  • It's been a while since I've used a backwards compatible PS3... so I decided I wanted to buy one. GameStop didn't have any available, so I decided to check out ebay. I found this one for ~$51, but it ended up being too good to be true...

I'll go ahead and say it; finding a PS3 fat in good condition is near impossible these days. I got a used 80 gig, backwards compatible back a year ago off of ebay and while it was working good for a couple months, it got YLOD. I do remember it would used to get pretty loud and overheat, and shut down sometimes. I tried repairing it twice; first time replacing the thermal paste, didn't work. Second time heating up the capacitors, still no luck. I got the slim instead and so far I'm satisfied with it. It runs flawlessly like new, and it's truly an awesome console. I just play my PS2 games on my PS2 instead.

The moment you realize the other sticker on the back says “PS3 160GB” The key thing is it having 2 USB slots on the front. Always 4 for backwards compatibility.
The 80GB model also had its own form of backwards compatibility. Software emulation mainly and it didn’t matter what firmware it was on (since there was a rumor that you would lose it if you updated the console)
I do hate eBay sometimes.. eBay also ruins prices for things. Especially old things. Prices get jacked ridiculously high for things that usually aren’t worth it. But I paid $100 for an unopened copy of Hitman Agent 47 for PC. Turned out it was opened, the sticker on the bottom showed that the paper ripped, which made the words not line up. So they gently put the sticker back on. I complained to the seller and they refunded me in full and I got to keep the game.
eBay can be super fun and you can find great deals. But the sellers reputation matters, if they screw someone, they can’t hide it. Never give them 5 stars if they don’t earn it and that includes packaging. Personally I think this person did a horrible job packing that console but I might just be a stickler for that.

Agree, and these BC age like fine wine: if they are kept in good condition and never had issues they keep getting more and more expensive. If you see one dust free and in good condition for $150 or more just grab it! There is a reason why a CHECHA01 weights over 5kg and an 80gig hdd only weights just above 3.6kg. Sony were just losing money with these BC ones hence the reason they started producing the 80gig fat and the slim models.

I requested to buy all top loaders.. and ended up buying most of them offered to me through the message boards. Since pictures couldn’t be attached back then to the message boards .. B01 20GB and A01 60GB launch models are the system on a chip backwards compatible ones meaning they shoved a PS2 by adding the Emotion Engine chip on the motherboard. The E01 don’t know the storage capacity is software emulated backwards compatible but it’s compatibility is slightly less than the A01 and B01 which basically are the launch models. The E01 also looks just like the A01 with the chrome finish.

There is way too much misinformation being spread about PS2 backwards compatible PS3's. It does not matter whether it is a 60gb, 80gb, 40gb, or 20gb. People change out harddrives way too often and the boxes are not always there. You distinguish it by the model numbers like he did at the end of the video. So there are 4 different backwards compatible models out there. 3 of them look identical up until the serial. The 4 models are the CECHAXX, CECHBXX, CECHCXX, and CECHEXX. The CECHAXX is the launch model that came out in every region. This is the 60gb model and it has the chrome accents, translucent plastic (yes the backwards compatible models have translucent plastic where the later fats with silver accents are pure black), card reader flap, 4 usb ports, and had the complete PS2 hardware inside so it has the CPU and GPU all in one chip. The CECHAXX is considered the definitive model. The CECHBXX is a really strange one and is the ugly duckling out of all backwards compatible PS3's nay all PS3's. This came out as a 20gb model and has a black accent strangely enough but no wifi. It lacks the flap with card readers and for some reason has full PS2 hardware in it just like the CECHAXX. Those were the only models with the full PS2 hardware in it, those PS3's will play PS2 games as good a PS2 as it is running off of original hardware. The 3 model that was released was the CECHEXX which has only the PS2 GPU. It looks identical to the CECHAXX, but it lacks full hardware. This PS3 will play PS2 games quite well, but it will lag or stutter in certain games and some games do not work. The CECHEXX is an 80gb model originally. Now the last on is the CECHCXX which was released only in PAL regions and it is pretty much a CECHE01. They are identical from the outside as they both have the card reader flap and have silver accenting, but the motherboard is a little different. They both have partial emulation of PS2 games as the CXX contains the PS2 GPU as well. The CECHCXX is a 60gb and it was only released in PAL regions. Those are EVERYTHING that is needed to distinguish backwards compatible PS3's. If I forgot anything please mention it. I would love to know more about these as they are quite interesting compared to the rest of the PS3's.

Should have done a little research. The serial for the backward compatible PS3 should end in A01 or B01. The A01 is the one with the card readers in the front next to the disc slot, which is also a way to tell what model it is because the A01 has 3 dots to open the card reader slots and the B01 I believe does not. But still, only the A01 and the B01 are backward compatible the A01 was a 60GB model and the B01 was actually 20GB and was released months later for a cheaper price. The 60GB was the launch version and cost more. The B01 was cheaper because it came with 40GB less storage and didn't include the card readers.
The P01 here is a very late model and all models are "technically" backward compatible because they can all play PS1 games. But only the A01 60GB and B01 20GB have the PS2 chip on board and the 40GB, 80GB, and 160GB models after that are not backward compatible with the PS2 .

I got the backwards compatible ps3 on ebay a month ago or so. With shipping paid 227 for it. It was an auction. Seller said he bought it when it was first released. He said he mainly used it for the video streaming apps since smart tvs were not invented yet. He rarely played games on it. When smart tvs came out he stored it away in his closet for the past decade. Ps3 works like it's new. No problems at all with any games. You got jipped man. Yes as the other comments say. Chrome finish where the disc slot is. 4 usb ports. And take a look on the side of the ps3. Opposite side of the hard drive slot. If you see the dvd rom icon then it is the backwards compatible ps3. And you gotta really look at the model number. Sucks you got screwed on this. And it is true. They are more difficult to find and much more expensive. If you really want an authentic backwards compatible ps3 expect to pay at least 200 bucks for it. It's worth every penny! Think about it. Its 3 systems in one! Also got a 1 TB hard drive on Amazon for 40 bucks to expand the memory since these days 60gb is nothing
