler times. Thanks for taking me back for a bit! 👍🏽
Some of the bosses in Link's Awakening use the same sound effects. Makes you wonder if Link is just Mario having a dream or something. Wait... We've had that already. Never mind. Hahahaha
Super Mario Land is incredibly easy to beat, and this is coming from someone who hasn't beaten a lot of video games. I couldn't beat this game when I was a kid, but I as got older and more experienced, now I can beat it every time. The developers of this game were generous with the amount of 1 Up hearts, bonus rooms with lots of coins, and bonus stages at the end of levels, all designed to give you extra lives. In my opinion, that's what makes the game so easy. Unless you're a beginner, or you just suck at video games, you won't get a game over, as long as you keep getting extra lives. Now if you're professional speedrunner, you'll be able to beat the game without needing extra lives, but I'm not at that level. lol That being said, I did find a couple of things in this video I didn't know about, so thanks for that. I always assumed there was a way to get to that bottom path in World 2-2, but I could never figure it out. I just assumed that if I tried jumping to it, I'd just fall into the water, and I never thought to check for invisible blocks. Pretty clever by whoever came up with that idea. I didn't know about the screen wrapping glitch on the boss stages. My copy must be the 1.1 version because I recall dying when being pushed off screen. This must've been a case where they hadn't come across that glitch when the game was being tested, and it wasn't until after the game had been released and players discovered it that the developers found out, so they released an updated version that fixed it, since it wasn't intended for players to be able to perform that trick.
This game means a lot to me. For the past 2 years my daughter has had to get casts regularly from Shriners. This is the game I playthrough every time she has her procedure. I’ll always cherish this game for helping me get through and continue to get through our medical journeys. Also I didn’t expect an ICP reference during a UCBVG video.
*sigh* God, the memories just looking at this game bring up. Honestly, I think that's half the reason I keep coming back. That, and I thoroughly enjoy the way everything is structured/presented by you> Great job as always my dude. Big Thumbs Up indeed. :)
At 46:30 those glitter enemies can be kill with your cannons, just get close an spam B since you can fire a lot faster with B, I don't think I ever count how many times you need to fire, but bewteen 5 and 10 I would say, they give 800 points so it's really good to get more points with your start since every bird will also give 800 points after that.
Hopefully, you'll still are going to do this type of content because I fall asleep to it. This is my first video that I'm watching of yours. My nostalgia is responsible for this.
6:06 bro your intros never ever ever get old 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 the inflection on the "and" is perfect. I find myself using your phrase in conversations all the time
Well done! Thanks for the new tricks! I've been playing this game since 1990 and I didn't know some of these techniques. You made me want to play it now 😊
I posted this personal story about Super Mario Land on the Patreon poll and figured, what the heck, I'll post it here as well. Many years ago, I had some cousins from out of state that would visit every summer. One of those summers (I forget the year) was my first experience with Super Mario Land as one of them had brought his Game Boy, and I so badly wanted it. That same year, my Dad's parents bought me a Game Boy for Christmas, and I remember them letting me play Tetris on it a few days before Christmas so long as I didn't tell my parents about it. Finally, on my birthday (January 31st), my Mom's parents came to visit that evening and gave me Super Mario Land. I remember bouncing all over the place (literally) hugging and thanking them over and over again.
Hi, @UCanBeatVideoGames. Love your videos! So many tricks and secrets revealed on these games that I had no clue about. Do you think you could do a guide for Super Mario Land 2? And maybe guides for some Donkey Kong games, starting with Donkey Kong Land for the Game Boy? That was the first DK game I ever played as a kid 😁
An extremely easy way to beat the final boss is to place Mario on the bottom of the screen on the 3rd block from the left and rapidly fire away. You will be close enough to damage the boss with your shots, and you'll also destroy any incoming shots as well.
First SMB game I beat and I was one proud 8 year old. It was the perfect challenge that age group, which was not something I had experienced, with video games, at that point in my life. The late 80s and early 90s was not a time when kids my age actually "beat" games often if at all. The music is also so good in this game. Hits the atmosphere spot on.
You don't need to pres down+right all the time for the trick. Once Mario is tucked in, you can hold down+right and just repeatedly tap jump. It's easier on the fingers and the d-pad :)
As the very first game I played on a portable console this game holds a special meaning for me. Even to this day I casually speedrun it now and then just for fun.
Havent played mario land 1 since i was a little kid. As soon as mario land 2 came out, i never went back to mario land 1. But all the sounds and music is still burned into my memory. Thanks for playing this oldie but goody.
I played this game with my son all the time- WE LOVE THIS!!! TY!!! He just graduated high school and is inspired to play games online like you! Thanks for the retro good goodness, and inspiring my son to play games professionally! 🎮
Hey brother just letting you know how great this channel is. I am stuck dealing with a hurricane in central Florida and your videos have been keeping me company all night while I was up keeping watch making sure my house didn't flood. Thank you for the work you do.
I loved this game growing up! I tried to beat the game with as many lives left as possible. I think my best was 44 or 45 lives left and no deaths. I would often beat the game and leave it on the end scene just for the music. Thanks for the video!
My parents bought me this game along with my NES. They thought this game was compatible with the system. I had it in a cupboard for years until one of my buddies let me borrow his Gameboy and I finally got to play it and beat it. Fun game 😊
Boy, does this bring back memories. One of the first Game Boy games I ever owned, sometime after I bought my Game Boy (I bought it new, in-box, but it didn't include a game, so the guy at the game store was nice and threw in GB George Foreman's KO Boxing). Good times!
Sometimes I randomly bust out singing the level one song of this game to this day. Doot dee doo dee doot doot! Its really catchy. And I always love the Egyptian song too. This game had great music for such an old gameboy game. Could do without the annoying bouncy fireball and exploding turtles though.
I've had the level 1-1 music randomly stuck in my head for years (or, decades at this point?) I could never remember what game it was from, now I know! Thanks for another trip down memory lane!
I swear those diamond enemies on the last stage can be beaten by shooting them... it just takes a lot of shots, if I'm remembering correctly. Not worth it, but it can be done.
Nice, love that the Mario series is finally getting an episode on this game! Looking back it's insane that after Christmas 89 I had this to play as well as SMB2. Thanks, dad, for showing love through money after the divorce and thank you mom for the lengths you had to go to get SMB2. No she didn't do any "favors" or anything lol, but I've since asked her as an adult how hard it was to get, she said she went to about a dozen stores. Er I mean "thanks Santa!"
Nice. I beat this game and love everything about from the music to the moments. Its also the first game where Princess Daisy makes her first apperance.
The screen with the 3 Pionpis is a fantastic way to rack up an obscene amount of points. Edit: The Shikako enemies (flying glittery box-like enemies in the Sky Pop level) take about 10-20 hits to beat. They're not invincible.
This game isn't really big, but they put a lot of stuff in it. I didn't know all of the bonus rooms. Your style of presenting your videos is very enjoyable. Thank you very much.
Love this game! The music is just as classic to me as any of the music in the NES games, and the shooting sections in the submarine and the plane are actually really fun!
I ended up getting about 15 minutes into this video and took a break to playthrough the entire game. Normally I just watch the videos, but nostalgia bit me and I just had to go and play.

