The only argument for an xbox 360 were certain exclusives if they were the ones you wanted and really badly programmed ports to ps3 that didn't utilize the cell processor at all. The 360 was inferior in literally every other way.
I got myself a PS3 Slim in around 2010-2011 and even though the controllers don't work as well anymore, the system is still functional and I never had problems with it. Great stuff!
Thank you. Brought back so many good memories. I still own and use this model PS3 and agree 15 years flew by too fast. Sweet reference to Comp USA. I think Circuit City was around as a retailer back then too.
I miss CompUSA, spending WAY too much time going up and down those aisles looking at Big Box PC games. Funny you mention the sticker. I just got a big box PC game that had a CompUSA sticker on it and I am leaving it on too.
CompUSA was a pretty magical place as a kid in those pre-internet days because I wasn’t completely familiar with every single product on the market at the time. Just exploring the store I was bound to discover 100 different things. It was all very new and exciting. I still remember going there to pickup our Windows 95 PC
Definitely a good find. I remember I had a PS2 backwards compatible PS3. About a year or two into it, the disc drive would eventually ware out not being able to read PS3 games. Then wouldn’t read PS2 games. Then the disc drive just stopped working and it eventually died out entirely. My favorite memory of my PS3 was when I was playing the Uncharted demo and after I played it I immediately went out to buy the game. First time I ever went to a Walmart at 1:00 in the morning to buy a game, lol.
Are they that expensive to buy now? I got a CECHP01 Fat for $40 from Gamestop back in 2017 and that system has been great ever since, especially after I took the 500GB drive out of my PS4 and installed it in the PS3 and then slapped Multiman on it.
@@souljastation5463 Wow can't believe how expensive PS3 fats have gotten just looking them up on Offerup a minute ago. Which is crazy because in the US the only Fats with even partial BC support are CECHA, CECHB, and CECHE. My fat is CECHP which was the last model of fat released in the US so has some die shrinks on both the CELL and RSX that keep it running nice and quiet for me, though they're not shrunk as much as the Slims. I think CECHP are 65 nm on both CELL and RSX while Slim and beyond are 45nm lithography. The fats on 90nm lithography though are the ones that use a ridiculous amount of power and seem to die off quick, and I could swear there were some models of PS3 fat that even had 65nm CELL but 90nm RSX. Surprised the Super Slims weren't made on 28nm lithography since that was widely available by the time PS3 Super Slim launched and you'd think it would have saved Sony money while making it the most reliable model. But as it stands Slim is probably the best PS3, especially CECH-21xx and before since you can put CFW on it.
@@homerthompson416 slim is indeed the best model. The fat one was just crazy for its time and so you couldn't expect it to be reliable. Then the slim adjusted everything that was wrong with the fat. The super slim was just a cheap model made to milk the last years of that gen. The fat especially 60gb is very expensive because it has the retrocompatibility but honestly I wouldn't care, ps2 games run better on a pc now...you can push some 4k, antialiasing and such on them. I believe slim models can run forever without changing the thermal paste, if you keep them in an open space and don't live in a very hot place of course.
@@freshtomato834 I'm not a fan of PCSX2 at all. Every version I have tried and every game I have tried on it has at least minor bugs like missing textures or audio slowdowns or various other graphical corruption if I run with any kind of hardware acceleration. I have never played a game on PCSX2 that wasn't littered with bugs while even on newer emulators that should be harder to run like RPCS3 and Cemu I have done full playthroughs of games that ran great. When it comes to PS2 I just stick with my PS2 Fat even though I gotta play at 480i.
Wow! I have exactly this model kept in perfect condition with the box and without a scratch. I played a lot but I was always careful not to scratch. didn't know it was such an important version
15 years later, I'm still impressed with how much Sony put into the PS3 launch model while also taking the ultimate gamble in including a fully playable Blu Ray drive for both games and movies. I was extremely fortunate to have found and bought the hulking $600 top-tier model as I fondly remember that when I went to GameStop, the guy behind the counter said that the one I was buying was the last one they had in stock and this was just as Sony announced that they were discontinuing this model. I recollect carrying this box out to my car after buying it and the weight was enough to drag my arm down and I was ecstatic about it! Granted, 15 years later, I still have this PS3, but it now resides in its original retail box in my basement while I got the "slim" model to replace it that's now hooked up to my PC monitor. But, now that I'm going through my older catalog of PS2 games, I think it's time for me to bring my original PS3 out of mothballs and get back to its outstanding PS2 backwards compatibility. Oh and if you're reading this Sony, when the hell are you going to espouse PS3 backwards compatibility to its fullest? So many good games on the PS3 that you're leaving behind...
Wow that's pretty cool in the box. I still have my backwards compatible ps3 till this day and surprisingly it still works like a charm. I only had to reballed the cpu once.
This takes me back in time when I was 13 and worked delivering internet bills for $30/Month just so I could buy the console. When I finally did, it was magical. This console is a masterpiece.
I finally got a PS3 when it came bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4. The fight between Snake and Liquid was the best part of the game. Aw yeah, good times.
Beautiful console and loved the built in PS2 backwards compatibility. The big problem with this particular model is it was somewhat susceptible to the yellow light of death. I speak from experience. I had to warranty 3 of these consoles and they all wound up with the same problem. Got my first 80GB model, the problem never returned.
I have the 60gb one with PS1-2-3 compatibility (it was still hardware-native to PS2). I ended up going with a custom HEN install to control the heat (I want this thing to last) + i re-applied the thermal paste. I really enjoy it thoroughly (even though I have a PS5). It is still very loud as others have mentioned though....
Aw man this brings me back. I still have this model but it has yellow lighted twice, it died right before gta V released. I still have it sitting in my closet, gonna display it proudly when I get my own place.