Mario Land in particular. Only takes me about 25 minutes to run through the whole game but what a happy 25 minutes it is
I remember this. The first Mario game I actually beat through my own skill. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Me too! I'll never forget that night. My parents weren't home and I ran out to the car to show my dad as soon as he got there.
I got a new Game Boy for my 8th birthday back in 1990. My dad also bought me Kid Icaurus & Mario Land. I was very happy! I still have these items till this day that I cherish very much. Great memories! Thank you! 👍🍻
this channel is SEVERELY underrated…
Some of the best music in the Mario series here. I can't believe they never brought back any of the enemies from this game back.
Some guy going by "Family Jules" made an excellent video of a "metal" take on the music to this game some years ago. I just love when he gets to the World 2 theme and smiles real big. It's such a happy song. Love the music on this game.
That main theme is so iconic and it gives me so much nostalgia. Just an incredible tune
Tantanga is a Boss in SML2 ;)
These japanese creators are like an All Star Team of Awesomeness. I love that we honor them here.
Every one of these playthroughs I've watched, I've always admired a line that ought to become your signature:
"Make one too many wrong moves (or if you die too many times), it'll be game....OVER!"

Nope, me too

Even after 30+ years, the sound the cloud boss makes when taking damage still makes me laugh. Its just the goofiest sound effect to me.
"BAAAH BAAAH BAAAAAAAHHHHH"
The bosses all sound like sheep when you shoot them, lol
Maybe the "BAH BAH" music in the New Super Mario Bros series is the dying, distorted screams of Super Mario Land bosses.
As a kid, it scared the crap out of me, hearing it the first time. Later it got funny.
4:11 You can thank Alexy Patjitnov for that. He said, “if you package Super Mario Land with the Game Boy, it’ll only appeal to boys. But if you package Tetris with the Game Boy, it will appeal to everyone.”

I don't know if your intros get enough credit so let me just compliment your research and organization of information. This is a great channel!
And whoa, never knew this game had continues. It's so easy to accumulate 20+ lives that I never died enough to get to that point.
As a kid I certainly died enough. In more modern times I can usually make it through without dying. It’s fun to reminisce when I get to a part that used to give me fits while I fly through the level like it’s nothing
@@zalden2565lol, I know. I just could not keep my cool as a kid. Now I run through these games like it's my backyard.
Still to this day my favourite old Mario game. I absolutely love Sarasaland and Tatanga is a great villain. The comics following this setting have always had a close place in my heart.
If I remember correctly the "glitter enemies" can be destroyed with sky pop, but it takes like 10 hits.
I was scouring the comments to see if anyone else mentioned this. I almost gave up but then I saw your comment! You are correct!
Another absolutely incredible guide, I just beat the Castlevania NES trilogy using the guides you made for them, your videos are truly amazing. It would be awesome to see an Earthbound Beginnings guide a.k.a. Mother.

Man, that sneaky Animaniacs reference at 44:06 really got me
I love the idea of Mario piloting vehicles such as submarines and a plane, as well as a flipping rocket, way before he touched a kart.
I really enjoy and appreciate the history lessons we get before the playthroughs! Thanks for all your efforts!
That’s all I usually watch and I mean that in a good way. His focus is the gameplay but the concise history of these games is so well done.
I agree. It's great. Always cool to learn more about the games you love.
I remember staying up night after night after Christmas trying to beat this game.

I don't think I was ever aware of the harder 2nd game for Super Mario Land. Hopefully Switch Online will get this game soon.
Not played SML in years but i do remember how hard it was so i just played 6 golden coins instead with it's much easier completion.

Good stuff, very thorough! Love that you name all the enemies!
Mario was a Seal before he left the Navy and "became a plumber". He has a ton of training, but that's all classified, folks.
Woohoo, love this game - totally would love if you did more Game Boy games!
@46:26 Just want to mention that the glitter like enemies in 4-3 can indeed be killed without a star man. It just takes a fair amount of shots.