Yeah most of the old PS3 model's are toaster's. I had a 60GB and didn't want to let it go. I'd be to scared to buy one now day's. I see them here and there for decent price.
Yup they were almost on par w the red light of death x boxes
Sadly I got a 20 GB model last fall and only after a month I got the YLOD.
Luckily I have the SuperSlim model to use as my actual PS3, but I had to get a cheap upscaler for my PS2.
@@Darthlucy1 undiddled with factory seal ylod models are not throwaway! Still worth $20-$25. It was a problem with the power caps surrounding the processor. This is actually fixable. Now, if someone has already gone in there leaving a path of destruction messing up the cables and guessing, while not fixing the problem, I think maybe see whatever anyone will offer. $5-$10.
The PS3 is amazing, in 2020 I've been playing at least as much on PS3 as on PS4.
Same buddy.
I bought my first PS3 in 2020 and I love it
The only argument for an xbox 360 were certain exclusives if they were the ones you wanted and really badly programmed ports to ps3 that didn't utilize the cell processor at all. The 360 was inferior in literally every other way.
That's the first model of PS3 I bought back in the day, and I still own it today.

I literally just REBOXED my ps3 60gb model back into it's original packaging for storage. Still works perfectly.
I got myself a PS3 Slim in around 2010-2011 and even though the controllers don't work as well anymore, the system is still functional and I never had problems with it. Great stuff!
I have a super slim and it still works great. Love it.
Thank you. Brought back so many good memories. I still own and use this model PS3 and agree 15 years flew by too fast. Sweet reference to Comp USA. I think Circuit City was around as a retailer back then too.
I’d say $150 for that system in that type of condition was an excellent deal.
Right?! I’m jealous
I’d still pay extra for a fully BC model; software emulation is never the way to go guys.
@@johnjohnathan6014 that is very true. I’d still take the original 60gb version over anything. Still a great find though.

They nearly cost that much used on eBay for the 1st gen PS3s. It's a steal especially with an OG controller.

This is the model and bundle I had, it was completely mindblowing at the time
I sold my PS3 years ago, and thought this was a good idea at the time. I have been crying for it ever since.
Are they that expensive to buy now? I got a CECHP01 Fat for $40 from Gamestop back in 2017 and that system has been great ever since, especially after I took the 500GB drive out of my PS4 and installed it in the PS3 and then slapped Multiman on it.
@@homerthompson416 only the FAT ones, they're expensive and unreliable. The slims are cheap and reliable.

I had to warranty 3 of these consoles and they all wound up with the same problem. Got my first 80GB model, the problem never returned.
This is the 80gb model though.
I have the 60gb one with PS1-2-3 compatibility (it was still hardware-native to PS2).
